Two of us were there on a Friday night. It was moderately busy. We were seated right away. Neither of us wanted meat, cheese or eggs. Typically we can get fajitas or burritos made with veggies. I wanted mostly raw veggies and rice for my burrito. The server wasn't sure what i was asking for so someone else came and assured me I could definitely get whatever I wanted from the kitchen. Stopped for lunch on our way home from up north. Decided on this place because the parking lot was super busy. Figured it must be good. As busy as it was we were able to be seated right away. We quickly realized it was so busy because it was taco Tuesday. I usually don't bother with the Tuesday tacos at any other place because the tacos have been sub par in my opinion but because this place offered $2 street tacos, steak, chicken or Al pastor or $1 ground beef, we decided to try the upgraded street tacos. We got Al pastor and steak. Both Mexican style. WOW, just wow!!! These tacos were terrific. Filled to the brim with delicious meats and toppings. They also came with some delicious sauces. Between the generous serving of complimentary chips and salsa, also delicious, we couldn't even finish the 5 tacos shared between the 2 of us. Our bill with 2 sodas came to $16.88 Although it's about an hour and half away we will definitely make this a stop on our travels and even a little road trip to dine here. Charming little spot. We ordered online and picked it up. We are a family of 5 and all were satisfied with our meals. I had the Philly Burrito (super good), my wife had the carnitas plate that she really liked. My oldest daughter had two beef tacos that she loved. My son and younger daughter had burritos and tamales from the "Sides" menu and they were just ok. Churros were yummy but kind of dense. Chimicheesecake was delish! So I am in fact 21 years old and I had an ID. Apparently the server can't read and so he got mad the second we sat down. I just wanted a simple drink. Couple minutes later he comes back without the drink and gives me a water. Unbelievable. In short he got mad the second that we sat down. He should not be in customer service would be a nice way to put it. He also threatened to call the cops. Within like two minutes of us sitting down. Because he would not give me a drink. I can prove with my valid drivers license I turned 21 last year. 40 minutes later the food comes. Worse than expected. I thought that they would at least cook it through. But they burnt parts of chicken and then undercooked pieces too. There was like no sauce on my mom's dish. She said she's been there many times and it was never like this before. To say that the "service" was bad would be an understatement. It was horrible. Server seated us quickly and then ignored us for 40 minutes. Came back to finally take our orders. Took another 30-40 minutes. Nice... one of the orders for my mom came without sauce. Like she told us she came here for years and it always comes with the cheese sauce. Also hers was extremely spicy. It was never spicy before. So cross contamination?? Maybe not cooking dishes in different cookware? Either way we did not enjoy the experience He didn't not check up on us throughout the whole time we were there until it came time for the check. It's been a while since I've written a bad review, but what a subpar restaurant. The food was bland, cold on arrival and almost watery. We were seated pretty quickly but after the waiter dropped off the food, he only came back to give us the bill. The worst part is that my husband and I both left feeling sick by the time we got home. Pros? Pretty decor, clean facility, plenty of parking, I'll give them that. My recommendation? The obsequious manner of Tolteca employees is one, not to be forgotten.I recommend the Shirley temple. If a bullet was fired toward this elegant drink, I would gladly jump in front of that beauty. ** NEW LOCATION ** La Tolteca of Portage, WI has moved to a new location, but don't panic. The new place is literally almost right across the street from the old location. It has only been open for a few weeks. It still has the same extensive menu, and the staff is just as attentive. The new place is larger, and I estimated it now seats about 100 people, and that doesn't include a sizable room in the back. They've left the Bright/Colorful plastic tables and chairs behind, opting for a more upscale appearance. The lighting has a nice modern look. Today (Thursday, Dec 20, 2018) when I arrived at 2:00 PM for a late lunch, there was one other table occupied. While I was there, four more tables filled up. I ordered a soft-shelled Beef Burrito, an order of Queso Fries, and a Strawberry Margarita. The burrito was a little bland, but that was okay because it let me use the 5 bottles of hot sauce on the table to season it to-taste. The french fries under the toppings were high quality. I thought the prices were fair. The Beef Burrito, platter of fries, and Margarita were all about $7 each. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Mexican food. read more

I swore this place off years ago after the terrible service that we were receiving every single visit. This was the same horrible service in a new location with new staff. Such a disappointment! Our meals were brought to us 10 minutes apart and we had to ask for the side salad that comes with the fajitas. The ribeye was over cooked although it was ordered medium rare. Had to ask for drink refills even though we used the universal sign of placing our empty glasses to the edge of the table. We seemed to even have to beg someone to take our money to pay the bill! My attempt to eat here on Tuesday Tuesday the 22nd of February was my worst dining experience in many years I came into the restaurant for dinner they gave me a drink almost immediately and then nobody looked talked or asked many questions for 40 minutes eventually they did bring me some chips and salsa I sat there another 20 minutes no one looked talked or asked me or asked me any questions So I paid for my drink and left The staff was more interested in playing with their cell phones than taking care of me as a customer I tried to call them. Sweet Maria what a train wreck. I *love* Mexican food and this had to be one of the worst meals of my life. For starters, we were seated in a booth near the kitchen. Next to us was the "staff booth" as we soon found out which had a staff members watching loud youtube videos on their phones and cackling like it was the end of times. They would come and go throughout the meal. Dear God I wish they would focus more on the menu and food than hysterical videos on the Internet. The menu. There are little like 500 items on the menu. So many items it's overwhelming. But I digress... We ordered, hoping they would settle down, which they didn't. Literally about 4 minutes later, my wife's food came out. Alone. I told her to start without me...she was half way done when my food came out which was about 5 minutes later. Who does that? My view into the kitchen I literally watched one of the cooks blow his nose with a napkin, crumple it in his hand, and kept cooking, only to repeat shortly thereafter. In a word, gross. I had ordered what was allegedly a rib-eye steak seasoned with onions with a side of rice and beans. There is no way the steak that came out could be considered a rib-eye. First, half of it was fatty gristle. Secondly, it was the toughest piece of meat I have ever experienced. I literally could not cut it even with the steak knife provided. It felt like they had run it over with a truck, and then backed over it for good measure. It was truly awful. The rice and beans were mediocre at best. The salsa was flavorless, and the chips were so-so. I am probably being generous here. It felt like the audition for an episode of Restaurant Impossible. We waited 10 min for a server and finally waved someone down. With no apology she took our order. Got our drinks, forgot some things. Food came. It was ok. She cane to check on us just as we got our food and that was it. I had to hunt her down for boxes and bill. When I found her they were all standing in the kitchen talking. Then while my husband and daughters were in the bathroom I paid the bill. Didn't leave a tip on my card. Thought about leaving a small tip on table until I grabbed my boxes and she flat out asked me "You don't like my service". I politely told no I didn't care for it. Mind you my husband had cash. Best small-town Mexican joint I've been to in Wisconsin! (And not just saying that so my supervisor takes me back here on my lunch break ). We both got the shrimp fajita taco salad and boy was I impressed! La tolteca is very generous with their shrimp portions, especially for the price. Like any Mexican joint, it's easy to fill up on chips and salsa but unlike some, you'll want to save room for the main dish. Friendly staff, bright and festive decor. Friendly staff and extremely fast service! I was immediately served chips and salsa. The chips were stale. Huge menu! I ordered the chicken chimichanga which lacked seasoning and was on the dry side. The portion was small compared to the price. Not a very good value. The guacamole was very tasty but again a very miniscule portion. The condiment tray containing hot sauces, salt, pepper etc. was very off putting. All the bottles were sticky to the touch and obviously hadn't been wiped off in ages.
