A beautiful, traditional coffee house that I have been searching for in Bakersfield. The building is very cool, love the inside and out. Step in and take a moment to soak in what you are looking out, I can feel the pride, love, and hope poured into this business. We ordered a toffee nut latte and a white mocha and both were exquisite. Our coffees were served in actual coffee mugs!! I have no idea why this is so exciting to me, but it is. The presentation was beautiful. We also ordered breakfast: the avocado turkey toast and breakfast sandwich. It was good, but the coffee was spectacular. Our service was informative, kind and patient. We witnessed about 5 employees in the front and the back, taking orders, bringing food, organizing, etc. Every single one of them was smiling and helpful. It took me a moment to decide on my coffee and the gentleman taking our order was not pushy and patiently waited while I decided. He also listed some options for me when I asked for a recommendation. There is comfortable seating along with tables and chairs, a little book shelf with some books near the door and a quaint shop so you can take some of the amazing coffee home with you. I hope to visit this place a lot more often, I may even try it as a study spot once school starts up again. read more

I try to make my way here when I'm on the east side of town in the morning. It's a coffee shop with a charm. Service is very welcoming, even more than my favorite coffee shop, Dagny's. When I walked in, I was greeted by three different people. All were very sincere in their greeting. Today, I tried the cappuccino, nitro cold brew, and avocado turkey toast. The cappuccino was made perfectly and had just the right amount of foam, milk, and espresso ratio. Most places don't have enough foam or too much milk. Not here! The avocado turkey toast was also good, not the best I've had, but still good. I added a fried egg for $0.75 more and it was worth it. I was a little disappointed to see it had turkey sandwich meat. I think I would have preferred some real chicken... even some shredded pieces of rotisserie chicken instead. Next time, I'll opt out of the turkey. Top it off with some tapatio, pepper and a sprinkle of salt and you got yourself a nice breakfast. Lastly, I ordered the Nitro brew togo. I had a sip of it and found it to be smooth. I think I am used to a much stronger, bolder flavor though (gosh, now I feel like a snob). So I'll probably opt out of this next time. I can't wait to come back for summer to try their Tower! The wife ans I have been to this location 3 times now, first just to just buy coffee ground, but then we discovered how great their coffee actually is. Starbucks ain't got S#*+ on this place. Both my wife and I have not had as good of a White Choclate Mocha, Flat White or PSL. The cool thing about this place, is they pride themselves on hiring and building people's job skills, from employees that were once foster kids. On top of having great coffee, made by people that care about making great coffee, you know that your purchase goes to a local business, which us always a must in Bako. I love covenant coffee but today I had a pretty cold experience. I walked in and the older gentleman who I'm assuming is the owner is talking with customers about football. As I approach the counter to order I smile at him and another staff behind the counter and am not greeted at all. No words, no smile. Awkward. These are not the usual folk who greet me warmly. Then I get my order taken by a young woman who also has no interest in greeting me. She takes my order and makes sure to confirm the iced drink I ordered is correct. My order comes and I've never seen a vanilla latte the color it was because I'm ignorant on coffee. The drink is not for me, so I ask to confirm that it was in fact a vanilla latte. She rudely cut me off and repeated the iced drink name. I felt stupid for asking a question to a professional. No thanks, won't be coming back. Coffee was nice though. read more

I had to make a trip down here to taste for myself what everyone has been buzzing about. Over a year ago, when they were just roasting and selling the beans and before the shop was even open, a friend told me she had just discovered Covenant Coffee and would never go back to drinking any other coffee again it was so good. Not knowing where to purchase these magically flavorful beans, I just sort of forgot about them. Then, recently, I read Elgie's review of this soon to officially open store and just knew I had to experience it myself. I drove over to the Dale where their new store is still in the process of opening. They don't even have the menu up yet! Never fear, though, when I asked what they served, a very personable young employee told me confidently that they could make any coffee drink I wanted. I liked his attitude, and ordered a latte with sugar-free caramel syrup. What I got was a little bit of FABULOUS. The espresso base was full-bodied and the milk was steamed just right. But this place is not just about serving people a delicious cup of coffee, it has a much more important goal than that. The young man, I didn't catch his name, shared with me that all their coffee is roasted "on purpose" and "for a purpose." What on Earth does this mean? Well, as he explained it, Covenant Coffee is roasted "on purpose" to help train and employ emancipated foster children giving them coffee roasting and barrista skills to help them find success in life. It is roasted "for a purpose" for our enjoyment. Every time you buy a pound of their coffee it helps keep these former foster children employed in meaningful jobs. I ask you - What could possibly be more important than providing caffeine addicted people like me with the coffee it takes to keep us running? Never mind, don't answer that. ;) Their slogan, emblazoned on their shirts, is 'Hope in a cup.' I dare you to try to resist being a part of that. He also stated that they planned to have events there such as live music on Friday evenings to give people somewhere else to go in Oildale other than the bars and thrift shops. An admirable goal. Cool little trendy spot hidden in Bakersfield. It's not on a big main street and it's not near a crowded area. It's actually almost on the North edge of Bakersfield. It's pretty noticeable so won't be too hard to find. Walking in, you're kind of taken aback a little with the decor which is pretty wooden looking like. The staff seems very nice, and very helpful. They have a huge roaster inside in case you want fresh roasted coffee, which we didn't get this time. But in terms of their coffee, they know what they are doing. I got the iced mocha and they definitely got a good taste of coffee with a good blend of chocolate and milk. Very smooth to the tongue and not too sweet. The gf got the Starbucks style macchiato as opposed to their own style which is a reversed pour as they call it with a double espresso shot and foam milk.... that sounds awesome too but she didn't get that thinking it might be too strong... Overall I'd give this place a good 5/5 stars as nothing really went wrong with my first visit. Customer service was on point, they even came and asked us how it went after we got our drinks. Given it wasn't packed but a good to study. The cash register had some trouble but. Or their fault. There's decent of parking outside too. I would def go back. Ok, so maybe they are not quite officially open. But they're not turning anyone away either. They've put a great looking coffee bar into a historic local building. They're buying raw beans and roasting them behind the counter, a first for Bakersfield, Oh wait...they are in OILDALE!...It's a first for Oildale and Bakersfield doesn't have one. They're making great coffee and have a large selection of specialty teas. They buying local produce for a great looking lunch menu. But the really cool thing is the staff. They are training young people who have exited foster care and teaching them job skills, a trade, and giving them hope and guidance they wouldn't get otherwise. Awesome concept, Awesome coffee and Awesome Staff. And it's only two blocks from my office...YAY! read more

Needed a place where I could kill a little time before heading on to dinner, and I had Yelped this spot. While I only had some tea--which they brewed for me and then brought to my table--it sure looks like the high ratings are on the money. It wasn't too busy, at least not on this particular Friday afternoon, but if this place were in LA, the writers would pack it. Lots of tables, an airy industrial sort of vibe, free wifi, cleanliness (including clean bathrooms), easy parking, very friendly staff and reasonable prices make this a winner. But the super cool thing about this place is that it exists to benefit former foster youth. They're given job training (and jobs!), helping them overcome often difficult backgrounds and find success. Combine the quality of the establishment with its awesome mission, and this is a place where you can feel good about spending your dollars (though given the fair prices, you won't have to spend that many). If travel brings me back up to this area, this would be a definite stop. read more

This was my first time ever here or in the area. Such cute indie coffee shop vibes. Upon arrival I was immediately greeted and assisted by Sabrina! Super friendly and helpful she suggested the iced latte and I did not regret it. The coffee here is soooo good! It's smooth and just has the best flavor. So I'm on the hunt for the best coffee in town and reading the reviews of this place had me pretty curious. I live clear across town from this location but I decided to make the trip anyways. I was really looking forward to trying the cold brew that everyone has raved about but unfortunately they were out. Great news though, the lady at the counter told me they make a huge brew and it lasts for days so I will be coming back to try that cold brew. I ordered an iced vanilla latte instead which I enjoyed. My only complaint is that the sizes aren't near as big as this coffee fiend needs. When you walk in the aroma is intoxicating. I could live there. I love the vibe they have going in there. Covenant coffee is delicious in fact their coffee beans are my favorite coffee beans I've ever had before! Their beans are super flavorful and perfectly roasted I'm a bit obsessed with their beans. Truly The best part of waking up is being able to grind those beans and brew them up. I also love that they have such a great charity behind their coffee. They do need the profit to abused children and children in the foster care system. I really like the look and feel of the coffee shop. The only downfall that I can say is that I didn't feel the passion from the employees. I felt like the employees didn't seem very personal able or to friendly. I also felt $11 dollars for a summer salad that had microwaved chicken and no dressing was a bit ridiculous,but I will now make sure to just come here for the coffee not the Costco food. read more

"Cortado" Review The Roast/Pour: Very nice roast, delicious and on the medium side just like I prefer. Temperature however was way too hot for a cortado which makes sense because...Now here's the weird part...when they put down the drink it was HUGE. I asked how big is the cappuccino, they said oh the same size. I asked what the difference was and they looked at me like I was silly and stated well you know, a cortado has 4 shots in it. What now? I've been to (a few) cafes, and I've NEVER had that. I'm pretty used to the standard 4-4.5 oz cortado with a DOUBLE shot. Anyways, like I said the roast was good but unfortunately the huge amount of caffeine messed up my cafe itinerary for the day (I was hoping to hit 4 cafes but 8 shots is my maximum) Service: The baristas were all extremely friendly and happy to talk about coffee. I asked a couple about the cortado ratio and they all confirmed that it was supposed to come with 4 shots so I guess it's part of their standard training. Ambiance: Not exactly hipster, more like quaint and homey. Conclusion: The specialty coffee scene has a small foothold in Bakersfield (Cafe Smitten is fantastic), but the fact that they are selling what is basically a quad-shot cappuccino as a "cortado" really throws me off. I'm torn because the roast is great, the service was great but that is absolutely not a cortado, and in fact costs MORE than a cappuccino (because of the extra shots I assume). The description for 3 Yelp stars is "A-OK" which isn't actually true, but only for their cortado I suppose. I'm guessing it's OK if you just get a cappuccino. About Me / Review Criteria: -I only check out / review "Third Wave"/specialty/craft coffee shops -Nobody gets more than 4 stars until I've gone several times -Reviews can't be based on just a select group of baristas, they all have to be equally skilled, or at least must all have a minimum level of skill -My star ratings are solely based on the drink, never on food, ambiance, or if the barista is emo or snobby (because that would bring down more than 50% of the shops), although I do mention those in the review -I don't claim to be a trained coffee connoisseur -My reviews are generally based on gibraltar/cortados (or cappuccinos), not espresso or drip/pourover coffee read more

Unfortunately, although the coffee was nice and smooth, the food was mediocre at best. We ordered a medium roast pour over coffee (using the V60). It was $5 for about 16 ounces, which costs more than a cup of blue bottle. The price didn't justify the taste. I wanted to try the Chemex--which apparently results in a much smoother taste--but you would have to pay $10 for 32 ounces of coffee. Prices are confusing. Each choice of brewing method ranges between $5 and $10, but results in different amounts of coffee. Glad my barista was so helpful in helping me choose a mean and method. A bump from a two star to a three star place for her awesome attitude and service. Food is laughable. Our avocado and turkey on toast was literally just a slice of bread topped with avocado mash and deli meat. Disappointing for $4 per slice. The raspberry and white chocolate scone simply tasted like bread. A pretty sad use of $3. Overall, it's not a terrible place to stop for a quick cuppa. You're better off grabbing food elsewhere. read more

They make the best dirty chai. A good blend with espresso smooth & very flavorful. He loves the Mexican mocha also very good. You should check this place out, just got to get there before 2 o'clock . Wish they were open just a little bit later. Who would even go to starbucks its just over priced sugar sh**. This is my favorite place to grab a coffee and a bite to eat. Their espresso based drinks are delicious, my favorite being the traditional size cappuccino. The food is great as well; do yourself a favor and try the breakfast sandwich. It comes on a bagel with eggs, sausage and pepper jack cheese. It's better than anything you could get at a fast food place. The coolest thing about Covenant is that they roast their coffee in house. This gives them a huge freshness advantage over most of the coffee shops in town. Buy yourself a bag of beans while you're there, you'll be glad you did.
