A true gem of the city. I have been going here since my children were little and it has never changed. The food is delicious and you must have the meat sauce on rice. I love that it's a hole in the wall and has that vibe of an old school luncheonette with its worn Formica bar and vinyl barstools (only about 10 seats at the counter and two small tables for 2-3 at the back). When two of us arrived at noon there was only one other diner who wandered in and claimed a table. We sat at the counter and were quickly given menus and water by the one-woman show who served and cooked and answered the phone. About 20 minutes later another woman arrived and assisted her, although the second person didn't seem to interact directly with diners, maybe due to language barrier. We ordered two plates-half chicken w/ rice and meat sauce and country salad ($9.35) and lunch special of one imperial roll w meat sauce rice and salad ($7.50). The first woman began putting marinated quartered chicken pieces on the grill, and imperial rolls into the dark, bubbling depths of the fryer. That murky oil had seen better days for sure. Before we knew it, every seat in the house was taken and phone order after order kept ringing in. The one- woman show handled it all without breaking a sweat, only to occasionally order the second lady to do this or that. 15 minutes after we ordered our food came. The chicken should have been the star, but sadly it lacked flavor except for the charred smoky bits. I didn't detect any sweetness or tang or even much salt. The imperial roll was crisp and tasted somewhat gamy, and the small cup of sweet sauce did little to perk it up so a squirt of sriracha was in order. The salad was just okay-it would have benefited from vinegar but the only condiments on hand were the sriracha and a Trader Joe's pink salt grinder-which we also used for the vaguely spaghetti meat sauce quality of the red sauce on the rice. I would not return due to the unremarkable flavors and the out of the way neighborhood. I love that these two women run the operation seemingly without help from anyone else. I also love the old school nature of the establishment. But in the end if the food doesn't draw you back, it's a bummer. You don't come here for something fancy or a wide variety, you come here for good quality, authentic Vietnamese food cooked on a hot grill right in front of you. The food is delicious and you get a lot for a cheap price. This isn't vegetarian friendly but there is one or two options if you aren't overly picky about everything being cooked in the same oil and on the same grill. I had the veggie noodle salad which came with two fried vegetarian rolls and between the noodles, vegetables and the sauce, it was amazing and I couldn't even finish it. I would happily come back for this dish again. There might be a bit of a wait, you're lucky if the restaurant can seat 10 people, so come during off-hours. Divey dingy is exactly how I love my Vietnamese food. This place is awesome and a neighborhood gem! I got lunch takeout on the later side of lunch so the place was practically empty. It was a lot of food-- I got the famed #5. The chicken was charred and delicious. The pork was well seasoned, sliced thin, and delicious. The gravy/meat sauce was new to me but I loved it on the rice. The imperial roll was okay-- I'm picky about them, but it was still greasy and tasty. The ladies who run the place are nice and efficient. It was about $20 including tax and tip, and it turned into two meals. The place is tiny and always packed when I walk by in the evenings around early dinner time. I probably would pop by more often if not for the line and since they are cash only. I like hole in the walls, greasy spoons, and dives frequented by lots of regulars, but I really don't like raw chicken. Don't get me wrong - I prefer my chicken just barely cooked, and I think that the overwhelming majority of places overcook their chicken. I don't mind if the chicken is a little pink, but I definitely don't like it raw and bloody. I ordered the Combo #4 which included a half chicken, country salad, meat sauce, and rice. The half chicken came in two parts - the leg and thigh were slightly undercooked - and I'm totally cool with that. It actually tasted pretty good. The breast and wing were kind of raw. Even the wing was kind of pink. The breast meat had the cool slimy texture of raw chicken and I had the taste of bloody chicken in my mouth afterwards. Gross! Although most of the other reviewers said that their meal was cooked to order, the chicken most certainly is not cooked to order. Anyone who has cooked chicken on the bone before knows that it takes awhile to cook it, so many restaurants just reheat the chicken on the grille before serving, and Cordon Bleu is no exception. They actually keep the pre-cooked chicken in a tray under the counter about 6 inches from the floor, which is also pretty gross. The owner is very friendly, and nearly all the other customers were regulars who greeted to the owner by name, speaking in English or Cantonese. Cordon Bleu is a little piece of perfection on California St, right off of Polk. It's tucked away, and you can easily stroll pass it, but it is 100% worth the visit. The restaurant is small, and only has a couple small tables and bar seating. I'd advise either getting there early in the night, being prepared to wait, or calling for takeout. Once seated, you can watch the magic happening -- delicious five spice chicken, shish kabobs, and imperial rolls are cooked right in front of your eyes before being served up. My personal go-to is the #5 special, because nothing beats getting 2-3 meals worth of food (for me) for ~$12. Not the most aesthetically pleasing meal you'll ever eat, but it's DELICIOUS. The special comes with five spice chicken, shish kabob meat, an imperial roll, salad, and white rice + meat sauce. Tbh - not entirely sure what's in the meat sauce, but it's borderline life changing. Everything I've tried here has been delicious though, so there's little chance of being disappointed. It's incredible when served hot, but also pretty mouth watering the next day as well. My only gripe is that I tend to crave five spice chicken on Sunday nights, and can't satisfy that craving until the following Tuesday, since it's closed on Sunday and Monday. Hands down, new favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the city. I totally understand the hype now. This joint doesn't serve classic Vietnamese dishes like pho or bun bo hue, but they specialize in smoked chicken. The food is simple, but sometimes, that's the best kind of food you can get. My recommendation is to order over the phone and pick it up to eat at home, as there's limited seating and it's quite a cramped space. Let's be real, is it really a legit Viet restaurant unless it's small and grimy? I got the #4 and for $10.30, it's such a great deal. I only ate half because they give you so much food. Also, the meat sauce mixed with the fish sauce is insane. Would highly recommend that you try it out, especially if you live nearby. Not only does it have the ultimate hole-in-the-wall vibes (I'm not even sure there was a light turned on when we were inside), but the portions are huge and the food is delicious. OK, this was not the place I expected. I was taking the California Street cable car one night expecting to enter a regular restaurant with formica tables, naugahyde chairs, surly waiters, and a sun-faded poster of the Eiffel Tower half-torn on the wall. You know, like Sam Wo's reborn. But I guess I wasn't really in the Tenderloin, and real estate is clearly at more of a premium on Nob Hill. Surely that's the explanation for the walk-in closet that is Cordon Bleu on California near Polk Street. It reminds me of any number of greasy diners in New York like Johny's Luncheonette (no second 'n' please) where the counter is pretty much your only alternative other than the large-group tables in the back. It was pretty crowded when I entered but not fully. Because a couple of mouthy hipsters decided to hog three stools between them, I stood against the wall waiting for an opening. They were so self-absorbed that it took a five full minutes before one of them acknowledged I was perhaps wanting to use the stool to eat and only after leaving his money (cash only). Thanks dudes...hope the cable car doesn't run you over when you jaywalk across the street. The two women who run the place pay no attention to such matters... they have a grill to master and rice to scoop. I grabbed one of the few well-used, laminated menus on the counter and started to peruse. Lemme see... there are five combo plate entrees, four house specials, and on the other side of the menu, four veggie options. The choices struck me as more pan-Asian than strictly Vietnamese... kinda Korean by way of Saigon with a heavy emphasis on country comfort food, in other words, pure catnip for budget-conscious slackers. I decided to order the $9 Number Five, which consisted of a Five-Spice Roast Chicken Leg, "Shish Kebab" (without a stick and served in thin slices Korean-style), a large Imperial Roll chopped and heavily deep-fried, a "Country Salad" (a.k.a. shredded lettuce with some dressing), and the mysteriously described "Meat Sauce on Rice" (see photo). Ironically it was this latter item that turned out to be the most satisfying component if only because it sopped up the drippings from the other four items. I still couldn't tell what kind of meat I was eating, but it was sloppy-Joe-good. The shish kebab and chicken were a tad overcooked for my taste, even though that didn't stop me from devouring either one. Despite the tasty filling, the roll was just way too crunchy-greasy to eat comfortably without having nightmares of a coronary where I would have to lay down on the dirty-plate-covered counter since there would be no room for a gurney in there. OK, I'd still probably come back, give more explicit stink-eye to the entitled hipsters, and try to decode the meat sauce again. That fully burnt chicken leg got put on my plate and served to me. This was after she picked it up and looked at the burnt piece for a bit and then proceeded to peel off the skin (because IT WAS SO BURNT). She then tried to cover up the missing skin with their gravy sauce. I do not mind charred meat because I actually like that taste, but I tried to eat the chicken and it tasted like charcoal and ash. I asked for a new piece, which she was annoyed at (the new piece was grilled to perfection). The grill is out in the open so you can see exactly what is being grilled and I saw her burn another piece during my time there and again, gave it to the customer. The Chef, server, cashier was just one woman, superwoman. Service may take a bit longer, and it may appear she's lost, but she's not. I watched her give people their bills verbally doing all the calculations in her head. In the midst of cooking, serving, answering phones for the endless to go orders, greeting people, taking orders and more she managed to stay calm and friendly not rushing any of her customers. I was impressed and I was totally distracted until I realized she was cooking my food. She is methodical with her ways. Food was bountiful and delicious! We will go back. Cordon Bleu is the most auspicious temple of the "Imperial Roll", or what I would call CHA GIO in most other Vietnamese restaurants. However, the name, Imperial Roll, may be quite appropriate since the Cordon Bleu's version is the best I have ever eaten, and I've been to quite a few boites that serve these ubiquitous rolls. The Golden Deli in San Gabriel near Los Angeles comes close, but it too falls short of the greatness achieved in this very modest "dive" on California Street between Polk and Larkin. I always pay homage to this temple whenever I make my trek up north. This cha gio is dense, packed with thin glass noodles, rough ground, spiced pork, carrots and onions and garlic. The Vietnamese version of the "egg roll" is superior to the Chinese ones since the wrapper is made from a thin rice "skin" which frys up ever so crisp and light. When taken immediately out of the fryer, the fried crisp skin almost shatters in between the teeth, and the breaking open of the roll releases a garlicly, black peppery, spiced aroma that, to me, is equivalent to ambrosia of the Gods. I always do take out since I can then go around the corner to Common Sage on 1552 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109 (b/t California St & Sacramento St.) in Nob Hill to get some beer like Orion, Echigo Koshihikari, Ebisu, Ginga Ko-gen, etc. since the combination of these two elegantly concocted food and drink is positively mind-blowing to use an old, hoary expression from the late 1960's. San Francisco has some really amazing restaurants. Gary Danko comes to mind. But for the price, Cordon Bleu's Imperial Roll is beyond words. You gotta put one in your mouth to know what I mean. This plate was more than enough to feed two people. I have absolutely no complaints about anything on my plate...the chicken was good. Dropped by literally after the gym. Was one of my go to places while I am here in SF. I've been to Vietnam a couple times, and for them to say that its the best chicken outside of Vietnam is a pretty big statement. Boy did they live up to it. I got a #5, but unfortunately I came late one night and they were out of rice! I never thought that could happen. I substituted it for the noodle instead. The portions were very pretty big for the price and it was actually very affordable. It is a relatively a small location however can fit more people than I thought it could so about 10-15 people give or take. It was pretty awkward trying to speak to the employees in Vietnamese only for them to tell me that they don't haha. I thought I could because they do serve Vietnamese cuisine, but I guess I was wrong. First impression: Did I get transported to Asia? You're elbow to elbow with other customers if you take on the diner seating. If you're lucky to get one of the two tables, you will be practically sitting in another diner's lap. Which may or may not be a good thing. A similar situation can be found in the bathroom. The sink is almost hanging above the toilet bowl and you're nudging the walls with your elbows. This is a divey joint. I came out smelling like I bathed in five spice chicken. Expect to shower immediately upon getting home. This is not to say that it's not clean. When we were seated at the table, they wiped it twice, vigorously, with a wet towel then dried it with a paper napkin. Service was fast and friendly. Strangely enough, the table next to us thought it would make a good date place. Probably because they were Polk Street hobos. Just kidding. The couple was super lovey dovey in a we-haven't-done-the-horizontal-hokey-pokey kind of way. I hope the guy didn't think he was going to seal the deal with this place. Who knows, maybe five spice chicken turns her on. I wasn't impressed with the food. The chicken was good. The meat sauce is reminiscent of the sauce you get with HK style baked pork chops over rice. Basically, tomatoey sauce (to solve the mystery of the "mystery meat sauce", this would be tomato paste, chicken broth, onion, garlic, salt, sugar). The staff are Cantonese (probably from/lived in Vietnam, which isn't uncommon). The best thing on the menu is the imperial roll. Hole in the wall spot when you want quantity over quality. Cash only, the staff here is very nice but don't expect any bells or whistles. They take your food and drink order and deliver it to you promptly. I got the #5 and some of the shish kebab was a bit over cooked. It's cut very thin almost like jerky. The chicken was nice and moist and imperial roll was huge. I loved how crispy and lightly sour the slaw was. The meat red sauce left much to be desired as other uses mentioned. I saw other people with beers so I'm assuming it was byob. Pretty small joint might, good for lunch or take out orders. read more

I think this is one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco. Maybe 50 some years old with different owners but I always Vietnamese. it's a small place but there's also take out. the red gravy rice is some thing I always seek out. Location/Parking: Nob Hill, SF Wait: No wait for seating for an early dinner for a solo/2 person party. However, since there are only 1-2 people working, expect to wait 10-20min longer for food (after ordering) during peak meal/takeout times. Atmosphere: Small place with short stools overlooking the Asian ladies making your meal. There are also 2-3 small tables for 2-4 in the back, though they are pretty cramped. This is one of those places to grab your good and inexpensive food, eat, and go without expecting too much service and ambiance. Menu: Small and simple selection of meat and rice combos, but highlights are definitely their Five-Spice Chicken and Imperial Rolls! Food: Large portions for the price! And HUGGEE Imperial Rolls are such a plus. Service: Self-serve water, physically wave down the ladies if you really need something! Price: Less than $10.50 for a generous rice and meat combo plate with imperial rolls! Honestly I would even just go for 2 orders of the $3.50 Imperial Rolls even if I wasn't hungry. Overall: Definitely worth coming for solid Vietnamese meat and rice plates (especially when your friend group has had a lot to smoke...lol). For the price and portion, the food is really good! The lunch specials are all under 8 dollars and provide lots of food! It's definitely a hole in the wall with a tiny staff and limited seating, but the staff is really nice and do their best. Upon seeing reviews, I was a little scared seeing that the woman cooking was using the same thongs to handle all of the food, but at least they were all meat. For the price, you can't really complain about sanitary issues. My only issue is that they are kind of disorganized and some of the "kebabs" are definitely over cooked, but they really try their best! I highly suggest going here for lunch, but don't expect fine dining! read more

I haven't written a Yelp review in some years, and normally don't review places anymore. I also want to preface this by saying that I am sensitive to what I am doing, given that this is a family and ethnically-owned small business serving a low-income community, and that it is a long-standing business that has been part of the San Francisco landscape for some time, and all of that makes me feel uneasy about the review I am writing. I will say that the food is affordable, the portions are generous, and it is good flavor (3-4 stars for that). However, the open kitchen set-up allowed me to see things that I cannot unsee. My central complaint is that the practices in place at this restaurant are profoundly unhygienic. The whole place is kind of grotty and just not very clean. The grill on which most food is cooked is caked with food-not with today's, but many days or weeks or more old. The chef used the same tongs for raw and cooked meat indiscriminately, as well as to pass a filthy rag over the grill to 'clean it'. She also handled money, dirty dishes, raw meat without any semblance of washing her hands. Some food items were kept, if not on the floor, than very close by my assessment. Many items on the counter and elsewhere simply looked as if they had not been wiped down, let alone thoroughly clean, in months if not years. All in all, this place may be a fixture of the community. The food is quite passable and cheap. But I don't believe this place passes muster from a food hygiene perspective, not by a long shot. I'm concerned that the cooks may be exposing their customers and themselves to illness. And that is unacceptable. I'm not sure why the SFDPH allows this place to continue operating. read more
