Cook Out has a good size menu with great prices and fast service. We stopped by this afternoon around 3:00 thinking that it wouldn't be too busy, even thought they just opened... Boy were we wrong. The drive through line was around the building, twice and the line inside wrapped around the dining room. We were thinking that it would take 30 minutes to get through the line and get our food, but it was closer to 10. Nicely done Cook Out. I ordered a "tray" with two chili dogs, hush puppies and onion rings with a Cheer Wine float. $4.29!?!?!? Wow. What a deal for all of that food. And that is what makes Cook Out so attractive. You get a ton of decent food for a great price. I didn't leave thinking "man, that was one of the best meals I've had!". But I did leave thinking that I would be back regularly for a good, quick, dirt cheap meal. I also love being able to add a corn dog, quesadilla, or the usual fries, onion rings, etc. as sides. So load up the soccer mobile with mini Mia Hamm and the rest of the little ankle biters and head to Cook Out without having to break all of the kid's piggy banks. read more

The key to understanding the pull of cookout is the price to quality ratio. I can take a family of 5 here and eat for less than it costs to go to McDonald's but the food is vastly better. If you want a gourmet burger, then you won't get it at cookout, but you will pay much more for it. Their burgers are fantastic, and taste like something you would grill yourself and not the processed mystery meet you get from fast-food. The food is always hot, and tastes fresh. Of course this is not what you'd expect to be a "health food" place, so I can't be too critical. When I ordered iced tea, and tapped it from the big container, it was sweet. Really good fast food, but impossibly slow service, even if the restaurant is 3/4 empty. There's no reason it should take 20 minutes to make a milkshake. To further infuriate you, they will serve the rest of your food first, then you wait for your shake, so you're guaranteed to have cold fries and a cold burger. Ridiculous. read more

The shakes here are the best. My favorite is the banana pudding. If all you get to eat is a shake, it's worth the trip. The food is not bad either. My experience with cookout was worse than 1 star. We got to the order station after waiting 35 minutes and then got greeted with an attitude. The workers always seem to have a nasty attitude no matter how nice and understanding the customers are. We ordered and the lady didn't answer for a good minute and a half. So I asked her if she got everything and she said "Yea, I got everything" with an attitude. So we waited another 5 minutes to get to the window and were greeted with the same attitude from a lady with long red nails, long black hair, false lashes and dark eyeshadow. She told us that they didn't get our order and she didn't know what WE did wrong. So I told her that the lady we spoke to said she had everything and she proceeded with an attitude about what we did wrong and slammed the window shut. Where else can you go for a super cheap..super filling fast food meal with plenty of choices. We always get the cookout trays at $5 bucks it's more food than you need but can't beat the price! We usually get the double burgers...Add cheese & make it steak style (always juicy and pretty typical for a greasy fast food joint but somehow it's irresistible when you're hungry at 2a). Bacon wrap is a must and the quesadilla,chicken wrap and Cajon fries are top picks for the 2nd side. Listen, Cook Out isn't trying to be something it's not. What it is trying to be is exactly what it is. Cook Out is fast food, so it should be rated on that scale. Don't go to Cook Out looking for a gourmet meal. I first fell in love with Cook Out during many trips to North Carolina. It got to be kind of a treat when we were there or passing through. When I was living in Clemson, SC, Cook Out had just begun to expand to other states, and we got a huge Cook Out just a few months before I left town. When returning back to Lynchburg, I missed it. Cook Out is not the kind of food you go get often, but, quite frankly, I don't think any fast food should be. Unfortunately, I feel like Cook Out gets a bad rap, like it's subpar. I think Burger King is subpar. I guess depending on what you get at Cook Out, some of the food might not seem legit. OK, so, I honestly haven't had everything on the menu, not even close, but that's only because I've found what I like and I stick with it, so here's my favorites: 1. If you're going to Cook Out, really, you just need to get a tray. It's an exceptional value. Depending on what Cook Out you visit, you'll pay somewhere in the $4-5 range for a main entree (typically a sandwich), two sides, and a drink. You can also upgrade to a milkshake for $1 more. 2. The grilled chicken sandwiches and burgers are legit. None of this fake meat stuff. I honestly, 9 times out of 10 get the Cajun Chicken Sandwich which is a grilled chicken breast which looks and tastes like it was COOKED OUT (get it?), smothered in Texas Pete, on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. They have other variations of this sandwich, but the Cajun is my favorite. The same is true for the burgers. Listen -- if you get a Cook Out tray, you can get a single or a double hamburger for the same price . . . soo . . . get the double. The burgers also have different "styles" you can choose from as far as toppings/flavors. 3. The sides: I almost always get fries because of the portion you get. GET THE CAJUN SEASONING . . trust me. I also love their onion rings, it's just sad that you only get 4 or 5. The coleslaw is pretty standard. I don't really care for their hushpuppies or chicken nuggets, but, yes, those are also options. FOR A SIDE. Haha, my husband always gets the quesadillas or the wraps. It's unbelievable that these count as side items. 4. In the drink category, Cheerwine is always popular because it's kinda a NC thing, so it's a novelty in other states. Lynchburg's Fanta isn't carbonated, which is a bummer if you're wanting an orange soda. I typically serve myself an unsweet tea with a splash of sweet. I don't do a whole lot of soft drinks. 5. The milkshakes . . . more like blizzards. I think Cook Outs milkshakes are way too sweet, but you get a pretty large cup for the price, and the possibilities are simply endless. They have over 30 on the board, but you can also customize it to whatever you'd like to have. Just make sure you get a spoon. All in all, it's cheap food that tastes pretty good and is a nice treat from time to time. The staff are always friendly and the service is generally quick. If we ever move from this area of the country, it will certainly be missed. Also, they're open super late, especially on the weekends, which is perfect if you're needing a post-bar or super late night meal and everything else except McD's is open. read more

Cook Out gets four stars for being SUPER CHEAP. I got the tray, I picked a big double burger and added cheese, fries, corndog, and a big sweet tea all for $5.46. The burger is almost equivalent to Five Guys and it is char-grilled. The fries were good as well as the corndog. I did wait in the drive thru line for 20 minutes but for that price it was worth the wait. Good food at cheap prices, win win!! read more

Heard a lot about Cookout and this was my first time in. Be advised, it is a bit different ordering here as opposed to McDonalds or Burger King. You get what you ask for. I ordered a burger combo with lettuce, tomato and onion. That is what I got... No mayo. No mustard. My mistake. The food was pretty good. The bun was cold, but I have been places where that is normal. Fries were good, too. Since the combo comes with two sides, I ordered the chicken nuggets. These were ok, but definitely not Chic-Fil-A. What made me drop the points to three stars was that it took 15 min. to get the meal. Most of these restaurants seem to be popular, thus the long lines, but 15 minutes is still a bit long for fast food. I will give the new one in Norfolk a try when I get back home. Was in Cook Out at the same time as the Tom H. that left a poor review. Because he left a untrue account of the events, I thought it only fair to tell the story from the perspective as a bystanding customer. The water from the machine was mixed with the pink lemonade. The manager told him to make sure he was using the water button and not the pink lemonade button. After it didn't work, the workers got water from the fountain machine in the back. This did not satisfy the enraged, irrational customer. He demanded they fix the machine. He then went on for 30 minutes yelling at the manager and workers. Cook Out is hands down one of the best fast food restaurants in existence. A region chain from the Carolinas, it's finally making it's way northward and has thankfully reached the great college town of Lynchburg, Virginia. And it's certainly showing. I went there last night, a week or two after it opened, and this unobtrusive fast food restaurant had employees directing parking, a drive-through line wrapped around the building twice, and a line inside snaking throughout the whole restaurant. And for good reason: the food is cheap, the food is excellent, and the food includes some of the most amazing milkshakes that money can buy. They are rich, they are thick (they give you both a spoon and a straw, but you can probably throw away the straw), and they come in 40 different flavors. Milkshake excellence. Burgers, corn dogs, fries, and more are the bulk of the menu, and they aren't to be missed either. All of this comes at rock bottom prices; you can probably walk out with an entire meal for around 5 bucks, and that's hard to beat unless you're getting dreck from McDonalds. Stopped by today for the first visit at 11:15 AM, it was packed inside and out. Went through the drive-thru, missed the order station, as I was watching others pull out from the parking spaces, got to the pick-up window and asked if I coulkd place my order. The employees were very nice and helpful (I had 5 orders), they took them and quickly filled them correctly. My mistake for missing the order station but the crew responded with excellent customer service towards me and others that were waiting.
