I love to support local businesses but I love supporting local business with a great cause even more. Covenant coffee house roasts their beans locally and in small batches to ensure fresh and delicious coffee. Covenant also employs former foster youth while providing job training and mentorship. My first impression was the nice, cozy feel of their shop. A marked difference from my usual go-to (Starbucks). At their N. Chester location, you'll find large tables mixed with smaller ones to accommodate groups of all sizes. I was greeted by the cashier who was very knowledgeable and friendly while helping me decide on which whole bean to purchase. She even let me sample their current roast. Another cool service they offer is a monthly coffee club. You can sign up for coffee delivery to your door, amazing! I'll definitely be checking out their website and signing up soon. read more

I'm a fan! I've wanted to try this place out for awhile now but tend to avoid anything East of 99 and Olive. I must say the iced coffee I had was amazing! They do coffee right here. I'll be coming here to buy my roasted beans for home brewing from now on. The atmosphere is your typical coffee house scene. Comfy couches and chairs and a perfect place to relax with a book or laptop. My favorite thing about this place besides the coffee is their cause. You don't see enough support given to ex-foster home kids and the fact that they hire these folks and donate some of their proceeds to their cause is amazing. I will continue to support this place. I came in to grab a cup of coffee before I had a late start to work (9:45am) and although I saw plenty of employees, and they saw me walk in, no one said hi. No one said they would be right with me. No one acknowledged me. After reviewing the menu and giving them time to come help me, no one did, so I left. No one else was in there so I know they didn't help me because it was busy. Maybe it's the type of place where you go and sit down for a while? Which is understandable because they look like they have comfortable couches. They get two stars because it looks like a nice place and I know they're trying to help the community. Hopefully next time the customer service will be better. We all have our off days. read more

This place was amazing. The atmosphere was indicative of a Coffee Shop in Berkley. I was stunned that such place could exist on Oildale. The company was founded "on purpose, for purpose" with three goals. One: To provide the community with freshly roasted coffee beans roasted with excellence Two: To train former foster youth in the art of coffee roasting and business Three: To provide a career for former youth in an exciting and uplifting environment. Knowing this I felt the money and time I spent driving over from the West side of Bakersfield was well worth it. It also doesn't hurt that the staff really takes pride and is passionate about what they do. Been here a few times and we love the coffee and the relaxing ambiance! They roast their own coffee and this coffee shop employs foster youths who have aged out of foster care. So how could you beat a good drink and a good cause?!?! We were first introduced to this coffee shop by a friend at church who's a huge fan of this place. He is also a coffee guru and loves getting his supply of freshly roasted coffee beans from this little shop. After a meeting for a church event, he invited us to try this place. And so glad we went! This coffee shop has a great, relaxing ambiance... coffee table with a comfy long couch and chairs to sit on... magazines and books to read available... you can smell the aroma of good coffee as soon as you walk in! We've been back here a few more times after that first visit! Too bad they are closed on Sundays or we would be here every Sunday after church (they are conveniently located a couple of blocks away from our church). read more

I've been here twice and for some reason I keep forgetting to write my review. Latte art? Check. Decent Flat White? Check (& likely the only one that doesn't have that burnt taste) Decent Price? Check Coffee For A Cause? Double Check Don't let the location fool, you. This coffee shop is the best in town. They roast their own coffee (I think there's 10 types?) and every cup that's roasted helps a former foster child find success. Highly recommend their flat white, but if you aren't into straight espresso it's probably not for you. I personally enjoyed the Gun Power Green Tea Latte. Definitely a must if you love tea! Their decor is charming, with vintage chairs and slices of Bakersfield on the walls. My favorite has to be the tip jar that says something to the sort of: Every time you don't tip, a child gets a mullet. Highly recommend! read more

Updated review. Was in Oildale and decided to give them another chance. The last time I was was in was shortly after opening. The smell of roasted coffee was at the forefront this time instead of industrial cleaners. I kept it basic with a cappuccino. The kid behind the counter whipped me up a delightful cup. Rich, velvety smooth, and pulled perfectly. They not only addressed my concerns but exceeded my expectations. It was a slow day so me and the baristas just geeked out over coffee. I give them five stars because not only is the coffee amazing but the owners and staff are top notch. They take the time to buy high quality coffee from other countries but also make sure their purchases are made direct to the growers and that income is making a difference in their communities rather than paying a middle man which hurts the growers profitability. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile but it's seriously far far far away from everywhere I go so this morning I made the thirty minute across town trek and I'm very happy I did. I got the cold pour coffee with coconut syrup and it was so good! Tasted like a vacation in my mouth! I really liked the retro feel in there but it's out of the way for me to just go chill in there. Belinda I think is her name, was so helpful and really knew her coffee stuff....and explained to me why she felt that a french press decaf was the way to go. And that's the way we went with steamed/frothed half and half. So rich and so creamy. Not to mention her foam art was off the charts. My cup of coffee was like a warm hug and a whisper in my ear telling me "I am smart, I am kind, I am important". I love places like this, it makes me feel good about the money I spent...in fact, it makes me want to spend more money. Thus, the shirt purchase, which is my new favorite shirt...so soft. The ambiance is an ecclectic modge podge of comfort and conversational pieces. This is a coffeehouse in every essence of the word. Everyone should support this coffee shop based on their mission. Covenant hires and provides development and training to former foster youth and creates opportunities for success in the community. I found the customer service to be excellent and noticed the regulars that came through were very nice and not the edgy type you usually find in coffee shops waiting for the caffeine fix resulting in a good overall vibe coming through in all directions. My latte that had a smooth taste but too mild based on my usual, then again it could have been the beans they used that morning. But when the guys told me the mission of this shop, that was the best feeling latte I have ever had. read more

Is this the best coffee in town?? I would go so far as this is the best coffee in Southern California!! This is the first real cup of real coffee I've managed to find since I moved to the area two years ago! Zach really really knows what he's doing and seems to have a real passion for good coffee! Walking in, I was a little unsure what to order, the team asked what I usually drank and being a little tongue in cheek I responded that I usually drank flat whites... Oh, they responded we can so do that for you after all it's basically half way between a cappuccino and a latte... So this is where I get off topic for a second...so I feel like suddenly Americans know what a flat white is all because of Starbucks...as a side note for all y'all out there.. Starbucks does NOT make a good flat white... After all it's hard to hide the burnt taste when all you've got in the cup is the coffee and milk (no syrups to hide behind)!! Anyways Covenant Coffee made me an insane flat white... Like I felt like I was back home in Australia on Lygon street good (Google it!). I can't tell you how long I have been wanting to visit this spot, but the hours of operation coincided with my work hours...so it just never happened. One recent morning I was finally able to stop by on my way in. I only had time to run in and grab a quick coffee. The shop was pretty cool and cozy. It would be a great place to meet up and enjoy coffee with friends. And the organization itself, is great. What a wonderful concept. I wish they had extended hours so I could go more. A covenant of Excellence. As someone new to Bakersfield I was unsure about driving up to Oildale just to get a cup of coffee. I have been to a good number of what are considered the best coffee shops and roasteries in CA and none have been such an island their surroundings. My expectations were muted when I ordered but David (the barista) did me a solid and made me one of the best cappuccinos I have had. My fellow coffee aficionados will appreciate that it was a single origin Malawi that had been roasted right in the shop! Single origin (as opposed to a blend) is the new thing in advanced espresso as it allows for a targeted flavor. I walked over to where I saw the master roaster, Zach, doing his magic (it literally looks like magic in his roasting pot). I was just going to watch for a minute but he asked me if I wanted to try the 'best iced coffee ever'. Thats when David came out and chimed in, 'you wanna get jacked up?'. I had allllllll day. First they made me iced coffee from this crazy bunson burner-chemistry-set-looking-thing called a siphon brewer. It was so smooth and juicy. Next they made me a macchiato that was breathtaking. Not only were these drinks on the house, but I was moved by their passion for what they do. They are obsessive about the quality of the coffee they roast and brew. I asked Zach what roast I should get for home and he matched it to my tastes after a few questions. Zach is incredibly talented and really understands what makes a good cup: from the tree to the espresso machine. 2 hours and FIVE drinks later I walked out thinking that my expectations for moving here had been all wrong. The experience took me back to being lost at 11:00 PM in a small town in Italy. Between my English and their Italian I conceded to sitting down and drinking espresso with the locals. First of all, I just moved a few months from San Diego and I have struggle to find good coffee. Having said that this place reminds me of my favorite coffee spot in San Diego called Dark Horse. They have amazing brew and a good atmosphere. I also tried their breakfast croissant and it was very tasty. Employees are kind and knowledgeable.
