Came here today to celebrate an early Valentine's Day with the wife and they did not disappoint. The service was awesome and the drinks phenomenal! Pineapple tamarind marg and the coconut marg 10/10. Ordered half dozen oysters and guac to start. Also , they give complimentary chips and salsa but they could do better because it tasted store bought (pace picante) in our opinion. I usually avoid giving bad reviews but this one was actually quite a bad choice for a dinner! We went around 5:30 to get a sunset dinner and not at all. Happy about the choice there. The appetizer and drinks came really quickly so we were hoping service would be good, but our actual main course took more than 1 hour to come out to the table! We kept calling the server and asking about an update and they came and said it would take 6 minutes which turned into more than 20 minutes extra! Really not sure what was going on there because other people seem to have food on their table while we were just sitting there for quite a long time. At the end of the service day wanted to give us a little bit of a better experience and offered us of red dessert. We asked what would be the quickest and if they said it would be the translators cake which is also supposed to be good. Asked for it and it actually was not good at all. The berries and the cake did not go well together; berries were actually quite tart and overall would not have paid for this dessert either way. They also brought me the wrong order. I asked for the Macho Salad with dressing on the side but they ended up putting all of the dressing into the salad. I did not eat any of those greens in there because it was too much of the oily dressing on everything. I asked them for a bowl of plain mixed greens so at least I could take some of the other toppings that were there on the salad and have them with the plain greens. But even those plain greens took a good 10 minutes to come to the table and I was just sitting there while everyone else on the table ate their food. Shrimp Aguachile - Really good amount of shrimp in there, and this came out really quick to the table. Only one downside is that it was actually very very spicy! Needed a lot of water and chips to go with this to tone it down. Otherwise I got menu item that's quite refreshing and low in calories. Macho Salad - Quite a big portion size on this so that's nice. I was expecting this to be a little bit of a healthy it option but it looked like the beets and peppers and everything were all cooked in oil so this was quite a high fat menu item. Also, like I mentioned before they put in all the dressing inside as well which was very hard to work around. Griddled Pasture Raised Chicken - Quite a large portion size of chicken here so appreciate that. The rice on the side was very flavorful and the chicken also had nice seasoning. There were some portions of rest that were quite thick which ended up being a little dry on the inside from what others had to say on the table. Broccolini was also quite fibrous so a lot of it was not edible. Rice that came on the side was a big hit! Went to Coasterra on 4th of July and it was beyond amazing. Went in there expecting a 10 and it was a 20. Food was excellent, ambiance/energy was incredible, and the fireworks were breathtaking. Service was particularly great and communicated well. They let us know that they were slammed and would take longer than usual. If you need a great place to spend any holiday, I can't recommend Coasterra enough. They just know how to do holidays right! We discover a gem. Our server Case is a 10 star server in a 5 star rating system. The atmosphere was all of the 5 stars. The table side guacamole was all five stars. The main courses we ordered we not what our taste buds were looking for. The flan ( Yes, the flan ) was the best flan I have ever consumed. The Chicken Caesar salad was dry as a bone. Did they forget the dressing? Had to ask for "more" dressing, and such a tiny portion for that price. I guess someone needs to pay their rent. The carnitas tacos were also very dry. Had to douse them in Salsa to make them palatable at all. Attended a corporate holiday party at Coasterra and was blown away by the view and event space! Beautiful location on Harbor Island the event space includes a walk across a dock by all the yachts and has an unobstructed view of the San Diego skyline. The event space had both indoor and outdoor seating with heaters which was perfect. The food was tasty and all the dishes were clearly labeled with allergens including gluten free and vegetarian. We had a taco bar and the carnitas were so tender. The staff was incredibly friendly and we had a great time chatting with the bartenders. Highly recommend this space for events! ~Food/Drinks~ Ceviche Clasico: Came out in less than 5 minutes! When I saw that it was fish ceviche, I got really excited but was a little disappointed to find that the fish was cooked. I've had it once with raw fish (not poke) and have always preferred fish ceviche like that since. I also didn't realize how heavy the tomato flavor would be and wish it was just a lighter flavor, like with just lime juice and salt. Caesar Salad: Also came out in less than 5 minutes. Not much to say but I liked that they added toasted pepitas (pumpkin seeds). Crispy Calamari: Very crispy and comes with lot with a generous amount of chipotle aioli. The batter is similar to what you'd find with onion rings. If you're sensitive to spicy, be careful of the deep fried jalapeños mixed in. Prime 32 Oz Bone In Ribeye: Entree for 2 and it comes with papas bravas and charred broccolini. The papas bravas are just potato wedges with a sauce I'd expect to find on elotes. Very salty too. The broccolini had a charred/grilled flavor and was well seasoned. The ribeye was tender at the ends but the middle was a little tougher. It wasn't flavored much so I felt the need to use the chimichurri sauce. Tempura Mahi Tacos: Comes with 2 tacos and rice and beans. Mahi tacos are definitely not my preference. I think a different fish like cod would've been better. Mahi meat is a lot tougher compared to cod, which has this moist flakiness to it. Mexican Street Corn: We also ordered an additional side of the Mexican street corn. It doesn't really taste like elotes but it wasn't too bad. The corn was pretty mushy though. Buttercake: At first, we didn't think the pineapple & dark rum compote would be good but I'm so glad that we didn't adjust it. It pairs so deliciously well with the cake. You would think with everything combined that it would be too sweet but I found it to be just right. Such a perfect ending to the meal! ~Service~ We had a great server who regularly checked in on us and offered us some good food recommendations. Since we ordered a lot of food, our server had the appetizers come out as they were ready and the entrees at the same time. I'm pretty sure he was aware of how fast we ate because the entrees came out as soon as we finished the apps. Make sure you specify for the house purified water if you don't want to pay for the bottle! ~Atmosphere~ Set along the water, you get some impressive views if you're sitting in the covered patio but otherwise, it's a regular restaurant. If you come early, take some time to walk around outside and enjoy the San Diego skyline. There's also a nice waiting area in the front around a giant fireplace. Although not required, I'd recommend dressing a little nicer so you don't stick out so much. Most people aren't wearing formal clothes but I also didn't see anyone in flip flops or athletic wear. ~Logistics~ We made a reservation to guarantee a spot but it looks like you can have some luck with walk-ins. We saw a couple of parties requesting a table and they were either offered a short wait time or a spot along the bar. There's a ton of parking here too. Don't get alarmed when you first see the valet sign. It's $11 but it's actually not required. The workers will direct you a couple of rows down for free parking. ~Conclusion~ Although many say Coasterra is a tourist trap, I actually enjoyed the meal. It's affordable as a fancier restaurant and the quality is pretty decent. If you want to celebrate an occasion without breaking the bank, then I'd recommend giving Coasterra a try. read more

Parking: Large parking lot that is shared with one of the nearby restaurants. They also have valet parking available. Environment: We choose this place because they are located near the water and they have a great view of the city skyline; you can also catch the sunset. They have fire pits out front to keep you warm too. We were seated in the patio area which had heaters overhead (could be turned on if we needed them). They also have TVs playing the game. Restrooms are located towards the kitchen area, down the hallway. Staff members were friendly and very accommodating when we asked to have the bill split between the guys and the girls. For the service, the only complaint I have was that the waiter was very straightforward and there really wasn't an introduction but he was very tentative and kept us informed on when our food was coming out. As far as the food goes, it wasn't anything amazing. Maybe it was because of what we ordered but we weren't crazy about it but when you're seated, chips and salsa are served. We first started off with the Macho Salad which was very good and refreshing and you can really smell the smoked onions vinaigrette. We ordered 2 entrees. The first was the Ancho Chili Roasted Salmon and as great as the plate looked, it wasn't anything amazing. The glaze on top of the salmon wasn't very flavorful and the green beans were still undercooked. The only thing good about it was the toasted quinoa. The second entree was the Tampiquena. I was hoping there would be more of the salsa on the steak but it was so little. The steak was cooked great but the grilled panela was so flat and the rice and beans were ok. Once seated, a friendly waitress took my order professionally and efficiently. She was warm and welcoming throughout my dining experience even to the very end trying to tempt me with dessert. I decided to avoid the dessert temptation and just stick with lunch which consisted of Tempura Mahi Tacos, rice, and beans. I was happily given my food quickly and yes hot. The ambiance was modern, pleasant, and lovely. The view was stunning of downtown San Diego, and the San Diego Bay even though the weather was chilly and a little windy. Coasterra is an excellent venue to hold special events due to its prime bay front location and views, which include the downtown San Diego skyline and Coronado Bridge. They also have a large floating covered space that is the only thing between you and the water on the downtown side. Wow, just wow! Had an incredible experience at Coasterra thanks to Chelsea, one of the managers. The system was down upon arrival and she made us feel welcomed and she was attentive as we waited for our table to be ready. She asked about any allergies and shared the recommendations for the night. She was so attentive and helpful, really appreciated her service. She let me know I could substitute chicken for the shrimp enchiladas which I did, and they were amazing! The chicken was so flavorful and tender; it paired really well with the enchiladas sauce. The Waygu burger was also delicious, very flavorful. The salsa was also incredible, such good flavor there. For dessert, we got the butter cake. While it was delicious, it was a little dense but paired with the cinnamon on ice cream, it was good. The views are very pretty, I really enjoyed seeing the lights shine from downtown from the restaurant. The only con is the parking as there is a small lot and can be tricky. Wowow, we made reservations on OpenTable and it's so popular! We ended up making reservations a day ahead and got an 11:30am booking. We made a reservation stating that we were dining for a special occasion, however, there was no acknowledgment of our reservation note.
