I was eating in there 03/21/26 and the bar tender took my card and claimed he didn't have it. He started pulling card out of the register and I saw mine. I grabbed it and he grabbed it back and stole my card. I had to dispute led my card with my bank not knowing what he charged on it. A very unique spot in the downtown scene. If you are looking for brain freeze, this is your spot. I follows my cousins lead and got a frozen beverage. The flavors were good. I went with a banana flavor. There was live music so that can't be best and it allowed you a warm environment while drinking something cold. This must be an amazing spot during the summer. read more

City Tavern was amongst one of our stops on the night out. Friendly people, like the door man who was cracking jokes with us as were the bartenders, but it was kinda dead and the music was eh. So it was better than say Sharkey's, but the scene just wasn't there. We had our one drink and again like Sharkey's has a divey feel, full of regulars who were fairly chatty. A newlywed couple came in with their party which kind of livened the place up but even then outside a little friendly exchanges it was kind of like a sip and watch sports spot on any given night of the week as opposed to a warm Friday night where all the other spots in the area are lively. So I'm giving the City Tavern an "A-OK". It totally served its purpose for us but that's about it. We wanted to watch the SEC Championship game at a place that had audio for the game on. We were heading to Sharky's but came across this place first and it worked out just fine. They have plenty of TVs and the audio to the game was on but not too loud. It doesn't really have a lot of atmosphere or ambiance. But that didn't really matter to us since we were interested in the game. Drinks are reasonably priced and there is a pretty good selection. The service wasn't great though. They only had one bartender and he appeared to have a foot in a brace or cast of some type so stuff was very slow going. You'd have to time your visits to the bar as to try and avoid others as waits were pretty long at some points. There was one server working the floor delivering food and we asked her if she could run our bill for us (just one tab for all of us) but she couldn't/wouldn't. So again, it was OK. We found what we wanted but there is definitely room for improvement. read more

Enjoyed a night here over the weekend with family! My cousin was the talent that night so we came here as a group to enjoy his music. There were 2 things that didn't ruin anything but still important to note. In the restroom, the locks to the stalls are all broken, so someone has to hold the stall closed, or you or you just have to hope someone doesn't open it. Not ideal and doesn't make you feel very safe using the bathroom in a bar full of intoxicated people. Luckily, there were other girls in there that held it closed for me, but still not ideal to ask strangers to do that lol. The other semi-bad thing happened - one of the bartenders was rude out of nowhere which just wasn't cool. A friend of mine's card wasn't working because if a machine is older, the newer cards don't work or it takes a few tries. So he apologized and said "sorry man it usually takes a couple of times and it will work" The bartender looked up and loudly said "so you know there is a problem with your card and you keep taking it places trying to get it to work?!" Lol I just thought that comment was unnecessary because it wasn't busy at the time and we were being patient/nice and trying to help the situation when he snapped at us. I did immediately try to help and say he could try my card instead and I will say that he was nice to me, but I still didn't appreciate him being rude to my friend. Other than that It was such a fun night and the staff as a whole was overall great. The alcohol slushees are SO GOOD. I got the Electric Lemonade and just one or 2 are more than enough and they will sneak up on you but I definitely think you get your money's worth. I don't go out to places late at night very often, but when I do it's important to feel safe. I felt pretty safe here and it is a more casual environment which I like. We were able to reserve 2 tables for our family and I'm not entirely sure if this is an option for everyone - it may just be because our relative was performing. This would be a good question to call and ask about because it was nice to have 2 tables to ourselves and would be a good idea for a birthday celebration out and not have to fight others for group seating. Love this place! We mostly come here for Karaoke with Dj Puddin on Sunday and Tuesdays. They're alcoholic slushees are delicious! I usually get a mix of electric lemonade and strawberry margarita! SO good! Their prices are reasonable. Staff is usually very friendly. The crowd is a huge mixture! This is definitely one of our go to spots when we have friends in town! I went to city tavern. And was a really good paying customer. I was asked by the bouncer to do something, however, I didn't hear him due to my disability. I asked him to walk outside so that I could here him. He instead shoved me outside without even trying to listen. He was wearing a hat, shorter than 6ft black guy. He showed no concern for those of us paying to be there. He kicked me out literally because I asked him to step outside because I couldn't here him. Please have this man removed from his job. I met some friends here on a Saturday night. Awesome location! It was very busy but not too loud. TVs everywhere and they have a nice bar. Drink prices are average for the area. Initially I ordered some cheese fries and they were good... plenty of cheese and bacon plus the Ranch tasted home made. Later on I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with fries and it was fantastic!! There was chicken hanging out everywhere and it was fried perfectly and the sauce tasted great. Surprisingly good! We came in Saturday night for a pre-birthday party celebration for a friend and had an Electric Lemonade alcoholic Slushee. The flavor seemed to be lemonade with hints of blue raspberry. The cup was a decent size, but considering the strength (not very strong), the $9 price tag was disappointing. Otherwise, City Tavern seems like a great place to hang and socialize with friends as well as to enjoy good music provided by the in house DJ and to keep an eye on the sports games on the TV's. It's a divey pub in a great location on Main St. downtown. Doug is a friendly barkeep who is well informed about beers on tap. Lots of 'regulars' at the bar including some bartenders for other bars tanking up before their shifts - complaining about doofus coworkers. Trendy music, good prices, lots of chuckles. In our search for a true "dive" in Greenville we were told to check out City Tavern....it was supposed to be a great little bar with surprisingly good and effective frozen drinks... Upon entering I was struck by all the ripped chairs...c'mon people, if you can't afford new chairs at least duct tape them...no one wants to sit in that...and the empty beer bottles scattered on unoccupied tables...I am a bit confused if dirty was mistaken for dive... Not wanting to sit at a sticky table with ripped chairs we decided to stand at the bar...sadly we did not get to try a drink as the bartender was too busy talking to the other patrons at the bar to help us and no other staff could be located...after five minutes of holding out our money "bar style" and some uncomfortable staring we moved on... City Tavern, or Tassey's as it is properly called, is a Greenville landmark for me. You are guaranteed to run into old friends and likely to find a few new ones as well here. I'm happy to spend the whole night listening (or sometimes dancing) to their live music and stationed up at a table or booth at this gem of a dive bar. There are a few important rules to remember here: Rule 1. Take caution when you order a Tiger. One tiger=a good night Two tigers= automatic hangover Three tigers=certain death Rule 2. Always order cheese fries with extra ranch dressing. The ranch dressing that comes with the infamous cheese fries is the most addictive substance known to man. Put a bowl of cheese fries on the table and it will be annihilated in under 5 minutes. Rule 3. Remember City Tavern is an actual restaurant too. Sure its a little dirty around the edges, but the food is actually good and its a fun place to sit on the patio on Main Street and watch a game. I love City Tavern. I can't help it. read more

What a dump....and I don't mean that in a good way. I mean, I'm all for a good dive bar, but this place is a dump. They have a great downtown location, but have done nothing to improve the place...ever. All the bar chairs are torn up with the padding coming out. I was wearing a skirt, and didn't dare sit for fear of slicing my leg on the shards of torn pleather. All the tables are sticky. They are apparently "famous" for their slurpee-like frozen beverages, but that's not enough to hang your hat on. Their only redeeming feature is that they are one of the few places in town that has "Naked Photo Hunt". You know those bar top game units that have all the quiz games to play while you're drinking? This is the adult version...if you catch my drift.
