When I mentioned in another review that Coava was worth coming back to, I meant it literally--but I didn't expect to stumble upon a second location, next day, by accident (took a wrong turn as a visitor) and ended up finding it! Ha-ha! This Coava Coffee location just a few blocks away, and this one have a roaster machine on site. It added a whole new level to the atmosphere--great to see where the beans are actually roasted. Pretty cool. This location is a bit off the beaten path (with a homeless encampment down the block) in an industrial area, so it's quieter and not as lively. After seeing the flagship site, this location feels a bit different. Luckily, still same solid coffee and friendly staff, but with a behind-the-scenes vibe and smaller cozier sitting area inside and outside. read more

Such a great, great coffee shop! I was introduced by the shop by Around Portland Tours yesterday morning as we walked over to the shop before heading out for a day of biking the Columbia River Gorge! I ordered the Rose Latte and was delighted by the espresso and overall flavors. I could have spent quite a bit of time at Coava as there is such a great atmosphere, spacious, chill vibes, clean, loved everything about it. The boyfriend and I were in Portland on a mini-vacation and came across Coava's Public Brew Bar & Roasters during our Third Wave Coffee Tour. We learned a lot about their roasting process, from bean to bag. It was pleasing to hear that Coava is committed to long term, sustainable partnerships with coffee producers and in turn, they work directly with coffee farmers. The interesting part was finding out that Coava will still purchase from the farmer even if the farmer has had a bad harvest. This ensures that the coffee farmers always provide the best quality single-origin coffee, regardless of the difficult times they may face. I believe the person giving us a tour mentioned paying more than $3 for a pound of coffee while the standard for single-origin coffee is at about $1.50 per pound. During this tour, we had the Robinson Figueroa, one of Coava's Nitro Cold Brew from Colombia with hints of almond brittle and apple. This was probably one of the best nitro cold brews we've had! We also had the Kilenzo, an Ethiopian coffee that is rich and fruity with hints of lavender and grape jam. The front entrance of Coava opens into a public brew bar, a small cafe where you'll enjoy watching a coffee roastery in motion. We got a tour of the roasting facility and a description of their roasting machines. Apparently, the owner, Matt, is a genius and is both the engineer and designer of these machines. He constructed a density grader machine that separates the heaviest beans from the lighter beans. The denser the coffee bean, the higher the quality. With dry milling, a density separation process is already completed to ensure quality but Coava runs the separation process twice, and in doing so, they separate out the best beans to roast and ensure they sell the highest quality bag around! One of the machines is also able to capture any foreign objects that are found during the roasting process. For instance, we took a picture of rocks found amidst the coffee beans! TIP: This location offers complimentary public coffee cuppings at 1:00pm PST daily. I believe they are closed on Sundays. read more

Came here for a quick bite to eat and latte before heading to the bus station to leave town. I ordered an oat milk latte and an everything bagel croissant that hit the spot. Despite the coffee being smaller than I normally order, the quality made it equally as satisfying and the croissant was perfectly flaky. I fell in love with Coava the moment we walked in. A coffee shop that roasts its own beans AND does coffee tastings! yes, please. My family and I ordered americanos, vanilla and honey lattes, and flavored teas. The espresso they used was so smooth and creamy that I enjoyed my sister's Americano which I typically hate. I watched the barista melt the honey before he added it to my latte to make his own version of coffee syrup. absolutely everything we tried was so good. This location is located on the street corner and closes early in the afternoon at 2pm during the week. We came here on a Tuesday, our last day while touring the city of Portland. Our Airbnb host raved about Coava Coffee, and I noticed that many restaurants we were dining at served their coffee as well, so I wanted to make sure we made a stop in. At 1pm, this location does free cuppings. I had never been to a cupping before but have been wanting to, so thought this was a good opportunity. Since it was middle of the week, it was just me, my husband, and one other customer. Our barista, Joy, spent nearly an hour with our group. We smelled dry coffee grounds, wet coffee grounds, smelled the aroma as we broke the crust, and then tasted the coffee at different temperatures. Afterwards, we discussed the smells, tastes, and mouthfeel and learned how to identify and differentiate between different coffee beans. It was super educational and informative, and helped both my husband and I appreciate coffee even more. If you attend the cupping, you receive 10% off beans and merchandise. I had already bought coffee at their other location but ended up buying one more bag of one of the coffees we tasted. This location only serves pourover and iced coffee. This place is awfully impressive with its industralial sizes roasting equipment. And I am always happy to see coffee that is roast dated. In this case, I was able to buy coffee that was roasted just the day before. Packing was nice and there was a good variety of beans available. So what's not to like? Well, for one thing Coava sells a 8.9 ounce bag of coffee, not a 12 oz like many competitors. The price is $14-15. So that makes for $26 bucks a lb. that's just too much. More importantly, after drinking on this bag for a few days, it's not very good. You May pick a variety you like more, but my bag of Guatemalan just did not hit the spot. read more

I've always been a fan of Coava and their naturally processed Ethiopian coffee. In fact, it may be one of my favorite beans, ever. Berry bomb to the max. This Public Brew Bar is not a full cafe. In fact, this is their headquarters where they do all of the roasting and packaging. They have a mini cafe that does pourovers, but no espresso-based drinks. I got to do the cupping here, which they do on a daily basis at a specific time of day if there's enough interest, and it was awesome. Being able to cup different types of beans, washed vs natural, etc, was great, and our host provided us with lots of education around the coffee industry. Lost my job as a coffee roaster due to the Rona! Had to start actually buying coffee in town! So many trips to so many different shops! That being said, nobody else in Portland can match the excellence in putting great coffee in every bag of every variety they offer. I've run through every single offering except the S.o. Blend and decaf, and all have been profiled and roasted to their potential in my opinion! Prices are great for the offering and packaging! The relationship they have with the farm in Honduras is really cool and I wish they'd make actual trading cards for all their producers! Great Job Coava!!! Best in PDX! Stopped by with two friends at 1:14pm for their cupping, but apparently, they cancel the event if no one else shows up by 1:10. Which was... disappointing but then the really nice cashier(?) gave me a free drink because we missed it. The coffee is very expressive due to the care it gets. I checked their website and can be as sure as Wikipedia can be on other topics that their coffee was meticulously sourced. I drank a cold-brewed Ethiopian coffee (Kilenso) [edit, was cut off] and took home coffee from Columbia (Edilson Gomez). The tag says "density separation", and oh my goodness, every bean is exactly the same. They all have a even color, have the same weight, have no deformities. Though I bought a Columbian coffee, which usually has just a "coffee" flavor, when brewed, it brought up a sweet fruity flavor as well. High-quality beans, but not my personal ideal beans. They need to stock something from Kenya. read more

My friends and I went to Coava earlier today to participate in their coffee cupping class which was free and very educational. The class was led by Joy who was wonderful and very knowledgeable about every coffee we tasted and the process of both cupping and coffee making. She was extremely friendly and made our experience very enjoyable, even offering to send a follow up email with additional information. We tasted a large variety of coffees from across the world, all of which were delicious and unique. The facility was very impressive and it was really cool to see the actual equipment Coava uses to roast their coffee. You want a taste of Portlandia, here ya go. I stopped by as I was nearby, I just wanted a small latte. It's a huge room, shares another business in the back, lots of space, with minimal seating.... but tables you can't use? It's weird. So it's a coffee shop without flavors, oh but they have honey sweetener! My small latte with honey sweetener was almost $6. The word I use to describe this place is Pretentious. You want your business to make money, you'll need to cater to more than your hipster buddies. read more

Whenever my out of town friends visit, I take them to all of my favorite restaurants and coffee shops. I especially like supporting our locally owned, homegrown Portland coffee shops like Coava. If you're looking for the best Portland coffee, Coava Coffee Roasters will be on the top of the list. You can actually watch them roast coffee here at their Portland coffee roaster headquarters, just down the street from their original cafe on Grand. This place reminds me of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, with all of the coffee equipment machinery out in the open to see. You can observe how they lovingly handcraft their coffees, taking it from the green coffee beans, through the roasting process, and into your cup (pour-over, of course). Craft coffee fans will love it. read more

Probably the best tasting drip coffee I've had in Portland. Accidentally ended up at this location instead of the other one where I was looking to go sit in and do work. This location is definitely not the scene for that as there isn't much sitting area and they close at 2, but if you're looking for a REALLY good coffee to-go with very friendly service, this is definitely the spot. read more
