A cozy, cute little cafe located in downtown Davis! The ambiance is very casual; the wooden tables and chairs look like they belong in someone's home. The red walls and framed portraits make the place slightly more unique. This is a refreshing place to go to after spending a lot of time in chain coffee shops such as Philz and Starbucks! Cloud Forest Cafe attracts a diverse crowd. The cafe hosts a constant crowd of college students who are studying and older folks who are catching up over coffee. Service is great! The baristas are friendly and efficient. Buzzers notify you when your food is ready at the counter. Keep in mind that if you want to work or study here for a long time, you are limited to 2 hours of free wifi per order. To renew your wifi code, you will have to place another order. [ Avocado Toast ] The avocado was evenly sliced and the olive oil that they coat the toast with really boosted its flavor. The toast itself was a slice of white bread (I think). I found it really difficult to cut the toast into pieces but that might just be me. Aw man. I'm really sad to say this, but Cloud Forest Cafe has really gone downhill since the last time I went to school in Davis...7 years ago. I know it's been a while, but my experience when I last came here a few days ago was a real bummer. The paninis that I ordered took more than 30 minutes to come out, which came out far later than my drinks. The drinks were finished by the time the food came out. The paninis weren't all that great, and the chai latte was too sweet for my liking. I don't mind spending money for quality food, drink, and experience, but man, I felt cheated out of my money. The owner( old Asian guy) is out of the box RUDE. My co worker and I are in Davis attending a conference and this Cafe is near our hotel so we went in for coffee and pastries. We ordered two Chai Latte's and ricotta bread with fruit. The Chai was not hot so my coworker asked him to warm it for 40 secs and he said "OK whatever." Then I asked to warm my Chai aswell and he said, "why didn't you ask me at the same time ? I have customers waiting." There was one person in line behind me. I went ahead and said , "that was rude." Refusing to remake a ruined poached egg. Cloud Forest Cafe charged me $12.50 plus tax for avocado toast with a poached egg. I should have known the amount of food would not be enough for the price, but I was fine with it. Then I cut into the egg to find it nearly hard boiled, with only a little bit of it soft like a poached egg is supposed to be. I considered just leaving it be, but for $12.50 they could at least poach the egg. I went back and they said I would have to pay for a new egg. I was not about to pay for what should have been good in the first place, so I sat back down. Luckily, the cashier who took our order was amazing. She was so nice when she helped my girlfriend and I initially and when she presented my egg to the kitchen. Later, she came out with a fresh poached egg that seemed like she either convinced the kitchen staff at length or paid for it out of her tip. We were honestly moved by how kind she was. I tried out Cloud Forest Cafe with a friend due to us receiving gift cards from UC Davis from their coronavirus testing sites. The owner of the cafe was there taking orders; he was very friendly and kind and I could tell that he really enjoyed serving his customers. I had the Iced Caramel Latte, which turned out to be 5.15. It was a little bit expensive in my opinion but definitely worth it due to the fact the funds support a small business during the pandemic. Cloud Forest Cafe was always a favorite of mine during my college days at UC Davis. Forget Shields, this cafe was my place to get sh*t done. I recently went through Davis after coming back to Tahoe and had to stop here! Ohhhhh the memories.... The cafe has enough tables to have your own space; could get busy at times so be aware of that. They have a full menu for your study munchies- bagels, baked goods, toast, sandwiches, etc. I go for COFFEE obviously and freshly squeezed juices! I was and am a huge sucker for these juices here- beet orange carrot... yum! I crave them constantly. I've been to other juice joints but nothing quite tastes as fresh as Cloud Forest. The price is typical for freshly squeezed juices (maybe slightly cheaper) but that doesn't shy me away from ordering a large... cause it's so damn good. We jumped in to escape the cold and decided to get 2 teas. The owner looks at us and says, "that's all you're going to buy for that many people?" TWO of the 5 were babies and my 4-yr-old had already eaten breakfast. Who asks questions like that? We abruptly left back into the cold weather for another coffee shop. Talk about insensitive people. And funny thing is we were just getting tea to recover from the cold. We were going to buy more. I don't recommend these rude owners to anyone. I was getting my car worked on earlier this morning. I Google search nearby breakfast places that were open. I saw this was one of the few open at 8 AM. I walked down and was pleased to find a nice little breakfast selection of Panini's and avocado toast. There was also a nice copy selection. I am a black coffee kind of gal so I did not try anything fancy. The gentleman behind the counter was nice. I suspect he is the owner. The avocado toast was great in the coffee was good. It's a place to go for sure. My Dad and I both got the breakfast sandwich, with a coffee for him and a hot chocolate for me. Not sure if maybe it was just that morning or what, but we both agree that our stomachs felt... odd to say the least later. I definitely enjoyed the food and drink as they went down the hatch though. I wish I could give a negative star - the Asian man who helped me was so rude and got upset when I asked about the food and whether or not it had peanuts since my daughter has a severe allergy. It was our first visit here (and our last). When I asked he responded so rudely and said "Does it say it has peanuts?!" I was shocked and tried to respectfully explain that some menus do not list every ingredient and there is also the chance of cross contamination. When I told him he didn't have to be rude about it, he responded "likewise". I seriously would have walked out but my kids were so hungry. I don't understand why he would take my question so personally. Thank you to the young woman, I think a college student, who apologized on his behalf (although she didn't have to). I read some reviews just now and I wish I read them before we came here -- this man seems to have a track record of being rude to customers. If you go here, make sure you have no sign of being a student (you have a backpack, a laptop, etc.) The owner is very unwelcoming to students even if you don't need their wifi and you're not studying there. Avoid if you are a clearly a student. He was very nice to all the other customers who did not seem to be students, which was very awkward to see him switch his demeanor so quickly based on who he was serving! I was trying to give the owner the benefit of the doubt, thinking that it is understandable that they would want their coffee shop to stand out as the one to go to that is not packed with students who stay there for hours. However, when I left I found him to be very rude. I was looking for where to put my latte mug before I left, and he rudely said "put it there - it says 'dishes' ", as if I could not read. Really tasty mocha ice blended drink. They were able to make it decaf which makes me super happy. The sandwich was nice and the potato salad tasted like horseradish which was fun. I had a cappuccino, an avo poached egg toast (very well seasoned!) and an almond butter and banana walnut toast that had some honey drizzle on it. I tried the Cloud Forest Panini because it has come up a lot in other Yelp reviews of this cafe and, duh, because of the name. Was the turkey, Jack cheese, avocado, mayo, pesto, tomato, spring mix panini good? Sure. Would I eat it again? Probably not. The whole sandwich was nicely toasted and the ingredients melded together well. I chose the side of carrot sticks and was rather disappointed when I received a grand total of 5 carrot sticks. For me, the turkey meat was rather salty, and there was too much mayo for my liking. I might visit again because this place has a lot of juice offerings and offers a cozy environment for studying. I hate to leave such a harsh rating as I've previously had good experiences, however today was unacceptable. Along with my food, I ordered a hot vanilla latte with almond milk, something I've ordered previously here. However, it tasted very metallic and watery... and for a $5+ latte, I expect a decent drink. I went back up to the counter to let the owner (?) (older Asian male) know, however he snapped at me and rudely said I could not leave the drink there. When I told him that the flavor was off and it tasted very metallic, he said "and what do you want me to do about it?" How inappropriate to treat a customer that way. I ordered a chai latte instead and he got mad at me because I did not have a buzzer, even though he was the one that took the buzzer that I had for my previous order... It took 20 minutes for a 12oz chai latte to be made, and it was lukewarm. I'm quite disappointed that he was not willing to refund my latte or comp the chai latte for me. Additionally, when my friend asked him for the bathroom key, he retorted with quite an insulting remark. I will no longer support this establishment. I am quite disappointed as I've had good experiences in the past, however regardless of whether he was having a bad day or not, it is unacceptable to treat your customers like this.
