I have been to a lot of cheesesteak places in Philly, and I know the new place isn't always seen as the best place, I mean what do they know, being new and all. However, this place rocks! Seriously one of the best cheesesteaks I have ever had. My gf is from Philly and had never been here and said the same. They do not skimp on the meats or anything else you that you may want on your cheesesteak. Even better they serve alcohol.. what is better than a cheesesteak? I finally got my hands on a real, authentic, delicious Philly Cheesesteak! Per my cousins recommendation I got cheese whiz on my cheesesteak instead of provolone (and I looveee provolone). The cheesesteak was hearty, cheesy, hot, huge, and great! I think I'll have to come back again and try the provolone though just to see the difference! And I mean hey if I don't like it, I'll just get another one with cheese whiz :) win win! read more

You can't go to Philadelphia and not have a Philly cheesesteak. My husband and I stayed at a hotel downtown and were going out on a walk so we searched the area we were in for a restaurant that was close and had good reviews on their cheesesteaks. Cleavers was the winner. When we walked in we were told to go to the left. The front is for take out orders. There was a sign that said we had to show our vaccination card and ID in order to dine in. We gladly pulled them out. It was nice to know that everyone in the room was not only protecting themselves but us as well. We were seated right after showing what was requested. The bartender was also the server in the area. She was pleasant and proficient at her job. Our cheesesteaks were served in soft bread that was grilled. The meat was well seasoned and when I took a bite, juice was oozing out. The veggies were cooked to my request. The sandwiches were YUMMY. The green beans were crispy. Definitely worth visiting if in the Philadelphia area. read more

Came to Philadelphia from NYC sand wanted to try a great Philly Cheesesteak and this place hit the mark! They have tons of different styles of cheesesteaks which is great! The decor is also awesome too. I went with the Effin hot cheesesteak for an extra kick, and it was actually spicy(not just a bit but a ton of great spice). Also the waffle fries are so so good and I would highly recommend dipping them in the Siracha aioli on the cheesesteak. Would definitely recommend this place! Only thing I would say can be improved is grilling the bread a bit more so it doesn't get soggy because of the fresh juicy steak. read more

I really liked cleavers for their cheesesteaks. The style of beef and cut was much different and in my opinion much better than another cheesesteak place I had. I'm sure the meat quality is a lot better too. They also serve very cheap beer bottled! I don't mind it's cheap beer, a lot of the beers are crated beers or imported but will only cost 3 or 4 a bottle! read more

Their food might be good, but their service is horrible. I placed a to go order, went to pick up, it up. 40 minutes later and they told me they never received the order. I had a confirmation on my phone. They were rude and could've cared less to resolve the problem. I will never go back. There are plenty of other good cheese, steak, and hoagie places in the area. read more

Pretty good cheesesteak. I got mine with peppers and onions. It's been a while since I actually ordered a cheesesteak (more of a roast pork guy myself) and was pleasantly surprised at the quality. The waffle fries weren't entirely my favorite. I'd give it a go again whenever I'm in the mood for a cheesesteak. There is counter service downstairs and a bar, as well as seating upstairs. The bar is fairly basic, but they did have a couple of interesting things on tap. The bartender was very friendly. read more

4 stars for the cheesesteak.... 2 stars for the cheesecake. i really do love the cheesesteaks but wow. we ordered a cheesecake tonight and for $7.55....... the size of it really blew my mind. you can see in the picture how sad of a slice it is. it should've been priced at $2.50. I totally recommend their steaks and i know complaining about cheesecake at a cheesesteak place is ridiculous but come on, for $7.55??!! look at the size of the container compared to the actual slice. read more

I did my online research to find the best cheesesteak in Philly. This place wasn't in the top 10, but it had higher stars on Yelp than one that was. I took the bait. Not impressed. I ordered The Block. The provolone ruined the sandwich. No beef flavor. No real flavor at all, except the crappy provolone. I also ordered the garlic & Parmesan fries. They were better than the sandwich but definitely nothing to make you walk through the door. Won't be back and I'd say try to to find something better if you're in the mood for a cheesesteak. read more

I felt so hungry after the jog up those rocky steps at the art museum. I found this on yelp, very helpful. The 1 pound cleaver was enough to feed a family of 3-4. Don't fall for the other tourist trap cheesesteak establishments, which are terrible and very sad. This is the real deal right here. When in Philly, go for the best. This is it. So good!!! My husband and I were staying at the Sonesta which was just up a block from Cleavers. There's a huge variety of cheesesteak options here and you can pick and choose what you want. I ordered a classic and it was HUGE. I added raw onions on top and it was perfect. I know this is probably a little more expensive than other cheesesteaks in the area but if you're in Center City area looking for a good option, this is it. Bonus points for the bar next door and upstairs seating area for when it gets busy. read more

First time in Philly and my first time having legit philly cheesesteaks. WAIT: Came inside, and there was a bit of a line but it went by pretty quickly. Gave me enough time to look over the menu. ATMOSPHERE: Fast casual, order first, get a number and then go upstairs to sit down. The upstairs is pretty spacious with a large high top table and then smaller tables that can be pushed together. It's bright, clean and casual. Not a hole in the wall and feels a little like a chain but it was still legit. FOOD: I got the block, my husband got the cheesesteak and we got waffle fries to share. Portions are pretty generous, if you aren't that hungry or can't eat that much (or you are getting side dishes) I would recommend sharing with 1 other person. THE BLOCK - when they say sharp provolone, they mean sharp..it almost had an overpowering pungent taste that you won't like if you prefer mild cheeses. The onions and peppers help make the sandwich more flavorful but my husband said it was too much going on at once. We got the seeded bun (better if you don't have a preference). I do wish I got it toasted to have the bun be a little more crunchy. It was soft with a SLIGHT toast on the underside but definitely a soft roll. The rib eye beef was thinly sliced, juicy, fatty and tasty. I'm not a HUGE fan of cheesesteaks and I can honestly say it was a really good sandwich. It was hot (temperature wise) and fresh. CHEESESTEAK - literally just rib eye beef and cheese. It was a white cheese (she said it was american) and it was much more mild than mine. The cheese was melted and oozing from all sides. This was very simple, but very tasty. Overall, definitely not a let down and lived up to its hype. I would recommend coming here if you want to try philly cheesesteaks. read more

TL;DR for the Cheesesteak crowd: whiz is put on the bread and not the meat leading to a bit of a soggy roll, perception of skimping on the cheese. Roll has sesame seeds on it. These sins aside, probably the best quality and flavor of any cheesesteak in the area. If you are limited in time and choices for a foray into the cheesesteak culture, this should be your first stop. Okay so you've made it this far. If you're looking for a review of the other menu items move along. They all looked amazing and reasonably priced, but we were on a mission. Location and ordering: Restaurant is clean and seating upstairs is comfortable. Staff was polite. Pretty versatile menu including shakes for dessert and a way above average beer and spirits collection. Food is brought up to you which is a nice touch I haven't seen in any of the typical cheesesteak joints. Food and drinks: Straightforward order of a Cheesesteak with whiz and onions. They offer a 1 lb option for the ravenous, but truth be told the portion of meat on the standard sandwich was generous. Meat is chopped into fine bits and has a great flavor. The roll was crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. They serve the whiz directly on the bun so it gets a bit soggy after a few bites and you can't help but feel robbed of some cheese. Onions are chopped medium and fully cooked but lacked the caramelization that some look for in the idea onion. They have a mini Coca Cola freestyle machine. It lacks a bunch of the fringe flavors though (no mellow yellow options to be found). If you're looking for a beer to pair with your meal, this place should be at the top of your list. The menu was impressive with many local and craft options. This place might lack some of the nostalgia that the original cheesesteak joints have, but it more than makes up for it with quality ingredients, atmosphere, and versatility of menu. If you are limited in time and choices for the foray into the cheesesteak culture, this should be your first stop. read more

Best cheesesteak found in Philly so far. Tried the chicken bacon ranch, which was a unique take on a Philly. It was huge with tons of grilled chicken and bacon. And if you're asked if you want cheese sauce for your fries, just say yes. and delicShelby the bartender was so fun and nice, and we ended up staying for hours. When I came to Philadelphia for an interview before moving here, I knew I needed to try an authentic cheesesteak while here... one minor problem is that I am a vegetarian and dairy-free. Well, that's not a problem at Cleavers! They offer a portobello "cheesesteak" and it is delicious! I really appreciate that their vegetarian/vegan option is actual vegetables and not fake meat. Also, I love that the sandwiches are customizable. I have brought both my mom and my cousin here when they came to visit me. They are both meat eaters and they thoroughly enjoyed their meals! My mom got the chicken and my cousin got the steak and they said both were very good. I would also recommend their fries, which are waffle fries and have always been very crispy! One order is usually enough to share between a couple of people, especially with the size of the sandwiches! I promise you will not leave Cleavers with an empty stomach! read more

Classic Philly cheesesteak with non-greasy ambiance and seating in front of large flatscreen TVs? Sign me up. The steaks here will certainly leave you full and satisfied. I prefer the steaks here over those iconic Philadelphia classic places that serve your steaks with a side of greasy shirts and attitude. No wit or wit'out here.. just a good steak, clean new upstairs seating where you can have proper conversations or catch a game. Also had the waffle fries here, but nothing too special about these (chick fil a has better waffle fries). Would come here again for sure, and to bring out of town friends. Didn't get to try the shake.. not enough space after cheesesteak. read more

Came here for dinner after work. My order consisted of cheesecake, with grilled onions, and cheese wiz. This sandwich was big and I could not finish it all, plus I order waffle fries. The cheesesteak is highly recommended and depending on your appetite could be shared. I only ate half. The fries were typical big waffle fries. Ambiance is very casual. Finally made it into the little sandwich shop that's making a big splash in the city of cheesesteaks, and all I have to say is if you're considering going- stop considering and go. I was lucky enough to try a bunch of things off the menu, as I came in for a group tasting event. The block is their most popular sandwich, and for good reason, it's tasty. The buffalo, chicken balsamico, and effin hot are all also winners. The mozzarella moons are crazy good if you like mozzarella sticks, the fries were crispy, and the fried pickles were tasty and well seasoned. Also had a milkshake, and would highly recommend. The cheesesteak sandwiches are amazing and this traditional sandwich with a little update is one of the best we've tried in Philly... we tried the MYO ribeye with Provolone, the BLOCK with provolone, and the CLEAVER with wizz. We also got the waffle fries; one with wizz and the other with white cheddar. I highly recommend the white cheddar. Wizz is strong and after about three fries it's just overpowering. I love the provolone and it's mixed throughout the sandwich and has a great balance of flavors. What ever you choose the buns are great and can be reheated in the oven in tinfoil. This makes them crisp and the leftovers just as good! Enjoy!! read more

What's the difference between their Cheesesteak sandwich and their Cleaver (besides 7 bucks)? Is it just the size?

The chicken did not have much flavor but adding the peppers they give you it adds some and my mom enjoyed it. The cheesesteak was good too but also the steak was a bit flavorless. The sandwich is big and you need to ask to be cut in half, they just give it to you whole. It gets busy and they only accept cash. They do have an ATM machine on site if needed. Parking is on the street and not bathroom that I saw. This would be a place I come back but I'll bring some salt and pepper with me.

Rather than waiting around, I was able to place my order easily through the kiosk and settled in to wait. What really stood out was the customer service. The manager noticed the delay, kindly apologized, and even offered me a drink and chips while I waited. That level of hospitality goes a long way and left a great impression. I ordered the Philly Special along with the Hot Honey chips, and both were delicious. The sandwich hit the spot, and the chips were a perfect addition. Yum! Sometimes it's not just the food that makes a place memorable, it's how you're treated. The team handled a busy moment with professionalism and kindness, and because of that, I left happy and impressed. I'll gladly be back the next time I'm in Philadelphia. Another visit definitely awaits!

They provide an order number, and when you arrive, your food is usually ready for pickup. Since the inside can get crowded with customers waiting for orders, calling ahead makes the process much easier. The cheesesteaks are really good, and I've also enjoyed their pizza. The service is good, and the staff seem to work well together to keep things moving and make sure customers get what they need. Overall, I enjoy coming here. It's not very close to where I live, but I still stop by and order when I'm in the area.

Compared to what we had earlier that day, which was Uncle Gus' at Reading Terminal Market, this sandwich paled in comparison. There's no need to ever come back here. There are WAY better cheese steaks all over Philly.

The first thing I noticed about this restaurant was how packed it was, but despite the crowd, the line moved quickly. They had their system down to a science when it came to taking orders. There's outdoor seating available, as well as a small seating area upstairs. While there aren't many tables upstairs, it's enough for a few groups, and the atmosphere was surprisingly quiet and cozy, even with the limited space. The staff was friendly and helpful, offering recommendations when I asked. I ordered the classic cheesesteak, loaded fries, and a drink, but I noticed they also had waffle fries on the menu. They let me try them, and honestly, I wish I had ordered them too--they were perfectly cooked and seasoned just right. I opted to dine in since most people were ordering their food to go, and I figured I'd have no trouble finding a spot. I was right. The food itself was great and made me want to come back to try even more dishes. The cheesesteak was piled high with meat and had a good amount of cheese sauce on a toasted bun. It could've used a touch more seasoning, but I understand the cook might have been cautious about going too heavy-handed. The cheese-loaded fries were tasty as well, but next time, I'll definitely go for the waffle fries. Overall, the experience wasn't perfect, but it came very close. A Solid Cheesesteak Experience at Cleavers Cleavers in Philadelphia offers one of the better cheesesteaks in the city, and that's no small feat in a place known for this iconic sandwich. We opted for takeout, so we didn't get to soak in the ambiance or interact much with the staff, but the food spoke volumes. We ordered the Cleaver's Cheesesteak 'wit wiz' and a side of onion rings. The onion rings were a pleasant surprise - they managed to stay crispy despite being delivered, which makes me believe they would be even better fresh from the kitchen. The cheesesteak, priced at $30, might seem a bit steep, but it was generously loaded with meat and cheese. The bread was fresh, and the balance of meat to cheese to bread was just right. Cleavers in Philadelphia is a decent spot for a cheesesteak, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The atmosphere is lively and the staff are friendly, which made for a pleasant dining experience. However, the main attraction--the cheesesteak--fell a bit short of my expectations. The sandwich itself was generously portioned and the bread had a nice, soft texture. Unfortunately, the meat was somewhat bland and lacked the juicy, flavorful punch I was hoping for. The cheese was melted perfectly, but it didn't quite meld with the rest of the ingredients to create that iconic cheesesteak taste. The menus is impressive as well!! A must go if you're around Rittenhouse and you don't want to go out of your way for some of the more iconic (and overrated) establishments. These are premium cheesesteaks with generous servings and a variety of options for meat/toppings. You pay premium prices for it as well, but the quality is well worth it. Solid beer options too, if you want to crack open a cold one while enjoying the amazing food. Be advised: You need to specify toppings. If you order just a "cheesesteak" all you will get is bread, meat and cheese (and maybe that's exactly what you want). Spacious and comfortable upstairs seating with utensils/condiments. Overall, I enjoyed my first couple visits and look forward to trying all of their different menu items. read more

This was my first time eating at Cleavers and the food selection was up to par. However the experience I had was revolting. The male manager was yelling at the top of his lungs at one of his female employees in the bar area with patrons watching in horror. This lead to him literally firing this poor girl and asking her to clock out in front of paying customers (??). Making a ridiculous scene like this with the poor girl sobbing and begging to keep her job was unprofessional and made us all uncomfortable. I do not know the backstory of WHY this happened but no matter the circumstance, you conduct your business in the back, not in front of customers. I would not return. read more
