I was expecting a 20oz. Porterhouse, blackened ($2 up charge), medium rare and got none of those things. Our waitress was lovely and graciously questioned the chef on my behalf and he/she insisted it was a Porterhouse and made no apologies for the meat being well-done on one end and raw at the bone. I went ahead and paid for the most expensive item on the menu and was upset at the chef's lack of professionalism. Clearly he/she does not know that a Porterhouse should be at least 1-1/4" thick and how to properly cook a steak. You'll be happier if you pay the $29 for the T-Bone because either way, that's what you're going to get, as long as this chef is in the kitchen. read more

This place came recommended by one of the locals in town. However, I don't think he has had a good steak ever. This place was a total joke and frankly, way overpriced for the food they served. My boyfriend ordered the elk medallions (medium-rare) and I ordered the filet mignon with bacon. The food came out quickly and it became evident that both our plates of meat were overcooked. They both were medium well. I'm almost positive that my boyfriend's medallions were actually just steak medallions. My bacon was gray and half fat which was really off putting. The broccoli cheddar soup had chunks of something that was supposed to be cheese but never actually melted. When we arrived they had our preference written down and were able to accommodate that. The wait staff was great and our food also tasted very good. We have always wanted to try out the Cowboy Grill at Red Cliffs Lodge, but thought, due to the outside packaging that we could never afford it. Were we wrong and happy about that! First off, a little background about the area and the Lodge compound before I get to the restaurant. The location is only 14 miles east on Route 128 outside of Moab; the roadway parallels the Colorado River and is spectacular scenery wise. At the entrance, a large sign will direct you to either reception/restaurant or the Castle Creek Winery. Going along the drive, you'll pass by the corral and see the cabins available for rental; there is also a pool/spa, so basically everything you need for a glorious vacation in the red rocks of Moab. The inside of the Lodge is stunning with the Old West decor; there are meeting rooms available, a museum and gift shop. Brochures galore are all over offering all the sites any visitor would want to indulge in. What truly impressed us was the staff, so very friendly and helpful; not once were we made to feel like we "didn't belong", considering we were only there for the Sunday brunch, and not staying at the Lodge itself. We paid for our meals at the front desk, took the short walk to the restaurant area and chose a table at the windows. There is also seating outside and the view is truly to die for! Once again, the friendliest staff ever, from the omelet chef to the gentleman who made sure all the hot food items were kept full. Diane, aka the "Head Guru of Breakfast", made sure that our every need was met, and her smile was infectious; simply adored that woman! The buffet area is in sections; hot foods, fruits and cobblers, the meats (bacon, ham, sausage), omelet station, pastries near the coffee and tea (to-go containers are available)...all-you-can-eat!!! Talk about delicious!!! Made to order omelets, fluffy scrambled or southwestern eggs, the pancakes and biscuits are the airyous, the meats are thick and they even served up thin slices of "melt in the mouth" prime rib in a mild barbecue sauce; we were in brunch heaven. Whenever we're in the mood for a Sunday brunch, you can bet your bottom dollar that you'll find us at the Cowboy Grill at Red Cliffs Lodge. By the way, they also serve up daily breakfast and lunch buffets, and nightly dinners. Summary: BEAUTIFUL scenery and setting for this restaurant that sounds and seems SO good, but ultimately fails to deliver food and service that even comes close to equaling the amazing red cliffs, blue sky, and river views. Writing this review is kind of tough, because I felt like we were treated so poorly by the staff. However, I'll try to be objective and make the assumption that circumstances simply didn't work out well for us on this particular night. We showed up to the restaurant after making a reservation, which the hotel staff absolutely insisted we needed. We arrived to find that the restaurant was empty. An odd finding since they were so insistent that we make a reservation. I'm unsure of the motivation for telling us repeatedly over the previous few days that we stayed at the lodge that we needed a reservation in order to eat there. Whenever we walked by at night preceding our dining experience, the restaurant was not that busy. Maybe this finding was unusual, but I doubt it since we were there during a busy week of the year. I felt like they were trying to make the restaurant seem exclusive, which it clearly isn't! We ordered a cheese sampler as an appetizer, which was fine. All of the menu items were entrees with a small selection of salads and a soup of the day. The menu is interesting, because it, like the rest of the restaurant is all about "aw shucks" cowboy simplicity. However, the entrees listed are all of the steak, pasta, salmon, ribs, etc variety. There is nothing for a smaller appetite, like some sort of sandwich. I asked if I could get some sort of sandwich and specifically asked for a burger, thinking that an American, western-themed restaurant would certainly be able to cook up some ground beef and put it on a bun. I especially thought this was true, because earlier in the day, we went river rafting and the lunch choices from here were a pulled pork or sloppy joe sandwich. Our waitress, who, I think, did her best to try and accommodate my request, went and asked the chef and she was told that they can't do burgers since the meat is stored elsewhere. I don't know why they would move the meat off site every day for dinner, but that's what we were told. When I said this to her, she said it was actually in the basement. I don't know why they couldn't go down to the basement and get it, but that was apparently too much to ask. I eventually got the filet mignon and my wife got BBQ salmon. While we were waiting, they brought some rolls that totally hit the spot after a long day. While we were eating the rolls was when we first noticed the legions of busboys waiting to snatch our plates, etc as soon as we put the last piece in our mouth. They were there so soon that I thought they must be short of dishes in the kitchen! They were SUPER nice, but please, back off and let us eat in peace! We don't care if our roll plate sits there for 120 seconds after we finish the roll! The waitress was very attentive to filling our drinks and asking if we wanted more, which was very much appreciated. My wedge salad was a couple of wedges of iceberg lettuce, three onion slices, and some dried up bacon bits. Very average. My steak was ok. It was cooked appropriately, but had ZERO flavor. I almost did the unthinkable and asked for steak sauce, but made due with heavy salt. My wife's salmon bears special comment, because I thought it looked ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING, which made me refuse her multiple offers to taste it. It looked like a big frozen piece of salmon from Costco was reheated and coated with an extremely thick layer of BBQ sauce. Despite my reservations about the taste of such a foul appearing piece of fish, my wife said it was good. So, the person who didn't eat it (me) said it looked disgusting, but the person who actually ate it (my wife) said it was good. HOWEVER, a word about my wife. She LOVES BBQ. I tease her that food is nothing to her, but a carrier for BBQ sauce. Keep that in mind before ordering this nasty looking piece of fish that apparently does not ruin the taste of BBQ. For dessert, we decided on the safe option of a brownie with ice cream. It was fine and looked and tasted just like the packaged brownie mix that my teenage daughter and her friends make! Not what you'd expect from such an EXCLUSIVE place that they don't even offer sandwiches on the menu. As we were eating, the restaurant began to fill a bit more. It was never completely full, however. The night was ruined after 90 minutes when the manager came and asked us if we could leave, because they had two parties of 4 coming in soon and they needed our table. We were annoyed and said sorry and got up to leave when we noticed 4 empty tables (with our same view) with 4 seats that were available! Also, on the way out, there was no line waiting to get in. I had stayed and eaten at red cliffs about 8 years ago and had the best experience in Moab. I could not wait to take my wife to show her this nugget in the desert. The setting is breathtaking... And worth a drive.... But, Man have things changed. Let's start with the winery. We walked in and expected a Napa valley experience. Before it was in the main building and everyone was so friendly, a family vineyard feel... Then they moved the tasting room to the winery... It was the furthest thing from great. The lady behind the counter was rude and obviously had better things to do. The service poor, wine average, the experience an F-. Dirty glasses, no discussion on the vineyard, the wine, the awards... Even when prompted. Felt like a two bit bar, with a cheap gift shop attached. Don't waste your time. The portions of the wine are so small you can't even "taste" it. I was so disappointed. I'm sure dinner would pull me out of the embarrassing moment. Not what I built it up to be. Well not so much. Cocktails were wrong... Ordered a vodka martini got a gin martini... Then sat for 10 minutes waiting for the waiter to come back. So I took it back to the bar. The bartender was curt and rude... Told me to go sit down... And they were out of vodka... Except for a bottom shelf house brand. So we waited for our waiter and ordered a bottle of average red... Their "outlaw" red. Not bad... Not great. The wait staff was poorly trained and over worked. The stakes were average cuts, but over cooked and grainy. I ordered the "duke" and my wife had filet. The filet was better than my plate. Baked potatoes cooked to mush and veggies soggy. Top to bottom a terrible but expensive venture. The dude ranch feel they are trying to achieve is a joke! Dud is more like it. I love Moab... I have been there many times to play and mountain bike race. It used to be limited where to stay and eat... Things have changed. There are better places to stay in town... First off, there were flies all over inside the main dining room, mainly by the window tables where we were. But we saw many other patrons swatting them and our waitress even said that there were less flies at the outside tables, which made no sense. They need something to kill the damn things. It was also very warm inside like the ac wasn't keeping up with the demand. Service was okay, but our waitress had no personality and was very quiet. We both ordered the ribeye, my bison ribeye was $46 and my wife's beef ribeye was $38. Mine was cooked good but a little tough but had good flavor, but my wife said hers was very tough and over cooked...which it appeared it was. Best view in this area. We like reservation at 5:45 or so to catch the sunset over the Colorado River. It seemed to fill up after 7:00 or so and we heard people who couldn't get in at all. So I was so excited when I made a reservation to eat here because of some of the glowing reviews I've read made me really want to eat here. I took my family during the 4th of July weekend to eat at the grill and was, for the most part, satisfied with the location and staff. What I wasn't very happy with was the menu and the food (both in taste and presentation). When our waiter finally came to take our order, I was excited about trying the ribs. This was the main reason I even made the reservation was to try the ribs as when I had called to schedule our reservation I was told that ribs was an item being served on the menu. When I order the ribs our waiter advised that the restaurant was only serving a half a rack of ribs, not the full rack. I advised that that was ok but then asked if I would be charged full price for the half of rack and was shocked to be advised yes!! The full rack price was around $26 might I add and I said that was unfair to charge full price for a half portion. I then declined to order the ribs and moved my attention to the Bison steak (which I had never had before) and was interested in trying that. I was then told that this item was not being served as well. I asked the waiter why they would have an item on the menu not being served and felt that this was false advertisement. Of course he had no answer for me. I settled with a very lack luster steak meal. My son's chicken pasta meal was cold and my wife stated that her steak, which she order well done, was not cooked to order. All and all, we were not very happy with the meal but other than that the service was good and the restaurant was very homely and presentable. read more

We were sat immediately but waited over ten minutes for a server to approach us even though there were at least six servers standing around doing nothing. Food was disappointing - ribs had very little meat and were dry, pork chops were over cooked and dry. Fried chicken was good but that was the only highlight. Flies were flying into our food and into us during our whole meal - gross. Way overpriced for what we got and it made me mad to spend that much money for such a poor experience. $100 for two adults and two kids. So not worth it. The view is amazing. No doubt about that! When the food is cooked right it's great too. However, if your going to get the prime rib the chef doesn't understand rare or even medium rare. My husband had to send the prime rib back twice. The first time it was well done and the second time it was medium well. The meat should not be white. The kitchen response was that it looked pink inside the restaurant. Yet, when it came outside to where we were sitting it barely had any pink to it and was overdone. He ended up ordering a top sirloin. My friend ordered the filet rare and got it well done. It was at least fixed on the first try. A manager never came by. I would figure my husbands meal would be comped. He finally got his food after everyone had finished eating. Since we were with out of town guests I didn't want to bring it up to the manager. We were embarrassed as it was. I called when I got home and the manager said he didn't know about it. Well, they need to train the staff to inform them when a meal gets sent back twice! No real response from the manager but to say sorry. If it was my restaurant I would offer a free return meal or mail a gift certificate for a dessert or something. We gave the restaurant a chance to make it right and they didn't act on it. The cooks need to learn what rare is and the manager needs better customer service. Our waiter was great. Since we stayed at the Redcliffs Lodge for 5 days, the Cowboy Grill was basically our home kitchen -- we ate there anywhere from 1 to 3 times per day. Thankfully, the food is very good, varied, and fairly priced. The service is excellent and so is the take out service if you prefer to eat in your room. The buffet breakfast contained lots of fresh fruit, freshly baked goods, and eggs, potatoes and breakfast meats -- all you can eat. It was delicious! The midday BBQ had charcoal-grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken, some salads, fresh fruit and cookies, chips, and a drink-- all for $12 adults; $6 for kids. And it too was all you can eat. There was lots of variety with the dinners, thank goodness. The view from the restaurant is probably one of the prettiest I have ever seen. And, if there are clouds and a setting sun, the view changes about every 5 minutes. No driving into Moab for us when you can have good food, no hassle, and a serene setting. Oh and one more neat thing with takeout if you're staying at the lodge-- it's served on ceramic dishes with heavy plastic dome covers in an insulated bag-- no styrofoam, plastic, or cardboard! For years I have joked that I am an unpaid restaurant rater. I traveled 2 weeks per month for work, have eaten in literally a couple thousand restaurants, or more. I learned to tune in to where I was. In Seattle, order seafood, not steak. Here, order steak, not seafood. Tune in and partake of what the area is best for. My wife & I just stayed 3 days at Red Cliff Lodge, ate at the Cowboy restaurant on site all 3 nights. I had the filet 2 nights, and honestly believe it was one of the best filets I've ever had, both times. Great service all 3 nights, a "top end" western experience for us, both the lodge & the restaurant. Fantastic setting too. Compared to many other places we've been, the prices/value seemed very good, but the food was the reason we loved the restaurant. 5 stars from us. read more

I walked into a nearly empty restaurant at 7:30 and asked the hostess how long it would take to seat a party of 2 outside. She stated the the earliest time she could seat us was 8:45, and that there were no guarantees for outside seating. We showed up for our reservation, and the same hostess said that she was sorry, but there were no available seats outside. So, we were seated inside. However, 5 minutes later, a couple walked in without a reservation (and the restaurant was still mostly empty), and was promptly seated outside. It would have been really nice if the hostess said, "we have someone finishing up outside if you'd like to wait 5-10 min for an outside seat," knowing that is what I preferred when I made the reservation. As a side note, I watched another couple come in halfway through the meal, and they were asked if they would prefer inside or outside seating. They stated inside, and the hostess grabbed 2 menus and walked away. They followed her, as I would, but when the hostess turned around, she said,"oh, I wasn't ready for you yet." Communication with the couple probably would have been helpful. After we were seated for 10 minutes, our waitress came and took our order. We ordered a bottle of wine, and our main courses. It took 15 min for our wine to get to the table, but we could see it sitting nearby on a shelf for us for at least 10 minutes. At this point, I would have given the restaurant a 1 star. However, the wine (Castle Creek Cabernet) and the food were slightly redeeming. The pre-meal bread, although very slow to the table, was fantastic. I ordered the shrimp scampi which was in a delicious sauce and loaded with plenty of fresh vegetables, and more shrimp than I'd expected. My spouse got the ribs, which were flavorful, but under the heat lamps for too long, which dried out the sauce. After getting a second side of sauce, he was pleased. So, all in all, I would NOT recommend this restaurant and will not be eating here again. My husband and I were also celebrating our anniversary, which was even more disappointing. 3 friends and I were staying at Red Cliffs Lodge and decided to swing by the Cowboy Grill on a Saturday evening after a long day of hiking for some salads and dessert. First of all, the hostess asked us if we had a reservation. We did not and she acted like she was doing us a huge favor to "squeeze us in." (Over half the restaurant was empty.) We placed our order, our waiter dropped it off fairly quickly and that was the last we saw of him. One friend asked for her salad dressing on the side, that did not happen. Two friends ordered sodas, no refills were ever offered. My cheesecake literally tasted like the pre-sliced cheesecake from the grocery store. At $7 a slice, I expected more than that. We had to ask another server for our check as we never again saw our server. We also asked that server if we could get a refill on the sodas (since we never got one) with some to-go cups and she begrudgingly brought us the smallest coffee cups in the world. I have stopped for lunch at Red Cliffs Lodge both coming off the river (they have a dock you can use on the river!) and driving in for lunch and it has been amazing. The staff is friendly and helpful with the buffet/bbq set up. They have burgers, dogs, chicken, and a veggie burger. I usually get the veggie burgers, they're homemade said the bbq'er! Overall, I am a big fan of the River Deck and recommend it to a castlevalley/moab local or to any traveler! read more

First became aware of this lunch place while we were on a river trip with utah adventures, and then came back to stay in the hotel! It is setup like a barbecue where you grab your own bun and such. The two people cooking burgers were friendly and fast paced and the other back hand type worker was helpful when i asked about the hotel side of things. In summary, lunch at the "river deck" hit the spot after baking in the sun on the river and I highly recommend it for simple but tasty food with a personable staff. read more
