First time last night with my husband. Love the atmosphere and the soothing colors of the restaurant and decor. Our waiter was very attentive, professional, and very nice. I enjoyed everything from appetizer to desert. Appetizer was garlic shrimp with tails attached atop 2 toasted bread slices and drenched in yummy garlic butter. I used the bread brought to the table to sop up the rest of it! Entree, I just had to, was shrimp and grits. So good! Actually gt a picture of it! I LOVE shrimp and grits and try them everywhere. The sauce was delicious. Smooth and not too spicy. The andouille sausage was where the spice was. Perfect for my palette! The shrimp, totally forgot to put, from the appetizer to my entree were huge and perfectly cooked. My husband had the Mediterranean Fried Branzino (sp?) which he had last time he came for business and loved it again! Side were sauteed spinach and acorn squash with brown sugar butter. Although stuffed from my entree, I did try his sides. Very good! And I can't say no to a warm brownie with ice cream and hot fudge. And it had walnuts! Great way to end dinner. We did not have any alcohol. Just water. This is an expensive restaurant but worth the price if you want to have a romantic dinner, business dinner, or an elegant dinner out with friends. My family and I have had "Family Dinner" at local VB & Norfolk restaurants for years, and will continue to experience all the fine cuisine that our local restaurants have to offer. However, last night, we celebrated a family members birthday at Coastal Grill, and when we brought in his special Chocolate Mousse cake (that you can't usually find on restaurant menus), we were told that "there is a cutting and plating cost for the waitress to do that." I was surprised, first of all that a fine dining restaurant like Coastal would charge their patrons this fee...I understand, they may be losing some $$ by not selling us "their" desserts....but the cake was a specially prepared cake, chocolate mousse. I told the waitress "that is not a problem, I can pay that fee"; after all Coastal isn't exactly McDonalds, so I have money to spend there. The 10 of us all enjoyed a nice meal. When the cake was served, the waitress asked "anyone want ice cream with it?" We all said yes. The purpose of my YELP Review is to let everyone know what the restaurant charged me... to cut the cake, put it on a plate, with ice cream. $39+ to cut the cake and $39+ for the ice cream!!!! I was shocked at this high price, I spoke to the manager, who said "it is our 'Policy" I told her I could and would pay the costs, but we would never eat there again. When the waitress mentioned that there is a cake service fee to do a cake from 'outside', she should have SAID, it will be nearly $40! If she had done that, "Perhaps" we would have gone back to our home and enjoyed our desserts there...It really spoiled me for ever going there again. It's not the money, it is the fact that I was shocked at their Policy for clients who spend a lot of money on food and drinks there anyway. They have lost a family that dines out with at least 10-14 people EVERY THURSDAY. read more

The good : the food was excellent and well priced. I had no complaints at all, and our meal was very fresh and delicious. The restaurant is also very well decorated and appealing. The bad: we went for my birthday and based on the reviews and menu I was really looking forward to my visit. Our reservation was set for when the restaurant opened for dinner. We arrived roughly 10 minutes early as we were told when making the reservation that they were packed for mothers day weekend. When we arrived the valet was parking cars and it was down pouring. We figured we could wait at the bar in the meantime. As soon as we entered we were told the restaurant was not open by a female employee and that we needed to wait outside. Not the greatest first impression for our initial visit. We waited in the foyer until what appeared to be the manager said we could come inside to wait at the bar . Made a reservation to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. Had not been to the restaurant since it moved across the street to its new location. Remembered loving the food in the past. We were seated at a tiny little table between two columns under Mirror which was quite uncomfortable for my 6 foot five husband. Service was less than acceptable. The food however was delicious. We had the steak and the salmon entrée, also had the muscles appetizer. Ordered a glass of wine with dinner and the glass was only full.... They should have smaller wineglasses if they're going to serve that amount of wine only. Unfortunately, we probably won't go back because the service was pretty lame. She was a total professional and took great care of us. I'm a little embarrassed that I don't remember her name. My food was excellent. My husband and I went to Coastal a couple weeks ago. As always the food and service were above average. My husband had the tuna and I had the duck breast. Both were prepared perfectly. We split a Caesar salad and I opted to take my portion of the salad home. I placed both our servings of water cress on the salad plate but, unfortunately, they did not make it into the take home container. I put that down to youth and inexperience of the server. Next time I'll know to ask for the cress to be included. I'm old school and when I order an old fashioned, I expect the classic cocktail. I didn't realize the bartender put her own riff on the cocktail and that I needed to ask for a traditional old fashioned. As I said, I'm old school and probably behind the times and need to get out more. Neither of the things I mentioned put a damper on our evening and we had a lovely time. read more

I am always "Amused" by reviews from "Complainer Diners", ('CompDins' for short!), whose expectations are based as if they are the "only" diners in a restaurant. Step One: Dissatisfaction about 'Complimentary Valets' who many times are graciously parking their vehicles in extreme heat, icy cold or heavy downpour. They then jump to not being seated immediately, even if arriving 15-30 mins early. We can only hope they understand that while most establishments open earlier on special dates to provide more time for seatings, (2 to 2-1/2 hrs), lingering at the tables longer after dining during these times make it difficult to meet subsequent reservations. Predictable Step Two: As the server approaches the table, these CompDins instantly get perturbed at them for not knowing exactly what they want: even if or what kind of water or beverage they prefer. (Imagine what occurs when they visit a bistro, coffee shop or stop for fast food: everything is presented in front of them . . . must be complete shut down!) The servers will graciously depart & return allowing them to 'contemplate' these initial & fairly simple beverage (possibly appetizer) selections. Usually after a few cycles, step two is complete, but has consumed 15-30 mins of their 2+ hour window. Step Three is even more difficult for them as athough they failed to peruse the "Features Board" on the way in or pick up the menu in front of them, they will continue to chat while the server is presenting the features. If they do read the menu, they make assumptions and fail to ask questions about specifics that might be important to them. (More on this later!) Next on the agenda, Step Four: It begins with presumptive anger about having to wait too long for their food: Wait, Wait, Wait they say. Many blame servers (who, for those who may be ignorant to the process, are not actually 'preparing' the dishes, but 'serving' them.) On extremely busy evenings this will be an issue, but most owners, chefs and teams are aware of the anticipated number of diners and prepare accordingly. Of course, in today's narcissistic "Me, Me, Me" world, these persnickety CompDins always want to modify their meal, which as you can imagine, complicates the entire kitchen process and ultimately creates delays affecting other diners as well. These CompDins have no respect for the usually hot plates being brought out by multiple servers, all required to be properly placed around the table. This insensitive & incognizant group usually still has their bread/app plates, utensils or drinks occupying the spaces needed for entreés and are too 'busy' to show any respect by moving them back to their proper positions. I now realize that Step Five is just well rehearsed preparatory action(s) utilized effectively in the past to get something removed from their bill or the "insanely proud" practice of being a consistent complainer that believes this to be one more way to get attention. CompDins will either say the meal is not what they ordered (because it is not what they envisioned, even though they didn't listen as the features were being offered, or did not read the full menu description or the 'professionals' will consume almost everything on the plate and then complain that it was not prepared properly (as they ask for it to be removed from the bill AND whatever is left to be boxed up so they can take it home to their "Pet"!) Step Six: The "I'm so disappointed look", always coupled with "I want something for nothing or I will never come back" exercise they have practiced over & over. A free dessert or round of drinks usually satisfies this 'demand' because they 'feel' the restaurant is making money hand over fist, when in reality, it is one of the toughest businesses to operate profitably and successfully over the long run. Step Seven is the final favorite: It starts with the bill presentation, then they ask for it to be separated by individual (even in groups beyond 6-8.) This of course is possible, but is much more efficient if requested initially. Added time involved when they rudely wait until the end steals time from every other patron's experience. In reviews where meals are excellent, CompDins simply complain about the server's actions, attire, condition of the restaurant, the noise level (especially on busy nights, although it is probably not the staff conversing at elevated levels?), lighting - too bright/too dim, the music - selection or too soft/too loud or how the takeout/take home was boxed or bagged. We are all human and for the most part, are doing our best to serve our fellow Americans. Finally, Step Eight: They call back to get a discount or gift card because they're too embarrassed when face to face! Instead of dwelling on everything that does not go perfectly . . . Remember, we are not feeding, we are dining, and they should appreciate and enjoy a wonderful experience at an excellent restaurant. These CompDins apparently have sad & miserable lives! read more

I wanted to love this place, but for my first time I wasn't impressed. I dined her with my bae for Valentine's Day dinner. They had a serious amount of specials last Sunday, but only three seemed interesting enough to try. Therefore, we ordered the shrimp and grilled Atlantic salmon. The shrimp and grits sounded amazing, but it was already almost 9pm and I didn't want to eat that heavy at night. Nevertheless, we may return to split that meal. Nevertheless, when our waitress Meredith finished the list and took our order, she began to let me know what toppings were on the salmon. I'm thinking, oh no, I don't need any toppings. She mentioned some mushrooms and tomatoes, I was immediately turned off. Well I guess I'm not one to rate this restaurant because some things I just don't like and even at the sound of some things I will not even try it. As a result, I asked for the salmon blackened instead of grilled. Meredith went to check to see if my request would be honored and yup...no worries!!! Thank you!! Now the sides, squash and red potatoes. But it wasn't just squash cut up into pieces or a medley of veggies. I had Meredith explain the squash dish to me at least two times. I still didn't get it, but she rest assured it was more like a dessert and that it is delicious. I thought to myself...I don't know. The sides were already paired with the featured dishes that night. I wasn't feeling to excited about my meal, but I remained neutral. The table next to us a lady also cosigned on the squash...but I still remained straight faced...like I don't know! I ordered a cocktail and when it arrived to the table I let it sit for about three minutes. I took one sip...tasty!! Began chatting with my bae and before I took another sip, I noticed my glass was rusted on one side - eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!! I showed Meredith and she took the drink away without hesitation. She brought my drink back within a minute, so I assume the bartender just pour my previous drink into another glass. I checked into the restaurant via Yelp and noticed there was a check-in offer to receive a free Caesar salad (not valid on Friday and Saturday) - oh what joy!! I told Meredith about it and clearly she knew what I was referring to, she didn't even look at the phone to verify, she said ok...and wahla!!! So the salad...I had the dressing and cheese on the side. This way I could control how much I wanted on my salad. Sometimes restaurants will drown salads in dressings and cheese, but nope...not mine!! Well I did try the salad, but I don't know, I didn't like it at all. I don't know if it was the dressing, the lettuce, I just don't know, but even though it was free, I couldn't bare to take more than three bites. I passed it on to bae to see if his pallet would allow him to finish it for me. I don't like wasting food. He took three bites as well, but he didn't care for it either. But I did notice a couple next to us, they both had the same salad and ate it all without hesitation. Nevertheless, the appetizer of the shrimp and bread arrived. This dish looked marvelous!!! And tasted even better!!! Now the flavoring here...suuuuuuperb!!! I was wondering when my entree would arrive, but I learned Meredith was waiting for us to clear our plates before bringing it out. But I told her, oh no, I'm ready now :) Now my main course...the salmon was so delish!!!! The red potatoes nothing not to like there - cooked to perfection. But this squash thingy...oh that was just too much. Meredith said it would be sweet, but sweet and buttery to the max. OMG that had to be at least 300 calories alone. Yes, it was a good size piece of squash, but the butter just sitting inside and I think sugar and/or cinnamon was mixed in at the bottom...omg!! I just couldn't. I tried it. Yes, it's good, but that was definitely more of a dessert than a side dish. Now if bae would have shared it with me I may have eaten more, but i don't know. I definitely wasn't checking for all that. I'm still lol about it, that was crazy!! But my salmon and potatoes, crushed them!!!! I had about three or four pieces of salmon, nice sizes too. Overall, the ambiance is intimate. There is a full bar and bar top seating is available. We sat on a long cushioned bench/table top (on the other side). The restaurant wasn't filled to capacity Sunday night around 9pm. The restaurant closes at 11pm so other parties may have dined earlier. Parking wasn't an issue and the restaurant offers complimentary valet parking. The restaurant was easy to find as well. I didn't check out the restrooms, but as far as I could see, the waitresses and hostess seemed to be on point and attentive to all guests. I wouldn't count this place out, but IMO it's not going to be my go to place next time. Glad I could experience Coastal Grill!! And Meredith was super fantastic!!! Have fun :) read more

Would you like to dine away from the tourists? We love Coastal Grill, off the beaten path, wonderful seafood and other delights. I come for the light, flash fried soft shell crabs. Just right. My wife had the Bronzino whole fish, marinaded red onions, scallions, lemon and lime slices, and baked acorn squash, melts in your mouth delicious. Service was excellent. Such a special experience dining here. We celebrated my father's birthday here and my goodness- it was wonderful. I was nervous because it seemed pricey and we had never been there before, but it was so worth it. The restaurant is romantic and quiet but packed with very happy customers. Friday dinner. I'm actually surprised that this place was packed not knowing this is going to be the last night service as they were moving across the street. To be honest, I am a bit confused of the concept of restaurant as it were advertised as seafood chain surprisingly it has a few varieties of dishes. Don't get me wrong, I had a wonderful dining experience as seems everything on point. Just like others stated in there reviewed the steamed mussels are perfectly cooked and taste divine. It's exactly how my mum cooked however, my friend didn't like it much. I had a fried oyster as my main course and it was ok. Not so great but average. There was a quite distinct taste of the oyster. There's just better places to have a fine dinner out. Strict menu with lack of any entreé side pairings. just a sopping wet squash with brown butter served identically with every dish. The word to describe this place would be "divine." It's very expensive/fancy so I only come on special occasions. But when I do, I've never been disappointed. Pretty much off the bat, I'm pretty sure you have to use the valet. So that's nice, but an extra 5 bucks or so for the guys tip. The food is absolutely wonderful and they grow their own veggies in a personal garden which I personally love. I've gotten their squash as a side and it's very tasty. The ambiance is very fancy. Everybody, even the valet drivers, have the most upmost professionalism. I'm not sure if there's any dress code but you'd feel out of place in a bathing suit and flops forsure. Not at all what we expected. We were the only ones in the entire Restaurant at 5:00pm for our open table reservation and were only offered a half table. When we asked for other seating by the window we were taken to another half table slammed against the wall, the three hostess were of no help. As all this was going on we noticed another couple was seated at a four top by the window. So in the End we left without eating. The scallops were lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. Very tender and juicy! The squash was cooked to a tender and sweet consistency! The potatoes were browned lightly and seasoned well. For an appetizer we tried the Old Bay shrimp, they were tender and juicy and buttery! The only complaint I have is with the white linen napkins, it left a lot of lint on my dark pants! I was so pleased I asked for the menu. The bartender then proceeded to tell me about their popular special Sea Bass so I took a gamble (I love Sea Bass) and I was not disappointed. Have crazy loved this local's restaurant since it was across the street in it's original location and they had hard boiled eggs out at the bar. Just do yourself a favor and order the Wilted Bibb Lettuce Salad. I literally want to lick the plate every time. I've had all their salads, love them. The Spinach with chicken livers, delicious. The Black Bean soup is always amazing as well. And I always just order the Chef's Special. Regardless of what it is. Don't even bother to tell me. Just ring it up.
