We stumbled in here after a very long hike needing a caffeine fix so we could make it the rest of the way home. The guys behind the counter were so nice, and the lattes were first rate. Even though we drank ours outside, the inside was really cool with an old-time vibe that makes you want to hang out, chat, and drink coffee on a rainy day. And they have beer and wine too!!! How cool is that? Oh, and there's an automatic door, so when your hands are full of coffee cups, you just kind of wave a cup in front of the pad, and the door will open for you! read more

This is probably in my top-5 for coffee shops in the Portland metro area! A little unassuming at first glance, but quaint and surprisingly spacious once you venture further in. They have a few games, which is a fun way to pass the time if you aren't there for work. The absolute BEST part about Coffee Time is how it's open to midnight--so many places close around 4 or 5 pm and sometimes it sucks when you get off work or school wanting to get coffee and hang out only to find that everything is closed. Menu/drink wise, I don't necessarily think they exceed any expectations or blow my mind (ie I've had better coffee/tea elsewhere), but I've never been disappointed with my choices/options! I have yet to try any of their food options, but I like how they source from local places. Baristas are always friendly and quick! Thank you Coffee Time! Will be back soon. :) read more

As a college student, who also works full time, with the occasional late-night clinical shift thrown in, I refuse to give anywhere that closes before 10 PM a 5 star rating. I love that I can get off work at 7 in St. John's, drive across the river, and in 15 minutes be seated and content with coffee in hand to work until late. The coffee isn't as outstanding as other more boutique-y coffee shops but frankly, it doesn't have to be considering the mountain of other positive attributes that Coffee Time has, plus you get a free refill! There is also a variety of seating options which is great. If you feel like sitting in the sunshiney front room you can, or if you've got to really buckle down and get stuff done, the darker back room offers more focused patrons an area in which to do so. The baristas are always nice. Coffee Time will forever be my favorite study spot, and I urge all you night owls and early birds alike to go there! read more

It's not coffee time. If it were coffee time, you would go to one of the many fantastic coffee shops within walking distance. It's social experiment time. The Lloyd center is closed, and you need your fix. It's OK. This is why "coffee time" is still standing. It provides the perfect cover story for your little addiction that truly has nothing to do with caffeine. Kinda like reading playboy "for the articles". We'll all just smile and nod, as we know full well that you don't go to coffee time for the coffee - you go for the experience. The haphazard customer service, the all too intense ninja chess warriors, the strung out "regulars" who mutter the wisdom of Baudrillard and debate all other post-modern parallels and paradoxes.... It is all a part of the charm. The labyrinth that hides behind the counter is mysterious in a way that would remind David Bowie of the babe...and free wi-fi until 2am isn't so bad either. read more

Went here for the first time today. The employees were friendly, and the ambiance was amazing. I came here on a whim with a friend and was so surprised! I thought it was a cute shop and then I realized there was a hallway filled with more seating; and the vibe went from cute to amazing! If you have a day like this, and need a cozy place to relax and enjoy a yummy pastry and coffee, this is the place to come. Still inviting and somehow intoxicating after coming to this hole in the wall coffee shop for over 10 years. I really miss the secret room in the back of the shop, and the darkness that the new recessed lights brighten up. But I guess some people have real work they want to get done. People are idiots. Where else can you get a mug and a refill of coffee for $2.50 and camp out for hours with Scrabble, chess, or a laptop until midnight? It's convenient. It's accessible. It's unassuming. It's what every coffee shop should be. I don't know why this place has a low rating. Maybe a latte wasn't orgasmic or the music wasn't 90s hip-hop. First time stopping in today and both the barista on bar and at the register greeted me as I walked in and asked if I needed any help. Took a second to get myself acquainted with the menu and then realized they had lavender so I went for a lavender latte. Really delicious and the barista on bar did some great latte art. As a barista who can't really do latte art I appreciate that and thought that was cool. I'd definitely come back to hang out in the lobby or the outside tables in the future and try out different drinks and maybe a pastry next time. So you should know first that I'm an old school-vamipre/night owl.....they stay open late 3 nights out of the week so I'm feeling this place! Deceptively large, lots of wood and a 1930s style interior with the front half occupied by two very large booths on the left as you walk in and several tables inside on the right lined adjacent to another wooden bench. Benches are full of chess players, serious chess players of all ages and people of every persuasion. Plenty of regulars in the back doing work, uploading music, checking F-book etc. Interesting characters who do their own thing and bother no one (its a refuge for everyone from yuppies to the homeless). Not all is wonderful in coffee-time-land however..... Recently they've fallen into the nasty habit of nickel-and-diming customers to save a buck and the recently hired baristas are indistinguishable from your average Starbucks employee. A little too cynical and a bit too close to silly rules & regulation imposed by "management." Additionally the coffee has fallen off a bit and the pastries always look a bit old. Nevertheless, with a little attention to detail, a little distance away from penny pinching and improvement in the coffee and training of their baristas this could be a 4 or 5 star place waiting to happen. It would be closer to that now if they chose to close every night at 2am or 3am and pay a little closer attention to the bathroom (kind of gets raggedy and w/o soap and paper towels often). Generally though, a good place with a varied, extremely diverse clientele, acceptable coffee, and free internet for purchases (w/o time limits!!!!)!!! read more

This place was great in its simplicity. I can't speak for its variety of coffees or foods because I only had a drip. What I can speak for was its vibe. My group and I popped in here to escape the rain and have some conversation and for this purpose it was perfect. The whole place is very chill and calm. In the front it feels bright and has plenty of light, while in the back is dark and warm so whatever feel you're looking for can be found here. Coffee was delicious and they offer a free refill which fueled even longer conversation. This place was exactly what we were looking for this rainy afternoon. read more

When I moved to this neighborhood Coffee Time was a dump. I went anyway, because it was open super late and not a bar. Then I got sick of feeling like I needed a shower every time I left, so I stopped going for a while. A year or two ago now, CT cleaned up its act. It's cleaner, the counter is tidy, and they have set hours. The bathroom is still disgusting if you ask me, and Water Ave coffee isn't my favorite, but they have Petunia's GF/vegan treats in addition to their regular baked goods and some more food offerings. I have gotten a number of weird tasting dirty chais here...not sure what that's about, but I keep going back and usually stick to kombucha (on tap!) or iced americanos. Staff is friendly and there are lots of little nooks to sit in. Beware: many people on computers studying and/or working for hours on end, so it can be hard to get a place to sit if there are more than two in your party. I wish they were still open past midnight, but I'll take the change with its associated positive influence. read more

And also, I guess coffee goes there too. Where your mouth is. You get it. They took it on the chin thanks to some flooding damage this winter but they're STILL HERE. In a city lined with coffee shops charging $5 for watered-down bull and close at 6PM sharp, COFFEE TIME is open LATE w/ a free house refill waiting, and tons of open space dotted with quirky characters being the coffee shop of your dreams. As the Beastie Boys once said: Writers, prize fighters, Wall St. traders...they'd all be at home here. Are you out your mind, Portland? If you follow my check ins you will see that I'm here 3-5 times a week. This spot is awesome and has seating that most anyone will like. There's the dark bat cave in the back. The semi well lit middle area tucked back alcove up front seats where u can hear the music and even outdoor seating. They have amazing customer service great coffee great food and are all around awesome. They have the for here cups with a refill for the drip. Doesn't matter who's working the counter the service is always consistent. Love this place read more

I probably spend more time here than my own apartment. Chilled-out vibe with good music and muted lighting, plenty of table space. There are outlets for laptop chargers accessible from pretty much every table. Super nice baristas with rotating kombucha taps and a legit food menu. All this on top of late night-hours, it doesn't get much better for a study spot. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops in Portland. Worth going out of the way for (as long as you don't need parking.) I spend a lot of time working out of coffee shops. Since I try to vary shops and scenery, I've spent a lot of time in 30 - 40 area shops. Coffee Time does a lot of things right. Tied for most important: - Their barista's are always really nice and set a wonderful tone. - They know coffee. They don't ask me silly questions like, do I want room for cream in my honey roasted Costa Rican pour over. /coffeesnob It's great coffee, served in an unpretentious, laid back atmosphere. The shop itself has four different spaces, each with a slightly different feel. You can mix it up if you want a light and lively area or a dark, library like work spot. I'm always amazed that so few coffee shops are open in the evening for studying, community meetings or socializing. Coffee Time sets the perfect vibe for a daytime or evening hang out or work space. What would earn it that elusive fifth star in my rating? More comfortable chairs. There are a couple of soft easy chairs. But most of the seats are uncomfortable hard wood butt killers. They have a seat back, which is nice. But overall, they're just night comfortable. Don't let that stop you from coming, though! read more

This place is larger than the first impression would suggest, additional seating in the back. My favorite things about Coffee Time, in no particular order (I spend a lot of my time in this place, so I can write a book-length review without feeling like an overblown prat): 1. Open late! When I am walking home on Thursday nights I can hear some drunk guy singing "Friends in Low Places" inside the Gypsy. As I do not have an escort, this makes me feel safe. 2. Close by! But far enough of a walk that I feel like I'm getting a little jolt of exercise and fresh air before sitting indoors for two-plus hours. 3. NW 21st is one of the most underrated "street neighborhoods" in Portland. Due to its proximity to NW 23rd, it gets unfairly lumped together in that yuppie-gift shop Pottery Barn-Kaboodley reputation. I like to compare the two streets to fraternal twins at high school. 21st wants so badly to be different than its more popular, clean-cut counterpart, and with places like Cinema 21, Cannibals, Nature's Pet, Pope House, and Coffee Time, it is - in the best possible way. 4. Due diligence! All the regulars work hard, thereby increasing the productivity of those around them. PSU is all up in here! I used to do my artwork in bars because they were the only places open that late, but too many people in bars are having so much fun and I feel uncomfortable and socially inferior in my loner workaholic skin. At Coffee Time, focused yet awkward loners rule! If you are on a picture-perfect cute coffee date or chatting with your fabulous girlfriends, you're out of place. Check your phone - you probably have about 50 messages and are booked for months. You don't belong at Coffee Time, so fly away, social butterfly. 5. I feel way smarter when there are people playing Scrabble and Chess around me! Any other game is not that contagious, although Coffee Time does have a big "game shelf" in the back filled with charming oddities from when we were kids. One time a hipster couple was about to start playing the classic board game Clue, but they didn't have enough room to set up the board and the spoiled hipster girlfriend kept glaring at me because I had a table all to myself. Um, you honestly think I'm gonna give up my table and the budding work of art upon it? Yeah, right! Hipster couples playing Clue is too much. Take your sense of irony someplace else. 6. Fill up the tip jar, Coffee Time staff have to put up with a lot, especially at night when there are jerks like me hanging around. Usually there is only one person working, so be patient if you have to wait. Go play with your phone or think about what happens when you die or something. 7. The bathroom! It really doesn't get any better than this. Other bathroom graffiti collections around Portland aspire to this level, but Coffee Time's bano looks (and smells!) way more authentic. The "key spoon" system for getting into the bathroom is genius, though sometimes I lock the key in the bathroom...doh! 8. Coffee Time accepts those with very strange hobbies. For example, I like to cut up colored paper and paste it in intricate designs. Some people stop and compliment; others look at me like I'm a freak - I don't really care because I am focused on my craft. Another regular appears to be taking apart and putting together various machines. I don't know - I just let him work. Sure, there are plenty of laptops taking advantage of the free wi-fi, but you also get some diversity. And all this diversity is working hard (see #4) into the late hours (See #1)! 9. The mural. Sometimes I am in awe, sometimes I want to paint something...anything...over it. Sometimes I wish the walls looked like the bathroom walls! 10. You'll notice there's not a list item that describes the coffee. It's not because the coffee is bad - it's just that I've grown spoiled and accustomed (and addicted!) to the supreme brew I enjoy on a regular basis at such establishments as Stumptown, Crema, and CoffeeHouse NW. However, in terms of character and ambience, Coffee Time compensates for what these crack-brew establishments lack, and ultimately, this is what keeps me coming back. read more

I doubt I would have ever come in here except for the fact that I don't have Internet at the moment and moved to a place a block away from the CT. So here I am. It's a little hobbit cave, a dash of furry feet, and a whole lot of crazy. I was supposed to be getting some serious Internet action work time done, but instead I found myself drawn to the window action outside. You could easily kill two hours just staring out at the window admiring the crazies. My favorite was the guy with a Keystone Light wandering around yelling, "Everything is blue!" I've felt that way myself. The coffee was decent, I have my eye on the floral-flavored lattes next time (Rose, lavender, violet) and the pastries looked good, too. Personally, I thought the barista had some 'tude, but I guess that's to be expected. At least she played Air and not Jack Johnson. That, my friends, would be a deal-breaker. Get a "serious slurper" card if you expect to come here often. And quite frankly, the back labyrinth area scared me. Don't go there alone unless you want to get lost and wake up three days later in a dark cave with goblins. read more

Bad coffee in Portland is probably up there with the Seven Deadly Sins, and people in P-town are a lot less tolerant of bad brew than they are envy or greed. Which is why I do not understand why Coffee Time has been around for so long. We popped in here before an appointment, not knowing anything about it other than it has been around a while. The barista wasn't quite rude, but had this "are you really going to make me work?" kind of attitude. The iced latte I ordered was weak, watery, and I don't think she even pulled a shot. (Old shots sitting around, could that be possible?) The muffin was wrapped in plastic and was STILL stale, dry, and flavorless. The atmosphere just made me think "wow, whoever owns this place has given up." Kinda dirty, bad juju, and just generally an unfriendly vibe. Bathroom was out of soap. We beat it after about 5 minutes, and threw most of our muffin and drinks away. I really would have preferred McStarbucks, which is quite sad. read more

This place is great. The staff are cute, friendly, and nice. Most inexpensive hemp milk latte I've found in Portland so far, inexpensive but really good. I come here to study for hours at a time. There's almost always a place to sit, which is nice. I only dock one star because some questionable/drunk folk seem to hang out in and around the place at night, but to be expected with such late night hours. The place itself is quite big and the wifi covers every room; you can usually find some neighborhood locals playing a game of chess or hanging out. Their music choice is excellent, on the mellow side, nothing too noisy. Their extended hours make this place ideal for students trying to put the "study" in time.. The coffee and atmosphere are both first rate. There's a Starbucks a couple of blocks away which just makes me want to LOL. Why would I waste my time or money at Starbucks (getting coffee that's only half as good) when I could be here enjoying the ambiance? The tables out front are great for people-watching, the customer service is on-point, and the back room (and murals) are worth the stopover. Plus: Having been a part of the Nob Hill community (since about 1995) Coffee Time is a legitimate part of the (Pre-Invasion) Portland culture. Only 4 stars as the number of Homeless using free Wi-Fi and clustering out front is higher than I paticularly fancy in a Coffee Shop. read more

I go here all the time and have always had a positive experience until today. Coffee Time is a popular place for neighborhood residents to go and get work done online. I went in for that purpose today around lunchtime. With my computer bag in tow, I ordered a kombucha and settled in the back to get online and take care of some work. The Internet wasn't working, and the person seated next to me said he was unable to connect all afternoon. I asked the barista about it, and she said everyone had been having problems with the Internet and that she would try to reset the router again. Several minutes later, the Internet was still not working, so I packed up to go to another coffee shop down the street. I stopped by the counter to ask the barista if she could let customers know before they order the next time the Internet isn't working so they don't have to pay again at another shop to get online. She responded with an attitude that the problem just came to her attention so there was nothing she could do about it. No apology or even an ounce of pleasantness. I responded that she didn't need to be rude about it but that it would just be helpful for customers to know, especially since she indicated before that everyone had been having problems with the Internet. She rolled her eyes and reiterated that she had no control over it. I told her I had never experienced a bad attitude like that before at Coffee Time. She said, "Neither have I. Don't come back." It seems many Portlanders have somehow "outgrown" Coffee Time, and are made because it is too hippie or hobbity or whatever. Which it probably is, for some people, because if I ever were to organize a massive Portland LARP scavenger hunt quest game, I would definitely try to convince the baristas at Coffee Time to hold some kind of magical talisman. What makes me give them five stars is that I'm 100% sure they would do it. The coffee is suitable, ditto the baked goods. The atmosphere is what Coffee Time is all about. It reminds me of the Portland I loved as a kid growing up in Oregon - whimsical, laid back, unapologetically quirky, artistic, without a trace of the condescending attitude that has now poisoned so much of my beloved city. Over the years I've been known to stop in this place every once in awhile, but I never get the pull to ever come back. When I line up the thing I love about Coffee Time and the things I hate, it's a waffling battle to say which way I lean. So I'll just itemize this review: What I like: -Open late (like 2:30 am, whoa!) -Way chill to hang out at. -Tons of chess tables (I love when people play chess in public) -Live Bands -Free Wi-Fi -Heated and covered outdoor seating -Good specially-roasted coffee What I don't like: -I can't get my coffee in the morning because they're too slow. -Starting your day with a grumpy barista is the worst -Seating is somewhat uncomfortable -Slow service -Tends to be on the dirty side -What's with the gas station-like bathroom key that you have to wait for? So all-in-all I save Coffee Time for late night hangouts because it's so laid back and easy to talk with friends without it getting too noisy. I avoid Coffee Time in the mornings because I'm usually in a hurry and I've always felt like I was inconveniencing the person at the counter. read more

A little unsuspecting storefront. You'll think it is hum-drum but venture in a little farther and you will find that it is kind of cavernous coffee house reminiscent of your days in college. A number of rooms. This place is bigger than it looks. Many tables miss matched chairs sofas and boardgames. I feel like I am 20 again. The coffee is delightful and I highly recommend adding lavender syrup to what ever you are going to order. The gent at the counter was very friendly and sociable. He also had a kickn' playlist and would love to have a run down of the tuneage. Local patrons of the business contribute to the artwork. They also have 40's gangster murals in the back. The crowd is mixed as it should be. All ages and demographics sipping their mocha's through out. I will be happy to return. Liked it! read more

It's good enough, for when you need to get a coffee and don't have time to walk down to Ken's Bakery. Nothing horrific, nothing spectacular. The beans (Panache, I think they use) are a little over-roasted, as is often the case for roasters who think "strong" means "good" coffee. The espresso drinks I've had were on par with Starbucks or a drive-through coffee cart: the espresso shots a little burnt and the milk hot with bubbles on top, but not truly foamed. Definitely not loads of barista skill, here. The drip coffee is OK, with that same over-roasted thing happening. I can *not* avoid sweetener with Coffee Time's coffee, the way I can at Ken's down the street, or just about anywhere that uses Stumptown beans. The staff are nice enough, but the service not spectacular. It's extremely, extremely slow even to get a simple drip coffee. The counter staff does not multitask, or ask the person sweeping to come help, when there is a line. I could walk the extra several blocks down to Ken's, get through their massively long line, and still get on my bus earlier than when I go to Coffee Time with *one* customer in front of me. (and, I often do just that). The atmosphere is great, with cozy funky booths and other great seating inside and out. The bigoted former post about homeless people patronizing Coffee Time ... Well, c'mon. They are human beings, this is a city, and what do you want -- for Coffee Time to refuse to do business with people who are less fortunate? I walk by Coffee Time just about every day, and yes there is usually one destitute person sitting at an end table outside. If you can't deal with humanity, choose a different table. I'd probably choose Coffee Time as a place to meet someone and chat, because it is quieter than other options in the neighborhood, and promotes lingering and chatting. Not the place I'd go to grab a quick coffee, or to get a *good* coffee or espresso drink. read more
