Cobi's was such a fun place!! We went for lunch on a Sunday and made reservations but they weren't too busy. The place was gorgeous and had a really cute vibe. It was so well decorated and you can really tell they pay attention to detail in their food and ambiance. Food: we ordered the beef randang roti wraps (10/10), Cobi's fried chicken (9/10), and nasi goreng (7/10). The beef randang roti wraps were the star of the show for us! So tender, juicy, and flavorful, the roti was flaky and the beef was cooked so perfectly. All the flavors went so well together and it was a decent size. Cobi's fried chicken was recommended by our server as one of their best dishes and he wasn't wrong! The crunch was insane and it was soooo juicy and tender. It wasn't dry at all and had really good seasoning on top and throughout the chicken. The side sauce packed a punch and was a bit spicy but worked well! Nasi goreng: typical fried rice with a fried egg on top that was cooked perfectly. Nothing too stand out about this dish but was a standard fried rice that tasted exactly like it described! No complaints but no our favorite either. Overall, we'd definitely come back to try their dinner menu. Good to note that their dinner and lunch menus are different. Let's start with the j initial walking into the restaurant- the hostess- Angela- she was wonderful and very accommodating. She got us going and our server was Vanessa- she was outstanding.. she reviews the menu and gave recommendations based on our preferences and she was spot on! The cooking was superb. The restaurant itself was so cozy and you feel like you are right at home and everyone is part of the family. We had the curry puffs, Beef rendang w/ a side of jasmine rice, and the strawberry basil shaved ice. I have eaten at 1, 2, and 3 star restaurants and the food is on par with Michelin quality. I found out after eating that they are actually a Michelin bib gourmand restaurant and have been since 2023. Makes total sense. I went here with group of friends on a weekday evening. We made a reservation about 1 week beforehand. We were seated outside on the patio. We ordered the chicken larb, mister dal, butter chicken, branzino and nasi goreng to share, along with some roti. Food came out pretty quickly! Portions were a little on the smaller side for the price, but it filled our group (5 people) as some of our group don't eat very much. If big eaters, would recommend additional dishes. My favorite was the butter chicken, though the chicken, dal and nasi goreng were popular in our group. The larb was ok, but not a fan of the large and tough cabbage leaves that they were served with. Total ended up being ~$30 per person (~$150 total) including tax and tip. Parking is street parking only. First, how can you beat Santa Monica Pier as your backdrop? This place is located in an unassuming small, pink building near the beach. It doesn't open for dinner until 5:00 and you should probably make reservations!! We were quickly greeted and walked through a garden-like entrance and into the restaurant. This place smelled SOOO GOOD My co-worker ordered the African Curry w/ chicken which was bold and chock full of dense, beautiful flavors. We didn't know it was a different lunch and dinner menu but the food was still all really good- would recommend sharing everything. The portions are a bit smaller than we thought but that also means you can try more of the menu. First off this place looks like a secret garden. This was my second visit and the first time we ate inside and I am so glad we got to eat outside this time. Not to say the inside isn't a vibe as well. Service both visits was a 10 out of 10. The staff is incredibly friendly! Everything we ate was delicious. Perfection. It's dark, cozy and feels intimate bc of the candlelight. We came as a big group of 8 and we were recommended to do half the classics and half the chefs choice as that would get us the best of the menu and holy crap, the food did not stop coming. Every dish here is to die for, especially the butter chicken! It was a first for the majority of us but my friend lives in the neighborhood, had been before and recommended many times. Adelaide was wonderful and gave some solid recs and guidance for our group. This meal was phenomenal! We found Cobi's through LA Eater and had to check it out during our quick trip to Santa Monica. They feature southeast Asian food and seem to specialize in curry. We opted to do the chef's tasting menu for $68 per person, and we split a bottle of local Chardonnay. Some of our highlights from the menu included the curry puffs (think a fried samosa with hot curry sauce in the middle). We also loved the flavors in the green papaya salad. The curry (beef rendang) was my favorite dish. The roti was amazing! And the beef short rib was delectable. We said "no notes! This food is incredible!" The service was super nice and attentive. I would like to caveat that this review is not a 4 because of the expectations given the amount of hype this place gets. The food is good, don't get me wrong, but is it anything unique, special, or something I've never tasted before? No. It still felt safe and the portions are tiny. The African curry (8/10) was good but felt like it was missing something. LARB (5/10) wasn't spicy at all and I am sensitive to spice. It had a slight kick. It also has been done in this way, was served lukewarm, and came with a chunk of lettuce. NASI GORENG (8/10) this was good but small and nothing unique. Just a Thai fried rice. Curry puffs were the best with a flakey exterior but again nothing special in the flavors. Service was fine. They don't serve hard liquor but your cocktails with rice alcohol are still $18. Everything came out in a weird order too. I got the LARB first then the curry puffs and then the curry and nasi goreng came out. Just not a great dining experience. The food was so delicious! The ambiance and decor was super cute and romantic. I love the Asian fusion theme here and the menu has all my favourite Asian cuisines. The reservations are a little hard to book if it's last minute so I would recommend booking ahead of time. My favourite I would say was the oxtail curry. The oxtail was so soft and tender plus the curry was thick and full of yummy spices. The chicken curry was also amazing and spicy which I loved. The roti was nice and soft too. The papaya salad was nice and refreshing though the flavours were milder than what I normally get in Thai town. The Indonesian fried rice was another favourite and the crackers were nicely flavoured. One word, amazing!!!! I wasn't expecting to come here, but my sister-in-law planned a birthday party for my brother while we were visiting. They had a set menu for $85 per person and it was worth every single penny, kids not included. Every single dish was so flavorful and just enough food that we could not eat everything. The papaya salad was one of the best I've ever had, and I have had a couple in my life. Can't speak highly enough for this place, the ambience is awesome. Despite the rainy weather, I drove from OC to finally try Cobi's. Unfortunately, the experience began poorly the moment I arrived. A worker--clearly not the host--was fumbling with a parasol that nearly hit my head, yet he still found the energy to shout at me, "Go queue up behind the line!" When I let him know we had a reservation, he didn't even acknowledge us--just repeated, louder, "Go there, queue behind that line." I asked why we should be queuing behind guests without reservations, but all he did was mechanically repeat the same line. The interaction felt careless, unprofessional, and surprisingly hostile. It's baffling to treat paying customers with the tone of a worn-out '90s takeout cashier rather than the basic hospitality expected at a sit-down restaurant. Meanwhile, the actual host stood there with no expression whatsoever, offering zero guidance as we waited in the cold drizzle. When another staff member finally checked our reservation, the two of them exchanged a quick, sneaky smile right in front of me. Maybe it wasn't about us, but doing that in a customer's face is just unprofessional. Inside, the ambience is cozy in a kitschy-grandma-dining-room way, but the noise level is overwhelming. Conversations are nearly impossible. Ironically, the same guy who yelled at us was later the one taking our order. Thankfully, one server who looked more like a chef, wore an apron, and kindly explained each dish as he served it. Actual hospitality, which made the contrast even sharper. Unfortunately, the food didn't redeem anything. The menu bounces between Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, and Malay, but the flavors don't blend--they clash. It's not fusion; it's confusion. Everything feels like a mix of everything and yet somehow nothing, much like Père David's deer: part donkey, part cow, part deer, part horse--but ultimately none of them. --+Curry Puffs looked like fried chicken when they arrived--burnt, lumpy, and unrecognizable. The filling tasted fine but was watery. ---Beef Rendang was a $28 disappointment. Instead of tender beef, it arrived as a pulled-pork-like mush smeared across a tiny 5' plate in a dull light-brown color. The coconut sauce and a completely flavorless sambal ijo were served separately, turning the dish into a dip-your-own science experiment. The effect is a DIY experiment rather than a cohesive dish -- like selling a luxury watch with all its components loose in the box. The promised crispy shallots and gulai were nowhere to be found. Even worse, the sambal had no heat, and the beef itself was lukewarm. ---Devil Chicken Curry was just heat with no flavor--$21 for a bland chicken leg and thigh soaking in pepper oil. No aromatics, no depth, just pain. ---Nasi Goreng promised sambal terasi and long beans, but neither showed up. Instead, it tasted like sweet rice lightly tossed with ABC sauce. The egg was over-fried, the dish had zero spice, and instead of long beans, I found a medium-length hair with the bulb still attached. Absolutely gross. My stomach turned for the rest of the night, and I couldn't bring myself to finish the meal. This place feels like a pure tourist attraction--style over substance, and none of the substance works. The Michelin Guide listing reads more like a Yellow Pages entry in this case. The service is terrible, the hygiene is questionable, and the food makes no culinary sense. Even a few bites left me chugging water all night. I drove over an hour in the rain just to be shouted at at the front door and to find a hair in my Nasi Goreng. This was one of our favorite places of all time, our first very romantic date, and, sadly, we might never go again due to Michaud and "manager" Aaron, this evening. We wanted to sit close to each other and the teenagers that were seated next to us didn't seem to mind, though Michaud did. Maybe he liked the girl. I don't know. The security guard was absolutely lovely and in control and should he be the one managing this restaurant we would have had the lovely evening we were looking for. I have to preface this by saying it was incredibly busy and hectic as they were having a Resy event when we booked our reservation, but I was severely disappointed with the food. We started off pretty well with the curry puffs. They had a crispy, yet fluffy exterior and a nice soft filling reminiscent of a classic samosa. The tamarind ketchup was also a nice touch as well. The kanpachi was also alright despite the fish's slight chew. Unfortunately, the popular butter chicken was extremely flat - as if they forgot the masala entirely - and the nasi goreng required the sambal from our complimentary Resy 'snack' to exceed the standard of a typical takeout fried rice. I don't think this restaurant got it's excellent reputation from the food we tried today, so I'd love to try it again and get the experience I had hoped to get. The egg on top of rice has running yolk to provide a rich texture that covers the grain. Chicken is extra crispy outside but juicy inside.
