$1 Coffee! There, I said it. Yup, it's true... cheapest cup o' Joe in town, and it's good! Another new-to-me find that I'm happy I found. My job recently sent me through Sun Valley many times a day. I saw the building, noticed the 2-story parking garage and the large, well-lit parking lot, and always something interesting on the marquee. So, on a bright Saturday morning that allowed me a day to enjoy sleeping in, I decided I was gonna finally get up to Hobey's for breakfast. I was impressed with the layout of the casino floor; a short straight walk to the Cafe entrance. A warm, inviting acknowledgment at the podium, and I'm seated right away. Within a few minutes, a super-friendly waitress is at my table pointing out their new menu... and the Breakfast Specials. I chose the Bacon Breakfast Sandwich and a Side Order of B&G's; I plan to have leftovers. I made a wise decision. The gravy is your typical cafe-style, white and creamy, but I swear I could taste a little extra Chef Love. A secret ingredient, maybe. My coffee cup was NEVER empty, and I didn't feel rushed to finish my meal. It was a morning well spent. read more

NEW OWNERS STRIKE AGAIN Why would someone spend millions to by an established local treasure that's been serving us perfectly for 35 years & destroy it ?? Start by walking in the doors and immediately have to maneuver through a maze/glut of slots to get anywhere. They removed the smoke cleansing machines & now it smells & looks like an opium den. The foul odor of tobacco now permeates itself right into their dining room. They've moved every booth & table for reasons known only to the thoughtless management. They removed the seniors & youngsters items from the menu, cut the choices by at least by 50% & of course raised the prices. They even removed the recently remodeled bathroom's from the restaurant. Now you have to walk all the way back to the building's entrance to find one. Let's not dare mention the destruction of employee morale and removal of their employment benefits. Perhaps they should concentrate their growth to Las Vegas where people don't know any better or don't care. They have ruined a locally owned business with their corperate greed, lack of thoughtfulness or concern for what the local community, the ones keeping them in business, actually wants.. Stopped in since it was taken over by the folks at the Tammarack. Had an amazing dinner. The food was hot and flavorful. Really enjoyed the prime rib. It was cooked to perfection. I noticed the new decor it adds a fresh new look. The service was slow although not busy. We had to ask a few times for the check and boxes to go. Still not giving up on this place. The food made up ten fold. I will recommend this to anyone looking for a good breakfast and dinner spot. read more

The restaurant was clean and inviting. The new owners did a complete renovation. There's a new menu with less options. They took away the Senior menu. That's very disappointing. Our server, Celina, was friendly and attentive. She kept our beverages filled and made sure we were satisfied. I had a Patty Melt with fries. It was very good. The fries were crispy. This was the first time dining here that we smelled a strong cigarette odor. It smelled like someone was smoking at the table next to us. This is a great place for locals. read more

This is it! My 100th review! Grandpa took me to this place for dinner so I was quite intrigued to try it! One immediate issue that I had was that the restaurant was not tucked away further from the casino, so the smell of cigarette reached into here, and that was unpleasant. However, the service from the multiple waiters was pleasant as they checked on us, took our order quickly, and were all nice and friendly! I got the chicken fried steak! The accompanying veggies were, not good, they didn't taste very good and grandpa said they tasted burnt. The fries were rather bland, with little seasoning or flavor with it. Finally the steak, the steak was pretty good, it was well cooked and flavorful, though I wasn't much of a fan of the taste of the sauce with it, but I just wiped it aside! Overall, I would say the experience was rather mediocre, the service of the servers spoke louder than the food did. The food, while not terrible, is definitely not something I would come back for. If it wasn't for the fact that this was my 100th review, and that my grandfather was with me, nothing about this experience would have been all that enjoyable. read more

The casino has gotten a huge remodel and is so much better. The only thing is there are no table games, so be prepared for just slots. The cafe is okay, nothing insane. We ate at the coffee shop at hobeys for dinner, and I am so glad we did. My husband ordered a salad, and I ordered the pasta special. It was tortellini with some kind of lemon cream sauce with spinach and shrimp. It was so delicious. This is the sort of dish you order at La Strada or a steak house. This dish was phenomenal. Found out they have a new chef and he is trying new specials out. We'll thank you, because this one is a total winner. I hope they have this one again soon. read more

Today is the second time my wife and I have eaten in the Coffee Shop since it was remodeled. The first time was actually during the renovation, today's visit after. Both times we noticed that the taste of the food was not the same as we remembered, in particular the pancakes I had and the hash browns my wife had. In addition, most all of the wait staff looked like they were under pressure to hurry through their interactions with customers. The two people that served us barely engaged with any pleasant conversation and gave us the feeling that they couldn't wait to get away from us. I don't know if they're being timed by management now or not but it was a palpable change in demeanor. They weren't UNfriendly but def not engaging. I hope these issues are temporary ( especially the taste issues) but I think we'll take a pause on Hobey's for awhile and maybe come back next year. read more

I don't write reviews, but I'm so tired of such lousy service and products that I'm making an exception. I realize that everyone nowadays wants a review. Well, here it is: First, to place a to go order over the phone you have to pay an 18% TIP IN ADVANCE! Tipping is out of control, but honestly, requiring a tip BEFORE they have done anything is outrageous. Plus, she was such a peach to deal with... Second, the food was disgusting. They have changed the menu and it is terrible. This fish and chips was burnt to a crisp. If I had been at a table I would have refused to be served this and walked out, but because it was to go, they passed completely inedible food off on me. There is no excuse, the "chef" and the server both saw what it looked like. They should be ashamed, but I know they aren't. It's not the same Hobey's. It's not the same food. It's not the same service. I understand they have been bought out by someone else. Well, whoever they are, they are certainly into cheating their customers. "No, you can't have ranch." Another win for "corporate greed." We've been coming here for 35 years. It's a shame that Sun Valley doesn't rate a grocery store or a decent "casino/restaurant". Maybe stop remodeling and put the money into a better customer experience. I'm not just saying this, but I will not return to Hobey's. They have nothing to offer me that would make me give them another dime. They've lost my business. I realize they don't care, but it's the only recourse I have. I've let you know my experience (sadly the last few times have been the same). I know lots of people will still like Hobey's, but I'm giving my honest review. Couldn't get into Los Altos Breakfast & Lunch restaurant on a saturday morning without waiting 1 hr...I said nope. So I read on Yelp of Hobies Casino had a good cafe inside, so off we went. 10 minutes later we were in the cafe. I had the Eggs Benedict Royale..so did my wife. OMG, the plate was huge with 3 eggs over muffin and hollandaise sauce, hashbrowns..way more than I expected, all for 16 bucs. All other restaurants, black bear, dennys, etc..give you 2 eggs over muffin for 20 bucs!..I will be back...super good. read more

Reading the past unfavorable reviews leaves me puzzled. Maybe because it was before they went through a remodel. This was my second visit in October, both times on Sundays late morning. Both times service was as good as one can expect. My wife had omelets and I had their biscuits and gravy. Both were great! Coffee was fresh and cups quickly refilled. The cocktail waiter is bad you order a drink he forgets it many times. I tip good there is no reason for this.The drawing on sat. I seen them pull names out and set them aside not even call them Why? I have spent thousands of dollars in there to be treated like shit. This past 3 weeks have been bad in my eye's. There is a lot of Sun Valley people that don't want to come there anymore. My wife and I have been eating at Hobey's for over forty years and we understand Tamarack has taken over there. We enjoyed the senior specials especially the shrimp Louie and the hot turkey and hot beef sandwich's from the regular menu. They are all gone. I ordered pancakes last visit and they were dry and didn't taste at all like the ones I've had there for years. The service and staff is still fantastic but Tamarack has ruined the food offerings. We are very sad about this because it was always one of our go to places even though we don't live in the immediate area. read more

Nice Mom and Pop style of restaurant. Very affordable, with great service. I enjoyed my hot open sliced turkey with gravy and mashed potato meal very much. My Bride had the liver and onions dinner, which she proclaimed was the best she's ever had! The other couple in our party had one of the daily specials which were three pork chops with sides. A great little casino in Sun Valley. A large variety of Slot machines. This casino has been here for over 32 years. Like all casinos in the area, they have a players club with rewards. Food was mediocre, worst part, they just shut down the restrooms in the restaurant so even if you're handicapped you will need to walk to one end or the other of the casino to use a restroom. My party got seated right away on a Monday night. Kids are offered two coloring activities with a box of crayons. My son loved it and was preoccupied until the food came. I had a vegi sandwich, which was pretty good. The onion rings for $1.50 more we're delicious too. My son got the spaghetti with marinara sauce and he also seemed to like it. Came here with some friends for dinner, and the staff were able to seat the 8 of us fairly quickly. Our friends who recently moved to Reno were raving about the burgers so the majority of us ordered burgers. To be quite honest it was alright, just a standard bacon burger. Nothing fancy or extra, a little on the greasier side and over cooked. If your wanting a nice place to gather then yeah this place is great, fairly quiet and clean. I've lived in Reno for 15 years and have never been to Honeys restaurant before. Last night my husband and I decided to try it. The hostess was very friendly and polite and sat us very quickly. Had a gentle man ask us what we would like to drink right away. Marco was are waiter and ask us if we were ready to order. Came in recently for a quick dinner with my parents. It had been a long time since I've been to Hobey's, so I hadn't seen the coffee shop renovations. In the past I've always had great experiences here. It's definitely updated and much more open and is well lit, which is pleasant. They weren't busy on a Wednesday night, so we were seated promptly. Our server was very kind and helpful. We all ordered different burgers and they were fairly good. I ordered the Western Burger and it was good, although it definitely needs cheese. The french fries were crispy and delicious. The onion rings however, were lacking severely and quite mushy, so I wouldn't order those again. read more

We used to go to Hobey's all the time for lunch at the coffee shop. Used to be great at great prices. My wife, son, grandson and others went to dinner in February. My wife hated her patty melt. She said it was gross. We took our son there just last night for a birthday dinner. My son did not care for his patty melt. My western burger was not very good, and my wife....she ordered the 2 piece chicken strips with fries, but wanted 3 pieces of chicken. $5.00 more....they still gave her 2 pieces. We wanted to just pay and get the hell out once and for all. Not going back. And to add.....the chicken, it looks and tastes like breaded frozen tyson strips. Not freshly made like they should be. We have been going to Hobey's since the 90's.....not worth it. I'd rather get burger at McDonald's, and McDonald's is gross !!!!!! And fries were half burnt. You think the cook would notice. We left most of the fries behind from 2 orders. Burger patty looks like a thin patty in the frozen section of Winco. No flavor what so ever either. We've had fish and chips over cooked as well in the past. After multiple disappointments, we are DONE !!! Hobey's has gone down hill badly. How did I miss this place until now? We attended a wine dinner in the Steakhouse and it was wonderful! Marco and Kevin - and the whole staff - took very good care of us. The food, the wine, the company - all delightful! Started with a delicious crab cake. Move on to an amazing blackberry spinach salad - the dressing was to die for - sounds a bit crazy - but it was terrific!! Next was the main - perfectly cooked filet (well, it is a steakhouse) with a bordelaise sauce, yummy potatoes and herb roasted veg. Did I mention the delicious chocolate torte? After hearing all of the hype around Sun Valley Steakhouse, we thought we'd give it a try last night. Located in Hobey's Casino in Sun Valley (North Valley area), it is an easy hop on the 580 and turn right on Clear Acre and keep going, located on the left. Ample parking. This was their first week of opening after the COVID pandemic and reservations were already booked through the following week. Capacity is at 50% there and they follow mask requirements. Kevin was our waiter and he is very friendly and attentive. Marco is the manager. Everyone made sure that our needs were met and that is one characteristic that sets this restaurant out from others. The food was very good. I had the ribeye steak with a baked potato. We had sauteed mushrooms as an appetizer and chocolate mousse for dessert. The steak was cooked to my liking. Potatoes were tender. Even the vegetables (squash) was yummy! The decor is that of an older steakhouse. I would recommend it. Very nice dinner! read more
