Bringing more tacos to Mass Ave., it's tough not to compare Condado to Bakersfield just down the strip. So, which is the better taco establishment? I'm not ready to choose just yet. But here's where Condado definitely tops Bakersfield: 1. OPTIONS. I'd have to be a mathematician to determine how many different taco combinations Condado offers. Customers can choose from a set menu or fill out a scantron-like sheet to create their own tacos. Customizable options include choice of tortilla (get the Sweet Lucy!), protein, cheese, salsa, sauce, and other veggie toppings like lettuce, fresh cilantro & onions, or peppers. 2.Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly Choices. From tofu to jackfruit, Condado offers a lot of non-meat options. I had the Mantis taco which has a jackfruit base and would order it again even though I eat meat- it was so flavorful and good! 3. Portions. After some guacamole or queso, only 1-2 tacos is all it takes to fill up. Condado's tacos are definitely larger and stuffed with more toppings than Bakersfield's. Speaking of queso, get it. Oh, and you can customize that too. The eloté queso is awesome! P.S. Condado is open until 2am and would make a great late night stop. Located on the north end of the block on Mass Avenue across from Salt and Goodfellas, this place makes a big first impression: big room, big colors, big sound. The room has high ceilings with the dining room first and the bar in the back. Lots of four and six people tables fill the dining area while the bar is set up for smaller groups & individuals. The walls of the place are covered in street art/comic advertising type murals that are bright and bold in color. And the sound was cranked pretty loud even at 2 in the afternoon. Fortunately, I was dining by myself, so I only had to try conversing with the server for my table. I ordered a blackberry margarita which comes served in a glass jar with lime slices. They didn't put any "rim" on the drink (not sure if any of the flavors offer salt or sugar rims). The drink was really good and I would definitely recommend it. It wasn't made too strong but had a nice flavor balance. My waitress helped me understand my dining options. They have multiple menus which can be a bit confusing until you understand. There were two menus just for the beverages which were already laid out on my table. Each table has at least one "station" that stores paper towels (napkins), pencils, and the food menus. If you choose to go with the appetizers or the "suggested" taco combinations, you simply tell your server. However, if you decide to "Build Your Own" (BYO), it is more like filling out a test: you put your name on the top of one of the paper menus, the quantity of each type of taco you want to build, and then fill in the circles next to the line item you want to include. Note that you can build two types of tacos on each sheet. So, I chose the BYO and wanted two different kinds. I first selected the type of shell I wanted (you won't believe how many they have until you see the form!). I then picked the protein and anything special like beans or rice (those are extra). You then fill in your toppings, cheeses, salsa, and sauces. The toppings are unlimited, but the others suggest you only get one per taco. Note that if you aren't sure how a sauce will taste, you can order it on the side by writing SOS (Sauce on Side). So, basically, when they use such fresh made ingredients, if you don't like the flavors in your taco, that's a You problem since it is what you ordered. And this process explains why even at 2 in the afternoon that it took just over 20 minutes to get my food. Most places have set options, so the kitchen can crank those out. Here, the kitchen has to read every line of your form (without confusing the two columns) and hope that you filled it out clearly (no partially erased circles or overlapping check marks). They can't get in a rhythm like other places, so know that this isn't going to be a place to go to if you are in a rush. Sure, they may get faster over time, but it just won't be as fast as places that don't let you pick. Fortunately, I wasn't in a rush and the food was worth the wait! I tried one with the Tequila Lime Steak and chose a fairly loaded taco. The other, I went with the Sweet Lucy shell (one soft flour outside a corn hard shell with queso and guac for $1 upcharge) and the Tex-Mex ground beef base that was also quite tasty. It was so tasty that I was nearly finished before I realized that my SOS sauces hadn't come with my meal. Mark it down as an opening day mistake, but it tells you how good the tacos were that I didn't think them dry or tasteless without the sauce. That is something I probably wouldn't say at many of the other taco places around town. The service was hopping even in the early afternoon and was quite welcoming. Note that if you sit at the front, the kitchen is clear to the back by the bar, so your server may disappear from view for awhile, but that is usually for just a brief time. They are constantly moving when they aren't taking your order: checking on the kitchen, refilling water, checking to make sure you don't need anything else. They had that down. But the food was brought out by someone else and I didn't see my order form after I sent it with my server, so it was hard to do a check to see if all the ingredients were there. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and beverages and liked the look of the place. This is a wonderful addition to Mass Ave! I ended up here two times within their first three days of business. To my surprise, there was not a wait either time. The atmosphere is very inviting and the décor is bright and cheery. I like the concept of building my own taco, bowl, or nachos; however, at first glance the menu is overwhelming. Good thing a separate menu of favorite combinations is offered. Prices are extremely affordable - most under $5 and these are not small tacos. One downside, many ingredients were unavailable during my visits, such as rice, cabbage, steak, etc. I'll chalk this up to being the opening weekend and not let it deter me from returning. Another plus - margarita flights! I went with prickly pear, blood orange, and jalapeño during my first visit. The flavor did not come through and all three tasted strictly of alcohol. This place has been on my list to try for the past few weeks! We met up with friends for dinner around 6, and saw the usual dinner crowd so we put our name in. 40 minutes later we checked on our name after seeing other parties being sat and found they never actually got our name in. They fixed it by sitting us immediately when they realized it. The place has cool, fun decor but as others have said, it's super noisy. Would not recommend coming here for an intimate dinner. I ordered the house margarita, and the group ordered the trio of apps that included the Blanco cheese, traditional guacamole, and salsa rojo. I did not like the marg, as it was too syrupy. For the trio, the queso had a ton of cumin on top and therefore gave it an odd taste, especially if you're expecting just traditional cheese dip. Salsa and guacamole were fine but the chips basket was literally all crumbs. Our waiter noticed and brought us new ones, which was great of him. For the tacos, I got the suggested taco mantis, which was jackfruit. I loved that the shell was a combo of soft and hard shell as it gave a great texture. However, I didn't love the pineapple habanero sauce since it was a little too hot and a little too sweet. I think I would order something different next time. Overall, our table liked what they ordered but everyone said they would try something different. Final thought is that I would try this place again but maybe during a time they aren't busy and get different stuff. Our waitress was attentive, super friendly, and had some good recommendations for drinks. My friend and I planned to visit Condado tacos today on our lunch break. The sign at the front said "See Bartender for Seating." We waited at the bar for about 5 minutes without acknowledgement from the bartender. The hostess eventually found us and seated us. It took about another 15 minutes to get two cups of water. We told the hostess we were ready to order and he said he'd let a server know. At this point, we had waited for approximately 20 minutes - only to get two cups of water and basically ignored. Ordered some tacos. Got a text saying "it's taco time"! Was excited to eat them. An hour later, no tacos and no explanation except "we're running behind". Asked for my money back. 5 minutes later, am still waiting for the host to return after she said "I'll be right back". I probably will never come back to learn if the tacos are actually good. Update: after I complained, a manager came out and apologized and told me to contact Grubhub for a refund. Then said the tacos were "on the line" and he had his top chef working on them. Then they were ready within about 10 minutes. And they were cold. We each ate one of our two tacos and did not try our second ones, as they weren't very good. Interesting ingredients and fun variations include two layered shells (hard corn plus soft flour). The decor is fantastic. Not impressed. Mexican food is not a hard find a in Indy, especially authentic Mexican. While it wasn't a bad experience I wasn't wowed at all. The idea of making your own tacos is cool, but my first time there I didn't know so much would be stuffed in the taco. The margarita I had tasted like sugar water. The first time I visited Condado at the Broad Ripple location, i wasn't sure what all the hype had been about. Food was fine, but I already have a favorite local taco place close to my house. BUT THEN Condado had a soft opening on Mass Ave, and they offered free food if we'd be kind while their servers and cooks learned the ropes of the restaurant. NOW IM HOOKED. I'll never abandon my local place, but Condado has a groovy atmosphere that you just can't find everywhere. The servers are relaxed and friendly and seem to work as a team filling up waters and chips as needed. My husband and I enjoy ordering funky kinds of queso and guac that you can't find at your classic mom and pop taco joint. Also, did I mention they have a plethora of whiskey? That'll win me over quickly. They have specialty tacos on the menu if you like to trust the chef, but if you're feeling adventurous they have a build your own option as well. We stopped in here at 10pm on a Monday night after a concert and was greeting with happy employees and a full house (surpised it was that busy on a late Monday evening)! The atmosphere is very inviting with the high ceilings and murals throughout the restaurant. We were told that all the murals were painted by local artist from Indy, very COOL!! The menus were a little intimidating but after our server explained everything it was super easy to place your order on sheets of paper (like sushi restaurants but tacos :)). We had a group of 5 and got the pinapple guac & queso to share and both were authentic and delicious! I got 2 tacos, one with the SWEET LUCY (flour soft + corn hard + queso + guac) with steak, cilantro, onions, and habanero salsa. The other taco I got the PEEZLER ( flour soft + corn hard + bacon refried beans, guac, sour cream) also with steak, cilantro, onions, and habanero salsa. The salsa was fresh and had a kick to it but not too spicy. The tacos were huge and I could barely finish them. I had never been here before but for the last couple of weeks my daughter has been going so I decided to order a take out. I really like the way it's boxed up and ready to go...I ordered 2 tacos. One was called an Ooey Gooey which consisted of a hard corn shell, black beans, queso blanco, roasted chicken, cilantro, onions and a dirty sauce...it was tasty...the chicken was not dry but moist and very tender...I ate it fast Next I ate a taco called Braised + Confused which was a soft flour shell with rice, brisket, jcome, cabbage slaw, pickled onions, quesco and a chipotle cream...it was nice and delicious as well i like when the meat is tender and not dry which this was not. I also had a side of chips and guacamole....the chips were nice just how i like them with a good taste, the guacamole took me by surprise it was a nice portion which i was glad it had pickled onions on top which i had never had before but it was tasty...I was a little taken because it had a kick and was a little spicy but nit over bearing...just should be a warning for those that don't like spice. I would give it a 3.5/5 but almost a 4/5. The tacos were pure amazing!!! Some of the best I've probably ever had and were filled full with ingredients. It is a new restaurant so I give them the benefit of a doubt, but our service was very slow. Took about 8 minutes for someone to even come to our table, he didn't ask if we'd been there before or explain to us how it works until we asked. Food came out quickly, but waiter service could of used some help. Also, I got the flight margarita- which is 3 mini Margaritas and I couldn't taste any alcohol. My coworkers and I came here for lunch and it was an okay experience. The food was alright, but nothing mind-blowing. I ordered nachos and they were room temp. They could have been really good I think if they were fresh and hot. The service was pretty slow for not being a packed house. It seemed like they were short staffed but it took a very long time regardless for our waitress to take our orders and then took awhile for our food to come out too. I've been coming to Condado ever since they opened up shop in downtown Indy. I can't say enough about them! It's always my go to place for anything taco or Tex mex related for both dine in AND delivery via UberEats or DoorDash. I love that they have build your own options for everything or you can try their own suggestions. Tacos are usually my go to entre of choice, however I have also had their bowls and nachos and both are equally as tasty. One thing to note about their tacos are the fact that they are full size tacos. Not the smaller street style sized tacos. Personally, I'm a huge fan of their tequila lime steak, queso (especially the smoked cheddar queso with chorizo) and their kewl ranch taco shell! One unique thing about Condado are their double decker shell options. I can honestly say I have never ordered the same combination of things twice when building my own. Condado also has several marg combinations to choose from. If you like a sweeter drink, the Pineapple Express marg is excellent, however you can never go wrong with the house marg on the rocks. Very helpful with assisting filling out our order form. He also gave suggestions and plenty of time for us to make decisions on food and drink selections. Food: Very flavorful! From the guacamole dip's and corn salsa everything was delicious. I ordered two tacos one shrimp and the other chicken with two different season taco shells. Overall everything tasted amazing. Environment: It can get crowded. They have tall tables with stools and shorter tables with chairs. I was suggest if anyone has any back problems to sit at a table versus the tall tables. Cost: Their prices are reasonable. It's around three dollars per taco. However with splitting a appetizer with a friend my total order came up to around $16. Not bad. I now have two visits to Condado Mass Ave under my belt, both Fridays at lunch time. The first thing you notice about the place is, of course, the crazy, cool graffiti'd black and neon walls, covered floor to (very high) ceilings. The vibe is really unlike any other place I've seen in Indy! MENU: The menus are like little scantron tests where you bubble in your order. You have two options of menu sheets, one is a "create your own" and the other has pre-created meals to choose from. Both times I created my own tacos. I can't eat gluten and they didn't have a soft corn tortilla option, just a hard corn shell, so my only options were to go with the hard shell or the rice taco bowl. FOOD: I went with the hard taco shell with chicken, red cabbage, fajita peppers + sautéed onions, corn salsa, and chipotle honey sauce. (The sauce shows two little flame icons next to it but, coming from someone who cannot handle anything spicy, I can confirm that it is NOT spicy at all.) The tacos were really delicious and everyone else's were packed pretty full, mine were a little weaker-looking because of that hard shell, though. There were mixed reviews about the different meat choices but I personally loved the chicken in mine!. They had a lot margarita specials and flavors. I tried the prickly pear margarita... AMAZING. SERVICE: The servers were nice but the service was sloooooow. Not sure if it's always like this or if we just hit a busy day/time, but it definitely took a while to get our order.
