I was honestly shocked by my recent experiences here. Last week, my mom came by twice--once on a weekday and once on the weekend. Even though the shop was nearly empty, she had to wait at least 15-20 minutes on the weekday and almost 45 minutes on the weekend just for coffee and bread. That kind of wait time is simply unacceptable. What surprised me even more was that every time I visited, there were only 2-3 employees working. This is a well-known coffee shop, yet it feels severely understaffed. In the U.S., customers value their time, and any business should understand that. If you consistently make people wait this long, don't expect them to keep coming back. The drinks used to be one of the reasons I loved this place. They weren't the absolute best in San Jose, but they were good enough that I kept returning. Unfortunately, the quality has noticeably declined. One day the coffee is overly bitter, another day it's overly sweet. The taste is inconsistent from visit to visit, which tells me there is little quality control. I'm extremely disappointed. This used to be one of my favorite coffee shops, but the way it's being run now makes it feel like customer experience is no longer a priority. Long wait times, inconsistent drinks, and chronic understaffing are not what I expect from a business with this reputation. Trung Nguyen Legend Coffee seems very serious about coffee and uses high quality ingredients. I really like the Iced Coffee with Coconut Cream. It's a good balance between the bitterness of the coffee with the sweet coconut cream. The egg coffee was okay, but I had bought it with a BOGO and didn't drink it right away, so I need to try it again fresh. I didn't like the tiramisu latte. It seemed too sweet. This location is spacious and elegant. There is a lot of seating and a couple outlets. This place lives up to its name. Walking in here felt like I was transported to a serene cafe filled with neutral colors and aesthetically pleasing accent pieces. I ordered the Legend Coffee with milk and a thit nuong banh mi. Shoutout to the staff who were kind enough to cut the banh mi into sharable pieces! When the coffee arrived to my table, I was surprised as it came in a drip coffee style with a glass of ice and a cute stainless steel container with condensed milk. It was a fun and exciting process as I waited for the drip coffee to finish doing its thing, mixing in the condensed milk, and adding in the ice cubes to my liking. As you can tell, I don't drink this style of coffee much, haha. When I finished preparing my concoction and took my first sip, I was SOLD. I can tell why it's so popular and will continue to rave about it until I come across another one that beats this place. When the banh mi featured by thien huong sandwiches arrived, I could already tell it was going to be a banger. The bread was perfectly warmed and crisp on the outside while being soft on the inside. The thit nuong was perfectly seasoned and juicy. The pickled carrots, jalapeños, and cilantro danced together in a rhythm of harmony, OOF this was just too good. I'm salivating just thinking about it. Docked off one star because of the icky experience of being approached by some random stranger who went by each table inside the cafe to hand out these tiny flowers that were picked off the ground and asked for money. Not food, money. He originally asked for money because he was thirsty but when my party pointed him to the water station that was in the center of the cafe he kept pushing for money. This post is mainly about the bánh mì Thiên Hương counter inside Trung Nguyên Coffee. Service was quite slow, about 15-20 minutes for drinks and 30 minutes (29 minutes to be exact) for the bánh mì. I didn't order a drink myself so I can't comment on the taste, but my friend did and had to wait a long time. We visited Saturday at 1pm and it didn't seem very crowded. Parking was also difficult to find. They had a buy-3-get-1-free bánh mì promotion, but the portions were smaller and had less meat compared to Đức Hương. The price difference is small ($7.50 here vs. $8.75 at Đức Hương with a buy4-get-1-free large bánh mì promotion). Taste was okay overall, but the bread wasn't very crispy. Trung Nguyen is such a nice cafe! I would go more often if I could. I think the only downside is that their drinks are a bit pricey. I went on a weekday, so it was a pleasantly nice atmosphere. They play calming music, it's clean, and I love the interior design of the cafe. There are also plenty of seating. The staff are friendly and give drinks in a timely manner. My friends and I all ordered something different. I didn't get to try everything but my favorites are the white Vietnamese coffee and lemongrass tea. Both were very refreshing, I would definitely order on or the other again. Drinking the white Vietnamese coffee is easy for me to drink. It's strong but after letting it sit for a while and tasting the sweetness of the flavor makes it enjoyable. As for the lemongrass, it's a unique flavor. I also had the green waffles. The For Here size was reminiscent of a traditional macchiato size. The To Go size is more of what you might expect at the $7-8 price point for coffee. Four of us went here over the weekend to celebrate Tết in the plaza. We were tired so we decided to stop here and grab coffee per recommendation by our friend. I tried their coconut coffee and I actually really liked it! I did think though it was going to be like coconut milk with cafe sua da, but it was just a coconut whip. Found out about this place through IG. I saw online that they serve bahn mi, so husband and I decided to go here for lunch to try their coffee and bahn mi. We walked in and were greeted. With limited seating, they could redesign the space to bring in more chairs and tables instead of having faux plants that look pretty but the space was not functional. Worst coffee spot I've ever been to. OVERPRICED and ridiculously long wait times -- on a slow day, too. I ordered two Legend Coffees, total came out to around $22 , tip no included Ordered at :27, didn't get them until :54. That's almost a 30-minute wait for two to-go coffees. Hello??? And before anyone says "waiting is worth it if the drink is good" -- yeah, that's true... but absolutely NOT here. We got two tiny cups that weren't even the same size as the menu photos -- more like 12-14 oz cups filled 100% with ice, and maybe 100ml of actual coffee. Literally two sips and it was gone. To make it worse, the staff wasn't friendly at all -- not even a simple apology for the long wait. Tables were abit dirty, crumbs everywhere like nobody bothered to clean anything for a fancy coffee place? Pleasantly surprised by this place. They have your basic coffee options but also some more special Vietnamese drinks that I have never seen at other cafes. We got the egg coffee and the green tea latte with jelly. Both were very tasty. The egg coffee was initially very strong in terms of coffee (will definitely keep you awake) but overtime the egg balanced out the drink. The green tea latte with jelly was my favorite, it had a hint of floral and a little thicker in texture. I wouldn't compare to a matcha latte. I would definitely recommend trying the green tea latte if you're looking for a refreshing drink. And bonus as they provide free Vietnamese sweet bread on the side with your purchase and it makes the perfect little snack with your drink. Trung Nguyen Legend is one of the most popular cafes in Vietnam from Dalat. I went to a location in Saigon but they were out of Cà Phê Trứng that day. After opening a location in Orange County last year, they opened two new locations this July in San Jose in Vietnamtown and at Silvercreek/Capitol Expressway. They specialize in Cà Phê Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced and Hot Coffee) and Cà Phê Trứng (Egg Coffee). Finding a hot Viet egg coffee is difficult, even in San Jose. The location in Vietnamtown has a big outdoor patio and about 10 tables inside with a retail shop for drinkware, coffee bags & phin (Viet dripper) gift sets. It gets very busy during the weekend. I've had some difficulty ordering because their English is limited and the menu is complicated. So double check your receipt to make sure you get your coffee for dine-in, otherwise you might get your expensive coffee in a paper to-go cup. The presentation of their coffee is super nice, as it is served to you on a wooden tray with a description card and translucent paper with a Viet saying, a small glass pitcher of condensed milk, a tall ceramic cup for hot coffee or a glass cup for ice, and a black phin over a glass cup. You also get a small glass pitcher of condensed milk which you can add to your own personal taste. The Cà Phê Sua Da and Trung are both smooth, flavorful and made with good quality. Many people have rated it low due to the price of the drinks. Yes, the most expensive options are $13.95 for the Zen or Ottoman sets and I probably wouldn't order them again now that I've tried them once. They also have added some new menu items such as Pomegranate Tea. But there are much less expensive options such as the Creative Energy set for $7.
