What has happened to this place? Used to be one of our favorites but after the poor service tonight I doubt we'll return. Neglected to bring silverware and napkins; never came by to pick up empty serving dishes or otherwise check on us; **forgot** to bring out an entree - once reminded she re-heated (somewhat) the dish and delivered to our table very much too late. And with not a wisp of apology nor offer to make things up to us. My table wasn't singled out; even the diner behind me asked his waitress, "Are we invisible?" The wait staff was seldom seen in the dining area. No checking on diners. Nowhere to be seen. EXCEPT I saw four of them all huddled at the cashier stand, chatting it up. Mixed feelings: The 1st time I came here with my husband and friends, it was good food (Drunkard Noodles) and great fun. Waiter was OK nothing special but he didnt mess us either. The 2nd time I came here with just my husband, food was not good (Basil Chicken) and waitress forgot our drinks. My husband didnt love his meal either... Delicious Thai food in Burlingame. The service was very good and they also speak Thai. They have a full bar to the side, and I saw a lot of people grabbing drinks. They don't name their dishes in Thai here but pretty much have everything that you would want at a Thai restaurant. The green papaya salad was very good and so good that we ordered two!! It came with a lot of lettuce as well, which tasted so good after soaking up the fish sauce. I had the sweet basil chicken, which was sooo tasty. They also put mushrooms in it and didn't grind up the chicken too small. The pumpkin chicken was also very tasty. I definitely will eat here again if I am craving Thai. read more

Food (0.5 stars): I ordered my usual Pad Kee Mao (Drunkard Noodles on their menu) with chicken here and I found it to be very flavorful, though I probably should have asked for more spice. The chicken was tender, with good flavor coming from the generous basil. I also tried some of the curries here and I found them to be fairly average. Service (0.5 stars): We had a hard time flagging our waiter down near the end of our meal, even though we were the only customers in the restaurant. That being said, they were fairly responsive and the food came out pretty fast (again, probably because there were no other customers present). Value (0.5 stars): Prices were about right for Thai at dinnertime, but I thought the portion sizes were a bit on the small side. I think I probably could have eaten another half portion but I do eat a lot! Experience (0.5 stars): It was slightly eerie being the only customers in the restaurant, but I did find the interior to be well-done and modern. There is a bar that has its own entrance separate from the main restaurant, but again, there was no one at the bar. I enjoyed my experience here and hopefully they get some more customers as the food is good here and the restaurant is pleasantly decorated. I know for some it may be hard to believe that there are really good Thai restaurants outside of San Francisco. Well sort of off the beaten path is Coconut Bay (1 block from Burlingame Ave.), it is bar\restaurant, serving up authentic Thai dishes that are reasonably priced and not toned down too much for the Western palate. The service is always friendly and accommodating, helping those unknowledgeble first time Thai diners navigate through the menu. Having been here about 5 times in the last couple of weeks due to training close by, I've gotten a chance to sample most of their fairly large menu. Be sure to check out their: Fried Calamari Roti with Curry sauce Duck Noodle Soup Coconut Cove Noodles Garlic Chicken Although there are some average dishes here and there, the service and the majority of the dishes makes up for the minor flaws. For the cash conservatives: The lunch includes a inexpensive special menu packed with dishes served like a bento box. You choose one of the dishes from the list and it comes with a salad and vegetarian egg rolls. Also they have a happy hour on drinks and select items for those in the area looking for an after work place. read more

I've mostly had good experiences here (have only come here for lunch) - you get a good amount of food for a reasonable price. I really like the peanut sauce and chicken lunch special. The sides that come with it are also pretty good. However after coming here 2-3 times I've had different experiences service-wise. On one occasion the service was very prompt, even during a fairly busy lunch hour with a full restaurant. The most recent visit, however, saw really slow service during a very non-busy time. The food took forever to reach us. On top of that, it doesn't appear like they actually replace the tablecloth in between visits, as it was dirty when we sat down. People, people, people, taste. mmm... Good! The people who work there couldn't be more considerate and more welcoming. The menu has an awesome variety of thai food. My favorite is their Pad Thai with shrimp and when I use to eat red meat I'd order the Mint Leaf Surprise. If you're looking for an easy lunch choice on a weekend afternoon they have lunch specials for like, $8 or something... they have a hodgepodge variety of little thai yummies in a lunch box. I've been going to Coconut Bay for so long and with my younger sister and family. It's the type of place that if you go there often they recognize you. It always makes me when I return. A nice restaurant which welcomes families, but has the sophistication of a date-night dinner. Near the main street, but not over-whelmed by outside activity, it's a no-brainer meal decision. Honestly errmm, the food is mediocre at its best. The peninsula pretty much suffers the general lack of decent Thai food. I'm afraid that this one counts. Look, I don't mind having some 'fancy-schmancy' Thai dishes as long as they still have the tone of momma's cooking. Generally speaking, Thai food is best eaten casually and the food IS sissified to cater the fussy palates of predominantly non-Thai folks in the vicinity. The food is probably closer to 3.5, but their service pushes them up to 4 stars from me. I used to work in downtown Burlingame, and would eat here at least once a week. I like my Thai food extra spicy, and they knew that's exactly how I wanted it as soon as I walked in. I watched almost every World Cup game here this summer, sitting with the owners and discussing their food with them. If you're lucky, the owner will be in the back cooking, and her food is amazing. Their lunch special is an absolute steal. Ask for the minced pork with basil(Pad Gra Pow) or their Panang curry. I had a friend get their pumpkin curry and he couldn't stop saying how good it was.....and ask for their chili plate! Finish it off with a dessert Roti and you're good to go. read more

This review is more for the bar since there are tons of reviews on the restaurant and food itself. *** HAPPY HOUR is 5-7 pm with half off well beers. *** If you go, there is this big jar on their bar that looks like it's been preserving some branches, leaves, and other goodies. If you watch "No Reservations" or "Bizarre Foods" on the Travel channel it looks really similar to the jars in Asia where they ferment alcoholic drinks with some snake, beetle, or some other type of reptile, amphibian, etc inside of it as well. I asked the bartender what it was but I couldn't really understand her English but just said I'll take two. It was my first time here with other people who had been to this restaurant several times. A few of the persons in the party ordered a majority of the many items for the large group to share - the downside with this, I lost track of which items were ordered (though the upside was that I got to try a number of different dishes)! Anyhow, the food was delicious and spicy (goodness)! Also, vegetarian-friendly which was a plus! With regard to appetizers, the Roti with Curry Sauce was HELLA GOOD (!); the Garden Fresh Rolls with the dipping sauce = yummy. The soup in the coconut milk was very delightful. The Drunkard Noodles and other curry/vegetable dishes were very flavorful & tasty as well. We got a few dishes with tofu (substituted for the meat). And, I was a FAN of the fried rice! BTW, a lot of options on the food menu. The mint mojito was good though not very special - it tasted like any other mint mojito. Though the LYCHEE MARTINI was VERY yummy! = it tasted and smelled very fresh! ***I recommend drinking the lychee martini BEFORE consuming any spicy food items though - as having the drink with spicy food may offset the flavor of the lychee. I really wanted to like this place after reading so many great reviews. Yes, the coconut rice is yummy. However, it's a little too mushy. The exotic lamb curry was a little too salty and it didn't have much except for lamb and potatoes. The basil bean curd didn't have much flavor and the tofu tasted spoiled. I have a good sense for spotting spoiled tofu, by taste and smell. I complained and they let me order another dish in place of it. They said they put vinegar and that's why the tofu was sour. We ordered the curry vegetables. They said that dish has tofu as well. When I asked if they put vinegar in the dish, he said they steam the tofu to make it softer. I'm not sure why that would make it sour? I passed on the tofu and just asked them for extra vegetables. I don't want sour tofu, even if it's because of vinegar. This was my favorite dish, although it still wasn't great. The service is friendly and there's lots of nearby parking. It's a little pricey. There's a bar area and they have happy hour from 5-7pm. The food was nicely presented. However, I wasn't impressed. I won't be going back any time soon. read more

Went here today for lunch with three friends. Here is the rundown on what we had. 1) Ginger paste pork. This dish was delivered to me cold. I asked for it to be heated up. They microwaved it (you can tell if your meal is reheated by a microwave if the dish it is served in all of a sudden becomes uncomfortably hot. The pork was cooked properly, just not warm. Post-microwave the pork was overcooked (of course). They didn't bother to remove the strings on the snow peas - yuck. The sauce had good flavor and the green beans and carrots were cooked properly, but I can do a lot better at home. 2) "Legendary" Pad Thai. Overcooked pork, overcooked noodles, overcooked veg. Sense a theme here? Not only didn't live up to the "legendary" lable, barely made "edible." 3) Mint leaf surprise. We asked if they had any "larb" since it did not appear anywhere on the menu. The server confirmed that this dish was indeed larb. Larb is ground meat - always, not sometimes, always. The meat was tough and dry and overcooked and NOT ground. It did not even resemble larb. Final complaint... I am ALARMED at the new trend toward ordering rice separately from the dish. I expect ALL Indian, Mediterranean. Mexican and Chinese food to be served with rice. Who doesn't do this. Well, these guys for one. I ordered garlic rice and it was actually good, cooked properly with plenty of garlic - both raw and toasted, very well done. Overall, would not go here again. In California, there is a Thai restaurant on ever block. If you don't make Thai right, why not just go down the street. next time I will. read more

I love Coconut Bay! I never tried Thai food before I found this place, and no I love it! I come here all the time for business meetings with clients and even came for my bachelorette dinner. I think the service is great, and my favorite dishes are the legendary pad thai and the red curry (i like chicken in both) and if i feel like splurging, I go for the pineapple fried rice, which is also stellar. Overall i highly recommend this as I grew up in Burlingame and don't like much else of the cuisine there. read more

We came to Coconut Bay on a Saturday night, but a lot earlier to beat the dinner rush. When we came in there were a couple of tables already, and the servers were chit chatting around the registers. It was unprofessional, but I guess ok since the place was pretty empty. But I hate it when people are chatting and are slow to give you menus or take your order, so it got to be annoying. Anyway, we ending up ordering- -Mint Leaf Surprise (Grilled Pork Seasoned w/ Mint Leaves, Lime Juice, Chili, Onions, Rice Powder $8.99): Eh, this was ok. I enjoyed the taste of the sauce, which was a good combination of sweet and tangy with a hint of spice, but the pork was really overcooked and dry. It comes with pieces of lettuce leaves on the side to eat it with, the but the leaves weren't quite large enough to use as a wrapper, so it was confusing. -Green Curry (Chicken in Green Curry w/ Coconut Milk, Peas, Eggplant, Zucchini, Jalapenos, Bell Pepper $10.99): Pretty good, but their curry is on the watery side. I prefer thicker curries that have more coconut milk in them. I think they sear the eggplant before putting them in the curry, so they tasted awesome! However, I didn't care for the zucchini in here, although the extra jalapenos was good. -Red Curry (Chicken in a spicy red curry with coconut milk, eggplant, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, jalapenos & sweet basil $10.99): Pretty good as well, and I loved that they had eggplant in this dish also! -Ginger Chicken (Sautéed Chicken w/ Fresh Ginger, Black Fungus, Onions, Tomatoes, Scallions, Bell Peppers $10.99): Eh, I didn't like this very much. It was very mild tasting, and the chicken was dry and overcooked. Skip! -Legendary Pad Thai (Prawns Stir Fried w/ Thin Rice Noodles and Bean Curd Served w/ Ground Peanuts, Bean Sprouts, Scallions $12.09): When the name of your dish begins with "legendary", it had better be pretty freakin' delicious! This dish though was just good. I like pad thai with thicker noodles and a drier sauce, and this dish had thin noodles with a wet sauce, so it wasn't my favorite. But still a good take on pad thai, and I enjoyed it. Overall, Coconut Bay has good Thai food, but it's nothing special, and the service is so-so. There aren't any dishes here I would come back for, but give them a try if you're in Burlingame and in the mood for curry and pad thai. Parking was easy to find at the time we came. read more

Friends of mine are getting married next year and reserved the entire Coconut Bay Restaurant to host their engagement party this past weekend. They set up 3 long rows of seating and even though it was a bit chaotic and tight, the servers managed to get everything out without any problems and always came back to refill everyone's glass. THe pad thai was probably one of the best that i've ever had and the coconut curry was absolutely mind blowing- i loved it! Great service and excellent food = Highly Recommended! read more

Beautiful location and decorations. (Please note that unattended children will be relocated to the back to wash dishes.) The food is super fresh and tasty with obvious care given to the freshness of ingredients. Every dish that we ordered was hot and plentiful. Every dish was unique and flavorful. All of the utensils, glasses and plates were clean as were the napkins. Bathrooms are clean. Staff is friendly. Love this place. I attended the soft opening years ago and ate my first fried bug ever here (on a dare for a free glass of wine.) this place is awesome. Come. Try something. Even their dare bugs are .... Near-perfect except for the unfortunate surprise of my chicken dish (bbq chicken) being on the bone in 3 pieces instead of cut-up chicken breast like I'd anticipated. A minor fault... the rest of the food was great, and I was impressed by how much food I got for the killer $7.95 lunch special price: the chicken (good flavor, just not a fan of knawin' on animal bones!), sticky rice, papaya salad which was tart and refreshing, and three mini spring rolls with sweet & sour sauce. THIS IS AN UPDATE FOR THE NEW SPACE, CLOSER TO CALIFORNIA DRIVE. THE OLD BISTRO IS STILL OPEN FOR BUSINESS AND STILL GETS MY 5 STARS. The new dining room is one of the loudest rooms in Burlingame. I think even the Crepevine with about 250 people in there is more quiet. We had to move tables because of the screaming kids, but the tables are so jammed in there and the place was so full at 7pm on a Friday, we could barely hear each other speak. Also, this new place is understaffed when busy, the bar is open making for more noise. I like the old location much better: the bar was separate, the place was more intimate and even when busy, not so loud. Bummer! Apparently, Coconut Bay is the joint for happy hour, EVERYDAY 4-6pm. Who knew? This place is jumping every weekday and is a much more pleasant place to be than some poser bar (see Straits) or scary pub (see Paddy Flynn's). Is it just me or does it bother everyone? Having to order rice as a side when ordering a dish that one eats with rice seems underhanded way of over charging and just doesn't sit well with me. I wouldn't be peeved so much to put it in the review if I had to do it just once for a dish... but doing it twice...just seems very wrong. The side order of rice was so small...it's absolutely not enough for a grown man!! I guess my 1 year old nephew would still be hungry after eating that... .may be a little hyperbolic... but not too far from reality. One more negative is that their curry is pre-made with fish sauce... I wish they change that..coz I tasted their curry and it is good. Going to a Thai joint and not being to able to order their curry...I think is unfair. We ordered the Drunkard noodle and they were pretty good too... Ordered ahead for take out for an early dinner. The interior was quite nice, enticing me to return. Friendly staff greeted me and had our food ready on time. The restaurant looks to have some decent lunch specials in addition to the reasonable dinner entrees. We tried the Bean Curd Eggplant (excellently spicy), Jasmine Rice and Shrimp Pad Thai. I've been here three times now. Both of the first two times I swore never to go here again. But if I kept my promises not to re-visit a restaurant just because one thing irked me, I'd run out of restaurants. First visit (dinner): Were told the wait would be 20 minutes. While we waited at the bar, we saw a couple that came in after us get seated before us. This is a big no-no. We were obviously forgotten. So I swore I wouldn't come back. Eventually we got seated and got to eat. The roti was amazing, the Coconut Bay beer (or is it Dark Bay???) was great, and the food was pretty good. The server was nice, though slow. Second visit (dinner): We were seated immediately, but service was painfully slow. I swore I would never come again. Same as before: great roti and beer, pretty good food. Third visit (lunch): We were seated immediately. No drinks this time, so I had to settle for great roti only. Again, the food hit the spot. This time... I admit, I'll likely be back to try happy hour at some point. Overall, the food is tasty and hits the spot. I'm vegetarian and they have extensive vegetarian options (relative to other local restaurants). I recommend making reservations if you're going during the dinner hour Thurs-Sat. read more

Came here a handful of times and wanted to love it, but never again. This place is over priced for both the food portion size and quality of food. Taste is blahh, the food doesn't taste fresh, possibly prepared at least a day or two or more in advance or lower quality ingredients, and wait time was too long for a small order of fried chicken that was overcooked and dry and with just a few customers in the restaurant and their spicy dishes are mild at best. Also I never get any napkins or forks or anything with my to go orders and they never ask or provide anything every time I asked. Not good for take-out. Dining in might be better especially if you get drunk enough at the bar first until taste or quality wouldn't be an issue. Not sure if I got food poisoning from here or not, but the after affect was not something you would want to experience with in an hour of eating. read more

Food here is pretty good. I have been there a lot over the years but recently have only been for lunch. Lunch is affordable and you get a lot of food. I have tried the pad see ew and the tofu with eggplant. Both of these dishes I really liked. My mom and I like to get the roti with curry sauce as an appetizer. It's not the best, but I like it. I can see why some people said it was oily tho, sometimes some of the pieces are oily and sometimes it isn't. Waitstaff is friendly and they are attentive. I've never had any problems with ordering or ever had to wait too long to get my meal. They have a lot of available seating and a bar. I want to come here some time for the happy hour. It looks like it's really good! Parking is a pain since it's downtown Burlingame but at least it's not on the Main Street so it's not always that bad to find parking. I like to come here when I go to get my car serviced since it's within walking distance. read more

A bunch of Yelpers came here for dinner before an Elite event. The restaurant is very clean, they like to keep lighting dim at night. Overall, the food was alright. I ordered a Roast Duck dish, which was just ok for me. Not much flavor and I've had better at other Thai restaurants. Can't really say much about other dishes, but some of the appetizers they served at the Elite event was pretty good, particularly the Pot Stickers and Golden Cups (the pouch-like paper wrap). read more

I wish I lived closer! Thai iced tea is amazing and I usually never drink anything besides water and plain green tea. Love their fried rice and I NEVER eat rice unless its on sushi and even then I will eat as little as possible. Holy crap. Their rice is made with heaven. Had my 18th birthday here with 10 other guests. Called and told them I wanted a vegetarian/nonvegetarian dinner that would be served family style. They took care of everything and were super accommodating. Had a blast and everyone loved the food. It was the perfect amount. It was just about $300 and I think it was two appetizers, two main dishes, and fried rice. I'm not sure what else we had. My brother's company holds their holiday parties here sometimes and the place looks really nice at night and the food is always great. read more

The pumpkin curry, if that's all this review was to be about, would garner 5-stars. Hands-down. No contest. I'll return to this place for that dish again, for sure. It's unique, it's some of the tastiest curry I've had (yes, there is a pumpkin flavor to it and there are pumpkin chunks in it), and it draws the ooos and ahhs of onlookers ... and I'm an attention seeker by nature. What I didn't care so much for was the establishment itself. I guess these are new digs for them and I'm sure they're all proud and happy and all ... so sorry to rain on your parade, Coconut Bay, but your space is very noisy and a bit too cold and sterile. The place was pretty full when I visited and the noise of the crowd was pretty incredible. There are a lot of hard surfaces everywhere here, so sound is bouncing around everywhere. Maybe it was just tonight, or maybe it is a function of their space being new, but all the staff seemed harried. There was little connection with the diners and, as I sat at the bar, several servers called in orders to the bartender ... right across my shoulder. Excuse me! How rude! I have to report that this place has some very yummy food! Guy friend and me ordered takeout, the chicken basil is spicy with jalapenos, but the white rice took the burn right away. Yum! the Beef with peanut suace, the one bite that I got that night, was like food heaven. Next night I had to go back and get some of my own beef with peanut sauce... So I brought my best friend for sit down dinner. Service was great, my water glass was never half empty. and timing of plates was great, since we started with the vegetarian tom young (variety of veggies- green beans, zucchini, carrot, baby corn, mushrooms, tomatoes, broccoli- super delicious- not too spicy but full of flavor, and there lemon grass and kaffir leaves where broken down enough to actually be edible, unlike some places that they are huge and too much. Best Friend got a noodle dish, the highway noodles or something- not MY favorite seasoning, but she really enjoyed it. Best part was that we both had leftovers for the next lunch. I have come here a couple different times, and overall the food has always been fresh, tasty, and piping hot! Coconut Bay is not the place to go if you are looking for super authentic Thai food, hence the 4 stars. Despite this, the service is great and the ambiance is perfect for a last minute evening out. I have tried numerous dishes that were all pretty good: 1. Roti Prata - One of my favorite appetizers! Super flakey with a great dipping sauce. Its a must-try 2. People who give less than 5 stars have NO clue or writing about a different place: we know Coconut Bay since they were a small place up the street on Howard, and we can honestly say they have been getting better and better every year! Their service is IMPECCABLE, the food is wonderful, and they even fulfill special requests in food and drink. What more could you possibly want? They took over a defunct club space when they moved down Howard St., and they rightfully deserve the chic venue. read more
