I remember when my buddy and I first visited Coffee Lovers. It was dark inside with minimal lights and a couple of risqué arcade games...the atmosphere was weird. Anyways, fast forward a decade or two later, and it's a simple Coffee place with a lot of options for milk tea drinks, coffee drinks, smoothies, che, dessert, and banh mi. Outdoor and indoor seating available. Multiple tvs around the room. Two separate men and women's restrooms. Parking is plentiful in this plaza. The service is friendly and thoughtful. They brought my drink to me while I was waiting. Vietnamese Coffee (comes with condensed milk and choice of hot or cold). The coffee was bold and strong but soothed and sweetened by the condensed milk. It didn't have that aftertaste. My kind of Vietnamese coffee. Support your local business. read more

Drove past here a thousand times and now tried it for the first time. Pretty big standalone building on the corner of Capitol and Aborn. Unique for a coffee shop which you normally find as a unit store in a strip mall. They have a huge menu! More than a coffee shop. Viet sandos, apps, plates... I had the coconut coffee, bbq pork banh mi, egg roll with salad, and an iced coffee. Coffees are pretty strong! So if ya like that then you'll dig it. Egg rolls were really good. Lots of meat. Came out piping hot so I know it's made fresh right then. The banh mi sandwich was good except I don't like mayo and they added some type of mayo on it. If I would've known, I would've asked to keep it off. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Decorated pretty nice for an older place. Outside is under all shade. And they have a couple TVs showing sports. Lots of old timers sitting around with a cup of coffee and chatting. I like the vibe. They also have a drive-through. So it's super convenient all around. This is the better location of the two and in my opinion the best viet coffee in San Jose. Other places taste like they use artificial creamer or sweeteners or powders. This one is clean. Strong. Unexpectedly Becoming "Homeless" at Coffee Lovers - Aborn Rd, San Jose Today, I had just returned from doing volunteer work. I spent the entire day helping people with free repairs. I was still covered in road dust, my clothes stained, my shoulders aching from working outdoors. As night fell, the mist began to settle. The winter cold crept in with each light breeze, seeping into my shoulders that had not yet had a chance to rest. Before I even had time to shower or change clothes, my wife said: "Tonight I want to go out for a drink, talk a bit, and ease the sadness just to get through this cold winter night." So I called a couple we had recently met and invited them to Coffee Lovers on Aborn Road in San Jose to sit and chat. Aborn Road at night was quieter than usual. The pale yellow streetlights reflected off the cold asphalt, a thin layer of mist hovering in the air, making the atmosphere even more chilling. When my wife and I arrived, the warmth inside the café was in stark contrast to the cold outside. A young male employee, probably in his early twenties likely a college student working part-time walked over and asked: "What would you like to drink?" I replied calmly, "Give us a moment we're waiting for two friends to arrive." He walked away, but I noticed him glancing back at us. Outside, the night mist grew thicker, and the café windows began to fog up. At the time, I was dressed rather poorly black pants covered in white paint stains and road dust, a winter knit hat pulled over my head. My wife was also bundled up in a thick sweater, wearing sandals and a knit hat--clothes chosen purely to endure the cold, not exactly the appearance of typical café customers. Perhaps because of how we looked, the staff began to wonder: were these two actual customers, or... homeless people pretending to be customers just to escape the cold? Just as I suspected. A few minutes later, another female employee came over and asked again: "What would you like to order?" I answered the same way: "We're waiting for our friends." Less than six minutes later, the original employee returned and asked the exact same question for the third time. The café was warm, but a different kind of cold began creeping in from outside, into my chest. At that moment, the café had only two other customers, along with my wife and me. There was no possible confusion about us simply waiting for someone. I turned to my wife and whispered, half-joking and half-sad: "They definitely think we're homeless." I pulled out my phone and texted our friend, half serious, half joking: "Hurry up. The café thinks we're homeless. They might kick us out soon. It's freezing!" My friend laughed, thinking I was joking. Fortunately, while the cold mist still blanketed the street outside, our friends arrived. They immediately went to the counter and ordered four avocado smoothies clearly confirming that my wife and I were, in fact, real customers. We chatted warmly, laughter filling the space and warming the cold evening. But when my wife and I stood up to leave, a female employee hurried after us perhaps still thinking that the two "Vietnamese homeless people" hadn't paid and were about to run back into the cold night. Only when our friend turned around did she suddenly remember: oh they had already paid. And that was that. Stepping outside, the mist was even thicker, the cold rushing in instantly. Aborn Road lay silent under the yellow streetlights. I pulled my collar up and walked on, laughing softly to myself. For the first time in my life, simply because we were dressed poorly after a day of volunteering on a cold, misty winter night my wife and I unexpectedly became "homeless" right in the middle of a coffee shop in San Jose. A memory that is both sad, reflective of human judgment, and deeply thought-provoking especially on a cold night so close to Christmas. read more

The food and drink options here are delicious however the ingredients (for the food and drink) don't taste fresh. That is why I'm giving this place 3 out of 5 stars. I also ordered a matcha latte today, and it came in a straw-less sippy cup. I saw the cup and immediately was going to ask for a straw but decided not to because you're not supposed to have a straw with it. And sure enough every time I drank out of it green globs of matcha dripped out of the cup, which stained my clothes with green globs the first few sips when I didn't notice it at first. I was not sure what to get, but Vietnamese coffee can never go wrong with me. Vietnamese Coffee: Man this is what I call Vietnamese coffee. It is very strong and packed quite a punch on the first sip. I love the ice variant more than the hot version, and they did a great job in showcasing what this should taste like. However, I will say that if you are not too huge fan of coffee or don't want anything strong, I recommend steering away from this. But if you really want a good, authentic taste, then go for it. I visited Coffee Lovers on a Friday (late) morning and found it incredibly busy. I think they were hosting an event, because every single table was occupied. The interior was spacious and minimally decorated, and they also had some outdoor seating, as well as a drive-thru. I went up to order at the counter and got a Vietnamese Iced Coffee and the Chicken Avocado Sandwich. The sandwiches come with potato chips, but I decided to upgrade to french fries. My coffee was ready almost immediately and I didn't have to wait long for the sandwich either. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee was strong and tasty - I was glad I got a large! The Chicken Avocado Sandwich was also pretty good and I especially loved the pesto sauce. The portion size was very generous, so I didn't end up finishing the fries (which weren't that great anyway). A blast from the past. I have not been here in over 18 years. I did not have Tess (she just turned 18) when I was last here. There wasn't a drive-thru at the time either. I don't remember much. I came here after my gym session at the 24 Hour Fitness at Eastridge. That isn't my home gym, but I went there on purpose because I've been craving Vietnamese cofee. I do not like that my coffee looked like a boba drink. I don't drink those and prefer a regular plastic cup/lid/straw. Other than that, everything was splendid. I would not come here for their banh mi (it is subpar), but why order when Hong Phat is across the street? The ca phe sua da was strong, sweet, smooth, and robust. There was only 1 car a head of me and I only had to wait a few minutes for them to make my banh mi. The banh mi itself was just ok, but good enough for me to come back. I love coming here to study, get work done, talk to friends, and, of course, drink a cup of strong ca phe sua da or Vietnamese iced coffee. I have done a lot of productive work here over the years. I appreciate that this coffee shop is open until 12am. It's one of the only safe late night spots to do work away from home in the city. Service here is quick and they bring your order to your table if you are dining in. Cons: It does get kind of loud with people talking and TVs playing in the background. People do smoke outside. Anyway, this CL is in a centralized location which makes it easy to meet up with your folks regardless of what part of town you drive from. I had lunch with one of my girlfriends yesterday. Outdoor seating is alive and well -- it was packed! My girl ordered their Pastrami Sandwich and I ordered the Vegetarian Burger. We agreed that lunch was good. They have a pretty nice variety of lunch choices including Vietnamese sandwiches, burgers, soups, and full blown rice plates with the works.
