I am happy I got to try this place yesterday evening. The staff was helpful and the atmosphere of the place was fun. I like that you can see back into the kitchen from the front of the dining room. I ordered the main chick combo with tater tots, mac/cheese and an Arnold Palmer. The absolute highlight was the huge sandwich! It was juicy, tender and flavorful. They added the perfect amount of slaw and sauce too. However, I took one star away for the mac and cheese because it needed more flavor and I know they can do better. Ordered food after studying menu, $11 for a chicken sandwich is pretty pricy, with no sides....But it was a heck of a sandwich and they are using quality products. I have been around this area many times and never noticed this place. I guess you have to be looking for eats to find this place. This echoes of similarities between howling rays in LA and crimson coward in Downey, but this time in Long Beach. Having southern style chicken is all the craze nowadays and I can see why. These places give hey pieces of chicken that is flavorful and delicious. It is very difficult to eat these foods without getting your hands dirty. But that's how you know the southern style chicken is good. I got medium spicy, which was perfect for my palette. The fries were also very hot and fresh! The only reason I docked a star was because the chicken wasn't as hot and juicy as I thought it would be. It was almost as if it was sitting out for a little while (it was really busy when we went). The slaw and pickles married well with the chicken. The bread they used is good. Soft and covered a good amount of the chicken! The COMEBACK SAUCE they put on the sandwich is great too! On the sandwich and on the side! The FRIES were sub par. Soggy, not really well seasoned. I didn't quite enjoy 'em. They did taste better, however, dipped into the comeback sauce. I've been waiting for this place to open for several months but started losing interest when the initial opening date kept getting pushed out. I think the original opening date was suppose to be in September, then got pushed out to October, and kept getting pushed further out. I guess there were several problems with getting approval from the city. Not necessarily the fault of this place, but still annoying. Well, the official opening date is suppose to be this coming Monday November 4, but I got a chance to try it today, thanks to a tip from my fellow Yelper, Derek W. This is a Nashville style chicken place that serves fried chicken with various levels of heat, ranging from plain (Chicken) to extremely spicy (Call The Morgue). In one of the previous articles written about this place, it mentioned you need to sign a waiver and wear gloves if you are going to go for the hottest spice level, but didn't see any warning disclosure when I went today. I got The Main Chick, which is a fried chicken sandwich with coleslaw, comeback sauce, and pickles. I got it with level 4 heat which is called Feel It Twice (hot). This was a lot hotter than I expected. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and I liked all other ingredients in the sandwich, although i would've preferred sweet pickles instead of regular pickles to balance out some of the spiciness. Portion was pretty generous. I got the same for my wife but ordered it with medium heat (Better!). For her, even the medium heat was too much and couldn't finish her sandwich. Mac & Cheese was pretty good too. It was rich but not too salty. I would say this place is comparable to Jay Bird's Chicken, which is located around the corner at The Hangar, but I give slight edge to this place. In terms of flavor, they are quite similar but this place has better price and has little more options to customize your meal. Here you can just get the sandwich by itself. Jay Bird's adds one side and charges more as a result. Even getting the sandwich and side separately, the price here is still better (at least at the moment). read more

So the chicken sandwich. Main chick, (hilarious btw, the smaller version is called the "side chick") is a bomb ass sandwich with a full chicken breast that's fried. Now I tried no heat on the sandwich and was so happy I did cause it was soooo flavorful. Now the chicken tenders are literally big chunks of chicken breast. No processed meat. I got that in mild. And I have to say it was spicy for my palette. It's that lip burning, oh I snuck up on you, you thought you could enjoy this kind of heat. Normally I can do habanero. But this is a different heat. Soft opening was today and boy was I not disappointed. First let me start off, that I came at noon when their soft opening was supposed to start at 11. However, they said they weren't going to be ready until 4pm today and gave us a goody box to go. This comprised of two cookies and a side of Mac and cheese and a menu/coupon. Cookies were good, ate them on the way leaving the establishment. The Mac & cheese is definitely something to rave about. They use the seashell noodles and the spices in the Mac & cheese is definitely good. So I guess it should be called something else since they do not use macaroni pasta. lol When we came back, we were not told to limit what we wanted. I ordered a 3 piece tender (better, medium) along with a side chick better and a side of fries well done. I also got a bottled water and a sprite. While waiting, the staff brought an off the menu item of loaded fries topped with cut up chicken tenders, comeback sauce and pickles in a mild seasoning. The mild seasoning has a small kick to it but not overwhelming. The staff came around and asked if it was okay, yes. We asked about the heat level because they said the highest level they are currently going to is a medium. But the guy said they are actually serving hot. So they brought out two wings on a slice of bread in feel it twice (hot) so we could try it. Definitely good. The heat kind of builds up but I definitely think I can go up another level. The portion of the side chick and tenders are HUGEEE!! way more than someone can finish. I had so much food to take home, and it was all free. The only thing I would probably suggest working on is their comeback sauce. I felt like it has a strong sour/vinegar taste to it. Like that definitely kind of ruined the rest of the experience for me as the sauce is everything to food like this. The side chick wasn't my favorite thing on the menu either. I reheated in the oven at home when I got hungry again, and it didn't hold its flavor and seasoning. So I really enjoyed the wings and the tenders are hefty sizes. I really liked the fries as well, you can't go wrong with shoestring fries. In comparison to their local rivals I definitely think they're better than their closest rival, Jay Birds; who is literally two blocks away. On a heat level, i definitely think Cluck n Blaze hot is more of a mild/medium compared to howlin rays in LA or Fire Bird in Long Beach. Which now makes me want to try their extra hot to see where it scales on my heat meter. I definitely like that their food isn't dripping in oils like Crimson Coward I'm Downey, but in comparison to all competitors; it would be ranked closest to them. My list from best to least is Fire Bird, Howlin Rays, Cluck n Blaze, Crimson Coward, and then Jay Birds. WOWOWOWOW! The workers here made this experience so much more amazing. Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious! But sheesh I've never ate at a place with a more passionate staff that was so ready to feed us chicken lovers! How sweet are they?!? He came back to check on how we liked the flavor and when we told him that we enjoy spicy food, he came back with 2 hot wings! They are soooooo generous! The food was delicious! The chicken was flavorful and crispy. The mac'n cheese was sooo creamy and a definite must! The sidechick was yummy but they're not as as big as the other nhc restaurants. The tenders are huuuuugggeee! They will def fill you up! The food is bomb, very delicious, spice levels are great, with a good amount of flavor. The service is very much, take order and get out, which is totally cool. But there's a few reasons why I couldn't give 5 stars. One, the amount of waste produced by this small establishment is absurd. I live around the area and often see so much waste left behind. Bags and boxes, and it's all not reusable. Plastics, single use, and not biodegradable. I feel guilty every time I eat here. I know it's not the establishment's fault for the waste left behind, but why don't I see jack in the box waste. I think it's because there's just so much packaging. In my photo, I have the side chick sandwich. Small, tasty, slaw, comeback sauce, juicy chicken, but the box is so oversized, there's two wrappings, with the large plastic bag and a plastic stick to hold the sandwich together, all single use. All going in the trash. It feels wrong. The pricing is another reason I can't give it 5 stars. The food is good, but they're reaching. I only come here every so often because I don't think it's as good as the pricing entails, especially when it's cheaper to buy things separately and the abysmally small cup for your drink filled with ice, and small side of fries usually served much colder than the sandwich, I've learned to just buy a sandwich by itself. Add up the pieces of the new side chick meal, it's 11.50 but the meal is 12.99, a dollar less than the main chick meal. It's kind of insulting. Is this a good spot to eat? Once and a while, absolutely. Is the food great, it's incredible. But with so many other options out there, I can't help but feel like I am doing better for my wallet, my planet, and my body by opting out for something healthier, better for the environment, and something I feel I am getting my money's worth from, like more than 3 gulps of a drink, warm fries, and a sandwich that doesn't cost so much when I am honestly still hungry after eating here. I'm a huge fan of fried chicken sandwiches, so I had to try this place when I was down in Long Beach. WOW, this place is SO good! I highly recommend getting a MAIN CHICK COMBO. When you get the combo, you end up saving $2.50 (you get the drink for free). In the combo, you get a: - Main Chick Sandwich (huge chicken breast, comes with cole slaw and pickles) (at mild, it's already pretty spicy!) - 1 side (tots and fries, coleslaw, or mac and cheese) - 1 drink (lemonade or soda) At $14 a combo meal, it's not the cheapest, but it's definitely worth it in terms of both quality and quantity. Quality wise, the flavors of the chicken sandwich are spot on. It tastes better than any of chicken sandwiches from the fast food chains I know. The batter is well done and crispy and you get an actual huge fresh chicken breast with white meat. Quantity wise, you get the bang for your buck. The chicken sandwich is huge! They're generous with the side orders of tots/fries/mac&cheese. One note is that as they prepare everyone's meals fresh and hot, the wait time can be a little long. We waited about 25 minutes for our sandwich, but you can definitely shorten the wait time by ordering online. They also had super friendly workers and great service! I am someone who tolerates spice pretty well while my partner is not someone who eats spicy things often. I love Jay Birds as well, but I think cluck and blaze may be a tad better. Sorry Jay. Loved the sauce, could have stood with more of it. Nashville hot chicken tastings have been my jam for the last six months or so. Unfortunately, I've had to remain in SoCal but there's tons of chicken spots in the region. Cluck and Blaze caught my eye on a local staycation in Long Beach, primarily because of the Nashville Hot Breakfast Burrito. My family can attest that, burritos are my choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner so when I saw the burrito on the menu, my heat leapt and fingers twitched as I ordered through the Yelp app. For the first time in a long time, I didn't need a side sauce for the burrito because it had everything I wanted! So... lately, I have been a bit addicted to adds on Instagram for local food spots. The other day, the breakfast chicken burrito from this place came on and I showed my hubby. He was sold... and we came here the next morning. I didn't realize this place took over another restaurant that was right next door to my favorite tea spot. Yeah! I was going to kill two birds with one stone. I am so glad I ordered my food online before we arrived because at 10am, they were already very busy. My biggest mistake though, was to order the Hot (Feel it twice) chicken. Hubby and I were sweating, panting, crying while eating. The heat level was a little much and inconsistent (some pieces were super spicy, and others spicy). I usually order mild to enjoy the chicken at most Nashville style chicken spots, but I thought I should be adventurous. My biggest compliment to this place was the batter of the chicken. Stayed crispy and the sauce was pretty good. Mac and cheese was good, but the flour in the roux was a little more prevalent that I prefer. Coleslaw was good, slightly sweet to counteract the spicy chicken. The service was great, and as efficient as possible. They even gave us some free drinks (by accident), but said to keep it anyways. The staff even offered to bring out water for our dogs. It was really juicy and tender. The workers make a big deal of how spicy it is, but it wasn't spicy at all. I would try the highest level of spiciness should I return. The bread was the saddest piece of bread I've seen, but it's not too big of a deal since you're coming here for chicken and not the bread. But overall, while it was a messy eating experience, I really enjoyed how all the flavors complemented each other, with the chicken, cole slaw, bread, and sauce.
