I se a lot of negative reviews from people who don't understand how Mongolian bbqs work so here's som tips and tricks to help you through your experience. If you're dining in and plan on getting a bowl, (WHILE AT THE REGISTER), ask for gloves. After receiving gloves, sit down order beverages then go straight to the bar to create your meal. If they don't have what you want, just ask for them to get it, very simple. I know with the pandemic people have lost socialization skills so it's time to relearn. When you get to the sauces drown your food. If you think it's enough, it's not because in order to fully cook the meat and noodles they have to add water to steam the meat and boil the noodles and of course adding water dilutes the sauce by adding more sauce they don't to add as much water and the sauce infused with the food and cooks it making you plate more flavorful. Remember that you are the chef when eating here and it's your fault if the food isn't good, the guy at the bbq is just there to cook your food and make it edible. read more

Slowest service ever!! My wife and I got bbq while my daughter ordered sushi. It took 40 minutes to get the sushi. In the mean time drinks were not refilled and soup and rice came as my wife and I were finished with our meal. This was the case with every table in the restaurant. 0 stars! Worst experience ever! I took my husband tonight for his bday along with a group of friends. We were never offered refills for our drinks and i waited for napkins for 30 minutes. The BBQ wasn't bad but the sushi my cousin ordered was disgusting! It tasted like coleslaw. She politely let the waitress know she did not like the sushi and gave it back. The waitress told her to just keep it on the table and never said anything about it. So my cousin asks another waitress who says she will talk to the manager, she never comes back. So when we get the bill the sushi is still on the bill. The woman tells us that she can not take the item off the bill because she will lose money and someone has to pay for it. Though they took the sushi back she said we could take it home with us. We said we didn't want to take it home because we didn't like it. She continued to say that since we ordered it, whether we liked it or not we had to pay, even if we did not eat it. My husband who is a chef said that was not good customer service, we came with 9 people and enjoyed the rest of the food, and had brought in a lot of business. A waitress who was not involved stepped in and very rudely said if we didn't like it we shouldn't have ordered it as of we knew we would not like it. The woman even threatened to call the police when we were calm and respectful the entire time. Extremely unprofessional, from a sushi lover... disgusting sushi, horrible customer service. We took the grandson for his birthday dinner, his choice. Waitress took our order for soup and rice. So we waited for the soup and wonton chips...and waited. So went to get our food, started eating...guess what showed up. So my son ate a quarter of his bowl and he had a nice size bug in his food. Yuck....no more food for me. We tell the waitress and she talks to the owner. Comes back with 2 coupons for $1.00 off next lunch visit. REALLY...then takes his bowl, not before a picture of the bug, tells him to get another bowl. NOT....so we sat and owner never came over. Waitress brought our check and apologized. They did take off my son's food...lol. She collects the money and so over all the service was some of the worst we have had in awhile. Not going back that's for sure.... read more

Sushi was dried out and old. When we brought it to the attention of the waitress the response was you must have never eaten sushi before cuz albacore is like that. It didn't explain why the tuna, salmon and the rest was too. We've eaten there before and never had a problem. Not only did it taste bad but both my husband and I got sick from it. And we hardly ate any! Not even an apology from them, just excuses. It was even brought to the attention of the owner. This was my first time trying this place, and I was really impressed! The ladies who worked there were very friendly. I was given gloves to wear while making my Mongolian BBQ bowl. There was a huge selection of meat, veggies, toppings, and sauces. Everything looked fresh and the buffet bar was very clean. My boyfriend and I were really impressed with the amount and quality of food we got for the price. In all, we ordered a huge bowl of noodles that could have fed us both, a 20 piece mixed sushi platter, an order of tempera shrimp and vegetables, and miso soup. It also came with rice, cheese egg rolls, and fried wantons, and we ordered a beer while we waited. $50! Totally reasonable and worth it! To top it off, we decided to order our favorite green tea ice cream to-go last minute, and we got much larger containers than we were expecting. We are stuffed and still have leftovers. I was really excited to try this place out, and I really wanted to like it!! Honest. But after being seated, and having menus thrown down at our table without much of a greeting, or direction as to how the system works, doubts crept in. Our daughter wanted a simple california roll, and upon asking the server if we could order that (since it wasn't listed on the menu), she directs us to other rolls that had the foundation of a california roll, but was otherwise a totally different roll. We tried multiple times to explain to her that we just wanted a simple California roll, so she tells us, "Ok, $9.50." Seriously? Sushi is our favorite food, and we've eaten at countless restaurants. Our daughter always gets the California roll, but we have never paid that much for one. The server explained, "Because we use the high quality seafood." to that i asked, "oh, so it's real crab?" Her response? "No, it's imitation krab, but there's less flour in it." Oh... ok... real high quality. My husband opted for a toyota sushi roll, and my other daughter and I did the buffet for the mongolian food. The fresh ingredients were definitely a plus. I was still unsure of how the sauces worked. There was a list with two columns, listing mild sauces, and spicy sauces. Each with a number beside it. I wasn't sure if the numbers were based on a scale, or if they were indicating how many scoops we should put of each... But there's a guy working back there, and he was helpful. Sign clarity would've been nice. The cooks worked incredibly fast, and I found any lag in the line was mostly due to indecisive customers. We sat down to eat, but my husband and daughter waited 45-1 hour for their sushi. Might I remind you, one is a CALIFORNIA ROLL! (And the Toyota roll, was basically a California Roll with salmon, not cooked. And it wasn't a busy night.) We truly don't mind waiting for food, but awww, I felt so bad as one kid was watching the other one eat. And we weren't allowed to share, so it was like "yep. this is me, eating. you are hungry, too, but you need to wait for your high quality california roll that's taking an hour." When we inquired about it, our server told us, "oh, it's because they're making it with their hands." Seriously?????! Well DUH! Omo! She was making me so mad. It finally came, and it wasn't anything special--at all. Both sushi orders. I noticed the rice was really mashed up, too. So, if you're going, I'd recommend you go just for the grill, although, maybe just go for lunch, because how much all you can eat stir fry can you eat? But I would not go for the sushi--high prices for sushi that doesn't look or taste "high quality" is not ideal. And I wouldn't recommend it for someone who has allergies. The way they cook the stir fry is by rotating your bowl of ingredients all around the flat grill, and so other people's ingredients may wind up in your's. For instance, I found peanuts in mine, that I did not put in. So be careful! By the way, we were told our server was the owner. And she obviously is not trained to be a server. (Not very friendly, at all.) She (and the restaurant) was very disorganized. Try the place, if you must, but maybe wait a few months after they work out some kinks. read more

My wife and I work downtown, and go to Kahunas on occasion. We seldom want to go downtown after work since we live on the East side of town. We saw Co Co the other day and decided we wanted to check them out this weekend. We just got back from dinner there, and we were pleasantly surprised. The last time I had been there was when Lai Lai's was around. Talk about a complete remodel. Right away we were impressed with how bright and clean Co Co was, in contrast to the darker, bar atmosphere of Kahunas. We went in on a Saturday evening, so the restaurant was about 1/3rd to 1/2 full. We were seated within 30 seconds of entering the restaurant. The server was very pleasant and friendly. She asked if we had been there before, which we replied no. She explained the process for their BBQ and their sushi bar. I looked at the sushi menu while my wife went to start her BBQ bowl. When the server returned, I asked her a question regarding the sushi menu. She seemed a little unfamiliar with the choices, but took my question to the chefs and returned with an answer. After I ordered I followed my wife to make my own bowl. I will say, their bowls certainly feel larger than Kahunas. The selection looked fresh and there were many options. I will agree with most of the comments that the sauce selection is a little lacking, and the long ladles tend to bump the sneeze guard. I still had no trouble with spilling sauces, and I made a slight variation of their mild sauce recipe which tasted great. As for the cleanliness of the stations, there was a young man behind the counter refilling inventory and wiping stations constantly. I would say within 10 minutes of us walking into the restaurant, we were eating. I ordered sushi from the ala carte menu, and it cost us $10 for 8 rolls. When the sushi came out, I was surprised how large the rolls are. At the end of the meal I only managed to eat half my BBQ bowl and half of the sushi rolls. That doesn't even include the soup, rice or wontons that come with it. The whole meal came out to just under $40 plus tip. I could easily go to many restaurants in Redding and pay the same amount, and leave less full than I did tonight. If you enjoy Kahunas or Hulas in Chico, don't hesitate to stop by Co Co and give them a try. We will certainly be going back. read more

Kahuna's. GO TO KAHUNA'S! Hearing this place was coming and is so close to my work, I was more than excited to try it out. Figured it would be a regular lunch hour spot. Oh was I wrong. Terrible service, had to take my lunch to go, no one came to check on us but once. Had to ask for more utensils because there were none. Their noodles are not the big fat delicious kind (which is in my opinion the best part of a Mongolian stir fry) and their sauces are very limited. Their recipe for sauce I followed, and it was so so dry. Our entire party of 6 was disappointing. Maybe Kahuna's spoiled me with their menu of 10 different sauce combos, and much more of them to choose from, but Co Co doesn't even compare and I will choose to drive the extra 5 minutes for better food and service. read more

I've been here many times for lunch and dinner but today all my son wanted to eat was a bowl of rice. I was planning to give him my rice but was told by the waitress that if I let my son eat any of my rice she would charge me for a whole meal. Yep, a whole meal just for a bowl of rice. My son is little so its ridiculous to charge so much for a bowl of plain white rice that already comes with my meal. Allow me to preface this review with the fact that I am an enormous fan of Hula's in Chico. Used to live in Chico and went there several times a week. Every trip to Chico now includes a stop at Hula's to get my fix. Pros: Great selection of meats and vegies that are kept well stocked Good variety of sauces and dry seasonings Almost an exact duplicate of Hula's. Even down to the wording on the signage ("Fire oil. If you dare...") Cons: When busy, the staff is scatterbrained Sushi orders are so slow that you forget that you ordered it when it finally gets there Management sees fit to reprimand and argue with employees in front of customers The ingredients are fresh and the end product is what you make it. If it's not good, you goofed, not them. If you need to compare it to the other Mongolian BBQ in town, the biggest differences are layout and staff. Kahunas is just a bad design, period. Wrong location, wrong layout, and it's more of a bar atmosphere rather than a restaurant. And while the staff at CoCo is scatterbrained when it gets busy, the staff at Kahunas flat out doesn't care about the customers. I've been going to Hula's in Chico for 16 years and I can see that CoCo saw what works and copied it, word for word in some cases. No joke, their signage is word for word what Hula's has on their signage. That's not a bad thing for me though. Because of that, I no longer have to wait until I go to Chico to enjoy my favorite food. Overall it is a great experience but there were two incidents that were not so great. I went with some friends and we noticed that they had raw eggs that can be added to your bowl during cooking. Both of my friends added eggs to their tray before cooking. One of them had their egg added to their bowl and the other one sadly watched as the cook ignored the egg and cooked the bowl without it. Small oversight but odd that he just ignored it. The big issue was the choice of a manager deciding the register area was a good place to reprimand an employee and then get into an argument about who was at fault in front of customers. This is unacceptable. Personnel issues are handled in private, away from other employees and certainly away from customers. I love Mongolian BBQ and I am ecstatic to see a good example of it come to Redding but if I see that again I will go back to waiting for a trip to Chico to eat my favorite food. read more

I understand they're new but I don't see this place getting any better with time. The staff (besides a few) didn't seem to care enough to hustle. Our waitress was a bit older and just seemed "over it" and very impersonal, we waited a long time for our appetizer. They have a nice veggie selection. The grill was not hot enough and the cooks were really "casual" about getting people their food and going around the grill. The two people I was with said they will give it about a month and try it again but they live on this side of the river. I live on the other side of the river and will pay the extra money for a consistently good bowl of mongo. Been here 1 time. I don't think I'll come back. I might but I don't think I will. Let me start with how awesome the place looked. Definitely looked different than previous tenants. They made this place looked really nice for a restaurant. The sushi bar and the drinks bar made the place looks extravagant. Since there weren't many people in the restaurant we were told to sit wherever we wanted. We sat in one of the booths by the wall. I like their little samples or appetizer they give out for free. That was nice. The service was AWFUL. I'm sorry but just like the earlier reviews, we experienced a terrible waiter and were not attended well. We also noticed other people as well. They sit you down and give you your drinks and the complimentary snack then we weren't sure what to do or if we just walk up to the bar or if when should we order our sushi. If we wanted appetizers, we didn't know when to order because the waiter never came back. We had to get someone's attention to order some sushi and ask what should we be doing at this point (10-15 min of sitting). Our drinks was empty almost the whole entire time. Our sushi that we ordered right was brought to us at about 30 min and we were almost done with our noodles. The food selection was OK. The meat was great! There's no selection to add shrimp. I don't remember if there was bacon or lamb. I think it was only chicken and beef. The veggies were fresh! That's a plus. The cooks were great and looks like they are enjoying their jobs. The sauce area was an absolute mess. Just like the other reviews, the owners should probably rethink the sauce area again. You can't really mess up mongolian BBQ. If it doesn't taste good, then it's your fault that you probably didn't put A LOT of sauce. You should put at least 12 scoops of mixed sauce along with butter and garlic. It's cheaper than the other place in town. The sushi I had was good. I don't remember what it was. Salmon tasted fresh (as fresh as any sushi place in town could get). Excellent service especially for the lateness of our arrival to the restaurant last night. Server was very friendly and offered good suggestions as to what to ordered. I got the rock shrimp tempura came with miso soup, and a saracha mayo dip. The tempura was really nice and light with a good crunch. The shrimp was cleaned and succulent. This place was an unexpected surprise, it's as good as any Mongolian BBQ I've had in Taiwan or China (the owner's Taiwanese). There's a decent selection of thin-sliced meats (chicken, pork, beef, lamb...and turkey!) and the servers were constantly refilling the food station with fresh veggies. There's only one grill (with three cooks) but the waiting time wasn't too bad, even on a Sunday night. My only complaint is the sauce station kept getting messy but the servers periodically cleaned it up. Food tasted delicious off the grill. If they added a hotpot (火鍋) option in the winter (the food station would work perfectly for it), I would seriously come here every week...in any case, I have a feeling CoCo's is gonna be my go-to for fresh Asian food in town from now on. read more

Hubby & I had dinner last nite. First blush.. Big, clean, nice decor. Has been opened 3 week, so I ordered a Blue Moon beer... Uhh they were out.. Hmm, not good. Restaurant has Mongolian grill & sushi. Hubby ordered Mongolian grill, I ordered sushi. Husband's meal was just ok, lacked flavor but w/ another try w/ the sauces might b ok. My sushi was ok.. Presentation ok, nothing special & tasted average. Kinda felt like a he sushi chef was an amateur. Pictures on menu looked better.. Our waitress, Lena was nice & service was good. My main complaint was the price! 2 sushi rolls, 1 Mongolian bowl & 1 beer- $55 w/ tip! Bit much for Redding!! Will I go back? Not sure. Good luck Coco's read more

This is my default go-to place when I'm hungry. We always get the what I call "make-your-own bowl" buffet deal. I love that I know exactly what ingredients I put in my dish, what spices, and what oils. It's pretty much cooking my own dish less the work of prepping all the veggies and meat and cooking. The pictures are deceiving. It looks like a large buffet room when you go in. We had know idea what the buffet looking items were. We had gone there for Sushi. Once we saw what that the others people in the buffet line were taking the content to someone to grill it made sense. The Sushi was mediocre. It took forever and was warm and fishy smelling. Seriously amazing food great service! Sushi was on point it was so good! Our server made to sure to let us know about sauces and how you might need a little more than you would think to get a flavor and she was right it turned out great! and they offer egg to put on ur food! So many fresh veggies and jalapeños! I was in heaven it was amazing! Up there with hulas in Chico only difference would be noodles but still good at co cos! The shusi! I can't even explain how fresh it was and even as left overs it still tasted amazing and I don't eat left overs usually! Will definitely be coming back!
