Oh, Coffee Time. I have been coming here for so many years, since the walls were covered in fantastically odd murals, since the bathroom walls were an eclectic array of bizarre graffiti and love poems. A lot has changed. Even so, this place is amazing. It's such a great late-night study spot, the coffee is great, the people there are one of a kind. It's always a great place to stop by, whether you're alone or with a group of people. And that gluten-free apple coffee cake was DELICIOUS. In other words, there is something for everyone. I do wish people would smoke further away, for when it gets warm I would like to sit outside without having to breathe in all that smoke. read more

The coffee and atmosphere are both first rate. There's a Starbucks a couple of blocks away which just makes me want to LOL. Why would I waste my time or money at Starbucks (getting coffee that's only half as good) when I could be here enjoying the ambiance? The tables out front are great for people-watching, the customer service is on-point, and the back room (and murals) are worth the stopover. Plus: Having been a part of the Nob Hill community (since about 1995) Coffee Time is a legitimate part of the (Pre-Invasion) Portland culture. Only 4 stars as the number of Homeless using free Wi-Fi and clustering out front is higher than I paticularly fancy in a Coffee Shop. read more

I would say the only reason to go to coffee time is because it's open late in a town that wraps up 9pm. (Darn, it Portland, what are we owls supposed to do?) Or maybe if you've been treated too nicely that day and want to balance out your good mood with some rude and dismissive 'service' from an uptight coffee-pourer (to call him a 'barista' would be too generous.) It's a cool space. So it has the potential to be a great find in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the opportunities in the space tend to be overshadowed by the strikingly not-friendly, uptight staff who are clearly unhappy with their own lives and are glad to bring some unhappiness to yours. If you do go, enjoy a stunningly amateurish, very creepy, dark mural of passed out strippers and gangster violence on the back wall. Bizarre mismatch. read more

The issue here is longevity and sustainable pleasure. I am friends with so many people that used to work here, and I met them from the other side of the counter. I would never take back my time spent at Coffee Time. I've met so many amazing people here and started so many random friendships and strange conversations. Look out for the guy with really big pants (MC Hammer style) he'll probably want to tell you all about the Mayan calender and some kind of alien philosophy... he forgot twice that he had already told me that stuff before. There will also be a small man in the table-nook in the wall eating something smelly out of a can. He is there every night. On the weekends and some holidays you will get the high school students who just got their license and need somewhere to go late-night. (That's where I started years ago, so I can't diss that too much.) A few artists will be drawing, a few students will be taking notes, a few chess geeks will be playing outside on the tables, and smokers will be running from the back of the shop to the front every 40 minutes to light up. Oh, I wish it wasn't so easy to sum up what a night at Coffee Time is like... but the dependability is actually pretty nice, even after the novelty wears off. For a while, the owner bolted the CD player closed and Jack Johnson would play on repeat for days. I know it it was bolted/locked because I saw it with my own eyes... sick torture... gah. I am so glad that ended at some point. The best thing about Coffee Time, other than the people, is the rooms. The outdoor tables count as a space, the main room with tables and booths, the middle room with a bathroom attached, the back "living room" and finally the (what once was) secret room in the back corner painted with bar scenes. I probably love the living room the best... and I enjoy the big circle they cut in the wall. I might try that at home sometime. Go to Coffee Time and start talking to your neighbor. Keep the feel alive, make friends. You might even see me there someday. read more

I love this place. I mean, for the most part, coffee is coffee. Sure there are differences between roasts and bean origins, but for the most part, all that stuff gets averaged out in the blending process. The questions for me go like this: is this coffee fresh? (Yes) is it hot? (Yes) are the baristas nice? (So nice!) do I die when I look at how much it costs? (No). Boom. You got yourself a solid coffee joint. An added perk of coffee time (see what I did there?) is definitely their pastries. They partner up with a local bakery to have some great snacky type food for breakfast or studying. read more

The best coffee shop in my neighborhood and the ONLY one open late late (until midnight)- perfect for essay writing binges. The interior is very cozy and the people working have been always been polite to me. Sometimes the internet times out but usually it is good. Their espresso is perfect and they have a variety of pastries, plus bagels with smear and sandwiches they make and toast for you. Ask the barista for the chess piece bag and sit outside, there is a regular crowd of chess players here that will play with you. If you're not into playing chess, there are plenty of seats inside, some with tables and some armchairs in the bag where you can curl up with a book. read more

The stars this place did get are for the atmosphere. The furniture and decor are older and funkier than those in your average coffee shop in this bright, shiny, clean industry. Everything else sucked. OK, I admit I didn't try the coffee. (I rarely drink it these days because my stomach has all but given up on coffee.) Mostly, what sucked was that there were flyers everywhere announcing, WE MAKE FRESH SANDWICHES NOW, and as you walk in, a sign gives a listing of grilled panini sandwiches. I ordered one, and when I saw the barista unwrapping a cellophane-bound sandwich I must have scowled, because she said, "You know we also make sandwiches fresh, right?" Oh. OK. You just don't put them on your menu. I get it. Then she points to a stack of slips of paper for ordering the fresh sandwiches. These were quite confusingly written/organized (keep in mind, I'm stupid AND cranky when I'm hungry). At the top, a list of five sandwiches (and breads), ending with, "...or build your own!" Following that, a list of ingredients, which I assume is the "build your own" menu and ignore, choosing a "cheese monster" three-cheese sandwich. Then the barista looks at me like I'm insane, and asks what I want on the thing. I get it. The ingredients menu is not JUST the build your own menu. Fine. I go down the list with her. When my sandwich arrives -- with Ruffles potato chips, still in the bag -- I discover the "sourdough" is practically wonderbread, and the ingredients are stacked such that they slime together a bit (memorably, the cucumbers and pickles could not be separated). In the meantime, the bathroom key (which, of course, I asked for and was expected to just know where it was) didn't work in the bathroom and had to use that of a neighboring business...which was being painted. Customer service here is spotty. Sometimes, it's attentive and friendly. Other times, such as this morning, it's nonexistent. I walked in, the barista working was busy on his phone; I said "Good morning!" and he didn't notice, continuing on his phone. I walked out, and I am pretty sure he still didn't notice. Another area of inconsistency is the ephemeral nature of their vegan pastries -- sometimes they have them, sometimes they don't. And then, if they have them, you never know what it is that they'll have...oatmeal raisin bar? chocolate brownie? rhubarb crumble bar? peanut butter chocolate chip bar? They do seem to favor square-shaped vegan treats. I would also add that day-old pastries -- when they have them -- are often sold at an astonishingly low price. That's nice. But when it's such a crapshoot here, in terms of quality of service and what they have in stock to serve, why settle when there are so many other coffee options in the area? read more

As a coffee house this place is fairly run-of-the-mill. The coffee is good enough to make you take a "serious slurper card" with anticipation of that free 11th cup. The service can be a little snooty, but that comes with the neighborhood. Overall, nothing to write home about. But as a sociological study this place is a gold mine! Just walk past the place and you get a glimpse of what makes Portland so interesting. Once you're actually inside one of the 3 large rooms that make up Coffee Time you get to experience the crazy guy that is mumbling to himself in close proximity to people carrying on conversations, some of the most amazing chess players I've ever seen, high school girls gossiping, the deep loner guy reading about some 17th century philosopher, a couple meeting from a craigslist ad, students/others using the free wifi, the poets and writers scribbling furiously, and many more. I could spend hours in here playing cards, catching up with friends, or just people watching. Who knows, maybe the next time you come in I'll be the annoying girl having a cell phone conversation loud enough for everyone to hear. read more

I have gone back to Coffee Time since my last unpleasant visit and thought the folks working were much kinder/hospitable. 3 stars because there is not consistency in their drinks... $5-6 bucks for a latte and I assume the milk will be frothed well, not bubbly and scolding. 3 words: Rose-flavored Latte. (Hmmm, technically two words, I guess.) It sounds a little weird at first, and in fact, at first sip, it is. But it's pure mouth-happiness delight after that. Overhearing teenagers, tweakers, musicians, and the occasional break-up is a quintessential part of of what coffee shops are about: sipping on a foamy drink, notebook in hand, listening to life going on around you. Coffee time is a mere five-minute walk from the hostel I'm staying at and has already found its way into my top-10 coffee shops list (note to self: write down list soon). The coffee is good enough, and they display creativity with their special drinks (a s'more inspired coffee drink? I'm sold). The free wi-fi is more or less a way to keep up with the Portland food service Joneses, but I'm not complaining. Most impressive, though, is the physical space the front doors welcome customers into. It's well-lit but tastefully dimmed, and a side hallway leads into a narrow corridor accented by chairs and booths on the left side. The right side of this whimsical cavern resembles a mirror (second note to self: expound on the metaphysical/existential explication of "resembling a mirror" later), as the view through the square holes in the wall expose an adjacent room set up near-entirely like the one you first walked through. Customers play chess with boards set on the "ledges" of the windows. Pretty sweet. Overall, it's an enjoyable place that offers a unique space in which to hang. read more

The soundtrack was killer. I stayed 10 minutes longer than I needed to, just to listen to some more songs. The tea was middle of the road black tea. Some of the outlets don't work. Some of the patrons were out of the DSM4, and not in a charming way, in an intrusive and concerning way. The barista was very friendly. I really liked this place, so much that I searched for it again. After a few misses I managed to find it. I like a cafe that's a bit dark & 'pokey' where you can hide away and get some work done in peace. The espresso was very good and the food options were tasty & pretty healthy. But best of all it reminds me of some of my favorite cafes in Belgrade - but without the choking cigarette smoke and dark & seedy mafia characters! What an unfortunate name for such an other-worldly coffee shop! The atmosphere of this place is like being immediately transported back to old England. It's like an underground library/den where at every dark, mysterious corner, a scholar or writer can be found, deep in thought and working towards the completion of his or her masterpiece for hours on end. Okay, so maybe that's far from how it really is, and more like the image they like to portray, but I still find this place to be intellectually stimulating. If only I lived here, I can imagine myself reading all my books from Powell's here, doing all my business work here, holding long conversations deep into the night with my friends here, meeting first dates for coffee here, basically being a regular here, and never seeing the light of day otherwise. In my book, it's always time for Coffee Time. The coffee isn't always something to write home about, but the atmosphere itself is a comforting shade of sunlight and local flavor. This is a neighborhood coffee shop. This is not a corporate java joint. You might feel a little bit like you're intruding upon a load of locals for a second, but order up a bagel and a drink and you're transported into their world. Regulars sitting at chairs outside and furiously working internetters being wrapped in the indoor plant matter flowing over the front booths give this place a homey feel. The back section is dark and inviting, and during the arctic blasts, it's a prime place to relax on a sofa and defrost. I've been here with numerous people over the years and have always had fond memories, but now that I can treat it as a local coffee stop, I can truly appreciate the genuinely friendly service and feel. Don't shake your fist at the visitors and the tourists, because I am one of them, reformed. read more

I enjoy coffee time as a study spot. Don't let the swarms of people, some being homeless ward you off. It's a good spot to delve into hours of homework or simply reading a book. It's always heavily crowded but not too loud. They have a decent menu of coffee, teas and light sustenance. After living here a bit longer and trying more coffee places in Portland I had to knock off a star. The coffee just isn't up to par with stumptown. And cash only? I'm a college student. I never have cash on me. And I don't take kindly to having to pay $5 if I want to use my card when all I want is a $2 coffee. The wi-fi is free but I use my clear wireless. I think this is good because every time I'm here people are complaining about it not working right. The upsides? The atmosphere is still great. There are tons of places to sit (chairs, couches, and tables)... so you can really hang out for a long time and study or chat with friends. Oh- and they use punchcards. For someone who gets coffee a lot it's nice to get that free coffee after ten. read more

Coffee Time is distinguished not by its coffee, not by its pastries, but by its schedule. In college, this was one of the only places to study past midnight. It's open until 4am on weekends, and is often busy at the strangest hours. They don't serve liquor, and it's a popular hangout for high schoolers from places like Lake Oswego, but late at night when all you want is a cup of coffee and a place to sit and talk, it's great. I really enjoyed Coffee Time the first time I visited (last night). There are plenty of rooms, all with their own unique atmospheres. The front room had booths, the hallway had some nice chairs, and the rear rooms had comfy couches and chess tables. The coffee isn't anything to write home about, but this place is more about the social atmosphere and late hours than the beans. However, after tonight's experience with the incredibly rude manager, I can't recommend this place at all. I tried to pay for my coffee with a credit card, but was told that since my coffee cost under $5, I had to pay with cash. I didn't have any cash and was waiting for a friend, so I asked if I could wait for my friend and then pay for both of us with my credit card. The manager rudely brushed me off, saying I had to buy something or leave. Again I tried to pay with my credit card, but the manager refused it. At this point, I pointed out that credit card minimums are actually illegal. The manager said she didn't care, and repeated that I had to pay with cash. Since I didn't have cash, the manager asked me to leave. I can't believe a place with such poor customer service continues stay in business. Suffice to say, I'll be reporting Coffee Time to the credit card companies, and I hope their credit card processing machine gets taken away for breach of contract. read more

I've heard some complain of the coffee, but I've always ordered the mochas, and those are great. Good styles, too: Mexican mocha, Black Forest, White Chocolate... Everything else I've tried was meh, but stick with a mocha, and you'll be set (and then some) :) You'll be set because everything else about the place is a 10---wonderful atmosphere, always packed to the gills with students, geeks, and a pleasantly down-to-earth set; murals cover everything, including the speakeasy-themed back room down a Hobbit-hole-like hallway; great location on NW 21st with outdoor seating; and a bevy of cozy, old-fashioned furniture (couches, chairs, tables, booths, and those crazy in-the-wall chess windows). It's cozy incarnate, with a pretty hoppin' crowd and a unique social scene for anyone with a creative, geeky, or nerdy bone in them. I'd have some very in depth conversations with many walks of life in there about all things sports, games, politics, chess, geography etc.. Portland is a coffee city. As such there are coffee shops of every stripe. Coffee Time is my favorite place in the city to enjoy a relaxing cup while watching the world go by. They have a group of comfortable sidewalk tables and benches that sit facing the foot traffic on NW 21st Ave. There is almost always a lively game of chess at one or two of the outdoor tables. But in cooler weather there is a very comfortable indoor seating area that at first glance is a typical coffee shop, however, if you venture down the hallway past the counter you will discover a warren of brightly lit and uniquely decorated back rooms. The shop itself is great but I found that some of the staff are not necessarily friendly. I can particularly say this about the little Asian kid that works on Sundays, he is super rude. Others, no complaints. Otherwise, I love the fact that the place is open late, has plenty of space, nothing fancy but if you just want to get some work done or just browse this is a good place. A cozy, quirky gem in the heart of Portland's most bougie neighborhood. If you feel entitled to blazing wifi speeds, apologies for things the person working has no control over (spotty internet connection), or general ass kissing, then this is probably not the place for you. KOMBUCHA ON TAP OMG Foxfire teas (so good) Lots of cool booths and nooks and places to sit, very cozy Good service (probably because I'm not a dick to the baristas). Cons: The back rooms are....very smelly Limited/yucky food selection (but it's a coffee shop not a restaurant) Has anyone ever cleaned the bathroom? All in all, this is a pretty rad and comfortable place to hang out, meet friends, read a book, or get some work done. And did I mention Kombucha on tap? OMG. I don't know why anyone would ever refer to this place as a "hipster" joint, the only people I ever see hanging out here are students, chess players, and old dudes. And homeless people. read more

Cheap prices, open late and very chill vibe. Its my favorite coffee shop in the pearl area. The americanos are good as well as the tea. Sometimes it can be loud as groups meet here. I like the cavernous layout of CoffeeTime. I did not realize there was a back until the second time I came here. Comfy couches, large chairs, lots of tables, a reasonable number of power outlets in the working areas. The only reason this doesn't get four stars is because the coffee is average. I am a big fan of Coffeetime, not only is it a neighborhood favorite but it's well known around the city. Late night hours are great for working, studying or just to get away. Seating can be dicey sometimes and you may have to fight or bargin for an outlet. However they have outdoor seating and are very pet friendly. I would have rated them higher however the quality of the coffee often depends on who is working. For example there is one male employee, that refuses to make my drink because "he doesn't know how"... I order a blended caramel latte...Not a difficult drink to make. I stopped in here on my way home from a run because I was cold, hungry (and pressed for time, so I knew that buying breakfast would be the more convenient option), and saw the Mastercard and Visa stickers in the window. The atmosphere itself seemed rather inviting. I ordered a tea and an egg-and-cheese bagel sandwich. They get points for offering several kinds of teas. The sandwich, on the other hand, didn't rock my world. I'm convinced they get their bagels from nearby Portland Bagel Co. (as the bagel was devoid of density and flavor), and I realized after leaving that they put artichokes and roasted red peppers on the sandwich. Now I love artichokes and roasted red peppers, but please disclose on the menu (for anyone who doesn't) that the sandwich comes with these things. read more
