From top to bottom it was a disappointing experience dining at the Country Inn Cafe. The service was incredibly slow, turning what should have been a relatively quick meal of simple dishes into an hour-a-half-saga. When the food did finally arrive my order of Swedish Crepes was burnt to an crisp, with parts of the crepe literally cracking like a chip when I tried to move it. I can't remember the last time I had to send food back to the kitchen to be remade but I'm sure I won't soon forget this experience. To make matters worse, they treat the lingonberry butter like a scarce natural resource, only providing you with two tiny plastic cups worth to go with four crepes, a frankly unacceptable ratio. While the crepes were overcooked, the hashbrowns that were ordered by others at my table were significantly undercooked, ever-so-lightly browned on the outside and barely even warm anywhere past the surface. Even the food that was cooked adequately was underwhelming to say the least. The scrambles and omelettes looked less like restaurant-quality dishes, and more like something any regular person might throw together before having to rush out the door. If the price was great I might be willing to look past the slow service and the cooking faux-pas, but at the rates they are charging I expect, and the customers certainly deserve, something much better. read more

I love coming to Country Inn for breakfast when I am in town. Something noteworthy and appreciated is that they don't up charge for things like Swedish pancakes or splitting the meat options 50/50. I was able to get bacon and sausage with my eggs and hash browns. I was also able to get the Swedish pancakes without any additional charge. The service is good and the food is satisfying. I grew up coming here and it always nice to pay a visit when I can. We've been here a few times and have always enjoyed our meals. It's a very casual place and not noisy at all every time we've been here for breakfast or lunch. You can sit at the counter and watch sports on TV, sit at a table/booth, or sit outside in their covered patio. And we've always been seated right away. I got the Chicken Apple Sausage with eggs over easy and hash browns and got it with a pancake. Very good! If you like spicy salsa, besides The Pepper Plant hot pepper sauce they provide in the bottle, ask for their housemade salsa. It's does have a spicy kick to it. what happened to this place? This was a staple growing up and when I visit the SJ. Svc; 1star. We were seated almost immediately which was nice. It was Saturday morning and I had to go to the Electrify America station to charge the car. After I got the car plugged in, there was a little voice that said to go over to the Country Inn Café you just passed and treat yourself to a nice breakfast. Now usually when I have gone out for breakfast it has been with the family. So was this little voice an angel encouraging me to go and relax and rejuvenate with some "me time". Or was it a little devil that wanted me to go and take pictures of what I ate to show them what daddy did without them. I think it was a little bit of both. What I really liked was that they had this very nice open outdoor dining area. My waitress was very nice and friendly. She explained to me that this used to be one of Holder's Country Inn restaurants but it was under different ownership but had the same menu. So I ordered my usual eggs over easy, bacon, sliced tomatoes and Swedish pancakes (with that wonderful lingonberry butter). And yep, it was just as awesome as the other Country Inn restaurants. The star of the show was the Swedish pancakes. I could just eat these until I pass out. Overall both the food and service were fantastic. I highly recommend it. read more

The Country Inn is a hidden gem in Almaden. It has just opened for dinner three nights a week Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. It is also open during the day for breakfast and lunch. The food is very good and has a large selection of options to fit all kinds of customer's tastes. The servings are pretty large so you can take home food enough for another meal at home! The service is excellent with the staff very friendly. The owner and staff are very welcoming. You can dine outside in the newly remodeled patio which is very roomy. A small bar has been made available inside the restaurant with 2 TVs to watch. It has a nice home town atmosphere very relaxed and casual with all ages able to find what they want to eat. The kids menu is very good too. So stop in and lets keep local restaurants like this one in business! read more

This is one of my favorite breakfast restaurants in the San Jose area. The Holder family seems to own several restaurants in the bay area. I've been to some of their earlier versions, back when I was a kid, such as Uncle John's Pancakes and others. This location has been around quite a while, and has had fairly consistent food & service. The Country Inn on Monterey Hwy. had horrible service, and I would drive well out of my way to avoid it, and come to this location in Almaden, instead. I would typically get an omelet with bacon (they used to make one with tomatoes & bacon), and I now sometimes get the Florentine omelet, which is huge, and I usually take half or more of it home for the next day. It comes with hashbrowns and pancakes or toast. I always choose the Swedish Pancakes as the option, as they are delicious with their lingonberry butter. The last couple of times that I have been here the Swedish Pancakes/Crepes have been a different color, and a slightly different consistency that is not as good, and not as many lingonberries in the butter, so they are not as sweet. It used to be a few dollars more to get the omelet with the included side of Swedish Pancakes, than if you ordered just the Swedish Pancakes. Prices have gone up, so there is now about a $7 difference. But, I end up with 2 breakfasts out of it, and it is tasty, so that is still my usual order here. They also make a very nice Eggs Benedict. I have had their Strawberry Waffle, and their Joe's Special, and their Chili Omelet, their Garden Omelet, & their Apple Harvest Salad, and all have been very tasty. I was not a fan of their Salmon Omelet. It tasted a bit off, or fishy, or too salty. Something was off for me. They used to serve dinner, and did things like a very reasonable dinner on Valentine's Day with steak & lobster, and a free slice of cake, which was nice if you didn't want to go places that were jammed with people, and wanted something different. Unfortunately, they told us they had trouble hiring people to stay open for longer hours, so they shortened their service to the day only. They are charging $6.50 for coffee or tea, which I find high -- especially for a cafe. It brings your bill up much higher, especially if you are ordering a side of bacon, or something similar to your meal. I usually drink lemon and water, but like to have tea or coffee at times, and their pricing makes me sometimes avoid it, as I would then be well over $30 for breakfast. A few annoyances: I used to ask for the Berry syrup for the Swedish pancakes. Their family restaurants have always had a large selection of pancakes, and used to always have an array of syrups. They don't seem to always have that anymore, or I have been given a little cup with blueberry pie filling before, instead of syrup.... For what started as a pancake house, they don't seem to have their options in play any more. Now I just very lightly sprinkle some maple syrup, so that it doesn't overpower the berry flavor from the butter, which has also now become less berry-tasting. I often ordered hot tea, which I put sugar and milk or cream in. The silver tea pitchers, that contains the hot water, has lids that are scorching hot, even with the small silver knob that you are supposed to open it with, to put your tea bag in. You have to use sugar packets to touch the lid knob to open it. Many of them are missing the knob, as well, so you have to open the lid from the rim, where you can be scorched by the steam. This is a breakfast/lunch coffee shop!!! It's what you should be the experts at! They should be able to provide proper tea dispensers. It is ridiculous, and makes them look completely inadequate. Also, asking for milk or cream for the tea seems to stump them sometimes. I have been given milk in a glass to pour into the tea. Again, this is supposedly an area that should be your expertise! Have the proper containers, little cream/milk pitchers or the sealed plastic cream cups that are often on tables. It looks like they have never had customers requesting milk or cream with their tea or coffee. It seems confusing to them. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I don't understand these areas of confusion or lack of correct serving tools for their niche, but I will still give them 5 stars, as I have enjoyed my meals there, and this location has usually had decent service, has easy parking, and has been fairly consistent.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But I do feel I want to offer to be their Buyer, and purchase the correct serving tools, to give customers an enjoyable tea/coffee experience. This is a good spot for some comfort food. They have a nice outdoor patio that is completely shaded. The service is excellent. The food is decent. We were seated immediately on a Saturday morning. They bring coffee and water over immediately. Within about 5 minutes, someone is refilling our coffee. They were almost too efficient. Our server asked if we wanted boxes before we were even finished eating. I like efficiency, but I can see how people might feel like they were being rushed; but I didn't feel that way. What we ordered: + Country combo - 2 eggs any style (I got scrambled), hash browns, sausage or bacon (I got sausage), and toast or pancakes (I got pancakes). A very basic breakfast. Food was decent, nothing overwhelming. I prefer my pancakes fluffier, but I thought these were not bad. + Country Inn skillet - eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, potatoes, and cheese. Served with toast or pancakes. From the description, you'd think this was very meaty, but it was mostly potatoes. Tasted pretty good, but too many large potatoes. read more

I have been to a few country inn locations (first experience was 15-20 years ago). I know what to expect. This was my first time trying this location. This location served the worst food I've received. I ordered the country fried steak breakfast plate. Everything about it was disgusting. Potatoes were still frozen. Eggs were so over cooked they're brown. Steak was all batter and I could taste the raw flour. Not even hot sauce could save it. They are trying to cut corners on the butter that comes with the Swedish pancakes. Zero fruit bits inside. Literally unsalted butter. For a $20 plate-GTFOH. It was inedible and threw everything out.
