Well I missed out on their cinnamon rolls, and didn't get to watch the complementary DVD, but I can't fault them for that. Their rooms are nice with a microwave and mini fridge. Pool and spa were kept open till 11:45pm when we were there, always a nice touch. but the bed...too small and the mattress was too hard. It was terrible food and service sucked. Mgr comped us for food. Milkshakes were melted by the time we got them. Pot roast dry and stringy. Worst dining experiance i've had in long time. Waiter was rude and walked by us twice before he acknowledged us. We go out a couple times a week wife is in food service and I managed a bar. This is an interesting place. It has an extensive down-home menu with all of the usual comfort foods served in enormous portions. And everything tastes great with gravy. It's a popular meeting place for locals. There's not a hint of kitsch or trendiness. It's unapologetically home-spun, down to the mooing cow that greets you when you open the door and the "Howdy Cousin!" from the servers. We had our dinner in the saloon, where we were immediately seated & drinks served like they already knew what we wanted! The waitress rocked and we went with her recommendations for our menu selections. I had the fish & chips, my husband, the meatloaf. Fish filets were crispy outside, tender & flaky inside and I couldn't stop eating my fries! Everything was seasoned correctly and tasty! Finished the meal with a slice of marionberry pie (I know, I shouldn't have)! It was delightful! It looked like a good place when we looked it up. took about 20 minutes to get seated. After that it took about 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us and bring water. The waiter was rude to us, but was nice to other guests next to us (if you know what I mean). He didn't check on us. HAH!! I can't believe this place is listed! YES. This place is alright, but it is a must-stop for my family every time we pass through the Dalles, which is usually on the way to the Gorge Ampitheater or to NW Idaho for vacation. So, atleast once a year we stop here. If only so my brother (now 21 years old) can loudly proclaim "FIVE COUSINS!" when they ask us how many "cousins" will be dining that day. That joke keeps us giggling until we cross the Bridge of the Gods and beyond. Oh, and so we can take the neccesary pictures straddling the fake barn animals in front of the restaurant. I usually order something safe, like a mexi omelette with a biscuit. Can't really screw that up. My brother always orders biscuits and gravy, which are good, but it's the kind of gravy that already has a skin on it and it's jiggling by the time it reaches our table. "You gotta mix up the gravy before you dig in." The food is decent diner food. It's tradition. And this place is all about tradition, and my family is one big walking tradition, so we'll always stop at Cousins on the way to Washington or Idaho. It's just what you do. read more

We were on a long drive, and The Dalles was an optimal stopping point for us. From the outside, Cousin's looks like a standard motel, and it largely is. Upon check in we were told that the room we were getting had just been renovated and that most of the others were currently getting the same treatment. Needless to say, I was curious to see what they looked like. First though, we needed to eat. The fact that they had a restaurant right on site was one of the reasons we pulled in. The desk clerk/manager proudly stated that the restaurant was the reason that Cousin's was "famous", so I had high expectations going in. Yes, everyone here does call you "cousin", which I personally found a bit odd and even off putting. Call me a city slicker, but I started to wonder when the group wedding was taking place. Still, staff was friendly and responsive. Food was a bit slow in coming, but it wasn't that busy so I wasn't surprised that they weren't working at full tilt that night. As for the food itself, it was .... ok. It wasn't bad, it was fine, but it wasn't something that would garner acclaim anywhere I've lived. It was basic, standard family restaurant fare. Nothing more. I wouldn't have thought twice about it if the restaurant hadn't been built up as something extraordinary. As we left the restaurant and moved towards our room, we walked past the pool. Again something that had been rather beamingly touted by the front desk, but in reality couldn't comfortably handle more than 6 people at a time. Now, the room. It was nice. Not exceptional, but nice. Clean, spartan but tasteful. Nice. I could see that the furniture was new, and the shower was nice and large (great for couples), but my expectations had been a bit raised at the front desk. It was a nice motel room, but not an extraordinary one. The bed was comfortable, the water was hot, and it had a nice air conditioner. There is an HDTV in the room, but the image quality was surprisingly poor. This has more to do with the signal than the screen, I'm sure. It might be more of a perk once the digital conversion goes into effect. So, ultimately, it's a nice motel. Clean, pleasant, friendly, but not extraordinary. I highly encourage people to stop of here as they travel, but don't want to raise anyone's expectations. read more

This restaurant was attached to our hotel, which was the main reason for eating there. The decor was rustic and quaint. I ordered a side of country gravy, and they brought a huge biscuit, which looked nothing like a proper country biscuit. I never asked for it, and the menu only mentioned gravy. The food was okay, but our mood soured when we noticed some fat little man in an NRA t-shirt, wandering around the place like he was on patrol, with a gun on his belt. He obviously knew the management, and they allowed him to skulk about the place like Elmer Fudd. I don't know what kind of danger he expected during breakfast on a Sunday morning, but my wife and kids were uncomfortable having to watch his cowardly display, and we didn 't know if or when he was going to freak out and shoot somebody. I don't know what training this guy has, as far as I know he's just a little troll who's never seen a fully grown woman naked. Get your gravy to go, don't make any sudden moves, and get the hell out of there. read more

We stopped in a few weeks back after an overnight backpack down The Deschutes River trail. We brought our appetites and were not disappointed! The food and service was awesome. Some delicious down home cooking. On the way in our mouths were watering at the site of the huge cinnamon rolls they have. We didnt have room for one after our meal, but took one to go and enjoyed it for breakfast the next day. Two of us split one and it was amazing!! Monster cinnamon rolls!!! It is worth stopping in just for one of these. They sell them at the Cracker Barrel type gift shop and it will take you all day to eat it by yourself. No joke, this thing could feed a family of four. Before I found out about the Baldwin Saloon, I used to eat here. The service and atmosphere are good, and the food is reasonably priced. I also liked the family orientation in the general dining area, and being able to watch the game and throw peanut shells on the ground in the bar. I can't explain it, but the food here just never sat right with me. It was like eating over at a friend's house and the other kid's mom cooks different than your mom. It's almost really good, but not quite. I think the problem is that they have such a huge menu and they serve breakfast all the time, so they do a whole bunch of things pretty well instead of doing a few things really well. This is the best place in The Dalles to sit down with the family. Everyone will find something they like, and it is affordable. read more

A very down home type place that serves traditional style meals. Located off I-84 2nd the dalles exit going east. Really not too bad of a place for the dalles. The farm and railroad style decor is great for those interested in history of the area. They even have a tractor inside and you can have your picture taken outside at various props. The water is served in mason jars and the bathroom has old well style faucets. When you walk in, the greeter will say to you "howdy cousin". A little different. Not sure what i think about that one. Anyway, the servers are real nice even the ones not serving you. I ordered a cousin burger with fries. I got my meal in about 15 to 20 minutes. The burger was good and came with lettuce and onion. The patty was probably a 1/3 pound. The fries were ok (very salty - heart attack and high blood pressure on a plate). The meal cost me around $8.29. The atmosphere was great, the burger was good, but not worth the $8.29 they suck out of your wallet (what ever happened to the $6 burger). I'm traveling for business and between the work month from hell and a teething toddler at home who refuses to sleep, I'm exhausted. When - after a long day of traveling and flying - my hotel suggested dinner at Cousins, the glowing barnyard restaurant around the corner, I thought, "Why the hell not?" I walk in and ask to place a to-go order and I'm seated immediately at their counter, with a waitress appearing within seconds. I place my order and ask for a drink while I wait. I ended up with a damn good lemon drop! And while I waited for my food, every single person who walked by offered a smile or wave. Even the cook said hello to me! I was so impressed with the friendly atmosphere, it's not often you feel totally welcome as a solo to-go party. Fast forward to the food, I ordered a steak and fries. The steak is cooked perfectly (medium) and seasoned well. The salad has fresh lettuce and great ranch. I don't expect food this good from a restaurant that looks like a country diner with animal sounds emitted at the front door, so I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised. I'd absolutely come here again! Right when you walk in, you know something is different about this place. Barnyard animal sounds greet you at the front door which is cute (although mooing at a fat girl could be considered rude LOL ). You're greeted immediately with , "Howdy Cousin" when you go inside, and everyone is friendly even though the place is usually slammed. SO busy! If the restaurant is really busy, don't be afraid to sit in the saloon to have your meal. It doesn't feel like a bar in there at all except for the TVs and the obvious bottles of liquor on the wall :-) Cousin's prides itself of friendly, efficient service, and big portions of home-cooked entrees. I almost always end up taking leftovers home because the portions are so big. If you order the cinnamon roll, be forewarned: It is HUGE. Enough for 3 or 4 people, easily. I love that they offer free refills on most beverages, and that dinner entrees come with a dinner roll (you could call it a small loaf of bread), a VERY BIG biscuit served with apple butter OMG!, or sometimes cornbread. If the sides are this good, imagine how tasty the meals are. Mmmmm I have eaten so many times here with my dad, and I've tried so many different dishes. Everything I've ever had here has been excellent. I guess if you're into gourmet meals, this isn't your place, but for everyone else, it's a winner. My ONLY complaint is that they do not have adequate parking. Sometimes I can't find a free handicapped spot or regular spot close enough to the door, so I have to drop off dad at the entrance, park farther away, and walk in from the side street. read more

Very good food, very friendly service! We had dinner here while driving home from the coast. Our server, Jennifer, was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The themed restaurant was interesting, although being called "Cousins" was a bit unusual. The food was fabulous. My husband had the Cobb salad, which was fabulous, and I had the rib eye with a huge baked potato. I ordered the steak rare+, and when it came out, before Jennifer ever placed it down in front of me, she noticed that it might have been over-cooked. Great observation, as indeed, it was well done. She took it back, no questions asked, and quickly returned with a perfectly cooked steak... awesome marbling with great flavor! Everything you would expect from this beautiful part of Oregon with it's large ranches and farms. This was our last night on our way home from the coast, so we also decided to have one last cup of clam chowder... and wow, are we glad we did! GREAT CHOWDER! Some of the best we had on our vacation! I loved this place! A down home Americana style restaurant that even had Country music on the stereo! The waitress (Lauren) we had was excellent! Friendly, knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for us! It don't get any better! I had the turkey dinner ...with lots of turkey white meat in a thick gravy, complete with stuffing and mashed potatoes and vegetables. It also came with a soup or salad. Mine was beef minestrone and that was excellent too! My wife Anne had the fried chicken dinner and that was excellent also! And it was at a price that won't break the bank! Huge portions, great staff, nice ambiance, and if you stay at the nearby Fairfield Mariott hotel, the front desk can give you a voucher for a free appetizer. Cousins has dsily specials which are a great deal, and happy hour lasts 4 hours! The appetizers are around $10, but with the free coupon, it is a steal! The food is delicious, and I'm a big eater, so I'm pleased by how large the portions are. The Chicken Fingers appetizer is $12, but is definitely a meal in itself. It comes with fries, too. For dessert, I ordered the cake, and I asked the waitress to put some monthly ice cream flavor on it, which is Oregon Black Cherry! My friend ordered the brownie dessert and it is huge! read more

My husband and I Went in for breakfast, on September 15 2019, was very busy in the dining area. So we ended up in the bar. What a great service staff. Fun, friendly, fast and made us feel like we were the important couple in the bar. Was very thrilled that Cousins serve more than just breakfast, so I had a French dip, their famous Bloody Mary. The full rack of ribs were way overcooked. We sat in the gaming room and had pretty good service. Once we got to our room which was as far away from the office as you can get, our key cards didnt work. We trekked back to the office and got new cards, the gal told us we may need to pull on the door and then try it. I thought to myself for $116.00 + tax per night the damn thing should recognize me and open by itself when I stand in front of it. Tried it again and after about the 10th attempt it opened, issues in and out the entire time. Maybe I just didn't notice them last time, but I felt that $15 for a 1/2 (looking) order of a roast beef dinner was a bit much. And $9 for cheesesticks? Wow! The roast beef was good, but it was clear that the slab I got was from the disgusting fatty end. I found the rubbery fat cap and all the other fat yuck melty junk once I got further into the meal. Bleh. We walked over for supper since it was close to our motel and we were too hungry to go farther. Super kitschy, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're into. But after the hostess (who was super nice) got us seated we got volleyed back and forth between three waitresses, unsure of who was serving us. Eventually we got our soup and sandwich orders in (after giving two people our drink orders). Potato soup was straight up gross - thick in a congealed kind of way.
