Awful. What a joke. I can't believe a restaurant can put out food this bad, especially one as seemingly "upscale" as Coasterra. If you just want the view, I get it, but don't say you weren't warned. Visited with my daughter for our last night in town. Coasterra looked really nice and had pretty good reviews. Not sure what those people were reviewing, but my experience was dramatically different. In short, the place and view are indeed beautiful, but the service is mediocre, and the food is completely tasteless. We started with the queso fundido. I've had lots of queso like this, and usually the cheese is the star of the show, with chorizo, etc. providing some nice flavor. The Coasterra version had so much stuff it was completely overwhelming. Plus the chorizo seemed a little off. Not good. The queso, however, was nothing compared to the disappointment of our entrees. My daughter and I both got the carne asada. I have never had a steak so devoid of flavor. In fact, nothing on the plate had any flavor. It was so underwhelming that both of us left a substantial amount untouched, which almost never happens. We did try dessert. My daughter had the churros, which she said we're just OK. I had the chocolate peanut butter mousse bar. The puffed quinoa was completely offputting, and the rest of the dessert was pretty bland. Just about like everything else. Service was average. I did not get the sense that our server cared very much, and she was frequently hard to find didn't give this place any kind of boost. Came here for a birthday lunch, the views are spectacular, the service is great! My dad had the burger which seriously looks like a picture of art when it came out, very impressive, he loved it. My brother had the chicken enchiladas and I had the ranchero enchiladas, we both liked, a little spicy but they offer to bring more sour cream if to spicy, very nice touch. Amazing. Everything!! We had reservations on a Thursday night. It seemed busy, so I'd definitely recommend making them. From the second you walk in it's a vibe with the raddest view of downtown San Diego. Chips and salsa were great! I ordered the trout and it was possibly the best trout I've ever had!! Genuinely surprised that the food was pretty good because you don't always get ambiance AND good food. We each got their tacos, which I recommend going for their battered or fried fish/shrimp. Just not the regular beef or chicken, as this place has better seafood. The service is incredible & it comes with unlimited chips & salsa for the table -- which means you will not leave with an empty stomach! Amazing view and ambiance. Open seating concept that lets you really enjoy the water. I got the salmon and it was just ok. The quinoa really threw me off. Stunning views of San Diego. We came at night during Comic Con week and were lucky enough to see fireworks from our table. Everything was served and prepared to perfection. The ceviche was phenomenal. The queso was flavorful and creamy, served with warm tortillas. The best of all was the Paella. Wow. The best Parlla I've ever had the pleasure of consuming. It was always good before, but we really feel that they've amped up their menu and food as of recently and we absolutely looooved our most recent visit. Both appetizers we got, chorizo mussels and clams and the cheese dip, were delicious. Our waitress was really nice, the views are always of course a huuuuge plus and what brings people in. Father's Day was gloomy at Coasterra but it still provided a great view of the water! I originally booked a reservation beginning of June because I knew it was going to be busy. I did prefer outside seating, however, we were seated indoors. I didn't mind too much since it was cold, but they did not honor seating preferences. Ceviche Trio (2/5): I've had a better fair of ceviche and this trio was not worth it. I wanted my family to try multiple things but this wasn't our favorite. Crispy Masa Calamari (4/5): This was a nice appetizer and the batter is crispy! I liked the chipotle aioli they smothered on the plate. White Corn & Poblano Soup (4/5): This was a nice sweet flavor without it being too overwhelming with corn. It was a thick consistency and tasted like a cheddar soup. Prime 32oz Ribeye (5/5): This was the best entree that was fulfilling in flavor and portion size. This could have easily almost fed 3-4 people, but is listed as an entree for two. For accompaniments the mushrooms, green beans, and patatas bravas were all delicious choices! Other items ordered were the Crispy Carnitas En Adobo Tomatillo and Chargrilled Carne Asada. The carnitas is a very small portion so just be wary. We had a wonderful server! He ensured us of how long it will be since we did order steaks and dishes that need more time. Entrees took ~35 min and we did get too full off of chips and salsa by the time. I'm not too keen on coming back for the food, however, it was a great space for the views and to celebrate holidays. My rating overall would be about a 3.5 stars for Coasterra. read more

I also enjoyed my mocktail and the chips and salsa and guacamole were all good. Beyond that though, it was a little disappointing. The fajitas were a very small portion and kind of greasy which is odd for fajitas. Someone also got the queso and it was like one big wad of partly melted cheese so the party didn't really eat it because you basically had to make a quesadilla to eat it. My son and daughter-in-law took us to Coasterra during a recent trip to San Diego. We were very impressed. The view from the dining patio looking at downtown San Diego across the bay was awesome. And on our visit a full moon crept up from behind the skyline for an absolute breathtaking view. Every table got up to take pics. NOTE: We did as well but our photography skills are lacking. Dinner was just as outstanding as the view. We were immediately served chips and salsa. The salsa was tasty but a bit too watery. I prefer a chunkier salsa. The guacamole appetizer was excellent with just the right amount of heat. For entrees I opted for the Enchiladas Suizas (scallops, shrimp, queso fresco, poblanos, onions, tomatillo & lime crema) served with rice and refried beans. It was excellent, extremely tasty with plenty of small shrimp and scallops. My wife was a bit adventurous and ordered their Jalapeno-Corn Lasagna, not to be confused with the lasagna found at every Italian restaurant. It is made up of monterey jack, roasted poblanos, caramelized onions, spinach, arugula, heirloom tomatoes, shaved fennel, and an elote cream. She loved it. Others in the party raved over their meals Service was spot on. Our server was able to answer any and all menu questions. He was as attentive as you would want. Right over the water with a nice view of downtown San Diego. If you're dining solo, the bar looks very inviting. We were given a nice big round table on the deck to the left. It would've been nice if we were a little more front and center, but this would do. Our server was great! Attentive but not intrusive and very respectful of our group because it gave us all a chance to catch up. Everyone ordered something different, and they all looked very happy. The presentations were beautiful! I had the scallops, and for the price point, I thought I'd get at lease four and some type of starch. The description sounded promising, but it looked like three scallops and four pieces of thick cut bacon on top of a mixed green salad. But it was all delicious...I just think it's a reflection of the times we're living. We did get a "pitcher" of margaritas which were very good, and the chips and salsa were good too. This is a lovely little gem tucked into the east end of Harbor Island Dr. We went here for drinks after walking the trail on Harbor Island Dr,on a hot afternoon. The ambiance was lovely. The beer was delicious, and the server was engaging. We went back for an evening snack and enjoyed a seat looking at the naval base across the harbor (husband was stationed there back in the day). He was really connecting with all of the guests. Case was so knowledgeable about your wine selections. Everything was presented with such finesse, we wished we could have stayed to try it all. The Corn and Poblano Soup recommendation was spot on! Piping hot, creamy and tantalizing to the taste buds. It was visually stunning as well, with the colorful swirls of oils circling the floating crispy leeks. Everything was splendid! Totally pleased with this experience at your restaurant. Evening Dinner with my family to celebrate my wife's (Baby Mammas) birthday. Noticed nice firepits prior to entering the restaurant. They stood out with fashion. Checked in. We were all greeted and seated for a party of 7. The location they seated us was nice! We can see the entire city of San Diego.  City lights with the nighttime sky reflecting on the waterfront. Ordered our drinks and appetizers.  Received all within 15 minutes.  Ordered tableside Guacamole as well.  The young man by the name of Thor prepared our Table side Guacamole. Made it perfect to the T! He was chopping up conversations with all of us in a friendly matter which made our dining experience pleasant.   The other hand our Waiter by the name of Josh did a decent job but lacked more customer service authenticity.  Not sure if that was his certain demeanor of character, he was a little bit on the abrasive side when serving us.  It was not Genuine service, but forced. Example of his character is hurry up, hurry up and order now! That is what we all felt.  Overall, that did not stop us from having fun.   "Maybe Josh is not aware of his tone and needs to be addressed through this Yelp review."
