Ask your server to remove the 5% supplemental fee. Coasterra automatically adds this to the bill for employees health insurance, however, they do not provide the employees with health insurance. If you pay this you are giving the property a 5% tip for existing. It does NOT go to the employees. This is one of the main reasons for the lower score. Beautiful view of the harbor and downtown. Free and valet parking available, free parking is available non peak hours (Sun-Thur I believe). Restaurant is clean and has an open concept interior design to maximizing the view. Dishes were hit and miss, the salmon was too fishy smell and taste. Better quality was expected from fine dining on the water. The Tampiquena was cooked well but really lacked flavor, this dish relied heavily on the drizzle of sauce over the top. The surf/turf fajitas were flavored well and portion was good size. Enchiladas were good flavor and solid portion. The Cazuela (pork) was probably the best flavored dish and the pork melted in my mouth. The wagyu burger was average, overpriced but due to the location no one was surprised. Our group ordered several Alcohol beverages, coconut margarita was the crowd favorite. Old Fashioned was a disappointment, for $27/ea we expected them to come out Smokey and have a better pour. By the time the drink arrived to our table and the server removed the lid zero smoke billowed out which was lack luster. Pours are measured, smaller highball glasses may give the illusion of better value. All wines/prosecco's were as expected. The drink menu is larger than the food menu, ensuring something for everyone. Our server was polite, professional and did not make any mistakes. I noticed that he has several large parties and handled everything well. Thank you Travis. Although the property appears to be ADA compliant, I think that anyone in a wheelchair would have a very difficult time washing their hands in the women's restroom. The sinks are very wide and difficult to reach the water spout. Coasterra has dishes on their website that are not on the menu. One example is the scallops, Coasterra needs to update the website to temper disappointment when guests arrive. Overall, nice experience one time, mainly for the view and the service.
This location is definitely an upscale Mexican vibe, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. For apps, we shared the calamari and Tempura Jalapeno-Cilantro cauliflower. I loved the cauliflower app. It was well seasoned, and had a good crunch to it. Calamari was good as well. But I highly recommend cauliflower app over calamari. For main course, I got the tempura Mahi Tacos. They were very filling and had a very subtle spicy kick in the tacos. Overall, the food was good for upscale Mexican-esque food. Service was excellent as well. Our waters never ran empty and after apps, they gave us new napkins to set our forks and knives down while they took our small plates away. They even offered to give us a new set of forks and knives. I think it is small details like this that make a difference. The most prominent detail I really liked about this location was the ocean view. We made a reservation for outdoor seating, and had an amazing view of the ocean and sunset. Parking was a little difficult. There's only one row for free self parking, but it is very limited. They offer $10 valet which I had to do because I could not find any parking. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. Because this restaurant is a more high-end / upscale restaurant, I would recommend this location more for a special occasion or date night rather than a casual place to eat.
Great place to take people from out of town. Love the view, love the happy hour, and love their coconut margarita! Their customer service is great as well. The food is a bit underwhelming for the price.
My new favorite spot in San Diego! I had no idea Reuben E. Lee was gone and this beautiful venue replaced it! I am so glad! This visit we stuck to the Happy Hour menu for food, but the main menu looked so tasty! The margarita very strong and had too much ice, but the wine was tasty! The chips, salsa and guacamole were wonderful and the guacamole was a hearty portion - well worth the cost. The ceviche was just okay, it was packed with what should have been delicious ingredients and in the end it was pretty tasteless. The service was A+ and the view, well there are no words.
The ambiance is welcoming. Music playing in the background. You have two options stand in bar area or sit with a view. We opted for a view by the beach. We definitely splurged. As it was our first time here and we thought the food portions would be small. Wrong. You definitely get your money's worth so be mindful when ordering. Capechana- decent - could be a shared appetizer if you want sea food. Agua Aguachiles- decent - could also be shared as an appetizer. To close it off we had steak and lobster. (Totally shareable) - more on the pricer side. But definitely worth it. Service was greag. Our waiter check in on us a few times but it didnt feel as if he was all over when we felt rushed so this was a plus. We were here for about two hours talking and enjoying the view. Food, views, vibes & service were all 10/10. I came on a Tuesday night at 7pm to celebrate my husband's birthday. It was pretty already, but we had a reservation. We got seated quickly and got lucky with a side table and perfect view of the city. We saw it during sunset and at night with all the lights. They give you chips and salsa to start and we got the spicy margarita and strawberry margarita both were tasty and easy to drink. We opted to get the paella for 2 which takes a little extra time to prepare but was well worth the wait. It was so flavorful with all the seafood being a nice touch of salt. It was a little spicy but the cream sauce balanced it well. The rice was fluffy but crispy on the bottom. It could've fed 4 people probably. We got a complimentary slice of strawberry tres leches and it was the perfect ending to our meal. So incredibly light and not too sweet. Our server, Abdo made our dining experience even better with his friendliness and attention to the fact that we were celebrating something. All the staff we interacted with were pleasant and attentive. I'll definitely be back to try other things on their menu and would highly recommend!
An Unforgettable Birthday Celebration! I took my husband here for his birthday this past Monday, and the entire experience was absolutely incredible from start to finish. First, the location and the views are simply stunning. It set the perfect backdrop for a celebratory evening. But what really elevated the vibe was the music! The playlist was so on point that I literally found myself dancing in my seat to every single song. It created such a fun, lively energy. I also have to give a massive shoutout to our waiter, who was incredibly attentive, warm, and anticipated our every need. The entire staff went above and beyond to make my husband feel so wonderfully celebrated. From a sweet little "Happy Birthday" sign to a surprise dessert at the end of the meal, every detail was thoughtful and perfectly executed. This place is truly incredible. We will absolutely be back!
I am a huge fan of all of the Cohn restaurants. Coasterra is one of the only ones in San Diego that I had never experienced until now. So I was very excited to see what this place had to offer. Celebrated my daughter's 19th birthday here this week, and to be honest, I was not impressed. The location and views from this place are unmatched. Tons of covered patio seating with a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline. As for the food, it was just ok. It was mostly mexican seafood, but there was a good mix of other items like steak and a wagu burger. Everything was served hot and fresh, but in my honest opinion, everything just lacked flavor. Everything I tasted was just bland, and I tasted a little bit of all of my family's meals. But everyone agreed. Maybe we are just spoiled with San Diego Mexican food. My biggest complaint of the night was the service. Our waiter started off well. He took our drink orders and when he returned, asked if we wanted to get appetizers started, which we did. Our appetizers came out and were finished and we still had not seen our server to order our main dinner. This continued to be the issue all night, we were constantly looking and waiting for our server. There were other servers that came around and filled our drinks and took our plates, and they were great! But we really didn't see our main server most of the night. And one of the times that we did walk by, my daughter asked for a new glass of water because she had dropped food into the glass. He took the glass and never came back. I ended up giving my daughter my water. I did notice that the servers at the other tables were awesome. They were attentive, and we constantly saw them checking on their guest. And like I said, we are fans of all of the Cohn restaurants we have dined at before, so the level of service we received is not typical. Maybe our server was new??? I will say, this is not a cheap place to eat. My family of 5 spent almost $240 and that was with no alcohol or desserts. So you would expect to receive a high level of service. Other than the ambience, our experience was just ok. I would highly recommend the restaurants next door, which are owned by the same owner, and have never disappointed us in quality and/or service (Island Prime or C-Level).
So the second time around, I would have to say this was a much better experience. I did go during lunch and not dinner. Our server David was super attentive and welcoming. He kept checking in on our food and we did hit a hiccup which was we put in the order for the kids first, but it didn't come till much after our adult entrées came so again I would say the consistency still need some growth but overall it was much better than my last time. You can see the picture where our food wise and we waited for about 12 minutes until the kids food came. I will give the extra Star because of David and the service that he provided checking in on us refilling our water. He was very attentive and very kind This time we did try some new dishes like the mahi tacos, which were good, but the fish was a little tough. The trout plate which was cooked actually very well and my kids both got hamburgers. Again, beautiful scenery and the food was overall good for some reason we had a hiccup again. Nothing can be perfect but again I will say that service was great. The view was amazing as usual and glad to revisit.
We are total creatures of habit and always end up at C Level for lunch whenever we're in San Diego, but we've been eyeing Coasterra next door for a while now. Decided to finally mix things up this time, and it did not disappoint! It's definitely an upscale Mexican spot, but the main draw right off the bat is the location. We got hooked up with a waterfront table, and the views of downtown SD and the Coronado Bridge are unreal. Here's what we ordered: Queso Fundido: Started with this and it was delicious. Famous Fajitas (Shrimp & Steak): Hands down the highlight. The meat was super well-seasoned and the charred veggies added so much flavor. Tampiqueña: Really solid and flavorful. Note on the chips: The chips here are a little different than what you usually get at a typical neighborhood Mexican joint--a bit thicker/different texture--but still tasty! All in all, everything was fabulous. If you're stuck in a routine of only going to C Level, definitely give Coasterra a try! We're super glad we finally did.
Delicious food, great view, and wonderful hospitality! On our last evening in San Diego, we went to Coasterra to wrap up our vacation there. This restaurant came highly recommended by major Visit San Diego websites, and we felt we should give it a try. Located right next to the water, the restaurant offers expansive view of the harbor and the San Diego skyline. Sitting is about 50/50 indoor vs. outdoor, and we chose the indoor sitting as it tended to get colder in the evening. Parking is available out front, but we took Lyft there. We came in around Happy Hour, and we were able to score two appetizers for $11 each. We got fried calamari and fish cervice as appetizers. For entree, we had the fish tacos and scallops. Both of the appetizers were excellent, and the cervice was so light and flavorful. My husband loved his scallop entree, and the taste and presentation were original and outstanding. My fish taco was enjoyable as well. For dessert, we had fresh churro that was paired with ice cream, which was excellent as well. Our meal came to $143 with taxes, which was a very good value with the quality and services offered. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, which made us felt right at home. As for the ambiance, it felt modern and relaxed. There were diverse customers from locals, tourists, and business people. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience and we will return.
Made reservations on open table but the space is so big there were still lots of vacancies when we went for a Saturday lunch. Ordered the crispy calamari, ceviche trio, and ahi tuna tostada. Enjoyed the different flavors of ceviche and was a fan of the super crispiness of calamari. My fav was the ahi tuna tostada. Super dressed up and had a good mix of crunchy, tart, salty, and mildly spicy. The restaurant has a great view of the ocean especially if you sit outside. Our waiter was very friendly and our food came out in a timely manner.
The food was good and for the setting (both the establishment and the city) was not overpriced. Our server was friendly and took good care fo us. We likely will not be going back simply because the place was just too loud. My wife and I spent the evening shouting back and forth to each other other. It's quite large, the music is loud, and they don't do anything to dampen the sound. Their giant patio was hosting someone's business event as well as some family affairs, which meant we had a bunch of toddlers (one of whom was in only a diaper) running around on the other side of the glass. That's fine, families have to go out too it's just not what we expected from this particular place when we made the reservation. Since I have it, I'll include a photo of the tortilla soup, which was quite good.

This place seems to have mixed reviews from friends and social media. I came here for a happy hour and enjoyed the food. Maybe their happy hour food is a hit or they had a better day? The ceviche was fresh and tasty and had a nice citrus taste to it. The potato flautas were flavorful and had a nice crunch to them. The guacamole had all of the yummy ingredients that are needed to make it flavorful and they did it! The sangria and coconut margarita were refreshing and delicious. Beautiful view and presentation of the food, but unfortunately not worth the high price. I ordered a medium-rare Wagyu burger, but it came out well-done. One side was completely charred, which I didn't notice until I'd already eaten about a third of it trying to make my money's worth. Thankfully, our server was kind and took it off the bill. Also worth noting: the restaurant automatically adds a 5% surcharge to cover rising costs, but this doesn't go to the servers. You can ask to have it removed. read more

The view is unbeatable. The ambiance was chill and so was the service. Our waiter was patient with our party of 8 & was very accomodating since we sat outside while it was windy. He had to mess with the heater a couple of times to get it just right for us. Appreciate that! The menu for Coasterra was great, lots of choices, mostly Seafood Mexi-Cali fusion entrees. The drink menu was extensive, but not overwhelming. I ordered the surf and turf fajitas which came w/a sizzling plate of steak & very flavorful shrimp, onions, bell peppers and rice. Also came with 2 warm, flour tortillas. The dish was fantastic! Tried their Tres Leches cake and that also was very good. The start of the show had t be the churros because they came out so cute. Not the long churros you know and love. I'd call these "short and stout" churros, but tasted great nonetheless. Coasterra is worth the price tag. The view alone is already worth it! Parking was plentiful on a weekday afternoon. I think Valet starts after 5pm and on weekends. Make a rez if you can, this place gets filled up any time of day. read more

We celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary at Coasterra and we were so taken back by the amazing service, food, and the view! It was such a treat to have the staff acknowledge our anniversary with a cute printed table sign and they went out of their way to sit us at a beautiful table along the waterside to take in the city skyline view. The margaritas were incredible! I ordered the Tampiquena which was cooked to perfection and the presentation was beautiful. My husband ordered the yummy tempura fish tacos. For dessert we had to try the butter cake and the waiter brought us a carrot cake as well to recognize our anniversary. Last minute dinner date with hubby. It was Mother's day weekend and the wait wasn't bad. It was about 30 minutes but a table at the bar became available about 10 minutes after I checked in. We got water,.chips and salsa right away. Then we ordered drinks. Waiter was Rich I believe. We ordered dinner and received quickly. My husband enjoyed his meal(Tampiquena). They have the best happy hour. Can't beat the views of the ocean and city, tasty bites that are very filling, and refreshing cocktails made to perfection. The only thing that would make this better is if happy hour was extended. They have lots of seating, but the best would be on the side right by the water. There's ample self parking also. Don't miss out on their butter cake with pineapples! It's not too sweet, and just the right amount of fluffy. All of their happy hour food is great, as you'll see in my pictures, but my all time favorite happy hour dish is their ceviche. read more

This is my favorite place to have lunch with my closest friend. I love the food, the ambiance and the servers are pretty awesome too. Until today! I did not read the entirety of the receipt until I got home a few hours after. There was a charge of 5% SUPPLEMENTAL FEE. What was that about?! And why were we not told about that fee when the bill was handed over to us? A courtesy mention by the servers would have been nice but nooooo. Was the strategy to hope the customer doesn't see it and don't ask about it? This restaurant is a bit pricey and that is fine because we pay for the experience, the ambiance and I get it! But a 5% fee is not acceptable! We customers do not complaint when restaurants up their menu prices - that's their right because it's a business and they should be compensated correctly. But it is not right to put a fee and charge the paying customers TO HELP OFFSET RISING COSTS. 5% may seem not much but (1) that cost should not be put on the customer (2) if you want to charge that to the customer, you should disclose it openly otherwise you're doing some SHADY business here. I looked at my other receipts from different bars and restaurants that I have been just yesterday and none of them had that fee. So why is that so, Coasterra?! read more

Went here for my boyfriend's birthday celebration. We had a table next to the water which was great, until a private party had people lining up along the railing which blocked our view :( The food was good but the drinks were weak. I got the coconut margarita which was super yummy but sweet. My boyfriend got the espresso martini. We each had a few drinks and agreed there was hardly any alcohol in them. Our waitress also wasn't great. It seemed like she was always in a rush and was very short with us. She hardly swung by the table and we had to wave her down for the check... Overall, the location and view was nice but I wouldn't come back again due to the service and drinks. The food was tasty but not memorable. read more

Went here on a Friday night with a reservation, from the moment walking in the door to walking out the workers were all kind and diligent. The server that I had I believe his name was Enrique, he went above and beyond to make sure dinner was perfect. The view itself was absolutely gorgeous and man oh man the enchiladas! Outside a green cream sauce and inside filled with shrimp and scallops! I can't wait to go back for more, probably the best enchiladas I've tasted in a long time! Definitely worth a try ! read more

Coasterra is located on the water and the views are magnificent! It was pretty busy for lunch on a Friday. The parking situation is not the best since the parking lot is shared with C Level. We made a reservation the day of and were accommodated with a beautiful view. Our server, Melida, was helpful and personable. We ordered the queso fundido, aguachiles, carne asada nachos, quesabirria tacos, and wagyu poblano burger. The best dish was the aguachiles and queso fundido. They had good flavor. The rest of the food was okay. The nachos got soggy fast and didn't have much cheese. The quesabirria tacos were dry. The burger was overcooked and a bit burned. Overall, you are paying for the view and the good service. The food was okay and I would prefer to just grab a drink and enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa. read more

Coasterra on Harbor Island has some of the best views of the bay and Downtown San Diego. It is one of the big reasons you would dine at Coasterra. Coming here for a birthday celebration, our party of 10 was seated promptly on the outdoor covered patio. You know it's a good sign when the first item they bring out is warm crispy tortilla chips and salsa. These are dangerous as before you know it you've just plowed through one basket and the server comes and reloads your basket. For cocktail, I went with one of their popular drinks called "Deb's Coconut Margarita" consisting of reposado tequila, coconut cream, lime juice, and coconut salt rim. This drink is on the sweeter side and almost tasted like a pina colada. For my main I went with the Australian Skirt Steak cooked medium rare. It was juicy and cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed my steak and would order this again. Others in the party ordered the carne asada served on a large block where one can assemble their meal. Also the table ordered the Mexican Paella filled with shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, mexican chorizo, bomba rice, saffron lobster broth and smoked chipotle aioli. A filling yet satisfying entree. Great location and really you do come here to soak in the views of San Diego. The food was great but it felt a little on the higher price range for modern mexican food. Service was excellent as they have huge staff on hand to get you whatever you need. Parking is great as they have a large lot with valet parking. read more

I was looking for a special place to have a family dinner for my parent's anniversary and I wanted a great view and good food. I called to make a reservation and explained what I was looking for. The woman who answered was immediately so helpful! I was so relieved to get all the help I needed to make it a special event. She said they have a great table with a beautiful view and it would be warm under the heaters. She even said we could decorate the table, which was a nice touch. When we were seated, the waiters were so nice and friendly. The food and drinks were delicious. I recommend the mezcal negroni. But the view was the star! The portions are not shareable and it's a little pricey, but you expect that these days and the view made it worth it for a special night. It's family friendly but also quiet enough for a romantic dinner. I would definitely go back for another special evening. read more

This was our first time Coasterra as we were in town for an event. Service is top notch from the moment you walk in. Make sure to made a reservation and you won't need to wait. You must try the coconut margarita! It's so delicious and smooth. It's cheaper to get a pitcher of it if you're in a large group. Portions are just right. We had the fish ceviche, tempura cauliflower with jalapeños, calamari and queso fondido, mahi fish tacos and a butter cake. The queso fondido was so good as they have it layer with pinto beans and jalapeños. Next time I'd like to try the shrimp aguachiles. The views are amazing! It is best to make a reservation to specifically request a table with the bay view directly at the water's edge. Otherwise, it is "first come- first served" and you are rolling the dice. Keep in mind that those tables are in high demand so a…
What is the dress code?
It's a relaxing environment. You can wear shorts or jeans. It's San Diego upscale casual. People go there to have amazing food and a relaxing time with a beautiful view - especially at night. You would feel comfortable dressed well too.

Yes. But it's difficult to get them day-of. Very popular very worth it.

Yes family friendly. I took my kiddos a couple of weeks ago and they had a kid menu.
How is parking?
There's a parking lot just for restaurant where you can park and walk-in. No charge. Super easy and definitely worth it! The food good not exceptional. But ambiance is amazing!
