Really fun stop for coffee in downtown Portland. We came on a sunny Saturday morning and loved our visit and the coffee. It's a minimalist vibe in the shop, clean and focused on the coffee roasting and prep. The barista was kind and you could tell cared about making great coffee, ours were delicious. When I was pointed in the direction of this shop while searching the net, "coffee lab" was a phrase I saw more than once, and this is definitely it. There's a small Mill City roaster in the corner, clearly a currently in service piece of gear, as well as a couple of single group GS3s and, to my delight, a Decent Espresso DE1XL machine paired with a DF83 single dose grinder. Some retail gear and bags of roasted coffee were nearby, but the rest of the decor is what I'd call "form over function", to say the least. It was a one man show, and he was deftly serving drinks to a small but steady stream of customers. I ordered a straight espresso, my usual, and it was a nice, comfortable blend, low acidity and big on body. My wife enjoyed a well made latte and a my son in law had a honeysuckle latte that had an unexpected but nice ginger punch to it. We also got to watch the barista prepare an iced matcha, complete with bamboo brush and metal bowl. It was cool to watch his work. Overall, this is a place where you go to get good coffee and maybe check out the geeky gear; it's not big on fluff, pretty artwork, that kind of stuff. But especially if you're a coffee geek like me, it's a must-visit in Portland. read more

So I went here after seeing great reviews on Yelp and Google! I am not going to lie, I was a little underwhelmed when I went inside as it was a very small and simple shop but it did not disappoint. I ordered a Portland Fog which has rose and cardamom and got it dirty with a shot of espresso. It ended up being my favorite drink of the trip! It was sooooooo good! My hubby got the chai latte and actually finished his whole drink, which is rare for him! We both agreed it was our favorite as far as flavor went! The place looks dead to be honest. There was one gentleman working the counter so the drinks came out one at a time, so be prepared to wait if there's a line. There is limited seating and has a hole in the wall vibe rather than a coffee shop vibe. Minimal for sure and the place didn't look the cleanest. I come for the vibe as it's cute and cozy nestled under shade cover of the Park Blocks. The offerings resemble many others near PSU: meh food and drink at high prices. There's only one standout and it's located in the Oregonian building. The sauce on the toasted breakfast sandwich was tasty, but otherwise a boring concoction. This place is an amazing hidden gem!! They are a small batch coffee roaster and truly seem to put so much passion and care into each roast. The price is a little high but very worth it for how delicious and unique the coffee is and how complex the flavor profiles are. They do have non coffee drinks as well and flavored lattes etc. The service is always friendly but can be a little slow on a busy weekend since they are so small and usually just 1 person taking orders and making drinks. There are a few tables but not a lot in terms of ambiance. But definitely a fun place to grab a drink and a bag of coffee for later! read more

My kid and I were in the mood for a coffee after visiting the Portland Art Museum down the street, so we checked online and this little coffee shop was just a block away - so off we went! Super Joy is a small corner shop that has a real homey, boho feel. There's a sandwich board outside on the sidewalk, and the interior reminded me of little coffee or tea shops back in the 70's and early 80's: cozy, not pretentious, with usually wonderful drinks and pastries. The back wall of this shop has a huge mural of a dragon on it, and there's a bench that runs the length of the wall, with individual seating cushions on it. I also liked how they had a side dresser that had board games on it, for customers to play. (This was also reminiscent of casual coffee shops in the 70's). Now, to the coffees here..... OMG so so so good. I ordered an Earl Grey latte and, no exaggeration, I think it was the best I have ever had. My kid ordered a complicated coffee drink with a lot of exotic flavorings and milk or foams (I forget the specifics), and she said it was divine. We also ordered a pesto popover to share. The counter guy forgot about this pastry so it was late in coming to us, but when it did, it was SOOOOOOOO good: warm and flaky and buttery and so wonderfully flavorful. One of the best matcha lattes I've ever had, including the ones I've had in Japan. Matcha was hand mixed with water at exactly the right temperature. I ordered with honey because most matcha I've had in the US is made wrong and is bitter. Not so for this carefully crafted drink, in fact the natural delicate sweetness came through. One of my favorite coffee shops that I tried in Portland so far. Storefront is easy to miss if you're not paying attention, and the inside is a bit small with only a few seats. However, the coffee and hospitality was outstanding. I got a cappuccino for $4.50 (which is a little bit pricier than other coffee shops in the area), but it was one of the best cappuccinos I've had to date. Typically milk-based espresso drinks mask the espresso, so if the espresso isn't high quality, the milk can still hide the flavor. However, this cappuccino not only had the perfect milk texture, but it let the espresso flavor shine through and complemented the steamed milk well. The owner of the shop also explained how they roast their beans (it's pretty neat, especially since some of the roasting equipment is still there in their shop). The latte art was also some of the best I've seen from any coffee shop (it was only ruined by me placing a lid on the top before I could take a pic). Massive kudos to this shop and its owners. Got a Colombian sidra medium light roast pour over. It was very fragrant and floral and I'd recommend if you enjoy light roasts. What a delightful find. A simple little coffee spot with a master barista. This place is a little gem in kind of an out of out-of-the-way place (but not really). It's on the edge of downtown and Goose Hollow, just over the 405 freeway at the Yamhill bridge (Yamhill and SW 14th St.); and it seems to have parking. Can't say for sure as we walked the short block from our hotel. It's a simple shop with a Master Barista named Bradley. After just one visit, Bradley knew our drinks down to the last detail of the type of milk we liked. On our first visit, there were four of us, all who ordered something different. And all drinks were delicious. One friend most often drinks a mocha and has drunk them all over the world. He said that Bradley's was one of the best, if not the best, he's ever had. The next day, just my husband and I returned. Bradley knew our order without our needing to tell him. And this day it just only the two of us out of four from the previous day. On day three, I changed things up and ordered a Chai instead of my usual latte. And Bradley asked if I wanted almond milk in my Chai, like I have in my latte. How can someone remember such details in such a short time? Slightly hidden. We were staying at the Hotel DeLuxe during our stay in Portland and after yelping, I found this cute little coffee shop just down the street. I read the reviews and was disappointed that a robot did not make my espresso drink and my pastry was okay, a tad on the dry side. Although my drink was not made by a robot, it was still fantastic. Very smooth and easy to drink with the perfect kick of caffeine to get my day started. I only wish perhaps there was a little bit of a nicer atmosphere so that I could sit and enjoy the coffee there, but it's just two little red bistro table sets out front with very minimal decor. I ended up just bringing my coffee and pastry back to the hotel. I would definitely recommend this for an on the go drink! read more

Small and minimal. A regular came in during my second visit, and was recognized and greeted by the staff as you would expect. I asked what a piccolo was that they had on the brief menu, and was just told it was "like a cortado." That's my standby, so I got one. Good, but I found out later what the difference is, and I would have appreciated an effort to offer a clearer answer. No Wi-Fi, if you're into that sort of thing. It's always great to find new (to me) PDX coffeeshops and even better (as an Asian American myself) to find out they're Asian owned and operated! Superjoy has been top of my list to try for a while now. I've been able to try many of their roasts through their collaborations with a few other coffeeshops in the PDX area (i.e. Less and More and InJ) and it did NOT disappoint! Parking wasn't too hard to find (we were able to find street parking right across the street). We were warmly welcomed by the owner, Topher, when we entered the space. Although the space is currently a little bare-bones, the owner said they're getting ready to renovate it. Let's talk about the coffee...which is, of course, the most important criteria to rate any coffeeshop by. It was STELLAR. We got a drip and a Chinese Pepper Mocha. Both drinks were amazing! The drip coffee took me by surprise by how bright and berry-forward it was. Amazing quality for a coffee drink that frequently gets overlooked and subsequently, is sometimes questionable in quality. The mocha was the perfect blend of a back-of-palette warming spice and a touch of sweetness from the chocolate. The latte art was also impeccable. I'm really looking forward to going back to try their other offerings and chat with the incredibly knowledgeable and kind barista, Topher. His love for, and deep knowledge of coffee really shines through in the beautiful roasts that he's crafted and serves. read more

I purchased a to go Americano here a few days ago. I made it a few steps out of the shop when the lid popped off and gave me 2nd degree burns down my hands and forearms. I sought medical attention for the burns and was told this coffee was well over 200 degrees to cause the extent of my injuries. I reached out to Christopher, the owner, to inform him his machine temps might be off and that the drink was well over proper serving temps. I wanted to ensure no other customers get hurt, and I told Christopher I had no intention of getting him and his staff in trouble. Christopher feels his establishment does not hold any responsibility for the health and safety of his patrons. He placed full blame on me for holding a hot drink- in a to go container designed for walking with and transporting- and told me I shouldn't let hot liquid spill on me. He never apologized and wouldn't answer my calls when I was attempting to voice my concerns. Christopher's business approach feels negligent, inconsiderate, and apathetic. Place was also dirty and disheveled and, after all that, the coffee still wasn't even tasty. read more

They have a ROBOT to make your espresso drinks! I drink cold brew primarily but I will definitely be back to try a ROBOT coffee. The cold brew however, was FANTASTIC. Clean no "grit", and the taste was wonderful. A little more berry from the Ethiopian coffee bean than I'm used to but very tasty. Was talking with the person working who I assumed is the owner. He was very deliberate on his discussion of the cold brew blend of beans that he uses and roasts. Wish it was closer and more convenient to me, would be there regularly.
