Met a few friends for lunch here today. (We initially planned to meet at the Bay Breeze restaurant across the street, but despite its posted hours of operation on its website, it was didn't open until 12 noon. Luckily, CJ's was open at 11:30am). The place was empty when we arrived but was starting to fill up some when we were dining. I gotta say, I loved the they have a humongous parking lot. Even better was the view. Nothing beats a water view. Even despite the pouring rain, it was beautiful. My friends live nearby and eat here a lot, and they say the outdoor patio in the summer is awesome. I can believe it. But even from inside, it was lovely, being right by the water. The interior is very large and has a casual lodge-y vibe. There are cute round tables for two with plush upholstered chairs lining the wall with all the windows facing the bay, and warm wooden booths with benches on the interior. Our server was Todd and he was fantastic! The menu had SO many choices, and all looked good (and my friends attested that everything WAS good), so I told Todd to surprise me with either the Caesar salad with shrimp skewers or the clam chowder. He brought me the chowder. And boy, it was good! I haven't had clam chowder in many years. This isn't the gourmet foodie fusion type of soup you'd get in fancier restaurants, no sir. This is the old-fashioned hearty comfort food you know from your youth. Thick and chock full of clams and potatoes. Very hearty. I ate half and was full. It came with warm crostini bread slices and I couldn't have any of them. This was the real deal. My friends had the "famous" fish and chips. This is the most popular item on their menu and they've had it many times before. The portions are GINORMOUS. My friends admitted, they should have ordered one meal and shared it. They say it's consistently delicious and perfectly cooked, and even the accompanying French fries are crispy and the cole slaw, delicious. Both had to get boxes to take half of their meals home. If I weren't driving a lot today, I definitely would have had one of their cocktails. Their drink selection looked fantastic. We all commented how we'd love to have one of their hot toddy-like cocktails today on such a rainy, dreary day. But alas, that will have to wait until another visit, when we all three weren't driving so much. The prices are on the higher side for such a casual place, but again, the food is great, the service is terrific, the view is lovely, and the meal portions are huge. IMO it's worth it. read more

Yum, yum and yum!!! This review is solely based on a to-go order. Called in our order using the icon on the Yelp app. The lady on the phone was really friendly and helpful and said it would be about 15 minutes for pick-up, and our order was ready on time! We ordered the manila steamer clams and half pound of peel-and-eat shrimp. Both were absolutely delicious! They also gave us cocktail sauce for the shrimp, garlic wine broth for the clams, and warm baked sourdough rolls with butter. They included plastic silverware and plenty of napkins. My wife and stopped in for a quick lunch after spending some time with the grandkids at Birch Bay State Park. We have never been to this area and aren't really familiar with any of the restaurants in this part of the state. Needless to say if was time for researching top spots on Yelp. We found several good options but were kind of craving a little seafood so we settled on CJ's Beach House. We arrived wearing our mandatory masks and were quickly seated. We opted for the outside deck because it was a beautiful day. Our waitress was super friendly and very accommodating with our grandchildren. We couldn't decide what to order so we ordered extra. My wife ordered a cup of Clam Chowder that was amazing. She coupled it with Fish and Chips and the Spicy Spanish Garlic Prawns. I ordered the Seafood Alfredo Linguine with a Ceasar Side Salad. The food was out to us very quickly and the service was excellent. The food was simply delicious. The fried cod was cooked perfectly and the prawns were super tasty. The Linguine was on point. We had plenty of leftovers but were glad we were able to sample a few of their dishes. Definitely a place we will be returning to!! read more

I was lucky enough to enjoy my dinner outside on a warm sunny evening. I thought the food was good and the Moscow mule was delicious. I got the muddy mud pie for dessert. It was good but very sweet. First time visit, A little leery as there were only 2 cars in the parking lot on a Sunday evening. An odor of some sort hung in the air upon entry and was noticeable to us both, not a great first impression. We went on a dinner date with another couple who had liked the place. Took a while to get table service even though we seated ourselves in the bar and were ready to order drinks at least. Finally able to get orders taken and then waited a bit still. The food was for the most part ok, my hamburger was tasty although the fries were underwhelming, the grilled mahi-mahi tacos were enjoyed by my wife. First person in line when CJ's Beach House opened, and I placed my to-go order (Thank You, Heidra). I ordered the (Cod) Fish & Chips entree ($18.95) and a third piece of fish ($7.50). The entree came with Fries and Coleslaw, both of which were good, so far my favorite in Birch Bay. The fish was very good, large portions, well cooked, crunchy coating with a great, tangy Tarter Sauce. Heidra was kind enough to pack extra napkins and forks, when she found out I was sharing. Very thoughtful. The restaurant is large, clean and orderly, seating inside and out, with a beach theme. The is a full cocktail bar, and looks like a good selection of beers and wines. Very casual but nice place for lunch. Located in birch Bay Area. The calamari was very nice. Asked for some extra dipping things and clearly stated "extra are $1,50 each". Ok, apparently this is a problem they have encountered. I find places that do this usually have a reason and purpose. The train and purpose is likely the casual environment We Also had the lobster and shrimp Mac and cheese. It was ok. The shrimp were as claimed "shrimps". Baby shrimps, Not much bigger than the tines of the fork. The lobster was present. Should have known better, that one's on me. Cheese was good and it came out hot. The burger was very tasty along with fries. The fish tacos probably the best on the menu. Service very efficient with a single server covering outside deck and hustling. She was great and thus the 4 stars instead of 3. Outside had nice ambiance and view of the water. Interesting to see the people walking about in the area. Plenty of parking in the lot at lunch. Sorry CJ's. Don't see what all the hype is about. My family and I were in the area visiting and were told the Fish and Chips were a "must have". We were a party of 9 but the place was completely empty on the inside....all the outside tables were occupied. We waited a full 10 minutes to be seated....there were no tables that needed to be pushed together, or anything really on the table that suggested any set up time was required. We waited an additional 10 minutes after being seated while we got settled and reviewed the menu. When our server finally came to get our drink order we let her know that we had all decided and knew what entrees we wanted. She very clearly let us know that she was not there to take food orders and only wanted to hear what we wanted to drink. Another 10 minutes later she arrived with our water and proceeded to take our order. Idk. Maybe she was busy or was working into her break time or something. On to the food.... Super overpriced for what you get. I had the "must have" Fish and Chips and a side Cesar Salad. I was very disappointed. My salad came at the same time as my entree....and it was tiny as heck as you can see from the pic. My son ordered a Full Cesar Salad and his was exactly the same size as mine....$12.95 for a few scraps or lettuce and some cheese...AND it wasn't that good. The fish was very oily, almost like the fry temperature was too low and I barely got any fries. Pretty much going around the table everyone had the same comments. We expected this huge feast for the price we were paying and got robbed. During the meal our server failed to refill a single glass of water. I'm glad I didn't order any alcohol and pay even more for a meal I could've gotten at Long John Silvers. Our bill ended up being over $150 bucks with 5 adults and 4 children eating off the kids menu and WATER..only one glass. Thank you CJ's. I tried, but I will not be returning. A few years ago, I completed, but did not post a review of this establishment. Following drinks only with poor service, I had given the place two stars and written the entire restaurant off. Last evening, my boyfriend and I came in for dinner and it changed my opinion. On a Tuesday night, the restaurant had few people, mostly appeared to be a 50+ crowd. We were seated quickly and received very good service from our waitress. I ordered a Bloody Mary. It was delicious, not overwhelming as some I've had previously. Few vegetarian options led me to order a vegetarian burger and fries. The burger was as expected and nothing exceptional, but the fries were perfectly crispy and delicious. Quiet dining atmosphere; not ideal if you're looking for socialization on a weekday. Good, but not unlike any other food I've had. Reasonable price. Great service. Am I blown away? No. However, based on my second experience, I won't avoid this restaurant as intended following my first visit. read more

Six of us chose CJ's for lunch because of the great view. With a restaurant right across from the bay (Birch Bay) and great views, we thought this would be a great place for lunch. Our waiter, Chris, was pleasant enough but after everyone had ordered their drinks, I asked for a (one) wedge of lemon for my water. Chris lectured me that lemons are very expensive and that he could only give me one wedge and then never brought it. The small and large Caesar Salads were the same size, and the salmon was over cooked and dried out as well as the chicken. We won't be back. We three women (in our 60's and 70's) were excited to come to CJ's Beach House for Fish & Chips but were ready to walk out when the MANAGER of the restaurant stared at us and audibly uttered "Wow!" when we inquired WHEN someone was going to acknowledge that we were waiting to be seated. There were no fewer than three people behind the counter (behind the front desk where the sign said "Wait to be seated.") A simple "We'll be with you in a moment" would have been greatly appreciated. Instead we were blatantly IGNORED. When questioned as to this serious breach in basic customer service the young woman we later found out WAS THE MANAGER continued to argue with us about our attitude at being ignored. Eventually, Rose walked us to our booth and a very nice, cordial gentleman came to take our order. Our meals arrived in a reasonable amount of time and we were very happy with his follow up service. Whoever owns the restaurant should know that their "manager" could use a refresher course on how to greet patrons--that a simple "Someone will be with you in a moment" when people are waiting would go a long way toward creating GOOD WILL (which cannot be bought.) The food was good. We had to ask for more lemon as all that came with the meal was one half of a small slice. Extra lemon and tartar sauce was soon brought out. The coleslaw was dry, lacking the creamy base that was expected. The fish was lightly breaded and the fries were better than the usual fare. There are few choices in Birch bay for dine in or take out with the Pandemic and sparse business. Here for the last few days of crabbing and gave this place a go as we are right next door staying at WorldMark Fish tacos, was actually tasty but the fish cut was so big and out of place with the small tortilla, a fail in preparation, also the price and surcharge for the salad was ridiculous expensive. The fish and chips: breading was good, but the fish was tasteless, lucky we didn't get fries with our fish tacos as the fries were terrible. Lucky they are the only game town as in a place with competitors they'd be gone, but as the only game in town the best choice, but terrible value. A caveat this was take out, so who knows maybe sit down makes a difference, LOL read more

A nice place with indoor and wonderful patio seating. The menu was loaded with beach-goer kind of food. Our group had a little of everything - fish tacos, shrimp tacos, salmon and a burger. Food is ok. Went on a Tuesday for a late lunch. Waited at the front and was looked at several times by waitress, but no other acknowledgement. The 5 of us ended up sitting in the bar. No one came to give us menus or water. One of our group had to go find menus. We waited for 15 minutes and no one acknowledged us still. A couple came in and sat in the bar. A waitress came out and brought them menus and waters. Glanced over at our table and went back to the kitchen? She came back a few minutes later with the couples drink orders and took their meal orders. Glanced in our direction again and disappeared. There was only our table of 5 and the couple in the bar. The waitress never came back. We left and drove to another restaurant nearby that seated us right away, brought us water and took our drink orders. It wasn't that difficult. We had an interesting experience here. Most notably, don't ask for any modifiers whatsoever (like, nothing. The answer is a hard no even if it's just for something on the side). Also, our 10 year old daughter was walking back to our table from using the restroom and an older male server commented loud enough for her to hear about "some kid following him around." She was embarrassed about it and said she was just walking back to the table. If he thought she was lost why not offer to help?Otherwise it just seemed mean. Chowder was very good. Ate out on the deck in a light breeze, not close to anyone else. Service was fast, accurate and responsive. Servers wore masks. Only 3 other tables occupied outside. We had crab cakes, fish and chips and fish tacos and my wife and I split each. All were excellent and comparable in price to restaurants in Federal Way, south of Seattle. The fries were coated and very tasty and the crab cakes had a lot of crab. Whole bill for 2 including 2 draft beers, tip and tax was $78 and well worth it. read more

Soooo Impressed tonight! I had the sunset dinner special - for only $25 I had a huge Caesar salad, beautiful green bean vegetables, mashed potatoes, and a large piece of salmon that was cooked perfectly. The pesto sauce was AMAZING! Also included was a dessert and I chose the chocolate mousse, which was so creamy and packed with flavorful mint layers and fresh chopped mint. I left my phone at home so I couldn't take pictures to show off the beautiful presentation of everything that came to the table. They have an impressive chef there. I learned that weeknights are a good time to come right now to experience his hand on everything. Driving through Birch Bay on a Saturday afternoon during a break in the rain and decided to stop here for a bite. One of the signs outside read "Best Breakfast in town"... the menu was posted at the door and it looked interesting but pricey.. we decided to go inside. The place looks much larger from the outside than on the inside. There is a super comfy bar area.. looked like couches back there.. all the seating for the restaurant tables was either right in the window or just across..so all tables have a nice view. We were seated right away at a window table. It was after noon and we were given a lunch menu.. guess we will have to come again earlier to try the breakfast. Decor was a bit dated but for us, it added to the charm. McKenna was our waitress and came by promptly and introduced herself properly. She had a very sweet wait-style for example we ordered ice teas and she asked if we would like sweeteners. Most of the time ice tea is served, the servers don't think About this.. maybe there is sugar on the table, but more often than not, sweetener is not on the table. Very thoughtful. From where we sat, we saw another sign outside that said "best fish and chips, Burgers ". My husband ordered the fish and chips which is Not something he would typically order but he ate all of it, Every drop.. the fries too! He was very satisfied!!! I had the crispy chicken salad and again, very good! Did I mention the restaurant is right on the bay? It's right on the bay!! Beautiful view but this area has absolutely spectacular sunsets.. so we definitely would like to come back to watch the sunset from these same tables and have a nice meal.. yeah that and come back For that "best breakfast..". McKenna was not the only server we encountered. I didn't catch the other names but everyone there was very polite, friendly and attentive to customers. They also seemed to work well/interact and assist each other which is always nice to see. Teis place is FILTHY DIRTY, my grandson wouldn't even use the bathroom, it was SO DISGUSTING, ( and he is in the Navy, on an aircraft carrier). When the highchair came with dried food, and overall grimy black grease all over it, I noticed the menue was just as DIRTY. Our thoughts were, what must the kitchen look like and how careful are they if this is how they show off the front of the house. We immediately left, with some callus staff memberreporting to other diners we were just too pickey!!!!! NO, we just don't care to eat off of plates, tables, and silverware that have other people's leftovers and greasy handprints. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A PUBLIC SAFETY THREAT! If I'd stayed in there much longer, I wouldn't gotten heat stroke. Summary: I can see this as being a favorite for the locals for lunch or a very, VERY casual dinner (you could show up in your pajamas and be fine), but if you're vacationing in the area (we were on a romantic, anniversary getaway) and you end up at CJ's expecting a nice seafood restaurant (which the name implies) this ain't it.
