We had a nice dinner for our 10th anniversary at compline. Overall the food was beautifully prepared and the flavors well thought it but all three of our dishes had about twice and much salt and they needed. We are not overly salt sensitive people, the fries, the scallops and the risotto were delicious but heavily over salted. We both agreed that the salt overpowered all three dishes. We had both desserts, a chocolate mochi cake and a strawberry shortcake that were lovely. Wine pairings were excellent. It was disappointing that such a simple thing, getting the right salt balance in the main courses, kept compline from greatness in our book. read more

While most of the food we had was pretty good and their safety precautions seemed strong, we were super bummed to see an unmasked couple be seated at the bar...indoors! At no point did this couple have a mask on or with them. The restaurant has multiple signs up saying you must wear a mask yet they did not deny this couple service and for that reason I don't feel safe going back. We just stopped in last night for a glass of wine to check out this new restaurant in downtown Napa and decided to stay for dinner. First of all, if you are a wine lover you will be so pleased the the vast selection of interesting wines to taste which are not seen on other wine lists. The dinner menu is very well though out, if not abundant, but something for everyone. The duck fat French fries are to die for!!!! Probably the best I have EVER tasted! The burger was insanely good, and the chicken was moist and delicious. Prices are reasonable for Napa and we definitely left satisfied. Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert. Went there for New Years and they had a special menu for New Year's Eve. The service was good but the food was ok. Set food menu with a wine pairing for each course. There was an option to have champagne for an additional $45 per person. They poured a half glass of champagne for $45 dollars. I thought that had to be for multiple pours. It was not. They were pouring the champagne out of a magnum bottle and we asked how much for the botttle and they said $90 dollars. We just had two half glasses for that much. I ordered the poke for salad choice and it was literally 2 bites of poke. Next was risotto which was tasty and then the wagyu steak which was about 5 bite and was tasty but chewy and not even close to being great. Finished off with the cheese plate which was two tiny triangles of cheese and two crackers. Each serving had a wine paring but the servings were so small that all of them together did not even come up to one glass of wine. They automatically add. a 15%charge on the bill. That all came to $225 per person. It was was so out of line that I was offended. I will never go out to that restaurant ever again. They must think they have something really special going on there to charge those kinds of prices but trust me it is not. Not even close. Don't waste your time. read more

We had the most delicious dinner here this evening and we left with our taste buds singing!! We had the gnocchi and the black cod and each and every bite was out of this world amazing. Wedge was ok....the type you'd make if you were making one at home.....kind of small....not good to share between two people. Our food took forever. It really might have been an hour after we ordered. Something obviously got mixed up in the kitchen.....and then all of the entrees came out cold except my piping hot burger and fries. Both were fantastic. High quality meat, simple. The server knew that we weren't happy and they made it right and comped two entrees + one corkage. Had dinner here last night with the wife. Everything was very good and well presented. Very small portions but very tasty. Service was excellent as well. The menu is quite limited so make sure to check prior to going to make sure there is something you like. The only odd thing that happened was my wife asked if there were any special menu items and the waiter said no. However, we noticed the table next to us had a large steak and when I asked the waiter what it was he said it was a bone in rib-eye they make on weekends. Bad experience! We were in shock when the manager came to our table and told us that we had to leave the table because they have others people waiting. He told us that we can stay in the bar area, but still, after spending more than $200, and also waited more than 30-40 minutes for our dinner, this was totally the wrong thing to do to a customer. We never experienced this kind of treatment before anywhere. Napa is full of great restaurants, with great food and service. We couldn't believe this was really happening. Stopped by here on Friday night heading home from A&D for a final glass and dessert. We sat on the inside/outside area of the patio in this extremely large comfy couch I could have fallen asleep in... if they had given me a blanket it might have turned into my living room very quickly. Anyways - really diverse by the glass list (~10 wines) with about 50% international varietals. I was in the mood for a full-body red and I usually dislike (extremely) zinfandel but our host convinced me to give this one a shot and it was divine. To forewarn - the btg list is pricey as my zin was $17, but most of them average $14-ish. They had two dessert options and we went with the caramel-type one... it tasted slightly bland but did the job for the night. Our waiter was lovely and great job recommending, with prompt service. I've been in the food industry for years and also have a culinary background so when going to new places I always look more so at the food (and I guess I expect good service based on when it's a higher priced place). I've been too many restaurants through out Napa and Calistoga and this one was my first for down town. We had a reservation yet still waited about 20 minutes to be seated so grabbed a glass of wine at the bar. Then got seated and it went down hill from there. Our waiter was horrible I don't even remember his name and I'm personally someone to call you by your name in a respectful manor. He sat us then left, came back a few minutes later to ask what we wanted to order and we were starving so we went straight to ordering our main course. It took about 45 minutes to get our food in the mean time our waiter never once came back to ask if we needed anything, never brought us water or asked if we wanted any. He finally brought the food and that was it, never saw him again until we flagged him down for our bill.... yet didn't bring us a bill just grabbed my card out of my hand and said oh I'll close you out. Might I say the food was absolutely amazing and the chef/cooks should be proud of the work they do but it's very sad a waiter gave us that experience because I probably will never go back there again. When you have someone who is paying over $100 on a tab for 2 the least you could do, is your job! So I left a note on the bill and I did not tip well and I always tip well. read more

They're open for dining indoor and outdoor however they are not properly set up for outdoor dining. They have 1 ineffective heat lamp per table that is impacted with even the slightest weather change. Let me first say I've Never written a bad review but the customer service was so bad I feel compelled to let people know! My girlfriends and I visited Compline last Saturday night and we had a 8pm reservation, the only time they could get us in and we understood as it was a Saturday night after all. We were seated outside and the only table outside at that time. The server visited our table promptly and took our drink order, we shared a bottle of wine. After 15 minutes he returned to our table, without the wine, to take our order. We order at that time Duck fries for the table to start. At this time a table of 6 ladies sat down two tables away. Finally our wine made it to the table 20 minutes later. We then ordered 2 more items off the menu but our Duck fries still haven't made it to our table. I then notice the ladies that were seated 15 minutes after us getting a slew of food delivered to their table and we still haven't gotten our Duck fries. We then inquire about our fries because at this point we're hungry and have been seated for 45 minutes we get a new server. I explained to the new server how long we have been waiting he stated he would check on the fries. Now the fries come out! He stated the 6 girls ordered salads that's why their food came out quickly. I don't know about you but salads are more extensive to make the putting fries in a fryer?!? At no point did he or anyone else apologize for the lateness of our food. Actually our server was very smug! Keep in mind for a Saturday night the place wasn't that busy, maybe there's a reason for that. I understand when a restaurant is busy but there were plenty of empty seats available. When my girlfriend asked to speak to the manager the server stated he was the manager so that didn't go very far. We would of ordered more food but at that point we were upset about the service. We actually had better service the night before, a Friday night at the Sky and Vine Rooftop Bar during a super busy happy hour four deep at the bar! Hands down the worst experience in all of Napa! Great service, ambiance and wine. We told the server our wine tastes and his recommendation was excellent. But I was surprised by the lack of complex flavors in the half chicken. Horrible! We've been many times and it's always been great. Tonight, one of the worst experiences at any restaurant ever! The worst service! We had a 6:30 reservation, we were on time, seated right away but then.....crickets, Our server took our wine order and our orders of duck fat fries. Took a few minutes to get our wine. Took a while to get the fries, when they came out they were extremely salty, it took several minutes to flag down our server to send them back, he said he would order a new order. Meanwhile he brought our salads out, didn't refill our wine, we had to do that ourselves. We finished our salad and still no fries, he came back and removed the salad plates but left the cold, salty fries, he came back and we ordered another bottle of wine. We'd now been at the restaurant over an hour, still no entrees. We waited another 20 minutes, NOTHING! We finally flagged the owner down to come to the table, He did and we explained the lack of service, the fries, his first reply was "let me get you new fries". We said, we don't want fries now, we want our entrees, he said how can I make this better, I'll get your wine. No authentic apology. He used the "we are short staffed" excuse. We literally saw our server standing around looking at his notebook and looking at it like a dear in the headlights wondering, what do I do? We sat another 5 minutes with still nothing, so we decided we were just done and got up to leave, we passed him and asked him for our bill for our wine and salads, he said, but your entrees are ready now. We said no thanks, he said, okay, you have no bill to pay. His attitude was so much like we were irritating him and bothering him, he had been fawning at every other table, but we had nothing.
