Aesthetic vibey place. Lots of ppl come here to study. Busy for a weekday around 3:30pm. Drinks were good. I'd be curious to try one of their matches or other coffee options. Don't think I'd order the Buko Kape again. Little too much coffee taste for me. Croissant was just okay. Nothing crazy special. Buko Kape: 4/5 Cheese & Spinach Croissant: 4/5
This was a great find! They have so many new and creative drinks while not compromising the taste of the matcha or coffee. There's plenty of seating inside and they have a good music playlist for ambiance. Service is very friendly and welcoming too. I got the Mango No. 5 which was a matcha latte with mango puree and sweetened oat milk with a coconut foam and it was surprisingly so good!! I've never seen these flavor combinations for a matcha but they work. The drink was not overly sweet and it still tasted like matcha. Highly recommend this spot for a quirky, laid back coffee shop with delicious drinks.
My favorite iced coffee in the Orange Circle! I've been coming here for years, and it always hits the same. It's a block away from the main downtown area. Street parking and the nearby used to fill up quickly, but now that the area charges for parking, it's even more of a commitment when I'm already picking up a $6.50 coffee. I honestly wish they had a 10 minute pickup spot in front of the shop to make things a little easier. The shop is bright, cute, and very aesthetic, with a great collection of records lining the back. Finding a table can be tricky, especially when Chapman is in session since the seating fills up quickly. I also like that they have their coffee ready on tap and add specific customizations depending on what you order. I always get the Lovebirds, which only comes in large. It's a coffee oolong milk tea, which is a pretty unique combination. I like how it's strong, more coffee-forward, and less sweet than what you'd typically get at a boba shop. I do like coming here, but I have to have a good reason to spend time in the Circle when I know I'll be paying for parking. Otherwise, it can be a little hard to justify for just a coffee run.
I've alway really enjoyed this place and had to come here when I was visiting Orange Circle. Hazelnut Milktini (5/5): This was by far the best drink I've had here and my group all wished they got this drink instead of what they ordered. It is a horchata latte with hazelnut espresso. The sweet cinnamon added great flavor to the drink and the hazelnut added great flavor. This was such an amazing drink. Will definitely be back!
Another "not my first time here but first time reviewing." Contra is one of my other rituals when I visit Old Town Orange at least once a year, it's one of the funnest coffee shops in Southern CA. They have a lot of unique draft coffee and tea drinks. This time I opted for the Ube Thai Tea for just the right hit of caffeine - it wasn't bad, but i think i prefer their pandan drinks. Wish I had more time in the area, it looks like a cool place to get work done - but it can get crowded!
Ordered their disrespectful version of Vietnamese coffee, which was basically straight-up milk. Traditional Vietnamese coffee is a completely different experience--you should feel the effects just from holding that little cup. One sip and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. That's how you know you're drinking the real stuff.
Contra is one of my favorites! It's probably my favorite at the orange circle. There are so many different options to try out and they even have a flight if you want to try multiple drinks at a time. I tried one of their seasonal drinks: Buko Kape, which was coconut vietnamese coffee topped with pandan foam. The coffee was strong and delicious. The pandan foam was the perfect addition. My other favorites are the Lovebirds and Foxy Cleopatra. I really love the flavors of their drinks. As always, their service is superb and I love interacting with the baristas. They're so sweet! Lots of space to do work and reliable wifi. There's a bathroom in the back as well. I love the songs that they play. Parking can be a little hard to find if it's later in the day. Most of the parking around there is 2 or 3 hour paid parking.
To preface, we are used to coffees from Westminster and Garden Grove and tried a good amount of spots there. I wanna start by saying that this place is so unique with their decor and the vinyl records. There's so much space and that's a standout trait in comparison to many cafes. Parking next to it is paid so be sure to park on the street. We ordered 3 coffees - Melo, Ate Latte, and Kuya Latte. The presentation was nice but none of us liked our coffees. :( I know that many of the comments here are opposite of how we felt so maybe it was just an off day? I'd say give the place a try anyways!
This matcha is really good! If you are in Orange and are looking for a cafe, please check this one out! They have Filipino-inspired flavors. The service is good and the inside is very cute and music-themed. Sometimes, there is even a DJ!
It's in Old Town Orange so the parking situation is not the best. Contra's interior space was much bigger than expected and had plenty of tables and seats. I really liked all the decor and there's also a small record store in the back. I ordered Mango No. 5, which was the mango coconut matcha latte. The flavors worked well together but I did not like how chalky the matcha tasted. I was disappointed by the drink given the $8 price tag.
Dope spot with some seriously good coffee. The vibe was chill with tons of seating although it gets really busy with students so seating can get tough. Had the buko pandan. Both the colors and flavors of the drink were wonderful. There's also a record store inside if you're looking for a side quest with your coffee.
I lucked out and found a parking spot right in front of the shop. Not sure if it was a pay to park spot, but I wasn't planning on staying. Upon entering, the vibe was very cool/chill. Lots of people hanging out, studying, reading, chatting, etc. There's cool art around and the music in the background set the vibe. I ordered the "Kuya Ate" a latte with an ube foam. Sigh... I love ube and as a Filipina, maybe my expectations of ube in anything are high because for me, this fell short. The flavor is so faint that I think it's more like I'm feeling it only because it's purple... not necessarily because it's what I'm tasting. The espresso is very prominent and had a Smokey essence.. which then masks a lot of the "ube" flavoring.
Super cool/cute coffee shop. My friend and I really enjoyed taking in all the signs, posters and Records that they posted up all over the shop. For coffee, I tried the Melo, which was very delicious. I actually expected the coffee to be a lot stronger, but sweetness of the caramel and cold foam balanced it out nicely. If/when I'm in the area again, I'll definitely go back to try other options!
Originally, I wanted to see the stationery shop but I ended up grabbing some drinks on a Sunday afternoon. This cafe is SUPER packed, it looks popular with students for studying. It was hard to find a place to sit but I enjoyed the two other smaller stores inside for browsing and light shopping. All of the drinks on the menu had really fun fusion ideas. Lucky cat - 5/5, kumquat mango green tea is so good!!! My usual concern with these kinds of drinks is they taste super artificial and are generally too sweet, but this was perfect! The green tea flavor still comes through and the two fruits balance each other's sweetness and tartness out. Love bird - 5/5, the coffee flavor is strong and in combination with the oolong milk tea was a really interesting and delicious drink! read more

Was looking for a place to get matcha in Orange and stumbled upon Contra. Parking was easy to find on a Friday morning. I went in and did not have to wait long to order and to get my order. The Strawberry Fields was great you can taste the strawberry which gave the matcha a sweet taste without drowning out both the strawberry and matcha. The drink also wasn't too sweet! The vibes inside is spacious and I wish I had more time to explore around but I'll definitely be coming back when I come down to Orange again read more

We got the liftoff and chose to try the love bird, trailblazer, gold rush, and dirty horchata. Service was alright, cashier was not very friendly or helpful. Seemed like she didn't really wanna. Our favorite was the dirty horchata, quite actually the only one we enjoyed. Trailblazer literally tasted and smelled like compost. Gold rush (Vietnamese coffee)- "is the Vietnamese coffee in the room with us?" It was bland and watered down, with a strange sweetness. Love birds was decent, also watered down. Has a boba taste. The caffeine did its job but i'd be interested to try the specials because these were disappointing flavor wise considering the overall rating of the shop. read more

The circle is definitely saturated with so many coffee shops but this place is a must! The flavor of these drinks was amazing. We have never finished a coffee faster. Fair pricing and super quick service but I do feel like the drink to ice volume is a little low. While you're there you can browse local art, a record store, and stationary store. Tons of indoor seating. Also the place appears dog and family friendly. read more
I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this coffee joint! It's Vietnamese influenced and the drinks are more than delicious. The drafts are mounted on the wall behind the counter. They also sell the coffee in jugs. There's also a record store and a small gadgets shop inside the coffee shop, super cute. My only mini complaint is that the pastry cabinet was empty when we got there at 2pm on a Saturday. Will def visit again! read more

My favorite coffee shop to visit in Orange bc of their delicious and unique flavors and coffee on tap. It's one-of-a-kind! My favorite is the Lovebird which is coffee with oolong milk tea. Husband's fav is the Foxy Cleopatra- coffee with Thai tea. So flavorful, no other coffee/tea/boba shop does it like Contra! read more
I had been wanting to visit Contra for awhile and finally made it happen this weekend and now am upset that it took me this long. Still not over how cute and vibey this place is. It's the new age trendy shop with a DJ spinning catchy tunes at a mild volume so people can work on their laptops or have conversations. It's the shop with heaping piles of vinyl's to peruse through and pick from. It's the shop with coffee and tea on tap!! It's the place with an open and airy interior that makes you feel calm yet energized. Ordered "The Best Friend" which is a brown sugar matcha latte with their house made oat milk. I thought it was good and unique in that the brown sugar was in a cold foam that eventually melted into the matcha latte. Did I think it was one of the best drinks ever? No. Did the atmosphere elevate the bevvy? Yep. I will absolutely be back as they have a newfound recurring customer in me. read more

It's a great place to work and be productive at, really loved the decor here. I got the Ate Latte (Ube & Thai Tea). My friends got Cactus Coolada and Hey Arnold! It was my first time trying ube and Thai tea flavors together, I don't think it's my favorite combo. But the drink looks so pretty! My friends enjoyed their drinks, both were very refreshing. I'd had this place bookmarked for a while and I was really looking forward to coming here. I always check coffee menus before going and saw they have my most coveted Ube lattes. Fair warning: this place ONLY has iced coffee and tea, NO hot beverages at all. Not an issue for me since all I ever order is iced, but my husband who was with me was outta luck. Their pros: the ube latte was delicious. Only comes in one size. I also tried an almond croissant, which was also tasty. They have books as well as a small record shop inside the space. I have also seen they occasionally play live music. Their cons: limited seating. This place is very popular, and their inside space is limited. We got lucky and sat by their window seats (literally in the window nook), but saw others having to take their coffees to go. While I enjoyed my drink, I'm not sure my experience was as enjoyable. The drinks were okay! They had a unique selection but the execution was a little lacking. We ordered the Ate Latte (ube thai tea), the Lilikoi (passion fruit matcha), and the basic matcha latte. The flavor for all of them were a little watered down and the matcha wasn't whisked thoroughly so there were clumps at the bottom of the cup. Contra's specialty drinks on tap are their well-known sensation. Each drink at Contra was uniquely formed and named which really brings out each's personality. The tea flight is a highlight, especially the combination of thai tea and viet coffee. Each drink was so well-balanced and refreshing. If I had to choose a favorite cafe in the Orange Circle, Contra Coffee would be my top choice. Plenty of seating, great customer service, and cool little shops in the cafe. The Kuya latte is an amazing drink for Ube lovers - you can taste the distinct Ube taste while getting the bittersweet aftertaste of their coffee. read more
this is a coffee place that's quick to give you your order of coffee. All their coffees are on tap so it makes it pretty easy to just grab n go. I would say it's a slight variation from what you would experience at a Philz coffee. The interior is constantly lively and seeing every chair always filled with someone's butt in it. Coffee is solid, and if you don't like your drink let them know and they'll fix it the way you like it. read more

This cafe is such a cool spot! It has plenty of seating and even a record shop inside, which adds to the unique vibe. They also have a lot of creative drinks, and while unique drinks can sometimes be hit or miss, the ones here are actually really good. The barista, Chris, was super helpful in recommending drinks and adjusting the sweetness to our preference. I got the Lovebirds with Earl Grey foam, and it was amazing--the Earl Grey foam added a nice floral touch. My partner got the Foxy Cleopatra, and it was perfectly sweet. I've tried so many of the drinks here and you really can't go wrong with any of them. I got the dirty horchata today and I appreciate that the flavor doesn't overpower the coffee itself. Great spot to get work done in the mornings on the weekdays because there are plenty of tables and it's pretty mellow. It got super busy around lunchtime though so it's a bit harder to get a table in the afternoons. read more

This was one of the best ube latte's I've had in a while - the ube flavor definitely stands out and pairs with the viet iced coffee very well! The cashier was friendly and the interior was cute! Such a cute spot! There is plenty of seating as well as tables so you can study or catchup with friends. I ordered the Melo 2.0, a Vietnamese coffee with caramel and cold foam. If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, this one is great! It was not too sweet for me and they didn't put too much ice either. My drink came out in less than 10 minutes. The menu is very diverse and they have unique drinks. I can't wait to come back to try something else! read more

I had a great experience at Contra Coffee in Orange! We were greeted with very friendly staff and loved the super cute interior with the attached vinyl/record shop and stationary store in the back. As a coffee and tea/matcha enthusiast I can honestly say I loved this spot. My boyf and I shared a flight and the peppermint matcha latte, which we were hesitant to try as it sounded like a crazy mixture but it was honestly one of my favorite matcha lattes I've ever had. For the flight I can't remember the names specifically, but we got the dirty horchata, the Vietnamese iced coffee with Thai tea, the oat milk Thai tea and the strawberry green tea. Each one was flavorful and not overly sweet, they also let us know if they weren't sweet enough they could add sweetener which we appreciated! However I liked the level of sweetness, even though I generally like my coffees and teas on the sweeter side. The Thai tea was great as well as the tea and coffee. The peppermint matcha latte was surprisingly creamy, and had the perfect mixture of fresh peppermint and sweet matcha. The workers were so nice and the cafe was cute. Would highly recommend trying their coffee, tea or lattes. Also loved strolling around the orange circle after with my yummy drink. read more

What a fun fun place! It was my first time at the old town circle and I was doing a little research before coming but contra rly interested me because of their interior and their concept of having their coffee on tap. I will have to say the inside is SOO nice I love everything abt it and I want to come back to study or to hangout instead of grabbing and going. The drink I got was the kuya latte which I found pretty good, but I feel like it needed a little bit more ube and less bubbly foam on top because it kind of ruined it for me ish not too much to where it was a big deal though. I really want to try their other drinks tho which is why I gave jt a 4 star and I hope more of their drinks will impress me because I loved this. read more

Are we talkin' only awesome drinks, but no food items at all?
They tend to have a small selection of baked goods such as donuts, ham/cheese croissants, etc. However, they usually run out in the morning wheras they are open all day.
Do you allow dogs inside?
I don't work there but they haven't had an issue so far with my 90 lb Goldendoodle. They did ask me to not put his cone on the tables but other than that they have been totally welcoming with him. The staff have even come from behind the counter…
Is it hard to find parking here? i heard the nearby street parking is permit-only & the parking lot across gets crowded fast.
There is 2 hour street parking and a parking lot across the way. If you do a pass by once or twice, you're bound to find a spot.
This place is listed as having outdoor seating. Is that still available?
The only outdoor seating are the two small tables with 2 chairs each.
Are any of the coffees unsweetened?
Yes! They have a few purely cold brew options with no add-ins.
Are they dog friendly 🐶?
Do you offer decaf options?
Yes! There was one coffee decaf and one tea decaf on the menu.
Are there outlets to plug in to around the outdoor seating area?
there are a few! it's mostly alongside the walls, & those seats get filled up fast if you come on a busy day.
Anyone know if Simplicitea is back on tap?
It's on their menu this week. They regularly post their taplist on their Instagram.
Will you be open 3/16 and that entire week? Just checking, since I know some places are closed for a bit due to Covid-19.
Unfortunately they will be closed until further notice. :/ I had an event that was supposed to happen there this past weekend and it got cancelled and was informed they'd be shutdown until things calm down with COVID-19.
How is the WiFi here? How would you rate this place for individual study or study groups?
WiFi is good at first but throughout the day when it gets busier it starts to get choppy. Individually in the morning and then groups usually form later in the day.
Do they have any muffins or other pastries?
Just recently they started carrying vegan donuts from Caffeinated Kitchen.
Do they have almond milk?
All of their "milk" bases are made with Rice milk. No dairy milk is used.
