I try to eat healthy, but every once in a while I want some fried chicken. Tonight was one of those times, and I went looking on Yelp to see if there were any new places close to home. Turns out Clifford's has opened since the last time I went looking. I went with my husband and our two teenage boys. I had a chicken breast the collard greens and a biscuit. My husband had a fish and chicken combo, and the boys had chicken tenders with fries. We all agreed the chicken and biscuits were fantastic. I had a bite of my husband's fish and thought it that was pretty good, and he liked it too. My collard greens were phenomenal, but I couldn't get anyone else at the table to try them. Their loss. We ate there because I don't like my food getting cold on the ride home. But it came out very hot, and I think it would have stayed hot until we got home if we had we taken it to go. The guys working there were friendly and we had a nice conversation while we waited for our food. We will definitely go back to Clifford's the next time one of us is hit with the fried chicken craving. read more

My Husband and I were hankering for Fried Chicken and so we "Yelped" "Best Fried Chicken" and Cliffords came up top of the charts!! Did a little deep dive into the reviews and decided that we'd take a chance as we both like the off the beaten path vibe. Upon first glance the restaurant was bright, tidy, clean and had a couple of tables of diners at 615pm in the evening. Greeted right away the staff was truly helpful and patient while we stared at the menu and went .... "uhh" ... "uhhh" ... "I want ......" "uhhhh". Deciding on the chicken tenders, (which came with fries and a biscuit), and some A-La-Carte piece of chicken we found the total bill superreasonable. We grabbed a table (under the heater which as CLUTCH) and eavesdropped on the handful of diners that followed us sharing where they had heard of this relatively new neighborhood spot. A short wait soon had our table FILLED with bright red boxes of chicken and fries ... oh and biscuits (YUM). ONE. SMALL. SUGGESTION .... for the dine in orders maybe reusable baskets with CC&F paper. Im thinking that would cut down on the trash and that whole footprint issue. The tenders were epic. Ten out of ten. They were HUGE. Visualize chicken tenders in your mind ... now QUADRUPLE that. Cliffords does not use crap chicken. It was whole tender real pieces of chicken. Battered and seasoned to our liking and I only needed ONE napkin ... not greasy at all. The two pieces of chicken had my Husband committed to coming back again. Again, large healthy pieces of chicken that was NOT overwhelmed with batter/breading. The fries .... okay I consider myself a fry connoisseur and these fries are slammin!! What is it the kids say?? "No cap". I did NOT bust out the ketchup or even bother to dip in the multiple sauces that we had. Naked these fries are easily my Bay Area top three. I wish we had room to try one of the desserts but like I said ... MASSIVE portions!! We took the leftovers, which was probably an entire meal to my Niece who said "Hey! Cliffords. First time trying it, and I absolutely loved it! I got 3 pieces catfish with fries & honey biscuits! So damn good! It reminded me of southern cooking and just a home feeling cooking! It's a good spot for a quick lunch. My friend and I ordered seasoned chicken, catfish, fries and a couple of buns. My favorite was the bun haha. Fried chicken - I did not find anything special. I'd driven by Clifford's many times but hadn't ever gone in! After reading some good reviews, I decided to give it a try. Ordered the chicken strip box that came with fries and a biscuit, and it did not disappoint! They make your order fresh and it's piping hot when you receive it. The strips were juicy and tender and the fries were hot and fresh. The biscuit was different than what I was expected (a bit dense) but I liked it! Will definitely be back! read more

Tried the chicken, fish and shrimp today with sides of collards and mac. The chicken is delicious, juicy and crispy with a bit of saltiness to the meat. The fish and shrimp have a cornmeal coating that adds a good crunch. Nice portions and very tasty. The mac & cheese was a bit pasty, but has good, creamy cheese flavor. The collard greens are a stand-out; slow cooked with ham and chili flake. We'll certainly come back again. read more

I got the catfish combo, and added a side of collard greens, plus one chicken wing. I really liked everything, my chicken wing could have been a little crispier and warmer in temperature. **This review is gonna start out sounding like I'm tearing this establishment down, but trust me it's all for the good** This place is classic case of a hole in the wall restaurant**(there. The bad tasting pill out of the way. Now comes the praise). I mean that in all good tense and purpose because it is a treasure and hiding in plain sight. It's in a sort of run down business park next to an acupuncture place and hair salon, but sometimes good things are meant to be hidden so we can seek them out/ go exploring and find what's splendid about them. The service is very pleasant; I especially enjoyed a conversation with one of the mangers on duty. Had a very outgoing personality about them and they suggested great things to try on the menu (it was my first time visiting). The portions exceed expectations and I almost wasn't able to finish what I had ordered, and not to mention the pricing! It's extremely affordable (something that is dire as of right now in our community and about these desperate times). It is definitely a great case of you get what you pay for. The chicken is tender and seasoned extremely harmoniously. The biscuit that came with my order was flaky and soft in the middle (only way it should be!). The shrimp, catfish, and thighs are delicious! They have collard greens, red beans & rice, and yummy coleslaw. It's a bit pricey, but if you're hankering for some good quality southern comfort food, this is a way (way way!) better option than KFC (ugh!). I really like supporting small businesses so I looked forward to trying Clifford's. I ordered a fried chicken breast and a side of collard greens. The chicken was just so-so, not moist as other Yelpers said, and nothing was special about the seasoning. The collard greens were so extremely salty that after two bites I had to throw the rest away. A waste of $5. Prices are higher than fast food chains, so I was expecting better quality. Sadly I won't be back. Hate to say that, but Yelp works when we give honest reviews. Stopped in on their opening night, Dec 4, while walking by and happened to notice the lights on. We were warmly welcomed by the very friendly staff and placed our order: 4-piece mixed fried chicken meal and a beer (my husband) & 4-piece fried chicken tenders (me) - both meals came with fries and a honey butter biscuit. The chicken was perfectly delicious, crispy and juicy. The fries were perfectly seasoned with the perfect crispy texture. Each meal was a very generous portion of both chicken and fries so that we saved half for lunch the next day. Biscuits were delicious - though that may be the only item I would say could be larger. For anyone who likes very spicy - mango habanero sauce was great. Though there weren't many people there, there was a bit of a wait til we got our food - but being opening night, completely understandable that they were still figuring things out - plus we knew that meant all of our food was fresh. The staff apologized for the wait and offered us a comp beverage or dessert as a goodwill gesture which we appreciated but declined as we didn't feel it was needed. Amazing and reasonably priced southern food right near downtown Mountain View. The chicken is fried up to order and is perfectly crispy and juicy. The sides are just as good! Highly recommend the collard greens and red beans and rice. The cornbread and biscuits are also incredible. The service is good, but since chicken is fried when you order it be prepared to wait a little bit. On the plus size, when you order it to carry out your food is still warm when you get it home!
