I always loved cracker barrel and when we would come to the Dells. This time unfortunately things have really deteriorated immensely. My wife's food came out like warm. Dumplings were made of paste. Mashed potatoes were not real and the pot roast gravy was dry gravy mix. The biscuits were crunchy, although when we asked the waitress to get better ones she did. First time at a Cracker Barrel and I'm actually embarrassed for them. Monday morning at 9:00 and probably 20 people in the whole restaurant. We waited 10 minutes for a server to wander by, then 20 minutes for 4 drinks, and then it was 40 minutes until our food arrived. All of our food was cold and the gravy sat so long it had skin on top of it. Biscuits were dry, bacon was way undercooked, the fruit was hard and unripe, and the everything was bland. There may be Crackers Barrels that excel and make amazing food with a great staff, but this location next to Kalahari is none of those things. Next time we stay here we'll eat a shitty breakfast sandwich at McDonald's because even that crap is better than what we were just served. read more

Let's talk service, the first rule(to me) in a breakfast joint is...keep the coffee cups full. Waited and waited for a refill. Even servers with a pot in hand wouldn't stop by. I ordered chicken fried steak with a side of grits. NOT watery grits! The meat was barely warm, not a crispy crust. It was soggy, no, mushy with an off flavor. As is the case with many Cracker Barrel locations, we could see the tall sign from the Interstate and spotted the restaurant as we exited. But driving to the restaurant was confusing because it was tucked away behind some other buildings and businesses. We finally drove through a gas station and a Qdoba parking lot before we saw how to get to Cracker Barrel. I'm sure there is an easier way but I didn't see any sign telling me where to turn. It has been a while since we last ate at a Cracker Barrel but we already knew what we wanted to order: Lemon Pepper Trout for my wife and Grilled Haddock for me. Each comes with three sides and we both picked Dumplings & Corn and my wife chose Fresh Fruit for her third while I decided on a Side Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing. We have ordered and enjoyed all of these before and we were not disappointed this time either. The Trout and the Haddock were nicely done and flaky just how we like them. The Lemon Pepper seasoning was just right and the cornmeal coating on the Haddock gives it a nice texture. The side dishes were as tasty as ever and we even ordered Praline Pecan Bread Pudding for dessert...to go...that we are so fast back at the hotel that there are no pictures! My mother and I come to this Resturant every time we are in the area. We each order the same thing every time, 3 pieces of French Toast and Hash browns. The waitress was nice but slow and communication was difficult because she was foreign. This is only an issue for the following reason. When our food arrived we each got 2 pieces French toast and our hash browns. When I questioned it and said we ordered 3, she said the other piece is coming. My mom and I were confused by this but no biggy. Then we got the bill, we were each charged $5.29 for 2 pieces and $4.19 for 1 piece. Like we ordered it separate. I brought this to the waitresses attention and she said that is what you ordered. Then the hostess and waitress said you should've ordered 4 pieces for the same price. I said, we order 3 pieces every time we come here and have never had a problem. So, it is pretty dumb that we paid $4.19 for 1 piece. You need this to make sense. I did not look forward to this day....the day I gave a 2 star review. Ive been going to Cracker Barrel for 20+ years and this one was beyond terrible. There were 4 of us in our party. Me, hubby and our 6yo and 9yo. Hubby and I orderd a french toast breakfast and hashbrown casserole. 6yo ordered an order of bacon and son chicken tenders....nothing complex. I asked for a peg board. She brought it over and asked if we wanted another one sinc e 2 kids. I was contemplating...and not very long. And she says...I have other tables to serve. Wha?!! We were seated and sat for 20 minutes and watched others get seated and take their orders. The manager and two employees stood in the kitchen doorway and saw us sitting there with menus. They stood talking and laughing for a few minutes. The restaurant was not very busy and they were not understaffed for the amount of people in the restaurant. Sadly when we finally walked out of the restaurant 25 minutes later, we told them what happened. The manager said, somewhat flippantly, "really, oh I'm sorry" and then just stared at us. We've eaten at a lot of Cracker Barrel's and this is possibly the worst one. We understand mistakes can be made but that night we were not the only ones to be forgotten. This visit to Cracker Barrel was one that was very unfortunate. It was not a big meal time either. We went at 2:50/3:00. Not only were multiple errors present, but the speed of service was not appropriate. It took over 40 minutes for two small appetizers to be delivered, and to top it off, the dinner came out only a minute or two after receiving the appetizer. Upon receiving the appetizers (fried pickles and beignets) the sauces were MIA. When requesting the sauces from our server, he brought out the wrong sauce. We received a balsamic vinaigrette instead of the pecan sauce. The server was nice about everything. Take two for the sauces. Second time around we got the correct sauce but, noticed that when our dinner came, those were missing sauces as well. In terms of the appetizers, the fried pickles were overly greasy that a persons arteries could easily be clogged. It was also way too overly breaded. It tasted like bitting into pure breading with no pickle on the inside. The beignets tasted good once the correct sauce was provided. The maple button bacon chicken was missing the maple bourbon sauce on it and the green onions were also MIA on the meal too. I had requested extra grilled onions as well as the green onions and it appeared that the word extra means 3 little slices. The bathrooms were also not very pleasing to go into. Enjoyed sitting next to the warm fire when we stopped in early on a Sunday morning in January. To be honest we weren't even sure they were open (big tall highway sign wasn't lit up) and when we drove up there weren't any cars out front but it turns out they open at 6. We arrived at 7 and were greeted warmly as we were the first customers for the day. The big advantage of being the first folks at a restaurant is the food comes out really quickly; not quite fast food fast but close enough to make it worth an early morning stop if you are passing by). We were in and out in under 25 minutes. They serve all the typical American and southern classics for breakfast. I got the pecan pancakes-3 large pancakes loaded with pecans. Came to Wisconsin for military training and decided to stop by with my colleagues after landing at Madison Airport. This is my first time ever coming to a Cracker Barrel and I can't figure out why I've never been to one before. I've heard a lot about this restaurant but they are very rare in California. The place itself looks beautiful with its old western decorations. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly. I ordered myself a steak, which I was made fun of for because I ordered it well done. Everything tasted like it was home made and it was money well spent although it isn't even that expensive. Assuming this is the correct establishment near the Kalahari, I would like to express my thoughts on my experience. I visited this restaurant during an anime convention held at the Kalahari and was originally told good things about trying this place. I ordered the pick two of a steak, grilled chicken tenders, steamed broccoli, and green beans. The chicken, green beans, and broccoli were very good! The steak, well, I ordered it medium well. When it arrived, it was very clearly rare as it was very much still bloody. I showed the server and asked if it could be cooked longer. They proceeded with the request, but when it came back, it was still barely medium rare and still bloody. Rather than continue to pester, I just ate the steak, but wanted to make sure to rate this as terrible for steak preparation. Everything else was good, but the steak, being the most important part, failed miserably. read more

My food ended up overcooked, and the shopping area feels a bit too crowded - plus slow service meant it took awhile to make it back out again. PROS: -Very cute decor. Definitely has a commercial, "old timey" feel to it. But I mean, it's basically on-par with what you'd expect at Cracker Barrel. -Food is very affordable. There's definitely a lot of the "back to the basics" types of foods like eggs and sausages and such. -Tablemate at our table LOVED their pumpkin spice pancakes. Looks like something to look into. It was a Saturday morning, so they definitely started getting busier as time went on, but towards the end of our meal, we weren't getting refills, and we spent a good twenty minutes sitting at the table waiting for the check after we were all done. -Walking into the restaurant is definitely a bit disorientating. Just a ton of stuff from their shop hits you at once - the noises, the blinking, and all of the STUFF. It took a bit of wandering (and feeling like idiots with people behind us) to orient ourselves to actually make it to the restaurant area. A bit of easier signage might be nice. Or a clear visual to the restaurant area. -The bottoms of my fruit pancakes were burned and definitely had a char flavor. I didn't really eat much of them. The apple fruit topping was delicious, though. -It was in the mid-40s F outside, and they still had the ceiling fans blasting full power out there. Went here with 3 people, did NOT have a good experience. We waited for our food for an hour, it came cold, and we were missing a bunch of items. Our waiter seemed under the influence, and had seemed extremely confused when we communicated this to him (even though about half of our items were missing) and didn't seem to get anything else we told him. We weren't given silverware, or checked on. Never had waters, drinks refilled, or anything else we needed. I'm a former server myself and understand the industry, but this was just poor and incompetent customer service all around. They weren't even busy. read more
