All 3 times I have gotten the pulled pork lunch special with 2 sides (corn pudding and Mac and cheese) and man has this meal floated my boat... Every. Single. Time! This meal was under $8 too! As a matter of fact, as I am typing I'm thinking about going for dinner... that is how OBSESSED I have been with City BBQ! As a work group we go to this location often. We always dine in. Yesterday, we didn't think we'd have time to eat there so we ordered online for pick up. On the way, we found out we would indeed have time to eat and not rush back to work. When we got there I told the woman fixing orders that we were gonna eat there instead. She chastised us as if we were trying to cheat and cut the line. There were several people waiting and she did not do it quietly. She loud talked us! I could not believe it. Now mind you, there was NO line to order just folks waiting to get their food. She told us "I'll let you do it this time but don't do it again". Tried to explain to her why we changed she was not interested. Besides the food wasn't ready anyway. Finally got our food and we sat outside. The brisket was so fatty that it was hard to eat. Returned it. The same woman let us know that if we didn't want fat, we need to order it lean. There is no option for that when you order online! And...the menu does not say that! But of course she made that our error too. I get the brisket all the time, have never had one that was more fat than meat. Good food. Even better service. Where do I start with this place? I love going here. It's near my home so I frequently meet friends here or stop in for take-out. I don't eat meat, but the sides are all so yummy! I also like that they have Sun King here, so I usually grab a Cream Ale with my food. I'll take my laptop there to work on projects and hang out for a couple hours. The staff always stops by to see if I need anything else or takes my empty bowls away. Christian, who I believe is one of the managers, is always incredibly friendly and remembers me, no matter how far it is between my visits. The patio is cool, too, during the warm season! City BBQ was a stellar caterer to work with from start to finish. They were friendly, responsive, and the food is incredible. As a LGBTQ+ couple living in Indiana, it was always a concern that the vendors we were using would allow their personal beliefs about queer impact their service. City BBQ was not like that at all. They remained professional through the whole process and we could tell from the tasting, to the time leading up to the wedding, to the actual service provided at the event that they were genuinely excited for me and my partner. 10/10 would recommend for any catering needs and 10/10 would recommend as a LGBTQ+ friendly vendor. read more

The staff is really nice and were patient with us while we made up our minds in what we wanted to order. The food was awesome! The jalapeño cheddar sausage was INCREDIBLE!!!! Yes, the ribs were also amazing, the brisket was amazing, but this cheddar sausage, by the pound, unsliced - was PERFECT. Probably one of the best foods I've ever eaten in my life and certainly the best jalapeño cheddar sausage. The store staff told me if I'm coming back to get more (because I said I would) I should do it Sunday, because they aren't getting more after that. It was busy and loud, not sure I understood - does he mean for the week? Seasonally? Ever? I think the names on the sauces don't really explain the flavor. I wish they were better labeld mild, medium, hot. Just because I love spicy BBQ. I really enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich. I also loved my Mac and Cheese I got for one of the sides. I wasn't a fan of the potato salad. One of the potatoes wasn't eaten cut, it was whole and they simply plastered with mayo. I prefer potato salad with mustard in it. There wasn't a lot of flavor in it. I would've tried the baked beans but I'm not a big fan with the brisket. All in all, I can give my rating a C. The workers seemed not to be impressed to work on a holiday. Only had food to go, but man, was it delicious. It's not the best BBQ I've had, but it's also a lot closer than going down to Texas for a meal. I had the sampler to be sure to get a taste of all their meats. It was a TON of food, I should not have eaten as much as I did, but it was very good food so I kept eating. The sampler has pulled pork, brisket, sausage, and smoked turkey. The smoked turkey is the only one that disappoints, it's a bit dry and really bland to be honest. The brisket's ok, I've had better, but it's good. The pulled pork is delicious. Juicy, melt in your mouth delicious. The highlight though, has to be, the sausage; it's superb, full of flavor and you can taste the spices and grilling, it's fantastic. For sides I had the corn pudding and baked beans. Wow, the sides were incredible, some of the best BBQ sides I've ever had. The corn pudding was great and filling in and of itself. The baked beans were heavenly, sooooo full of brisket as well. The ribs, which I was told were freshly made as they had run out earlier in the evening, we're not that hot, very dry, and not very meaty. The brisket was more impressive. It was a generous amount and very juicy. The potato salad was pretty good as where the green beans with bacon. Just based on the brisket and the sides I probably would have given four stars. But the price was more than the value and their bbq sauces were not very good. I had the "Pick 2", two sides and had a bottled soda to drink, and my bill was over $20. They have several different types of BBQ sauce to choose from but only the original was any good. The rest seemed to experimental for me. Hmmm...how is it that I have yet to review City BBQ????!!!!!! This is pure blasphemy .... Well, in short, I Adore Mi Amour !!!! City BBQ is some damn great BBQ. I have eaten at this one downtown, the one in Avon and I have had them a couple of times at Yelp events (where I first tried them). The downtown location is spacious and bright with glass windows that let you people watch (or better yet car watch) towards 10th Street. I've been to this location many times and have yet to have a poor or bad experience here so I will start with cons and work my way to pros: Cons: Late evening might find you wishing for some of the delicious and tangy lemonade as since this is apart of the IUPUI campus, I imagine they stay pretty busy and I have found it to be nearly or completely empty the later I come. But I don't fault them for it. They have great lemonade and lemonade seems to be in high demand around the IUPUI campus. Also, the normally warm bbq sauce has been cool to the tastebuds a few times as the evening rolls around. I assume this is because the closer they get to quitting time, the less they need to keep it warm. I wonder do they toss the sauce when the night is over???? Finally, the onions and pickles are also in high demand so again, late evenings might find you seeking these items and they not be present. NO WORRIES!!!!! There is someone there that can fix that. Just go to the counter and alert someone that you would like to have some of whatever is missing and they will see to it that you get it. That's a nice segway to the Pros!!!!! First off, the food is WONDERFUL! The peach cobbler is really good and there is quite a bit served to you. Expect to share or save some for later. The corn pudding and the mac & cheese are where I find my repetition at. It is so hard to make myself NOT order these items. They are great !! The corn pudding is some of the best out there that isn't out of someone's grandmother's dutch oven. The mac & cheese has a delightful taste and is quite the cheesy goodness. I've had a few other sides which didn't disappoint me, so I would venture to say they are trustworthy on the sides for whatever you order. Meat - 9TH WONDER OF THE WORLD !!! What is going on with this pulled pork and what is going on with this brisket??? Please tell me how to make this at home....actually, nevermind, I don't have that time to spare and neither do my tastebuds. Expect to see me again at City BBQ soon because even as I type this and remember just how awesome the meats are, my mouth is watering and wandering off to the epicenter of someone's plate right now!!!! Note: this experience is from the Fishers location. We ordered a pound of brisket and a pound of pulled pork last night and we're disappointed in both. The brisket was tender, but has an inch of fat on it that should have melted into the meat if it were truly cooked low and slow. There was no evidence of a bark one would expect on brisket. The pulled pork was also tender, maybe not quite as juicy as the brisket, but had not a whiff of smoke flavor to it. I grew up with King's and GT South's, where the smoke and aroma of slow roasting meat permeated your clothes after 3 minutes waiting for a table. That, to me, is barbecue.
