The food is good IF they happen to feel like honoring your reservation or letting you order takeout as promised. However, we won't bother again. Why not? In short, they managed to ruin plans for TWO different birthday celebrations in our family in the past 2 years. On a third occasion -- our anniversary -- they actually allowed us to eat (with a reservation) and that experience was merely OK. Here's what happened. Event 1: birthday for my wife. We made a reservation well in advance. Yet a couple of days before, they called to cancel it in order to serve a wedding party that wanted the whole restaurant. It was too late to get reservations at our other preferred restaurant. Lesson 1: they will give your reservation to anyone with more money. Event 2: our anniversary. They honored our reservation (on a Sunday) and dinner was excellent. Well, it WAS excellent until they seated another group next to us with EXTREMELY strong cologne and perfume. That rendered our $160 bottle of wine useless and made dessert tasteless. They should have seated those folks farther away (the restaurant was not busy) or outside. Lesson 2: they don't care about your experience or whether you actually enjoy their food and wine. Event 3: our daughter's birthday. She was excited for her BF to have such fancy food and prix fixe for the first time. This was during Covid times and they offered takeout, so we called the day before to ensure that they would be able to do prix fixe takeouts for 4 people on the following day. They said sure, no problem, just call tomorrow. However, when we called the next day, they said they were too busy and wouldn't do takeout! I noted that they had agreed the day before, but they didn't care. Lesson 3: they don't care what they've told you (see Lesson 1). Bottom line: they might serve you ... unless someone with more money wants service, or unless they feel too busy. And if they do, the food might be good (based on 1 out of 3 attempts), yet you will be at the mercy of their tiny dining room and other guests. Recommendation: they should honor their reservations, or at least give folks an apology when you let them down. Personally, we won't try again. read more

SUCKED! I had great, great hopes for this restaurant. They have maybe 10 tables. Made reservations the day before we planned to eat there, and got 7:15 reso's for 3. We were on time, seated promptly, and given.....water. Ordered wine....and the offerings by the glass were excellent...they were out of my first choice however, which never bodes well. I ordered the scallop appetizer. It showed up in 15 minutes.....two acceptably seared scallops with not enough bacon/mushrooms to compliment the flavors...strike one. We had to ask for bread multiple times....strike two....the slices kept getting thinner by the third basket of bread(about 8 pieces) the slices were more like crackers than pieces of bread. It took OVER an hour to get our entrees...strike three.....my mother ordered the vegetarian stuffed peppers, and promptly pronounced them tasteless. SWMBO, ordered the Jidori Chik'n and loved it..... I got the King Salmon.....it was overcooked.....that is a crime against all that is Holy. The carrots were good/great...there were two slices. I sub'd the mashed potatoes because the dish came with pasta and I cannot eat it. There was a bed of chopped/slimy/under seasoned zucchini....I left it on the plate. We did not have dessert, which they tout as made in house....walked down the street for ice cream on the waterfront. Coho has a HUGE page in the local Yellow Pages, and it caught my eye, and for that, there is MASSIVE discontent.....the best thing that could happen to this restaurant is to go out of business so the chef can take it somewhere else, and work on his craft, which is sorely in need of it. This place is expensive, pretentious and vastly in need of SOMEONE who can do a good job....the space itself is just fine, and could really be awesome given the right opportunity. read more

AMAZING! Anna Maria and staff are simply wonderful. My husband and I chose to have our wedding luncheon at Coho with about 30 people. From the get go, Anna Maria was incredibly communicative and knowledgeable. Since we live in Seattle, we had to coordinate almost everything remotely, but that was not an issue at all. Coho is dedicated to in season, locally sourced food and their knowledge of cuisine and artistry really shines through. As a bride, I felt a bit stressed when thinking about planning a luncheon, but Anna Maria guided me through it beautifully, pointing out things and asking questions about stuff I would have completely missed. The day of our luncheon was fabulous as well. All her staff and servers were absolute professionals and the lunch was to die for. They graciously accommodate several of our guests food allergies and preferences, going so far as to make sure that my mother in law had a gluten free, egg and dairy free cake that was similar to the wedding cake so that she wouldn't feel like she was missing out. She made an INCREDIBLE wedding cake with fresh flowers that all my guests are still talking about months later. Coho will become our spot to go back and celebrate our anniversary for years to come. Came here for dinner on a summer Friday (yes I know... posting this review a little late) and had a wonderful meal. We loved the staff and our food. To start, my mom had what was essentially a lavendar kir royale with lavendar liquor from Palendabra farm and champagne. Then we all split one of their special salads which had figs, toasted almonds, and arugula. The dressing was light and fresh. My boyfriend chose to have the Spanish Octopus appetizer ($15) for his main course. This grilled octopus was perfectly cooked; tender but which a slight char from the grill. The romesco, aioli, crispy potatoes, and pickled carrots were delicious accompaniments. We all loved it and I highly recommend people trying it. My dad ordered the duck confit ($34) which was served with stone fruit. It was very well executed with flavorful meat and bright, flavorful sides. I ordered the quinoa & farro paella ($28) which had a delicious al dente mouthfeel and was served with fresh summer squash, corn, tomato, heirloom beans, and a perfect soft boiled egg. I enjoyed it a lot. My mom had the market fish and it was perfectly prepared. For dessert, we got their last slice of blackberry cheesecake, chocolate mousse, and a valencia orange cake. I liked the chocolate mousse best, but my mom and boyfriend both liked the orange cake. Our service was super friendly and as you can tell we loved all of our food. We almost considered come back to this restaurant for a second meal during our long weekend, and I think it would have been a good choice. The only better meal we had was at Duck Soup. Had a reservation for a Tuesday evening. We were seated at a table that was literally 18 inches from the bathroom door . If the person leaving the bathroom left the door open one of us would be looking at the toilet. There were other empty tables so we asked to be moved. A few minutes later the hostess returned and said we could not move to one of the empty tables so we left. I can say without a doubt this is the best meal that I had in the San Juans. Despite the fact that they are a bit overpriced for the portion sizes, the food was amazing and flavorful, and the service was friendly and attentive. Had the seafood trio, which was lobster, shrimp and scallops on cannellini bean ragout with saffron seafood nage, shiitake mushrooms and broccolini. Isn't your mouth just watering already at that genius combination?! The lobster was quite possibly the best I've ever had. The scallops, I swear they almost melted in my mouth. The shrimp wasn't bad, but I would've expected larger, more flavorful prawns for the price. The ragout combination was the perfect light but bursting-with-flavor finisher for the dish. We also got bread with our meal, and they have a really nice drink selection at Coho as well. We actually had heard better things about the Backdoor Kitchen in Friday Harbor, but when we compared the menus and pricing, it's clear Coho has the advantage and should be your place to splurge while on San Juan Island. read more

Very disappointing. I usually live this restaurant. Food and service are usually excellent. But not tonight. Took over 20 minutes to get our drinks. Back in my day, they would have been comp'd. Not the case. After we finished our meal, our server asked if we would like dessert. I said yes, a sundae and another couple drinks. She said great! Five minutes later, she came back and said the kitchen and bar were closed and they were taking no more orders. It was 8:21 pm. Everything about this place was perfect. The cozy atmosphere, the aroma, our friendly and funny server. The food was unbelievable. As a vegetarian it's not hard for me to get a good meal, but it is hard for me to find something new an inventive. Went there for Valentine's Day and they had a lovely set up and menu! They even gave us flowers and cookies to go. Very thoughtful restaurant with an owner who obviously cares! The food was good but I missed out on the delicious looking pasta course because they don't offer gluten free pasta. I really wish they would, especially for those of us who are not gluten free by choice. Either way, I will return again. PS. Leave the kids and infants at home. Three of us, all locals, went to Coho Sunday. evening for dinner. I've been going since it opened but I'm not going back. I understand how difficult it is to get capable wait staff but the service was below average by any measure. The entree was adequate but the final straw was when we asked for bread and the waitress said it would be an addition cost of $5. Over the years they have increased prices regularly so it has gotten too expensive for me. I did not see any locals there Sunday evening and I'm not surprised. I'll turn it over to the tourist. I would love to give this restaurant a higher rating. I am a foodie and felt that the wine for archipelago was great, the food was a bit light on portion (still hungry) and a bit daring for my taste (chicken feet. . .). One of my husband and myself favorite things to do when we go on vacation is to find good restaurants. We had our whole trip booked and my husband's 45th birthday we were schedule to eat at Duck Soup. But, the head chef of Coho, Samantha Dechristopher, offered to come and cook for us on his birthday. We gave her some money in advanced and kept in touch via text. The day of his birthday she said she would be there around 7:30 PM. We text with her throughout the day joking with the family that she might not show, but immediately saying no one would do that to someone on their birthday. 8:00 PM rolled around and she text us that she was running late, our reservation at Duck Soup was at 8:00 PM so we were now committed to this new plan of Samantha Dechristopher making birthday dinner. She texted at 9:56 PM she said she was still stuck at the restaurant "for a hot minute" (the restaurant is not open on Sundays) At 11:00 PM when we sent a text to her saying Are you not coming? She had shut her phone off. Our elderly parents and party of eight went to bed hungry. My husband did not get a birthday dinner/dessert. On San Juan Island everything closes by 9:00 PM, there is not a single grocery store or gas station etc to get food. Coho's head chef, Samantha Dechristopher is a flake and if I owned the restaurant I would not continue to employee someone who treats clients so unprofessionally. read more

I was here for their six-course dinner with wine pairings on New Year's Eve. It was a small house that was converted into a restaurant, almost too small -- and really, a little too bright -- that it didn't feel like one could have much intimacy or privacy at all. We were seated close to the door that led to both the coat closet and the bathroom and felt like my fiancé and I had to adjust our seating every time someone wanted to get in there. It was slightly uncomfortable. Dinner was $70 per person, plus $35 for wine pairings. Food and service was excellent from beginning to end. Every course was crafted thoughtfully and very well-executed. I remember everything I ate because it was all memorable, seriously. The amuse-bouche of seared hamachi with blood orange and shallot dressing was superb. The harmony of briny, acidic, and sweet was amazing in this tiny appetizer and definitely enticed my palate for more. My first course was a black truffle risotto -- always hard to pass up in my world, of course, but again, it was exquisitely done. My fiancé got the foie gras torchon for his first, and I didn't get to try it, but he enjoyed it thoroughly. We both got some delicious squash soup with a simple salad of greens with vinaigrette next, and atop the salad was a Brie en croute, which I obsessed about for a while. I thought this would be my least favorite course, but I really loved how everything came together, apart from that I'm pathetically in love with Brie. For our entreés, we both picked the pan-seared rack of lamb, which we thought was divinely cooked and flavored but a little bit on the stingy side. They could've given a bigger portion, especially for the price. Finally, for dessert, he got a chocolate torte, and I selected an eggnog cheesecake. I've never been an eggnog fan, but this cheesecake was probably the best I've had in Washington State. It was so delicious, the sweetness subtle enough to keep me coming back for more. I ate it all. The chocolate torte was good, too, but a lot richer and got a little overwhelming afterwards I thought it was awesome that they sent us off with little gift boxes of cute gourmet chocolate afterwards, too. One thing they can definitely improve on is the ambience of the place. I expected it to be a lot more romantic before I got there. The potential is there, though -- it just needs a little bit of work and imagination. Lowering the lighting a bit might be a good start. read more

We had dinner at the restaurant last night. It was good enough that I would definitely go again, but there is room for improvement. My partner said he'd give it a score of 6 out of 10, and I agreed. That's a good score for a restaurant that is improving, but it's not a good score for a restaurant that has plateaued. I think this restaurant is in the former category. The good: The amuse bouche of halibut and cucumber with edible flower was lovely. The bread basket, with three kinds of bread, including a fantastic square biscuit and brioche rolls, was unparalleled in my experience. The duck breast was prepared perfectly. They have a Wine Spectator award for having one of the best wine lists in the world, and I've never seen as good a list of NON-alcoholic drinks, including pomegranate, rhubarb, ginger, and lemongrass sodas. They specialize in locally sourced food. Lovely glassware and cutlery. Needs improvement: The "medium" steak was rare. The green beans needed to be cooked for another minute or so. The "maple creme caramel" was creme brulee, and didn't taste of maple at all. One of the proprietors sprayed the table next to us with lavender cleaner while we were eating. If a glass-top table needs cleaning, the cloth should be sprayed outside the dining room. The proprietors clearly have their heart in this, and that made up for any lacks. read more

We are very choosy diners. If we are going to pay $35 for an entree, it had better be something special. That being said, this was both one of our favorite meals. The meal started with an amuse bouche of hummus and grilled zucchini. This was heavy handed with the hummus and we thought it edible, but barely so. Next we ordered a special starter of poached shrimp with smoky pancetta, microgreens, heirloom tomatoes, and subtle creamy sauce. The flavors were light, fresh, and perfectly underhanded with the seasoning. We both ordered the crab stuffed rainbow trout. This is where the magic happened. With each bite, I was in heaven. The fish was perfectly done and prepared, the crab portion was significant. Most chefs would cover this in some sort of heavy cream sauce or maybe a pesto or such, but this was simply seasoned and rich on its own accord. The chef shows great restraint in seasoning to allow the fresh ingredients to be the star, seasoning to enhance but not overpower. This is the mark of a great chef. Dessert was a soft, not-too-sweet valencia orange cake. We paired this with a glass of cognac which tasted like they were meant to be together. The cake was moist and soft. My only complaint is the server asked for our food order before asking for our drink order. We enjoyed a starter glass of my favorite inexpensive bubbles from Domaine Delmas, and had a bottle of the Tranche Pinot Gris with our fish. The wine list is impressive and there are good options at lower price points as well as high. We even got to talk to the chef at the end. This was a highlight for us because we are such foodies, and this really was one the best meals. I don't give out five stars often because most places please me, but Coho exceeded my expectations. Bravo. Reservations are a must here. Request a window table if you like. You might get lucky on a weeknight, but don't count on it. This is fine dining in an intimate setting. Be patient. Don't expect your food to be brought out in a moment's notice. If it's prepared fresh, it takes a bit to cook it to order. This is a small restaurant with a smallish menu. This means the restaurant takes pride in making a few things very well, not a giant Olive Garden menu where everything is frozen and warmed up as you order it. Fine dining should be an experience. This is some of the best I've ever experienced. If you don't want to have a fine dining experience, try another place. read more

From the minute I booked our reservation I knew I would love this place! I got such a friendly response from the owner Anna Maria! We had dinner here on new years day. When we first walked in it was extremely quiet and there was only one other table of customers. Super cute space though with a very cozy feel. We were sat quickly and the waiter was very friendly. I was happy to hear the other customers ranting and raving over their food! Soon we ordered, we had the winter salad (which was a special) Very flavorful and a perfect portion to share. For entrees I had the duck, and my fiance had the venison. Both were amazing!!!! Cooked perfectly and the sweet potatoes that came with my duck were out of this world! I also had a fantastic glass of wine that really made the whole meal come together. We shared the hazelnut chocolate mouse for desert which I couldn't stop eating! They offered to fully customize our meals based on preferences, and, although they don't have a kids menu, offered to turn anything on the menu into a kid's meal. We ordered off the 2 for $70 menu and were very happy with the restaurant. The service was good, and the food ranged from so-so to AWESOME. The bread they serve is like a mini croissant, awesome, 5*. They started out by serving some kind of salmon spread (complimentary). Then you get soup (crab bisque 5* - not too salty, not too creamy, usually my standard concerns with bisques) and salad (just a regular mixed green salad, a bit heavy on the arugula for some people's taste probably). I had the chicken (4*, breast piece was really moist and tender, thigh piece was surprisingly not quite as good), my husband had the pasta dish (4*). The meal includes a bottle of wine too. We ordered the $15 cheese plate which came with 6 slivers of 3 types of cheeses, 4 razor thin apple slices, 5 dried cherries, 6 almonds, and a handful of sesame crackers - definitely not worth the price tag. We both ordered the $30 salmon entrees. The fish was tender although my daughter's was on the rare side. We probably wouldn't have come here without the certificate, but even with the discount (taken after the original total plus tax), our tab for 2 with no drinks was $66. Wow! What a place! My wife and I visited while vacationing on San Juan Island. . We started with the pan seared baby artichokes. Main courses were venison with mashed potatoes and greens (best mashed potatoes I've ever had) and the shrimp risotto. All was excellent. We loved the place so much we came back the next morning for Easter morning brunch. Forget the negative reviews about the new ownership. As cranky New Yorkers, our first impression of Coho was "boy, they are so nice!" And they were. David the owner, host, waiter and many other things, greeted us and made us feel immediately welcome. The space is pretty and roomy. As opposed to many other places in Friday Harbor, you don't feel you are in a tourist restaurant. The menu is small, but well chosen. We had clams to start, which were excellent. We also had the beet/avocado salad, which I enjoyed and which my wife enjoyed more. I had the halibut special, which I thought was excellent. Not normally a fan of halibut, I went for it at our server's advice. We also had the duck, which was great. The only thing that failed was a potato layer cake (i am sure it had a real name, but I can't tell you what it was) which was the duck's side. Their dessert with three little plates: a creme brulee, pot chocolate and a tart, was the perfect after dinner thing. There is a good wine list. The crowd is on the older side, as befits a place with $30 entrees. The place was full on Tuesday in August, so calling ahead may not be a bad idea. read more

This is why I love Yelp! I am in Friday Harbor for the first time and I read some reviews of different places for dinner, and Coho seemed to be loved by my fellow "yelpers." So, I decided to give it a try. First things first, you're going to spend a little more here. I ordered the crab cake appetizer, fillet for dinner, and the trio desert, oh and a glass of wine, and it totaled $71(and that's without tip). BUT...you have to remember that when you are getting served high quality food, and local grown food at that, it is going to be more expensive and there is nothing wrong with that (my opinion.) For myself, the two most important things to food are the quality and the "localness." I will pay more for that. With the food being local and high quality, my experience was wonderful! It reminded me that we all need to stop our busy lives and enjoy our food. The crab cakes seemed a tad too much salt (but I am not a salt person), but overall were very good. The fillet mignon was delicious...cooked to perfection (I ordered medium and it was pink and juicy)! The trio desert was three little ramekins. One with dark chocolate mouse, a creme brûlée, and an apple crisp. Each were divine. The overall experience at Coho was memorable enough to make me want to go back and enjoy the ambiance and wonderful food! We made a reservation for the early seating. The restaurant is small so I'm assuming that is why they had to have the windows open( about five inches) because of Covid. It was freezing! We almost left because I thought how I wouldn't enjoy the whole experience. The waitress lowered the window a little bit. I did keep my jacket in the whole time though. It would be nice if the told you that when you made a reservation or offer a lap blanket or space heater? The food and service were great. Wine selection by the glass very limited and what's up with corkage fee of $35? We also were seated by the restroom door, tho fortunately until we were at the end of the meal wasn't a problem. I do not recommend. After dining for a week in the San Juans .... this was my least favorite dining experience. If you are in Friday Harbor- Downriggers is more flavorful. Better yet, go to Orcas Island & eat at the exquisite Inn at Ship Bay where they really know how to do a tasting menu. The Duck Soup Inn has a cozy atmosphere & much better staff & food. Rosario Mansion has mixed reviews online, however, in person the service was excellent & food was flavorful & well portioned. The good: quiet & cozy atmosphere. Apple Crisp with Ice Cream. Valencia Orange Cake. A lovely Oregon selection of wine. The bad: 1)a prix fixe menu that has smaller portions of the first two courses [ the staff informed me ] " so you don't get overfull..." But cost more than if I had ordered each course a la carte. I am not that price sensitive when fine dining [ reference the exquisite chef's tasting I had earlier in the week. ] but ( scratching my head here ) I can add... and I paid more prix fixe...than if I had ordered the ten olives, four tortellini, and two cubes of steak, followed by orange cake each separately. 2) the flavors Olives with some kind of meat were warm as indicated on the menu. Not flavorful. Tortellini were " herbed " in a watery liquid with little flavor & undercooked cubes of (? Root vegetables (?) Beef tenderloin: 1/5 gristle. Not tender [really needed that serrated knife!] Leaf lettuce "purse" with tiny mushrooms was a creative presentation... but again, lacking flavor. Beef portion was 1/2 a deck of card size divided in two 1"x1" cubes. After removing the gristle...hardly a meal. Dessert was redeeming in the flavor department. However, even there, the apple crisp was overloaded with cinnamon. the ugly: " Nathan" was at the desk when we arrived and was downright unpleasant in greeting us. Despite having received a text message confirming our reservation an hour prior saying we were due in the restaurant in an hour... upon arrival we were greeted extremely condescendingly by Nathan who was very rude. He said he had no reservation for us. When I said I called in and received a confirmation text, he demanded: " well who did you talk to?". I had not taken down the women's name and said so, but reiterated that we had received phone confirmation. After being made to feel thoroughly unwelcome... he conceded there was an open table... so they would accommodate us. A lovely woman with pink hair tried admirably to serve us & asked for our name and phone number again " to make sure we got in their system." [ ? We got a text an hour ago... but Ok, thank you for trying to repair the rude first impression] She was an attentive server [ *thank you] unfortunately -given the rude greeting, strange pricing, bland food and scant portions -the experience was a miss. We had a party of 8 girls and at first service was a tad slow & they misprinted their dinner menus so we had to wait a little while but other than that I enjoyed the people, our food, and ambience! Came here for dinner while on our honeymoon in Friday Harbor. Service was amazing, wine selection was amazing (although we went with beer). Beef Tenderloin with potatoes and mixed veggies was AWESOME and delicious. My husband got pan seared halibut which was also excellent and came with corn and quinoa. Our dinner was delicious and the service was outstanding. The location is charming in an old house with an authentic Friday Harbor vibe. We came here to celebrate our second wedding anniversary, and unfortunately we were disappointed. We ordered the fish special(halibut), but sent it back because it was really dry, as was the chicken. They were kind enough to then substitute a salmon entrée, but that was really salty and fishy. The bread is amazing and the ambience is very nice. But we probably wouldn't go back. read more
