Compare Heating & Air installed a heat pump with two zones for our two-story house. Everything from the initial estimate visit to the final city inspection went well. Communication was good, and there were no unexpected surprises. The employees come roughly around the same time and make sure to let you know that they've arrived. They also let you know when they are leaving for the day. The technicians worked hard and addressed any questions that popped up. At the end, an employee made sure that I knew how to operate the thermostat to control both zones. A staff member was present for the city inspection and for an inspection for HERS (Home Energy Rating System). Mark made sure that I had all necessary documentation to apply for a rebate and for another rebate, Mark was able to apply directly for that and forward the rebate to me. A minor question/issue came up after the installation and Mark replied quickly. I feel that they will address any problems. Some companies forget you exist after doing the job, but I don't feel that way with Compare Heating & Air. read more

When our heater quit working, we reached out to the guys who remodeled our kitchen for a solid referral. They recommended Compare Heating. On our schedule day, Danny came out and dropped under the house to look at our situation. He looked at every inch of the unit, from the wires to the housing and connections back to the circuit breaker box. About 30 minutes later, he found the issue - a frayed wire. He replaced the connection with new wire and sealed everything back up. We could not be happier with the customer service, knowledge and know how to find the problem, and reasonable cost to repair. Our furnace died in November 2023. A contractor friend referred us to Compare Heating & Air. They came out and got the heat going, giving us a work around to turn it on and off while they got a new unit ordered. As our AC was not running well we also had it replaced too. Compare did a great job and the cost was definitely as we expected it to be. I'm really glad I found this co years ago in checkbook mag. They've always done good work and reasonable priced. My unit was about 30 years old 1st time they came out. I feel they have my best interest in mind. After that time I never worried they would try to sell me a new system when not necessary. And im on a fixed income so this can be stressful. My furnace had been serviced a couple times over the years. It's long past its prime. They could have tried to sell me new one years back but I wanted to see how long it could go. Finally at about 40 years they suggested replacing. Cost was lot better than I envisioned. Crew are co employees with co many years. We're really nice and worked nicely together. Got job done efficiently/skillfully. As a woman I felt comfortable with them in my home. I've been in my house for 18 years and knew when I moved in that my heater was about 20 years old. For the first time, the heater wouldn't turn on and I pretty much knew that my old heater may need to be replaced. A handyman and PG&E both thought the problem was my control valve and I was quoted around $500-$600 to replace that part. They sent Dustin out to see what the furnace needed. It turned out you're supposed to get this annual tuneups, which I NEVER did in the last 18 years, and who knows if anybody did before I moved in. The unit was just dirty so the flame was being hindered to be big enough to ignite. Dustin told me what I already assumed...that the heater was on borrowed time, but he did not encourage me to buy a new one. Instead he recommended that WHEN something big on it breaks, I should considered replacing it, but in the meantime, keep the old one because it appeared to be working well. He also told me that it is a company policy to try to fix instead of pushing you to buy a new furnace. That a good policy. What this service call did what to make it so now I will: 1) call them for annual tune-up (and ask for Dustin) 2) hire them to replace the furnace when the inevitable eventually happens I am putting them in my address book. When your AC doesn't work and it's been in the mid to upper 90's for a week, you want someone who can come out immediately. Well, we can all dream but there's high demand. I called on a Monday, and there was a technician in our area on Friday, and was able to get a 2-hour window. Dustin came right within the window. He inspected our circa 1988 system and identified the capacitor was broken. He didn't try to upsell anything. He had a new capacitor with him! He was friendly and professional during his visit (even noticed we were a no-shoes-in-house family and removed his without my requesting), and replaced this part in less than 20 minutes. The fixed cost for the visit and the replacement part cost seemed reasonable. He left with me feeling like the problem was solved and for a reasonable price, and gave us a working AC just in time for the long weekend - I didn't feel screwed like I thought I might by an HVAC company who takes advantage of customers' needs during the hot weather. We plan to add a small addition and re-configure our HVAC systems in a couple years. I hope I don't need to call an HVAC company between now and then, but if so, I would call Compare again for sure. Compare HVAC completed the installation of a furnace, air conditioner, and ducts at our house in December 2021. I recommend this company and would use them again. Our existing furnace worked OK but was over 50 years old and was not energy-efficient. I received four bids for this project. Overall, the four bids were similar in price. Most HVAC companies provide a quick checklist bid for the basic equipment. Then you need to figure in all the other add-on costs needed to complete the job such as duct testing, permits and inspections. In contrast the Compare HVAC bid was a thorough descriptive narrative of the work to be done and included all of the costs. I found this to be reassuring. It was easy to see the total project cost and, in fact, there were no "surprises." Compare offered two types of replacement ducts. I chose the cheaper basic ducts rather than the upgrade ducts. I elected to install a two-stage furnace and a two-stage air conditioner due to the higher energy efficiency of these pricier models. Compare recommended the disposable 5" thick expandable filter over the electro-static filter and I went with their recommendation. Once the project had been scheduled, the workers arrived on time and worked steadily to complete the work. On the first day, a subcontractor safely removed all the asbestos from the existing ducts. For the next four days, two guys slithered around in the basement crawl space removing, replacing, and sealing the duct work. Two other guys cut larger holes in the floors to accommodate the larger modern size of duct registers. A fifth guy tinkered with furnace itself and installed the necessary vents and drains. They cleaned the area at the end of each day. We had no heat in the house during the project but we soon got used to the cooler temperature. At the conclusion of the installation an independent inspector came to conduct the HERS duct leak testing. He remarked that he never finds any problems with the ducts installed by Compare. Compare later provided a complete printout of the HERS test results. It was easy to communicate with the onsite workers and with the Compare management. They graciously and patiently answered all my questions. I requested and received the manufacturer certification needed for the federal tax credits that our energy-efficient equipment qualified for. Compare offered to install an earthquake gas shutoff valve for an additional fee. I had them do that too. The new furnace is quiet and keeps our house at a comfortable temperature. Overall, I was very satisfied with the professionalism of Compare HVAC and the success of this project. read more

My 94 year old mom said she was thinking about getting a new air conditioner. Another company with whom she has a " service contract" with a certain company, said her unit was leaking oil and it lead her to believe that her system was failing. Mark came out and determined that not only her A/C unit wasn't leaking but that her unit was in good shape. He didn't charge mom a penny. I am so glad that my mom, on such a limited income, wasn't tricked in to replacing something that didn't need replacing. Compare is a very in demand family owned business and if you suspect that your system might need to be checked out just for preventative care, call them. They are honest and will at least know you before you really need them or can help you prior to when and if your system fails. Five stars is not enough; they deserve more! Last year (2021) our 16 year old, furnace started shutting off and became impossible to restart. A technician from a respected company we used to install central air said it could not be fixed. He said we needed to replace the furnace and was surly when we didn't immediately agree to do so. I found another company that specifically works with our brand of furnace and that technician offered to try installing a new restart button of some sort but said he couldn't be sure it would help; we likely needed a new furnace. We tried the new button, which helped but the furnace continued to shut off intermittently at varying intervals. As the first cold spell hit this winter (2022), not surprisingly, the furnace did not come on and we decided to get a new furnace. It took three calls and almost a week to get the company with the surly technician to call us back for an appointment. In the meantime I got an appointment with another company that works in the Berkeley area and with Compare, who a friend highly recommended. The former sent someone who wrote a proposal for a new furnace. Two days later Dustin from Compare came and, as with the others, my husband explained what was going on with our furnace and that we had been told we needed a new one. Dustin opened the furnace, took some pressure readings and more I didn't see, explained the pressure was too high, which was causing the furnace to shut off; things apparently none of the other technicians checked, mentioned or tried to address. Dustin's adjustments fixed the furnace! And it has been running perfectly ever since! We had been convinced by other companies that we needed to replace our furnace. We started to have trouble with our air conditioner the middle of June. At that time we had a local company come out to diagnose the problem (which was low freon) and were sold 2.5 pounds that "should do it". We figured maybe it was low since we didn't know the last time it was serviced. Well here we are about 6 weeks later and the A/C wasn't cooling, AGAIN. I had several companies come out and look at my house. It turns out I needed to have the majority of the duct work replaced. Most companies didn't want to deal with this situation since it is not high profit scenario. A couple even tried to sell me a new furnace claiming that would fix the situation. Mark came out and after about 30 minutes of walking around the house he said "I can help you". He and his guys spent a solid 5 days running new ducts in the house and rebuilding the furnace closet. There's no way he could have made much money on this deal but told me he would do it because he knew my house was miserably hot and he wanted to make it more comfortable. We scheduled an appointment for an estimate and after 2 months Mark from Compare Heating & Air Conditioning finally came out to our house. Mark gave us a quote for a new air conditioner and furnace. We were excited for them to come out and install our equipment but Mark said it would take two more weeks to get an installation date. This was on August 24, 2017. Mark emailed us back a week later and told us that he was pushing back our install date to the week of September 17th. We knew they were busy because of the extreme heat but were a little frustrated that we had been waiting over 2 months to get our A/C and furnace installed. We had some more questions a day after getting our install date pushed back so we emailed Mark and he never got back to us. We waited a couple days and called him on his cell phone. He answered and said he was busy so he would call us back in a couple hours. We waited home all day and we got a call from him about 6 hours later. Unfortunately, he was trying to call someone else and said he would call back in another hour. We tried asking about our install date but he was very rude and hung up on us. He never called back that day. We thought he might call us the next day or the following day but he never did. We finally called his sister who works reception on September 5th and she told us that Mark would give us a call that day. In the meantime, we asked our neighbors on the Nextdoor website if they knew of another HVAC company since Mark at Compare was blowing us off. On September 6th after not getting a call back from Mark even though his sister promised us that he would call back, we decided to call Mark one final time. He was upset that we posted the truth about his company not responding back to us on Nextdoor and he yelled at us and told us to find another company. I guess the truth hurts Mark! I've never had such a bad experience with any company in my whole life and never write anything bad about a company until now. I'm 65 years old, have fibromyalsia and trusted this company since they had good reviews. As far as I'm concerned Mark's treatment of a senior citizen with fibromyalsia who had to endure 2 major heat waves this summer with no air is elder abuse. We waited patiently and tried following up many times without a response from Mark. I hope anyone who reads this review goes with another HVAC company. read more

After using Compare to install a system in my house in 2010 and then to maintain it since then, it seemed logical to refer them. So we called them to set an appointment to install another unit. We have called them 4 times. The most uninterested, unhelpful person answers the phone. Says that "one of the guys will call back" and yet no matter how hard we try to use this business, they must not need new or continuous customers anymore. ( I think I will go into the HVAC business, it's obviously the one business that doesn't rely on customer referrals!). Heads up, if you expect a call back, don't bother. read more

Again, my normal disclosure of I only write 5 star reviews if I truly feel they deserve it or 1 start reviews if they truly suck. Nothing but praises for Compare....from the first time we called to see if our furnace can be fixed....to finding out our furnace was old...to scheduling of the salesperson....to the salesperson coming and reviewing everything....to the techs installing the units....and finally the clean up..FANTASTIC. Our furnace broke the week of Christmas and the first tech came out. Said our furnace was on borrowed time but they could fix it at a cost of around $400. Tech said furnaces should last around 20-25 years but ours was 40+ years. No pressure to try and sell us a new one at all. My wife and I talked about it and thought it might be a perfect time to install an AC unit as well. Mark came the day after Christmas and we had a quote that afternoon. Mark was very patient during the visit as well as on email. In fact during his visit, he said he was sorry our family had to endure the cold during Christmas, which was very kind of him to say. When I committed, he said he would try and get us in before the New Year but he made no promises. Turns out he was able to arrange the installation on 12/30 and 12/31. On 12/30 Mark personally drove an employee to begin the process before the rest of the crew showed up because he was hoping to get us heat by the end of the day. As we walked around the house bundled up, Mark showed up around 4ish and said we now have heat. We were thrilled. Then they finished the AC the following day. But here's the thing that really impressed me. Until I looked on their website, I had no idea Mark was the President and part owner of the company. He's a very unassuming and kind gentleman that I just thought was a sales rep. To have the President of the company personally drop someone off at our house so we could get heat by the end of the day AND to come back later in the afternoon to see how the installation was doing AND to tell us we had heat was simply amazing. Mark didn't have to do any of that. I felt like he personally supervised the project so we would freeze another day. So the owner of the company called me the other day to leave me a message regarding my review on Yelp. He reminded me that in the summer, he warned me that it would get really busy during the winter so I should have him do the entire project. Well, the problem was that I had only enough money at the time to take care of the most essential (asbestos removal and containment), rather than the luxury (enlarging air ducts and installing a new one.) So, I am going to give the company an additional star for "ok" because during the summer, Mark was very responsive and got me an estimate quickly and really worked hard to get the asbestos out quickly. He is also very knowledgeable because of his years of experience. Again, reasons why I will not give more than 3 stars is because I had called multiple times and left messages with the office manager and I got no responses. I even sent him an email. As busy as anyone can be, all it takes is about 2 minutes to tell me that you received my message, you are extremely busy and here are some other companies that will assist my needs. Would I recommend this company? Yes, because they know their stuff. But, I will be using another company just because there are plenty of other hard working companies in the central contra costa area. read more

WOW is all I have to say. Very ethical & reputable! I've had 4 HVAC companies come out and they all told me the same thing, I need to spend $18-$23K to redo my entire freon outdated system in my entire house. That was ridiculous! Thank goodness I called these guys, Mark who came out was the nicest person. I told him that we don't wanto to put all this $ into my system and we just wanted it fixed for now. He spent about 1/2 hour looking things over. Everything we were told that was "Broken" or "Ready to Die", he said were fine. The reason why things were working because of minor fixes and repairs, about $1000 worth of repairs. When/If my entire system fails and I really have to replace the whole thing, I'm not giving anyone else my money. I will only call Mark! read more
