Can you really right a bad review about Cracker Barrel? THE ANSWER IS NO. I mean sure...the food doesn't always hit it out of the park. And maybe the service isn't always top tier, but beggars can't be choosers and every experience I've had at Cracker Barrel has brought a smile to my face. This particular location holds a special place in my heart because it is where a group of my closest friends and I had our friendsgiving dinner this year. Each and every one of us was smiling from ear to ear upon arrival and continued do so throughout the dinner. They almost ran out of meatloaf for my friend and the chicken and dumplings didn't really land with my friends, but I enjoyed my meal of catfish and sides. The green bean casserole was a little cold...BUT THAT GIFT SHOP THOUGH! We spent a good 15 minutes looking at all of the goodies and had a grand old time. This is the first time I've been to a Cracker Barrel, and I thought it was quite charming. The store part of the restaurant was like a mad-house. The Sunday lunch crowd was pretty big. There were hoards of people perusing the merchandise waiting to be called for their table. I liken it to wandering aimlessly through the drugstore waiting for a prescription to be filled. If you're not careful, you'll end up buying crap you don't need or really want. We were seated and I quickly jumped to the fried chicken dinner. For sides, I had the mashed potatoes and boiled cabbage (for a change and to make myself think I was eating something healthy to balance the meal). Overall, I thought the chicken was pretty good--better than what I can find in Southern California anyway. The one thing I wasn't too crazy about was having to take the bill to the register in the store to pay. It wasn't so much the task in and of itself--it was having to wait in line behind people buying T-shirts and bubble gum and then having the clerk try to sell you stuff ("do you need any candy or other souvenirs today before I ring you up?"). I never visit Cracker Barrel unless someone I am with wants to go. The quality of the food is poor. It's also difficult to find a healthy option. I've tried their oatmeal and their yogurt and granola parfait. I've had better Quaker instant oatmeal at home. Their yogurt is overly sweetened and their granola has burnt pieces. I had never been to a Cracker Barrel before until coming here recently. I had seen them around and finally wanted to know what the fuss was about (since the parking lot is always packed). Great food, great atmosphere and EXCELLENT customer service! The waitress named Amanda was exceptional. She noticed a problem when my food (wrong meat entree) was served, apologized explaining she would bring out the correct item and I could keep the food. In the meantime a gentleman (manager I guess) came over to ask how everything was. Just as he asked the question Amanda came over with my correct entree and vegetables. So I really ended up with 2 plates of food. The way my problem was handled was really great. I was so relieved that there was no drama when it came to correcting the situation. I have never been disappointed with Cracker Barrel's breakfast. I met up with some friends on a Saturday morning. Usually it is super crowded on Saturdays, but I was very surprised that we didn't have to wait for a table. Our server was very friendly and was able to answer any questions we had. My family of 5 adults were there yesterday and 3 of us ordered the meatloaf. I bragged about the meatloaf being the best, based on the Belton MO location. This meatloaf has a completely different taste and was not good at all. In fact we had heartburn for hours afterwards. Service was ok, I could tell she was rushed and inexperienced. I had to speak up when came to our table to take our orders. She mistakenly assumed that we were all on the same ticket. I hate that. I love going there often a good price for a good amount and I've never had a problem with my food there it's always good. My last visit however has me thinking again, we were seated than the lady went and grabbed drinks came back and rushed us with orders. Not even 5 minutes to look at the menus, after we claimed we still needed time because we had someone with us who has never been, she kept making statements of "I have other tables to wait on. I don't know why this place has such rough reviews. I came here during my week in Olathe and I can only say this place was a favorite. First off, our server, Madeline, was awesome. She was hysterically funny.. so when I found someone I could bounce jokes off and have a good time with, it really made the day. I was there with a co-worker and Madeline even schooled us on how to pronounce Olathe. For the visitors -- It's Oh-Lay-Thuh. Hope I did it justice Madeline. In any case, after trying to figure out how this was possible, Madeline kept us smiling. The service, obviously, was top notch. Back on the East Coast, we have Cracker Barrel's as well and admittedly I don't go as often. This was right near the hotel that we were at for the week, so I was glad to head back. This might be one of my favorite spots while visiting Kansas. I got pancakes, eggs, hash brown casserole, and apples with peach iced tea. Not your typical pancake but very good and of course the syrup is the show stopper. Oddly what I enjoyed most was the peach iced tea, hash brown casserole and scrambled eggs! We have enjoyed a visit to many Cracker Barrels in other states, but the one in Olathe, Kansas is hands down the best ever! It's still the Barrel with lots of people trying to shop and eat, but that's half the fun of it. But, this particular CB has awesome food!!! We met our children and the grands here for lunch and a great time was had by all. Everyone's food was cooked to perfection by professionals who care and give it that loving touch. My plate was fried shrimp with tartar sauce, southern green beans (slow cooked with ham hock, onions and perfectly seasoned), creamy to-die-for mac & cheese and a fluffy, cheesy, delicious hash brown casserole. OMG.... I don't normally allow myself this many carbs, but today was special with the family and I went for it. Sure glad I did. I haven't had great Southern food in a very long time and all at once I was back in Louisiana. I know the family frequents this location and now I know why. I was immediately welcomed upon arrival to the store with a "good morning". I walked through the store up to the hostess stand where three employees were standing. Not one of them acknowledge my presence. There was an awkward few seconds of just standing there before I said "Hi, table for 2." Apparently they did acknowledge my presence because they were ready to take me to the table but nobody said anything to me so it was weird. Our food came out pretty quickly after ordering and honestly it wasn't as good as I remembered their food being. Re: Holiday Catering My brother suggested a year ago that I canter my Thanksgiving dinner, and he recommended Cracker Barrel, given its menu is reminiscence of our childhood growing up in the South. And, for the mere price of around $120 - I would have a full Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people, ready to cook. I decided to do it, the price was very reasonable and the menu options with the cornbread dressing was perfect for our southern family All I had to do was pick it up and put in the oven (the food comes prepared and contained in oven-ready dishes). Also, I had the option of purchasing a meal that was already completely cooked - just pick up and serve - for six people. I haven't used the latter option yet, but my brother has, and he and his wife love it. After my first Thanksgiving using Cracker Barrel - I decided it was so easy and stress free that I would have them cater Christmas and Easter as well. This is the way we do it now, and my family loves it. Also, it's less expensive, because usually I spend a minimum of $300 for a dinner party, due to the fact that I have to buy ingredients/spices, etc. that I never use again. I'm not a big cook, so for me - I don't have anything to prove or be congratulated on regarding my culinary skills. This option has been a perfect solution in my case, because now I can enjoy the holidays with my family vs. standing in the kitchen for two days straight, utterly exhausted with swollen feet. Unfortunately was there with family for an end of out of town visit so no pics of the food was taken. Service was unbelievable! Greeted us right away. We had a party of 7 and we're told 10 minute wait is all we had and they were right on the money with the projected time. Restaurant was very busy but we were seated comfortably and waitress was prompt on our drink orders. As for the food, I ordered the country boy breakfast and really regret not taking pics as the food looked/tasted incredible! Everyone at the table enjoyed their food as there was silence for 5+ mins. While we ate. 2nd round of drinks were a little slow and a couple forgotten as well as having to flag a waitress down on 3 occasions which is VERY rare as someone who has worked in the industry 15+ years I NEVER waive down my waitress. Below average food and bad service. We waited for at least ten minutes and no one came to our table to take our drink orders. This was during a time when no one was busy and where several waitresses passed by our table multiple times. I guess our waitress didn't want to serve us. Finally, my husband got up and told someone and then we were finally approached by the manager and a grumpy waitress who didn't apologise for making us wait. The manager brought us our drinks and a handful of coffee creamer. One of them had already been opened. I guess he didn't notice. A few minutes later, our waitress was replaced by another waitress who was considerably nicer. No idea why. If the food was decent, we would've written it off as a bad waitress and returned, but the food wasn't good at all. I would recommend IHOP over Cracker Barrel.
