I've had an empanada from here twice now and they're delicious. I can't compare it to any others…read morebecause I've never had these Filipino kind of empanadas before, but I assume they're kind of the same? The ones from ilocos empanadas are deep fried. The inside is filled with cabbage, yellow peas, pork and an egg. With the vinegar sauce drizzled on top....man I found myself dreaming about one the other day. Now why 3 stars? This is the most inefficient food establishment I've ever been to. 1. They never answer their phones. I kinda get it. I mean if you're hard at work making the empanadas for customers in front of you, why would you take time to answer the phone for more orders you can't fill. I called once and they said they weren't taking orders for the next 3 hours because they were so backed up. 2. They don't open on time. I was there about 30 minutes after opening time one day and they were closed so I left. They also turn people away and I heard this one guy complaining that he came all the way from Hawai'i Kai. 3. Both times I came here, I waited over 45 mins. While I was watching them, it seems like they can only make about 12 empanadas an hour. That's less than $100 gross. 4. They only take cash and Venmo. I tried paying with a $50 one time because that's all the cash I had. They didn't have change. If you're only going to take cash, then don't you think you should be able to make change?? One of the other customers felt bad and made me change. So nice, but not their responsibility. These are all the rage now with Brerman Rock's TikTok's about this other lady in Waipahu who sells them. They are quite delicious, and I will come back for them because I love crunchy, savory, vinegary bites of handheld food lol. But mannnn I hope they can figure out a better system. Because the way it is now seems very unsustainable. The people here working (I've seen 3 people working the truck at any given time) are nice I guess. But for some reason it doesn't seem genuine. Idk how to explain it. They wait for the customer to approach them and usually just say something negative. It's like the customer has to convince them that they're good enough for an empanada. Idk. It's just a food truck. There are a bunch of shared picnic tables between 4 or 5 food trucks in a parking lot, so there is not really a nice ambiance. Take your empanadas to go!

One of them suggested Lacoy's and since I had read about them through the page, I also wanted to go too! They open at 11:30 and you can drive through this gate, when it's open, into the parking lot. My crazy @$$, drove along the side of the building and went to where they were. The owner, Shawna, told us we needed to wait in the parking lot. LOL! When she said they were ready, we ordered the shrimp and the bbq chicken. Since it was Wednesday, we got the special which came with all the sides. The chicken was sooooooo tender! The shrimp were nice and crispy! Loved the mac n cheese and those greens with the bacon... Soooooooo good! Nice butter corn and cornbread! Oh, and we got lumpia too...and you need to go early or they will be sold out! Shawna also gave a sample of the shrimp and catfish while we were waiting. That was really nice of her. I was at the recent Night Market at Kaka'ako and this food truck caught my eye with their…read moreinteresting combo plates. They also looked good for value for the money as you get a lot of food! I decided on the Nothing Mayjah plate that had teriyaki beef, mac salad, two shrimp tempura, 3 pork hash, and fried noodles which covered the whole bottom of the plate. The actual plate looked very similar to the sample ones they had on a table in front the truck. The teriyaki beef slices had good flavor but were a bit dry as they were cooked ahead of time. The Mac salad had tuna and corn in it which was different. The shrimp tempura didn't seem to have well defined pieces of shrimp inside, more like batter with bits of ground up and reformed shrimp. The pork hash were great with good flavor. The noodles covered the whole bottom of the plate (no rice) and had green onions, char siu, and kamaboko. Unfortunately the noodles were bland and could have used more seasoning. I still enjoyed the plate and you can't beat the amount of food you get for the price. If a few things were improved on they would get 5 stars! I'd be happy to try other plates from them and see if the quality varies.

First, the staff is always so kind, accommodating, and patient. If you're ever on the fence, they're always so willing to help guide you in the right direction to give you the best poke experience. Although they've only got a few flavors of Poke, it's perfectly enough! They give you a hefty amount of rice and poke with every bowl; I always have some left over every time and their poke flavors are always SO amazing, regardless of what combination you choose (although, I would recommend their Gingah and Spicy Shoyu together). Although I love their bowls, I would absolutely recommend getting their pound of poke deal. You can divvy up the weight of poke any way you want, so usually my husband and I get a quarter of a different flavor poke and just make our rice at home--the only downside to doing this is that you don't get the fun toppings (furikake and crunchy mochi). Also, just a disclaimer, their space is extremely small with limited bar-type seating, so plan to take your bowl/food to go if you want to be comfortable. The only reason why I'm docking 1 star is because unfortunately, some of their toppings are a little too expensive to add on for the amount that you get. Other than that, Ryder's will not disappoint--I promise! I always recommend this Poke Shop to all of our visitors and I'm not stopping now--try Ryder's out if you're in the area!
