I am a big fan of Coffeetime, not only is it a neighborhood favorite but it's well known around the city. Late night hours are great for working, studying or just to get away. Seating can be dicey sometimes and you may have to fight or bargin for an outlet. However they have outdoor seating and are very pet friendly. I would have rated them higher however the quality of the coffee often depends on who is working. For example there is one male employee, that refuses to make my drink because "he doesn't know how"... I order a blended caramel latte...Not a difficult drink to make. Furthermore, it's the ONLY drink I ever order at Coffeetime and all the main employees easily recognize me & my drink. read more

I stopped in here on my way home from a run because I was cold, hungry (and pressed for time, so I knew that buying breakfast would be the more convenient option), and saw the Mastercard and Visa stickers in the window. The atmosphere itself seemed rather inviting. I ordered a tea and an egg-and-cheese bagel sandwich. They get points for offering several kinds of teas. The sandwich, on the other hand, didn't rock my world. I'm convinced they get their bagels from nearby Portland Bagel Co. (as the bagel was devoid of density and flavor), and I realized after leaving that they put artichokes and roasted red peppers on the sandwich. Now I love artichokes and roasted red peppers, but please disclose on the menu (for anyone who doesn't) that the sandwich comes with these things. read more

This place is in a great location. I like the open windows and the benches outside. It's a great place to sit down outside and hang out. But the only problem is that the coffee is sub-par. I ordered an espresso macchiato. They served it to me in a HUGE cup and without a saucer and spoon, which is a big no-no for me. The HUGE cup was filled with burnt bubbly milk foam. And the espresso....very bitter. So my experience of sitting outside and relaxing was ruined by a very bad cup of coffee. I've had this same problem on several occasions. I may stop by again to relax, but I'll probably get a cold drink instead. read more

I should mention that when it comes to Coffee Shops, I am primarily concerned with: a) How late they're open b) How much space they have c) Seating d) Ambience e) Quality of Drinks/Food I all but one of these categories, I'm quite satisfied! They are open late which is great if you're a night owl who likes to get out of the house to work sometimes. It's a large palce with lots of seating, and the decorating/general feel is very groovular. The drinks and food are only so-so. It's hard to compete with Stumptown and Coffee House NW. I will say though that they're largest size is HUGE. It's like 5293580 oz. or something close to that I'm pretty sure. The largest size kind of looks like a ridiculous prop a clown would use to make fun of large coffees. So like, I don't know if that's a good or bad thing??? read more

3.5 Although I can't taste the difference between Starbucks and Stumptown coffee or any other coffee for that matter, Coffee Time's coffee was definitely sub-par even for my taste. HOWEVER, its unique seating area and "secret" studying areas in the deep parts of this shop is definitely worth checking out. Strong, dark, brooding brew. Fresh in Portland back in the day I was into the over roasted java cups that provided the antithesis to the lukewarm brown water of Deny'sesque diners. Staying open late and enticing an offbeat crowd to contrast with the well established row of booze and beer joints seemed like an appropriate compliment to the neighborhood. I came here for over a year without knowing it rambled on with funky nooks of couches, chairs and chandeliers beyond the front counter that echoed opium dens as much as caffeine hangouts. The clientele spills out onto the tight sidewalk at night hugging bistro tables as tight as the cigarette to their lips. Uncomfortably comfortable for certain types I guess. We were there just yesterday as we are moving to the area (which is one of the coolest hubs in Portland) and we stumbled upon this little creative delight. If you are wanting super sophisticated then this place probably isn't for you BUT is you want the coolest creative space in town to work, meet and have coffee then you probably can't beat coffee time... The place is huge and generally hopping. Great for them, bad for the customer's as - and this has happened on EVERY of my over twenty visits here - they have a staff of one. As in, the same one person who takes your order is the same one person who makes your coffee as well as gets your food. The chai blended iced drink is delicious and said one staff person is usually very accommodating with requests like, "The milk is bad, may I please have an uncurdled carton?". I have admittedly only sat in the coffee shop to enjoy my coffee once (again, good coffee) and I felt icky and sticky after wards. Thus: If you are looking for a place to chill out and perhaps would rather not be covered in sticky stuff the whole day/night thereafter, sit outside with your coffee or pick another place. Additionally, don't even think about getting a quick cup of coffee here. As far as the food, my friend got a chicken panini and said it was delicious but I have not personally tried anything there. read more

I am a big Coffee Time fan, despite the "unique" atmosphere. I haven't frequented this place enough yet in my three short months living in Portland to assess if I mean unique in a GOOD way, or unique in a BAD way. Peculiar-ness, whether it be in the availability of cock-and-ball shaped doughnuts, the homeless transients playing the bongo on Hawthorne, or the fact that I have seen toplessness, fire-jugglers, and been handed lavender stalks and balloons all within the same evening, is one of the many components of the Portland culture that makes this my favorite city in the U.S. I don't get too bothered by the occasional customer that tries to talk to either myself, or perhaps themselves, beside me when I'm enjoying my latte. Earphones, whether or not you are actually listening to music, can be a great block when you are trying to concentrate and focus on your work and usually keeps those trying to make conversation with you at bay. However, I don't mind a conversation from the occasional stranger. Coffee Time is lined with cozy booths, but I prefer to sit in the open seating and not take up too much space. My favorite drink at coffee time isn't on the menu the last time I checked, the pistachio latte. But man, is it worth going back for!! Luckily I live in the area, or perhaps unluckily, since I will most likely be spending a fair amount of money here now over the next year. Another great component of Coffee Time is their hours, they are one of the few coffee shops in the area I know of that is open late even during the week. Check it out! read more

I went here for the first time today. The wireless was either extremely slow or (during my second hour there) non-existent. The back rooms are so tiny and quiet that anyone with a penchant for whispering to himself or talking on her cell phone will disrupt your concentration and keep you from being able to focus on your bad short story that will never be published. Or so I hear. And either people here smell like feet, or it has a ventilation problem (or both). I noticed another reviewer mentioned the odor. The coffee was good. The bagels were small. I will be back eventually because the word on the street is that chess breaks out here from time to time, and I could tell that I'd have had a better experience had I stayed in the front. Pros: open late....and that's about it as far as I can see! Cons: parking sucks, it smells, bathroom is dirty, and the crowd which typically consists of a few students, hipsters, the frat boy type, but mostly homeless people. I don't mean to sound like a snob - but when someone pees on the couch in front of you, it's not easy to enjoy your coffee (typically, too strong btw). Its definitely not clean, but the staff is nice. Still when I want to sit somewhere for a couple of hours to get some work done, I want to be comfortable. In my opinion, its not the most conducive study scene in town. Oh, also - take cash if you plan on a single drink as they have a $5 minimum credit card purchase rule. read more

I'll start out with good things about coffee time: - I've gotten so much homework done here due to how late they stay open and how cozy those booths are (cozy to me at least). -I like how many different types of people congregate here even if some of them are a bit scary at times. - Saved me from going insane those times I needed to get the hell out of my apartment. -Was the place I went to during several big "moments" in my life strangely. -Whether or not all the drinks they have posted taste any good. They really do have a unique selection or drinks Now for the BaD BAD BaD things about coffee time: - There's a lady that works there with long brown hair who I suspect is the manager. She yelled at me for sitting down before ordering. There were six people in front of me. I sat down for 15 minutes because I have a back problem and had walked a long way. She proceeded to lecture me again at the front counter in front of even more people without even politely asking me at least why I sat down. - When you open the door to the coffee time bathroom hot air with the stench of old piss will waft in your face. I often fantasize about throwing a bomb full of bleach and oxy clean in there. read more

This is one of the few, if the only, coffee shop in NW that is open past 9 or so. I love the midnight closing time about Coffee Time. I don't have any complaints about the drinks or pastries, and in fact, I love the Salted Caramel Bar thing. So far, so good, yes? Yes. I only have two complaints: 1. The baristas play terrible music that is very loud and there are speakers throughout the whole shop. One day is was dubstep, the next it was screamo punk. I get that in Portland people are passionate about their music and if they want to play punk, they will. But most people in the shop are having conversations or trying to get work done and really loud and invasive music is for a bar or concert. Even with headphones it doesn't drown out the music. 2. By the time it is 11 until closing time, I've had some encounters with people that have made me super uncomfortable. I live like three blocks away, so the grungy crowd of Portland isn't new to me. But when I'm trying to finish an essay, having a older man sit very close to me and stare is not okay. Take the good with the bad I suppose. read more

I live right across the street from this place. In fact, when I stumble out my door I am practically already inside. This place was my constant haunt when I had just moved in and needed some wi-fi and caffeine. One of the things I have always liked about CT is the sprawling, informal sidewalk atmosphere outside the doors. Chess players, sunshine, local vagrants bent on conversation. Now, however, thanks to the smoking ban all the chess players and vagrants have gone over to Starbucks. And today, a rare sunny day, I got my coffee in one of their lovely for-here mugs and went outside. But the sunshine was on the other side of the street, on the benches outside the 21st Ave Bar & Grill. Thinking this is a generally convivial and co-sustaining section of street, I happily crossed over to drink my brew and soak up some rays. Then this lady who works there/owns the place/something comes over and chews me out for taking their mug across the street. Why didn't I just get a to-go cup? Well, because I wanted to save the environment, save them money, and I enjoy the solid feel of warm porcelain in my hand. And I live right here, man. I'm not a thief. So basically this place has lost all the things that made them my fave for a while. And the coffee's okay, and the wi-fi slow as all get-out. If you want to bask in the sunshine, well, bring your own coffee. read more

I swung by Coffee Time on a Saturday morning with a friend to get some study time in before the evening hours. I sincerely enjoyed my experience at this coffee shop, and I was amazed at the extent to which there were creative seating arrangements and tables spread throughout the space. It was pleasantly busy but everyone had a place to sit and work! Additionally, there were numerous outlets, lamps, and tables in both the sunlight and also in a more dim environment depending on one's study preferences. The music was a bit loud, however, I personally didn't find it especially distracting. The chai was yummy; I soon hope to be back at Coffee Time later this semester! read more

Relaxing place with good coffee, the blueberry muffin is not really good, but the coffee is great, the barista is nice so you can ask him for any suggestions, a lot of space so if you wanna be more quiet you can go all the way back the coffee shop and it's more cozy, AC plugs almost everywhere, just one restroom (ask for the keys ) read more

Food/Drink: lacking any real distinction, coffee was alright, but can't say I haven't had much better. Price: about average for what you'd expect in Portland, overpriced coffee (but thats become standard) Personality: Outdoor seating and indoor atmosphere--layout--is pretty nice, free wifi doesn't hurt, but the baristas are typically rude, don't seem like they like their jobs or want to help you. They insinuate that you owe them something (tip) for making them grudgingly do their job. Also they say they take credit cards but require a minimum purchase or charge a fee. As most cups of coffee are not $5 (although some are close), you basically have to buy two things to be "allowed" to use your card. This is not accepting credit cards. Accepting credit cards means you accept the costs of doing business which may include surcharges, you do not pass those costs on to your clients, because they want to use a service you supposedly provide. long and short, I'll probably end up back here at some point for the wifi or for one of the few non-bar late night hangouts, but as soon as I find something better, I'm ditching coffeetime for good. read more

Espresso is supposed to be a couple tablespoons worth, not a cup of watered-down, bitter-slop in a saucer. I mean Christ... send your employees to espresso school, get an automatic espresso machine, throw away those 2 month old beans... get your shit together. Great place to buy roasted coffee. Their Costa Rican roast is fantastic. The ham and cheese croissants are also quite tasty. The staff is friendly. When they ran out of brewed coffee they gave me a free cappuccino instead of asking me to wait around for a fresh brewing. read more

The coffee and other drinks are just okay though and for being open so late, a place where I would imagine people are prone to camp out a bit, I would expect better food. I am not a big coffee person. Tea is my thing. That being said, the main reason I've been frequenting Coffee Time is as a place to meet a client to discuss our project since it's close to where I live and easy to find. There isn't anything stellar about the place, but it's fine. That is, until today when some barista with a power trip came along. Usually I would get there early, order something, and hang while I waited for my client to arrive. We would usually meet for an hour or so and she would leave, not getting anything to drink/eat. Today though, I was both trying to save money for a trip coming up and be somewhat healthy by not drinking coffee/milk/etc., so I didn't order anything immediately. Barista comes over and asks if I want anything, I say no thanks for now and that I'm waiting for someone. Somewhat rudely she tells me that only paying customers can use wireless, and I reply with, "Okay," since I wasn't using my computer anyway. Client arrives, and immediately pushy waitress is back, asking if we want anything. Client orders something, and I say no thanks, to which she begins rudely accosting me about how I'm taking up space in the (fairly empty at 9AM on a Monday) coffee shop, and that only paying customers can use wireless. Again I say I'm not using wireless, and she tells me that I can't just hang out here. Really? Because last time I checked pretty much any coffee shop, or even most restaurants are okay with someone sitting with someone else who is ordering something. Give me a break. Not to mention (as other people have stated) I've seen many a crazy assed person or group of college students hanging around the place and not always with a drink on hand. Just because you have a mediocre job with no authority doesn't mean you should take it out on me. read more

Not only do they serve lavender lattes(which I had yet to find here on Portland), the staff are super friendly, they are open late, and the atmosphere is cozy and adorable. Wanted to sit somewhere other than in my living room tonight and thought I'd give this shop a try, since it stays open so late. The particular neighborhood is not ritzy or presumptuous. I passed some laughing intoxicated folk at the nearby bar, a few folks bustling into the next door theater, and three people begging for money. Granted, this is the kind of neighborhood I'm happiest in. The cafe itself keeps up a really cozy space. While I was there, everyone there was quiet and working on something, besides a cute lively conversation between one of the baristas and a friend of his. I got to sit in a VERY comfy chair in the back room with a fantastic vanilla rooibos tea. I got a ton of reading and writing done with almost no interruptions. It was fantastic! When I have a bit more than two dollars in my pocket, I definitely want to go back and get one of the muffins they carry from Petunia's vegan bakery. If you're not lactose-intolerant like myself, you're going to have a hard time resisting getting a grilled cheese sandwich while you're there - the comfy smell of amazing cheese traveled around the house the whole time I was there.
