I was expecting a country diner kind of experience, and that's what I got I love the decorum, and when you walk in the dessert case has lots of great desserts with dates on them. I am liking them already. Super nice staff and a very up front an uncomplicated breakfast menu, what a concept. I ordered the omelet, subbed bacon for sausage, light cheese. Wow. HUGE. Tasty, but definitely for two, seriously. Especially if you factor in the potatoes cooked to perfection and the four halves of toast, I needed a forklift to get me out of there. Now, I will say, not heavily seasoned, which is the right way to do it. I cover everything in hot sauce anyway and don't want tons of seasoning. Especially salt, and I felt the only salt I was getting was the 1/2lb of meat in my omelet (lol). No need make potatoes salty. Kudos folks. This is the restaurant within Cousins Country Inn. The food here is always very good. I've had salads, halibut, pot roast, turkey dinners and dessert here. All are high quality and a great meal. You can eat in the bar or restaurant. The bar serves peanuts in a bucket at the table. Shells go on the floor. Be prepared for the animal sounds as you enter and leave through the door. Meh. I've experienced better. It's really convenient to stay at Cousins and have a family restaurant near by, however, the food isn't so great. The decor is kinda fun, "IF" your into that country feel. I think it's pricey for what you get, but again, your paying for the atmosphere. I had a really grumpy waiter that kind of ruined the whole "Cousins" atmosphere for me. She didn't understand that I didn't want pork in my meal, so she got a little huffy and wanted to charge me more to change the order. My girlfriend and I check into one of their suites. It was first class. Great amenities, clean, details attended to. Plenty of towels. View and just off from the pool. It is large and roomy. Comfortable bed and bedding. A fireplace and big screen TV. I was greeted like returning family at the front desk by all, got me some great complimentary coffee, and looked around. Its a large property that seems full, The bar and restaurant were packed. The girf shop had fun quirky items. Employee's call you "Hi Cousin." Nice touch. Finished with a huge breakfast. Well as always when traveling, lunchtime rolled around and with three hungry mouths to feed we decided on Cousin's in The Dalles. It looked like we could get one here, and it was next door to the Chevron I was getting gas at. It was early Sunday evening and there was a 20 minute wait. Gift shop in the front with some cool Oregonian souvenirs and candy, shirts, etc. Farm decor all about including a John Deere tractor inside the dining area. Heard some barnyard animal sounds by the front door. Staff was super nice. Our server greeted us with, "Hello, Cousins!" We were referred to as Cousins the whole time. My burger with bacon and cheese was perfect. Standard diner burger size, but the patty was juicy, the bun was grilled with a great butter flavor, and their homemade thousand island-type sauce was an epic finishing touch. They didn't over-laden it with veggies. Fries were awesome and my cousin-server kept my coke filled up. My mom had a fish dinner (don't remember what it was) and said for diner seafood, it was really good. I'm glad we stopped here. We had a good time and the food and atmosphere were great. Better than expected. Very friendly wait staff but they're busy and can get a bit flustered. The only part that seems to baffle them is wanting to take food back to the room of the attached Inn- they won't let you take dishes so try and eat pancakes in a foam container- cut right thru. Spent 2 weeks on the Oregon Coast. Coming home we were starving by the time we hit Portland but had seen Cousins on the way to the coast so wanted to eat our last meal there. What a mistake. Waitress went on and on about homemade. Husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger and tator tots, he said was good. I ordered the chicken fried dinner with mash potatoes, mixed veg and roll. The chicken fried is a flat frozen chunk of yuck. Potatoes were instant or the prefrozen kind the veggies that the waitress said were sautéed in butter were wrinkled, old and I got 1 tiny piece of cauliflower and a small piece of broccoli stem along with one zucchini and wrinkled green beans. The best thing on my place was the roll and I have no idea if it was house made, came with 1 gold foil butter. $19.99. Waitress came back finally when husband was 2 bites from done. She saw my 3/4 plate and asked what was wrong. I tried politely to say this meal sucked without saying that. She just said she'd send manager over. Manager came and said all the dinners they do homemade and that my chicken fried was breaded in town somewhere....I'm thinking from the frozen section of Fred Meyers! She then leaves. 5 minutes later comes back with our check and she took $10.00 off. We tried. We won't be back. I regret not taking a picture. read more

It was an above-average burger (certainly better than fast food). The fries were over-salted. And I'm not one of these "salt is poison" people. I like my food well-seasoned... but not over-seasoned. My advice to the kitchen is that guests can always add salt at the table, so back off a bit. The atmosphere is casual. The service is casual table service. The menu has some vegetarian options. They have a kid's menu. The place is very kid-friendly. It's just a minute or two off of I84 and has plenty of parking. Service is fast (less than 15 minutes for burger and fries at lunch rush time.) I used to come here as a kid every time my family drove to Portland. It's just one of those places you have to go to! It's perfect for families and kids love it! We sat in the saloon this time, which wasn't the same experience as sitting in the actual restaurant but still good! Our server was incredibly attentive and friendly. We had a group of 8 and he was very patient with us while we waited for everyone to arrive and then finally figure out what we wanted to order. We didn't feel rushed at all. The menu is quite large and there's so many good options. The food is pretty average, good but nothing incredibly. I think you come more for the experience. I don't know if they still do this but they used to have little plastic farm animals in kids breakfasts and I just love that. read more

Today my boyfriend and I went to Cousin's for breakfast. I was wanting pancakes. Due to food allergies to soy, I asked if their pancakes had soy in them. Our server, Nicole, asked one of her assistants to go ask. Sure enough they do have soy in them. So I decided to get the Fork and Knife plate with French fries. The manager, Oceana, came out to our table to talk with me. She let me know that the oils they cook the fries in is soy based, so they can not serve me fries, due to knowing I do have an allergy to soy, even though I said I had my epi-pen's, loratadine and benadryl on hand. They can not serve it to me for law suit reasons. Which I understand 100%. So she had them cook my burger, onions, mushrooms and hashbrowns all in a separate pan than all other foods. The chef's and managers are all trained in allergy warnings and cooking. The server's are trained to ask if you have food allergies if you request to hold something off your orders. For precaution reasons or if it's just because you don't like it. Stopped in after driving for 5 hours with 3 young kids. We waited for 15 minutes before i finally got up to find out sever. He was rude and told me he'd be with me shortly. After 10 more minutes of waiting i went up to the bar to ask for water for my kids since they were thirsty from being in a car for so long. When I arrived here, I nearly thought we were walking into a barn... It's got that Peanut Barrel type of restaurant feel. I felt so far away from Chicago, sitting inside the restaurant. I mean we were seated next to a John Deere tractor, and maybe there were haystacks around there or I could have imagined it. There's certainly a small town atmosphere, and the waitresses are like women you could see in movies. The food was good. I'm always a fan of bacon, and it's a little thicker sliced here, which I appreciated. I don't think it's pricey, but I can't compare it to any place else in town. The town seems widely stretched.
