Issues with my 1955 Thunderbird running poorly. With a suspected carburetor issue, a friend referred me to Steve. Over the course of half a day, Steve was able to tune the carburetor and methodically, system by system rule in/out possibilities. He patiently walked me through the process so that I would have a good understanding. He ultimately was able to narrow down the issue and pinpoint that the ignition unit inside the distributor was failing. My mechanic recommended that I bring my 1985 Honda Accord to Steve to repair/replace the carburator. The car belonged to my dad, and I take very good care of the car. Called Steve the previous week. He told me to bring the car in on Monday. Arrived at 9:30 on Monday. Place was closed. Asked the business owner next door what time Steve usually arrived. Was told "It's hit or miss. But I think I know where he is. He stops around the corner on his way in." He called Steve, said he would be arriving in a few minutes. Steve walked in holding a box. I said I had called him last week about the car and explained it stalled when it came to a stop. I found Steve to be very argumentative. Said the job would cost between 500 to 1000 dollars. Why didn't my mechanic fix the carb if he knew something was wrong. I won't go into all the details of the back and forth conversation, but he changed his tune when I said I was going to find another place to bring my car. Must not need the work if he treats customers this way. I will add that Steve arrived looking either enibriated or hungover. Steve rebuilt the single barrel, automatic choke Rochester I have in my 54 Chevy a year or two back and he does great work. Carburetor works great and he helped me tune the car after I got it back, had a year warranty on the work which was nice. The one thing I would have to say as a tip is that if you like original looking hardware on your carburetor you should say something before hand. I'm kinda a purist but, a lot of the old (& rusty) original bolts I had on my carb got replaced with new ones when I got mine redone, and they where replaced with new more modern hardware, which is great but I still kinda wish I had the original looking ones ya know... Anyways... Steve is a class act, if you need some great carb work done, give him a call, drive up the driveway to the end of the strip, park your car there and go into the last shop on the right to ask for him. To say Steve is a carburetor savant would be an understatement. He knows carbs and fuels systems cold. Brought him the carb from my 1969 Road Runner. To my surprise, he put it on a test engine and immediately identified the problems. He said he'd do a deeper dive once disassembled, rebuild it and I'd have it back within a week. I was pleasantly surprised by the turnaround time and to be honest, a bit skeptical. Four days later, I arrived to pick up my carb and it looked terrific. Along with the rebuilt carb, Steve offered several tips on installation and fine tuning the idle and fuel mix. He also offered to review the performance once reinstalled. The rebuild did the trick. He reached inside and made 3 or 4 different adjustments. 20 minutes later after some fun chit chat he had completely changed how my beauty ran! Steve, where have you been all my life? Low key place hidden in the back off of Arnold Industrial in Concord. Best kept secret. I was referred by the guy who did a total frame off restoration of my long awaited 68 Camaro. I had a slight leak that made my heart drop. Brought it in to Steve and he diagnosed the issue spot on and had it repaired by the next day. It involved taking the top part of the engine off. While in the process of putting it back together, he noticed little things here and there that were loose or needed to be cleaned up and he took the liberty of tightening them up as well. Knowing that I wanted to keep my car stock, he saw that my radiator cap was after market and looked for one that would be perfect and gifted it to me. He also explained to us about how things work... Steve is amazing. Nobody takes the time to do this any more and to be honest, I really feel this guy is genuine like back in the day. He truly cares. I've taken my other car to another place, also in Concord that not only messed up my car really bad but charged me an arm and a leg and the car never ran good again. Each time I brought it back because it just wasn't running right, I was told it was more money, even though there was a warranty. So I gave up and chalked it up to a lesson learned. I never did a negative yelp review because he told me how he was in the process of suing another customer who did. Naturally, I was a bit gun shy to bring it here. I could not trust ANYONE with my cars but one other guy (who does not specialize in what I needed) But I am glad I did. The difference between Steve and the first "mechanic" that messed up my other car is that Steve is real. He's been in this for a long time and enjoys doing this. After many frustrating inquiries to different shops about our old boat carb, Steve was the first person who was willing to help and offered frank, knowledgeable guidance in accessible language. I was wary about driving out to to Concord from the Bay, but it was so worth the trip (and if you plan the trip in off traffic hours, it's not bad). He rebuilt our carb, ran it on his test engine and provided us with some maintenance steps to we don't have this problem again. Brought a Carb to get the shaft for the throttle blades repaired, and I'm sure Steve WOULD have done a good job....Keyword WOULD...Had the carb for 2 weeks, I checked in with him 5 different times....The last call I made, he said he had the carb on the stand and it would be ready for pick up. Great!...Call the following day before I head over to pick it up, now he tells me "He'll be looking at it soon", "to keep checking in with him" WTF...Drove down picked up my Carb immediately....He didn't touch it...AT ALL, he basically stored it for 2 weeks all the while, giving me the run around. He's a BS'er for sure. I'm sure he does good work (so I've been told), but at the expense of being lead on and lied too.....I'll pass. I Brought in a VW 30 series carb on a Tuesday .Steve the owner had a new fuel inlet professionally tapped and threaded for it by the next day. This past month I was traveling from the State of Washington to Santa Barbara California, with my 15 year old daughter along the Washington/ Oregon/California Coast, in my 65 Convertible Mustang, and broke down on a Sunday evening right North of the Golden Gate Bridge. I had to have it towed to San Francisco. I "thought" it was a Fuel/Carburetor problem. First thing Monday morning, Not being from the area, and not knowing anyone who who worked on Carburetors and Fuel systems, I called several Carburetor shops in town, and everyone I called, stated they could not get me in for up to two weeks. Here I am, in a strange town, on our Vacation, and again, not knowing anyone. The last chance I had on my I-Phone Carburetor list, was to call Steve at "Contra Costa Carburetor". Steve was very sympathetic to our situation, and even though he said he was booked solid, he would get us in that afternoon because we were stranded. Once we arrived to his small shop that Monday afternoon, with the vehicle barely running, he told us to hop in his personal truck and he would run us to a Deli close by for the afternoon while he worked on our car. Very kind of him! By afternoon's end, our car was running again, and we continued on our Vacation with no more mechanical issues. It ended up being not only some Carburetor issues, but also a bad Coil, which Steve diagnosed. What a True Blessing Steve is, and his true and honest character is second to none! Took in my old Holley spread-bore that has been on my truck for the last 35 years with, other than filter changes, no servicing at all. The truck finally stopped. Traced the problem to the carburetor, and took it to Steve. He went through it, and it works great. I bolted it in place hooked up the lines, dropped the idle a touch and went on the road. these guys are fantastic! they rebuilt my carburetor 3 years ago and did a fantastic job. I had the engine rebuilt but still had performance problems. I called to see if they could help me out. they pulled the carb apart and discovered a tiny piece of muck clogging it. they cleaned it out and adjusted my pcv to help with a leak. all this within one day and for less than $200. Ok. They need to let us give more than 5 Stars. Took my carb there to get it cleaned and rebuilt. Got it installed and it ran as good as I expected it to. I took Steve up on his offer to have me stop by sometime and let him check how it was doing on my car (1963 Falcon). Short story is that HE wasn't happy with the performance of this little single barrel carb, and proceeded to spend the better part of the next 2 1/2-3 hours modifying the carb, so I could get the proper advance as I accelerated. IMMEDIATELY after he installed it and started the car, you could tell a difference. Then we went for a drive. WOW!! Insane difference. My little Falcon had never been able to snap a neck, when I took off. However, I can now blast onto the freeway and get up to speed and merge without feeling like I am gonna get run over. Neck snapping is now a normal occurrence. If he can do this to a little single barrel carb, just think the magic he can work with a 4 barrel. Bottom line, he has a doctorate in Carburetor Operations. I had a Carburetor fixed at another shop and returned to the original shop six times to fix the problem, no luck! Contra Carburetor fixed it and other problems the first time just as they said they would. They have performed tuneups in preparation for smog for us many times resulting in a string of passes.
