After promising my friend for 4 years, I finally made good on my promise and came up to Stockton to visit him. For someone who's had horrible images of how ghetto Stockton is, I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't as bad as I thought, but then again I came on a very nice clear day. Anyway, my friend brought me here because it's his favorite place in town (or by far the most decent one, according to him) We went when it wasn't too busy and I was pretty surprised by the decor (probably because I already gave it low standards, sorry Stockton). It's clean, a bit modern and had high-raise tables for a lot of the seating. All the rolls looks pretty good but I ordered the rainbow roll because I wanted to play it safe. The fish wasn't too bad, not completely fresh but definitely fresher than a lot of places I've been to. I like the presentation of all our entrees, detail in presentation is always a big thing for me. Since my friend knew some of the workers, we got dessert on the house, which was some waffle ice cream dessert which was pretty damn good. I'd go back just for the dessert. It's tiny waffle bites filled with vanilla ice cream and chocolate. It's not a heavy dessert, which is great, so it's perfect to eat a meal. If anything, I would recommend getting the dessert. I'm not a sushi person at all so I go for their chicken teriyaki. I love this place and would go there all the time if I could afford it. Everytime I go I ask for the chicken teriyaki with all salad and no rice. I can't get enough of their salad. The salad dressing is delicious and they use greens other than iceberg lettuce. The meal is huge and never fails to leave me satisfied. My recommendation is that you get there early because there is usually a line around the block before opening. Also, avoid going at lunch if you can because you'll end up waiting for most of your break. read more

Dear Cocoro, Please forgive me for cheating on you with Raw, Sho Mi, Mikasa's, and tonight I was just at Masa's house.. I'm just naming a few and I realize that it's really hard to do any better than you and that's why I'm coming back.. Raw was too immature and didn't know if she wanted to be a lounge or a restaurant.. Sho Mi is not aging gracefully at all, but I hear she finally takes debit cards, and well Mikasa and I would like to remain friends and hang out every now and then... If that's okay?? Seriously though, Cocoro is hands down the best Japanese restaurant in town and is well worth it's prices... I love their beef cilantro roll, crunchy rainbow roll, and Coco roll.. The Korean BBQ beef is also one of my favorites along with the always freshly served 5 layer tuna.... As an appetizer I usually get the fried squid and an order of Parmesan spring rolls with shrimp... I have worked my way through the menu over the last few years and nothing has really ever disappointed me, except for the occasional wait for a table, but that comes with the territory, and is a good sign of a good restaurant.... Comparable to our usual hangout Mikuni's in Sacramento, Elk Grove, Tahoe. Never imagined you could get great sushi in Stockton of all places but here you go. We arrived about 5:30 on Saturday night and had to wait about 30 minutes, but were able to have a beer in the lobby area. Bummer they have no hard alchohol so the wifes lemon drop was out of the question. We had 4 beers, 3 appetizers, 3 large rolls and 2 desserts for $88. From sacramento came down here to pick up something from the Kingdom store and was a bit hungry so was reading yelp review and there was alot of people recommanding this place so i thought i might give it a it was a really cool place order 2 rolls forgot what they were called both were something" crunchy roll and one undon which was pretty good. the table set up was something different. Chop sticks on a rock hmm.. and our server name was... 007 James Bond....Ooh man i couldn't stop laughing.. i knew it was rude and i saw the server looking at us..but it was just too funny. Located in the center of the Miracle Mile, Cocoro is one of the best sushi houses in town. It's obvious with all the patrons in attendance to a packed house on Friday night. When I get sushi it has to be about the fish. Any sushi house is rated on the quality of the fish and this place won't disappoint. There are a lot of good rolls, but today I'm having Chirashi, an assortment of sashimi on a bed of rice. The sashimi is well balanced and the rice isn't overbearing with vinegar, well done. I do recommend the Spicy Crunchy Scallop Roll, but it's not to say that the other rolls aren't just as good. Something off the menu that you must try is the Tuna Ceviche, ahi tuna with with wonton wrappers for chips. WIth any meal you got to have the Japanese beer so I go with tall Sapporo. I like sushi and I think they do an ok job with the sushi here but not for the price they want. some of the rolls that are supposed to feature fish don't. very small portions of fish. their deep fried monster combinations of whatnot are pretty good though. I must admit that the atmosphere is very tranquil and peaceful, though the service is bland and boring. My waiter didn't even have the courtesy to return a smile... wack The food was ok, we had about six people go so we all got different types of sushi to try the majority of the menu. I'm sad to say, there wasn't any one particular roll that caught my attention. What also surprised me was the prices of a roll, for like a basic california roll it cost about $7 and I know for a fact that other places they cost about $5. So I would say their sushi is over priced; so if you go here I would say your paying more for atmosphere rather than the quality of your food. So I suppose if your willing for spend easily more $50 and want to impress someone I would totally suggest this place. I really like Sushi, and I really don't like Cocoro. I think lots of people like different types of sushi, and I definitely lean on the side of lots of fresh fish and not deep fried. I'm a big rainbow roll and spicy tuna fan, and I love fresh sashimi. The rolls here are large, and have a very small amount of fish compared to other places I've eaten at. They are also kind of expensive, and the service is O.K. I probably would not have even taken the time to rate this sushi place if I wasn't so adamant about there being other, better sushi places in Stockton. I mean come on, Stockton is a sh*t hole, but I have had much better sushi at Tora Sushi and Misaki than I have at Cocoro, and I really don't think my palate is that advanced. Love this Cocoro location as well as their tiny to-go store. This is a really great place to go for sushi here in Stockton. The waitstaff has been friendly every time I've come here and it doesn't take long for food to come out. Gone a couple more times since my initial review and have been thoroughly unimpressed. First, their sesame chicken is DRENCHED in ginger teriyaki sauce. It was overwhelming and gross. Second, their side salad is a just a heaping handful of bagged "fancy greens" which were past their prime. Third, got some nigiri sushi and there were some bones in it and it was sliced poorly (e.g. too thick). Fourth, whatever happened to bento boxes for lunch?? At least if I got a second option, I wouldn't have been stuck with so much awful sesame chicken?! The folks running the place don't quite know what they're doing, and their lack of attention to detail shows in their food and their service. I'll be moving on to other options. read more

I'm a fan of their 5 Layer Tuna Tartar! The stacked tofu, seaweed, unagi, & avocado w/sesame dressing compliments the tuna very well. The quality of the fish here is always fresh so it gives everything a flavorful taste. A crowded restaurant speaks for itself, so be sure to make your reservations ahead of time. No matter how busy they are, they always successfully deliver excellent customer service. I love the atmosphere and the people that comes here are chill. I'll be back soon. read more

I love this Japanese restaurant because the food is really good and the service is always prompt, attentive and friendly every time I have dined here. Although this place is located in the ghetto and not so safe part of Stockton (downtown), I still like coming here. I usually like to order an assortment of rolls or a sashimi plate. The prices here are a little pricey, but most Japanese places that serve raw fish usually are. One thing that I do remember about dining at this restaurant is that they have fruit flavored sake wine, which I never even knew existed. My aunt and I shared a raspberry flavored sake wine. Our server was so nice to offer to split our drink between 2 wine glasses (and were not charged extra for it). Since we really loved the sake wine so much, I asked our server if she could tell us what the name of the wine was so that I could find it the next time I go to a Japanese market. She brought out the bottle and I took a photo of it with my phone. Every time I have been to this restaurant, I have always had a great time and look forward to my next meal there. We haven't been here in a while but I just remember having a pleasant time here. The service and food was great. The decor was pretty nice too, modern in a way. They have great sushi but the only down side is that they're pretty expensive. Probably the better sushi places in the Stockton area. I wish I could've reviewed this right after I ate here, since I forgot what the sushi's were called but I think It's worth going here for a special occasion. I ordered the Crunchy Rainbow Roll. I must say it is much better than the Spicy Dragon Roll I had at Raw this past Monday. The tempura shrimp inside was crunchy and the fish on top tasted fresh. And the extra tempura flakes added to the goodness. Oh yeah, the sauce added some sweetness. My cousin said the Beef teriyaki wasn't great but he agreed the Crunchy Rainbow Roll was better. One issue I have with Cocoro is their value to quality ratio. I have had better sushi elsewhere for a cheaper price point. The quality is acceptable, but one of the rolls my friend ordered was lacking in fish on top. I ordered a chirashi bowl which was fairly decent. The fish was tasty and the rice has the right amount of vinegar flavor that I enjoy. I like Toyo more, but thats just personal preference. I would come here again. read more

Japanese food at it's finest! I've been to almost all of the Japanese restaurants in Stockton and this is by far the best. It's more of a modern day japanese restaurant. Their sushi rolls are huge, topped with tons of toppings and many flavors. I would say their Cocoro roll is one of the best, but you can't go wrong with any. I love their sesame chicken donburi. It's crunchy and yet sweat with teriyaki sauce. Coming from a Japanese person (me) this place is one of the best i've ever been to. I come here all the time and when people ask for somewhere to eat I always say Cocoro. Everyone knows this is the place to be, so it could get really crowded. They dont' take reservations, so try to get their right when it opens. And dont' forget, just like any other Japanese restaurant CLOSED on SUNDAYS :) read more

Used to go to Cocoro often for many years, seeing as I went to school right down the street. I got the chance to come back again yesterday, and now here's my way overdue review. While Cocoro is not the best sushi ever place by any means, it is still really tasty, and my go-to if I'm in the area. Keep in mind that the food is very Americanized, more so than the average sushi restaurant! The portions are large (though the price tag might explain why), and they have a wide variety of fish that is served at the perfect temperature and never icy. Sashimi Salad is delicious, and the Spicy Scallop Crunch Roll is also quite popular, and for good reason. But I'd skip on the BTS roll (too creamy). If you like more raw fish than cooked, you might want to stay away from the rolls here, which tend to be dressed up with lots fried things and sweet sauces, and go for sashimi or chirashi. Not a bad option if you want to splurge a bit on some sushi in the Stockton area. read more

We decided to have our Valentine's dinner here since I red good reviews on yelp about this bistro. We arrived 6:24pm and that it takes 40-1 hour wait to be seated since were a party of 8. Ok, that's fine. 53 minutes later, We were told that they are just waiting for another table to get clear so that they can put/connect to each other. 10 minutes passed, he came back and says that maybe another 5 more minutes. 18 minutes passed, he came back saying that the customer just got the bill and ready to pay. We patiently wait....and 10 minutes pssed, then he came back to us saying that he will talk to his manager if he can get a 2 separate tables instead. I was like HELLLOOOO.... we've been here more than an hour and you just barely think that!!! Plus you have been calling others party of 2, 3 and 4 to be seated before us???? I told him, "we better get "free appetizer for this" and he said, I can give you guys free drinks. So we ended up sitting in separate tables. The food is good and the waitress are awesome. She keeps checking on us if we need anything else. We got our bill and we still get our drinks charged. We were also had extra "SERVICE CHARGED" because we are a PARTY OF 8. I told the waitress, yeah, but it shouldn't be like that since we are seated separately and that we only got informed after waiting for more than 1 hour. I was talking to her in nice way tho. And since its HAPPY HEARTS DAY.....I didn't make a big deal out of it. My separate bill was like $85.40 + 9.07 tax + 15.38 service charged + 10.99 tips. read more

Good sushi but it's over-priced. The flavor does not match the price. The setting is nice, but it's too small; there, there is a long wait. If you do go with friends, do not have 3 people because they will seat those with 2 or 4 before you, even if you were there first. What kind of service is that? BAD!!!! I really like this place... a lot! I go during the quieter hours, monday-thursday at 530-6pm. It does get very busy later and on the weekends as it's a popular spot. The atmosphere is small, yet very open and clean with an outdoor eating area. The service has always been very polite, informative and friendly. The food is extremely good and soooooo fresh. They serve wonderful sushi, (I get sashimi), but they also have things such as tempura and teriyaki chicken for my visitors/family that don't prefer sushi. Everything has always been good. We usually start with edamame and miso soup before the main meal. I highly recommend this location. read more

The service is pretty good and I only think so because it is ALWAYS busy and I can't expect my servers attention at all times. They always maintain their smiles though. If you ever get the chance, speak to the owner, he's a lovely man. Cocoro is one of the best places in town for quality Japanese food. The wait isn't long for the food and portions are generous. Another thing I love about this place is that the atmosphere is so relaxing and classy. You don't get too many places this nice here in Stockton. It lost a star only because parking is really a pain in the butt sometimes and the prices here aren't exactly cheap. Prepare yourselves this may be long winded and slightly boring BUT informational. We are quite sad that we have to give a not so good review-- my husband and I have enjoyed Cocoro Japanese Bistro/Sushi for the last 10+ years and have in the last few years experienced not so good customer service and the quality of food has decreased. We know that through the years having to hire new staff is a huge part in our last few to several not so satisfying visits. Today (and more so lately-- we have a 2y/o SO calling in an order and picking up to come home is more convenient than to sit in a restaurant, period). This evening I called in our order, first concern is that it's loud and the girl on the other side of the phone can't hear me well-- she asks for my phone number, I give it to her and she says "for Christina?" me: "yes" (so I guess she can hear me?, why do they continue to get my husbands name if it pops up on their screen, errr don't want to bring that up to my husband, it's quite touchy like I said we've been coming to this place for 10+ years, most of the people here know us by our names, the chef "Chia" used to come out and sit with us if we were the last to leave.) We've come here and have gotten real close to the employees; they've seen us as just boyfriend and girlfriend, when we got engaged, pre and post being/getting married, birthday's for ourselves with family and friends, announcing pregnancy to them with hopes to steer us on what not to eat, a couple of the the employees attended one of our family members funeral.... I mean serious, we know and love "Chia, Christina, Masa, Rafa, Ian, Kyle, Sean... there's more... but we are currently not remembering all the names. All the above aside we are creatures of habit we order the same things.. our order tends to be $50-80 (with tip), if real hungry or with more folks or trying to impress out of towners with this gem within Stockton (our price can be well over $100). Tonight I order salmon lomi lomi, she says, "the rolls right?" (in my head (H): I did not say the roll, do they have in roll form now?, I know those other local Sushi restaurants has that roll, but no I just want the appetizer as usual) me: "no, just the appetizer please". I also order a grilled salmon bowl (for my 2y/o, he doesn't like all the saucy stuff like the teriyaki one so we order it just grilled), in picking up the food there were three bags with the receipt stapled to the outside of the bag (as usual), I looked at the receipt and the girl says "does it look right?" (H: well the receipt does) me: "yes, it does thanks". I bring the bags home and to our findings there is no lomilomi juice/sauce, just chili oil over the salmon. The bowl is a teriyaki salmon meal (my kid pushes it around and asks what it is, because it is dark in color from the teriyaki sauce, fortunately he ate it after a bit of coaxing that it was just fish). This is just this visit, we've had other similar issues with calling in orders. Missed salads, no soy sauce packages with sushi, getting someone else's order, incomplete orders, and did I mention the incorrect name... Am I going to have to open each bag and look into each container????? That is just frustrating, but will do if I have too-- as I have posted before, the parking here is horrible so having to drive in circles to now come back and return the meal or get the missed item is just a pain in the butt. First of all, Cocoro is definitely not a Stockton type restaurant. I've seen others compare it to restaurants in the City, etc, and I agree. Great service, great food and a good location. Only drawback is that it is very crowded and its definitely not the place for a quiet intimate dinner. Otherwise, good. Parking is iffy too. read more

Pretty good for a sushi restaurant in Stockton. I came here looking to satisfy my sushi craving and Cororo did the job. I ordered the Golden Prawn Roll and it came out pretty fast. The roll was kind of pricey but it got me food and it tasted good, so no complaints there. Overall, the atmosphere, food, and service was good. I came in a group and when we asked them to split the check, they didn't have a problem with it. We even got mints in the end (free candy is always a bonus!) I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! I love the sushi at this place, LOVE. & if you like squid they have the best fried squid (about $9) I have ever had, promise. I like the tuna steak roll the best (about $15), although it's pricey it's very filling, their rolls are larger than other sushi places. Their tetaki roll isn't that bad either. If you have room for dessert I love their tiramisu too, although sometimes I get a bigger slice than others.. The down side to this restaurant is that because of the size if you go on a weekend or during the dinner rush, expect to wait. And it's NOISY, very loud, and it's just the people talking!! The music isn't loud or anything, I think the tall ceilings cause for echoing. Also the service is sketchy, sometimes I get amazing service, sometimes I get crappy service, but I guess that's all restaurants. And although I don't mind paying the $15 for my roll (cause it's delicious) I do mind paying $5 for a small salad. Pretty good place. I am from San Francisco, so I have to TONS of sushi places, and this one wasn't half-bad. They had a lot of really interesting rolls on the menu. There was one with like beef separate from a vegetable roll, and you put the beef on top, it was interesting. I love love love this place! Been coming here 15+ years... please correct me if I'm wrong but don't think it's been original owners for a while but we still love coming here when we're in Stockton! It's probably at least a year since the last time until tonight... I would never in a million years think I would post a negative review for any business but tonight I'm sad to say that we never return to this business again. Our server was horrible (I didn't get her name because I was so upset and shocked at how we were treated) she's Asian with tattoo of Roman numerals (I think) on inner side of right arm-this is the 1st time I've ever commented about a waiter/waitress in my life. I'm 42 yrs old and have eaten out plenty of time. I just hope that she's not the owner/manager and that she took it out on us for having a bad day or something-just for the sake of keeping this restaurant afloat. Btw... we just looked at our receipt... this waitress (pretty Asian gal, 115 lbs maybe) closed our bill out under the name "Ricardo"-just bad all around. read more
