First and foremost, this place is great value for your money-- I thought that the portion size was enough for two people. The chicken had a nice sear on it and was well-seasoned. Came here because of the good reviews, but I guess the other reviewers were deluding themselves. We were excited because this place actually had boat noodles, which isn't very common in other westside Thai restaurants. We ordered the Thai fried rice, chicken wings, butterfly tea, and boat noodle soup bowl. My fried rice was decent; I liked the char of the chicken, but the portion was a bit small for the price. I saw another reviewer brag about their clean plate- honey, it ain't hard if the portions they're giving you are putting you on a diet! Idk about you, but I come to a restaurant HUNGRY. The butterfly tea was an interestingly purple drink, and you're supposed to pour lemon juice into it to make the drink change color. I poured half of the lemon juice, and the flavor was very pleasant! Very floral with a hint of sour from the lemon juice. But it didn't change color all too much, so I poured the rest of the lemon juice. That was my mistake- it made the drink way too sour and ruined the nice floral taste it once had. And the color change was not dramatic at all; it just got a little pink at the bottom. I would recommend not putting the entire lemon juice if you actually want to enjoy the flavor profiles of the tea. The bad experience though came with the boat noodles soup and wings that we ordered. First of all, these dishes took more than half an hour to come out of the kitchen, with no other parties in the restaurant (at least none still waiting for food). One of the chefs said it was because they were training a new chef in the kitchen, but quite frankly, I don't think training should get in the way of the quality of service. Aside from that, though, the wings were quite over-charred on the outside and did not have much meat on them. My fiance was extremely disappointed in the boat noodle soup- he ordered it with flat noodles (which was an extra $2 charge btw), and soup did not come with much noodles. In fact, the noodles appeared to be very short and cut as well. Not sure if they're cutting the noodles or if they're just overcooking the noodles to the point where it separates on contact, but it was not our preferred flat noodle experience. Plus, the soup was as mostly bean sprouts and not much of the liver nor meatballs. To top it all off, there was a large piece of plastic in our soup! Thank goodness they comped us for the soup, but overall I would not come back. You can find cheaper and more substantial options throughout west LA. read more

I placed an order through Uber eats for delivery since I'm working in the Los Angeles area. On Uber eats, they had a promotion for buy one get one free on four different items. I took advantage of the BOGO for Pad Thai with chicken and an order of the papaya salad. I also asked for utensils. Order arrived about an hour later. I noticed that there was no utensils. The papaya salad with like soup. There was so much of the fish salad dressing and so little of the papaya and ingredients. Very disappointing! The Pad Thai was good. Noodles are very thin and packed a lot of flavors. It's probably so much better if you eat it dine in or right away. I would come back and try the curry. This was one of those meals where every dish that hit the table was somehow better than the last. Seriously, everything was insanely good. I've been to Thailand a number of times and this is some of the most authentic Thai food I've had in LA. Wow, this place is a hidden gem (or maybe it's just too new to have gained enough hype yet) Visited late on a Saturday night, I'm personally frustrated by how early restaurants close even on weekends in LA and this spot happened to be open til midnight so we visited by chance. The owners are super nice and checked in regularly on us to make sure we enjoyed our meal, which wasn't an issue because the food was great. I'm not an expert in authentic Thai food but I do know when I taste authentic Asian food and the herbs and spices in these dishes can only come from authentic cooking without shortcuts, super flavorful and rich and if you love basil you'll love these dishes. Also I don't know where they get their shrimp from but I wish I could grab them for my own cooking, meatiest shrimp I've eaten. We had a great experience at this new-to-us Thai spot in West LA. Sanook means fun in Thai and it was fun to see this interesting menu. Being Thai I'm very picky about what passes as "authentic." This definitely passed the test. Excellent quality, maybe a little small portion wise but because of the authenticity of the flavors it was well worth it. We very much enjoyed the roti as a nice appetizer. One interesting dish that you won't find on American Thai menus is the Khanom Gene Nam Ya with crab (picture) that was sweet, sour and bitter as it's supposed to be. As a warning, You won't taste any dish like it so you might have to get used to it! I grew up with it so it was excellent to me. The Hormook baked salmon, an order ahead type of plate (that my mom used to make at home and I've never seen on a menu in Los Angeles?!) , however on the menu wasn't available but I was assured it would be in my future visit! There are two really excellent Thai Food options in this general area. It is Sanook and the other one is Tuk Tuk up on Sawtelle. The rest do in a pinch. If you're going to make the caloric expenditure to enjoy some proper Thai on this side of town (and north of the I-10), though, do it at one of those two. Notes: - Cleanliness is next to godliness. This place is clean. - Not your run-of-the-mill massive portion Thai place. A lot of fine details in execution and attention paid to ingredients. Even the basil in my boat noodle soup is flawless and not bruised. They pick the good stuff here. - In that vein, order a lot. Go family style and don't be afraid to try a lot of different stuff. - A lot of takeout happening here, and can't be mad at that! Really recommend eating in if you get a chance though. The smell in the place is so nice, and they use really beautiful plates and forks. As a dining experience, it's actually quite nice. - The spice level here is non-trivial. If you ask for spicy you will get real spicy, you have been warned. Standout dishes for me here: - Boat noodles. One of two renditions in the States that address the craving for me (the other is at Royal King Elephant in Garden Grove, California), and yes, for some reason I will have a very specific craving for boat noodles. I love that they let you sub in ba mee (egg noodles). Beware -- that broth is spicy. Even if you ask for it not spicy, there's only so far they can go before it compromises the integrity of the dish. - Sai krok isan (pork sausage). I love, love, LOVE the pork sausage here. It's got a little sour, the bit of char on the outside is what just takes it to another level. I prefer it to Tuk Tuk's even though this one comes pre sliced and Tuk Tuk keeps their links intact. With a little ginger, little red onion, we're in business. - Som Tum: one of the better papaya salads, though a little lengthy on the shred and unfortunately the plate doesn't let me pick it up in little heaps the way I might like. Tldr: best thai food on the west side; amazing chef/owners This place isn't just great Thai food, it's truly some of the best on the West Side, and for a very good reason. From the moment we walked in, we were completely blown away by the service and the incredible quality of the food. The owners are some of the most gracious and humble people we've ever met. They took the time to share insights into their recipes, which made the meal feel even more special. The dedication to their craft is clear in every dish. We were especially impressed when they toasted up fresh duck for our duck curry and duck noodles (both amazing) just an hour before closing, a level of accommodation you rarely see. The duck curry itself was a masterpiece, the use of grapes was brilliant, creating a perfect harmony of sweet and spicy flavors, all balanced beautifully by fresh basil. The food is phenomenal, the peanut sauce is arguably the best I've ever had. It was complex with a spicy kick and many different flavors, a far cry from the typical one-note, overly sweet versions. The Thai iced tea also stood out, it was served in a hefty mug and perfectly sweetened, not cloyingly so. The commitment to freshness is what makes this place truly special. I asked for mango sticky rice right at midnight, just as they were closing, and the chef didn't hesitate. Been coming here since they were a food truck, the rough days of their ghost kitchen, and am very happy to see they are now a restaurant. The roast duck noodle soup is pretty decent, the boat noodles are unexpectedly high quality for a place not in Thai Town -- to be clear this is not to slight Chef Donaldson's cooking, but just to show you how uncommon it is to find good boat noodles anywhere! Hearing that this was a food truck turned into a brick and mortar was really great to hear. We came for dinner on a weekday and parking was a mess. No parking before 7 on Pico, no parking on the side streets after 6 so for that one hour, you are pretty much out of luck other than parking pretty far. The food was overall pretty good. The Kao Soi was flavorful but it needed more noodles and definitely more soup. It became like a sauce rather than a soup that the noodles are sitting in. The Drunken Noodles were OK but it felt like it lacked that punch of flavor that we were all looking for. The Duck Noodle Soup was a bit too sweet for my taste. The Papaya Salad was the best thing we had. Crisp papaya with a dressing that was pretty strong. Finally the chicken wings were cooked well and full of meat but the chicken itself was pretty bland and it needed to be drenched in sauce to have any flavor. As you can see the food was fine and the service was also just fine. There was great intent but it feels like there needs to be more training of the staff. Just a lack of attention or too much attention and mixed organization among the tables. Luckily it wasn't an issue for us, but other tables who got there after us and take out orders waited a LONG time to get their food. We had eaten most of our food before other tables even for their appetizers so there some expediting that needs to be done imo. Everything here is absolutely delicious. All the flavors are so vibrant. They dance in your mouth and they make their way to your stomach where it warms your soul. The interior is clean and has a minimalist aesthetic which is great because it allows the food to star. Ive had the Duck Noodle, Braised Pork Soup, Massaman Curry, drunken Noodles, pineapple Fried Rice, Pad Se Eww, and the Papaya Salad. My favorites have been the Duck Noodle ,Braised Pork, Massamn Curry and the Drunken Noodle. The braised pork soup has such a deep flavorful broth. Theres so many layers as is covers your tongue with its silky smooth texture. Incredible umami flavor. Not to mention the pork ball, the different types of pork you get i the soup. Theres the fat cap which melts in your mouth like butter but has the consistency of jelly. The meatier heartier pieces of pork are nice and chewy providing a good texture. Theres rice noodles soak up the broth and are filling but light at the same time. Theres rice noodles drunken noodles are so good with stir fried peppers and fat flat noodles great after a night drinking. The massaman curry is nice and creamy with turmeric and nicely sized potatoes. I think of it as Thai comfort food. Come to Sanook Soi 38 you will not be disappointed. They are open until 12am so perfect for any late might food cravings. Im telling you man this is the type of meal you have and you think about days later like dang that was delicious. I've ordered the duck curry, khanom jeen nam ya, kao yum, tapioca pudding, and deep fried morning glory, and all were very delicious. If you can handle spice, ask for Thai spice -- they will do it for you and it's great. But Thai spice is real spice so just be forewarned if you've never had! We ordered food from here for the first time and even though we ordered things mild, it was SO spicy. Nose running, mouth burning, couldn't really eat it level of spicy. Even things you don't expect to be super spicy like the peanut and sweet and sour dipping sauces for the summer rolls were hotter than medium spice other places. The food looked and smelled great, the staff was friendly but our food was just too spicy. We couldn't even eat the fried rice or stir fry.
