Dinner here on a weekday. Service: Seated quickly in a half-filled dining room. Our waiter, Ben, was attentive, prompt, and thorough. Eats: we each had a bowl of Crab Bisque/French Onion soup. We are both well-traveled and make it routine to have soup in our travels; this was truly one of the more innovative & simply delicious bowls of soup we've EVER had. Booked a table for 6 for their soft opening. This place is solid. With a few tweaks it's easily 5 star. Pros: Our table was ready when we got there, the vibe is upscale and hip. Not what you would expect in Sturgeon Bay. Music in the background was enough to set the scene without stealing it. Easy to have a conversation. Low lighting but not dark and we found it easy to talk, whereas other reviewers thought it was loud. We did find it ridiculously hot but it seemed to get cooler after we mentioned it was uncomfortable. Wait staff and many patrons sleeveless in January. Food: Amazing! Our group started with the calamari and smoked salmon apps. The calamari was tender not chewy with a light tempura batter. Whatever the sauce was it hit a home run with the table. The smoked salmon amazing. Think smoky lox. Most of the table ordered the soup Plankintons Revenge. It's a cream based french onion with, home made soft croutons and CRAB covered in cheese! Outstanding! The salads were generous but not enough to split. The bacon and avacodo would have scored big except it came with no avacodo. (oops!) All of the entrees were on point with seared scallops and ahi getting high marks. The caterpillar roll and sake (smoked salmon) nigeri were also terrific. Great beers on tap and the saki cocktails were also well received. Cons: Although the wait staff was pleasant there are some holes to patch between them and the kitchen. Our order came out in fits and starts. People who ordered the soup got it first but salads came along with the entrees for two others. Yet another two didn't receive anything until the rest of us where half way through our meals. The sushi didn't come with soy sauce. When asked for soy sauce a tiny bowl of soy sauce was delivered and we had to ask for more and were give a standard small bottle. Appetizers were delivered without any small plates or silverware. We all stared at the food while waiting for too long for a way to enjoy them. All in all this place rocks. Finally a new food concept. Don't come here for the standard prime rib and fish fry. Maybe I'm just a food snob but I was unimpressed by by the food. I ordered sushi and the rolls looked tiny - almost like the ones you would make from a little do it yourself kit. If that's the case, I'll just make my own sushi. Maybe it's because I've been spoiled and have had amazing sushi elsewhere but I would not come back for the sushi. Service was okay - nothing special. Food was good but we had horrible service. We arrived at 7pm for dinner. We ordered a sake cocktail and a coke. They were brought to us straight away. We then ordered our appetizer of calamari and our entrees a burger and single albacore sushi roll. Our appetizer was not brought our until 7.45. Our waiter then came buy at 8.20to let us know our entrees will be out. They came out at 8.25. The lead time between appetizer and dinner was way too long. Our waiter was friendly and the food was good. Several tables were seated and given entrees before us who had arrived after us. It's really a shame the service was so bad. My wife called for takeout. They told us one hour. We waited. I went to pick up the order and they hadn't even started on it. I was told 10 minutes, and 15 mins later I was told 15 more mins. I politely asked for a refund. Interestingly, I felt like they could give two fucks if I walked out of there. We loved their sushi but we won't ever go back. Food was good but we waited 45 minutes for our appetizer and it was 90 minutes (reservation was for 7:30p) before we received our dinner. Our server did nothing more than drop the food at the table and we didn't see her again until we had finished. I am sure the kitchen staff had a part in the long wait but the waitress did not even attempt to apologize for the long wait. read more

I don't know how we missed this place the last few years, but it has to be in the top five restaurants in Door County.(maybe the top three) We're not sushi fans, but everything we tried, from the appetizers to the salad to the halibut special was excellent. Especially when you consider it was a Tuesday night and well after high season. Friday early evening we walked in with no reservations. Place was 1/2 full. Got in and sat down. Waited 10 minutes for a waitress and water even though tables seated after us were welcomed right away..put in 3 apps and 2 drink orders. Then sat for 20 minutes with no drinks and 2 apps finally coming out. Another 15 minutes still no 3rd app or drinks. Place at this point was 1/4 filled and manager walking around talking to tables and our waitress bussing other tables. Still no drinks or final app.. at this point we are 40 min in and throw the towel in. Cancel the order we will pay for what we ate. Bartender says "just remember we got you in with no reservations..." and tried to charge for items never received We are all about waiting and chilling but no contact or ignoring a table of 4 is unacceptable. Crate was one of the most exceptional restaurant experiences we've had in a long time - food, service, and ambience. We each ordered to Alaskan Coho Salmon with the Bread Service. This place was great!!! Started with fantastic service and the sake cocktails were to die for! The sushi was super creative and reasonably priced. The playing was amazing and the small plates and enters were delicious. The beet salad was delicious and perfectly portioned and the lobster rangoons were so good! Ambiance was also great. When approaching this place. the manager told us it would be a 30 min wait. After waiting 30 mins, we came back to the restaurant. We stood at the door for 10 mins before She approached us rudely to state that we will be standing for another hour. She told us half an hour has not passed yet. Right in the quaint area of Sturgeon Bay just on the N side of the bridge, Crate was a happy surprise. We wanted good fish and not just another ubiquitous fish-n-chips plate. Well, baby, this is the spot! Holy Mackerel, the dinner was outstanding! We started w/a saki old fashion beverage and a perfectly chilled (nice pour) of Evolution Chardonnay and the calamari appetizer. Calamari was tender and cut in non-circles (amen) for a much nicer taste...none of that rubber stuff that plagues so many restaurants trying to do right by this yummy critter. We both opted for the white fish dinner and LOVED the delicate perfection of the preparation. It was FANTASTIC!! Served with roasted asparagus that was succulent and mixed with roasted cherry tomatoes and tender fingerling potatoes. While Crate specializes in sushi and Asian notes, this Wisconsin white fish was just the best! Our waiter was professional, and who doesn't love a totally gorgeous waiter?! My husband and I were in town a few weeks ago to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We had never been to the area before and our hotel recommended this restaurant for our special night. We booked a reservation over a week in advance and were excited for the sushi and steak! The night came and we entered the restaurant...and waited...seriously waited 5 minutes to even be acknowledged by any staff. A very busy waitress advised us the bartender would be with us in just a minute, but it took her forever to even look up and acknowledge us. We almost walked out and went somewhere else. It was awkward and if you've been here, you know there is no hostess stand or hostess. So you're literally standing around in front of people who are enjoying their meal. Anyways, the blonde...rude bartender came and asked us our name, we gave it and didn't even get a "follow me please" it was just her leaving us in the dust and we assumed we should follow. We get to our table and are greeted by a very bright and wonderful waitress. She's attentive and very kind. The food was..good, especially the sushi, but they had no steak...and were out of a lot of stuff on the menu. Honestly after we ordered a bottle of wine we were ready to just drink it and leave. It was disappointing. I normally don't do this, but WOW! Never in my life have I felt like I didn't belong somewhere, like I felt here. When we got in we were really excited to try the food and have a great experience. We placed our food order and got it like an hour later, which is crazy considering when we got there the people that were there were already eating. But that wasn't the worst part. We got our food and felt as if they didn't want us there, the waiter never came and checked on us to see how we were doing. (We needed drink refills) I saw waitresses at the bar on Snapchat taking selfies, the hostess drinking at the bar. And our waiter more interested in a different party than us. when they took our plates they didn't even offer dessert. Every other party was offered so, disappointing to say the least. All I can say is that for our well over $150 tab we should have been treated like any other customer, and not looked at as if we didn't have money! Very disappointed!!! read more

Sushi has been very trendy for a long time, but there are still places in America where the only reason to open up a place to eat is because of a trend. This is never a good reason to open up any long term business. A person opens up a company because they want to add value to the experience of life. They want to add value to the geographical location. Also, if you think that sushi is a trend then you need to wake up. We are a waterfront community. we deserve better than this place. My first visit was pretty basic. I ordered some maki rolls. I went for the eel because it is my wheelhouse and should be the real test for any sushi joint. It didn't have much flavor but I was not expecting a knockout because of the location and the lack of resources right now in the area. However, I gobbled it up because I was hungry. Oh no Mr. Roboto! Still, it didn't kill me. One of the things that bothered me right off the bat is that they don't have miso soup and I was told that they did not carry green tea by several employees. What is up? miso soup should be on every single menu in a place that has the word sushi in the title of their business. You don't have green tea? That is another massive red flag. Anyone that knows their sushi knows why these two things are important to the stomach and ritual of eating raw fish. I went in a second time and did not get sushi. It was a flaky cheese and mushroom appetizer, but it was so heavy that I had to pass on anything else. Again, I asked for green tea and was told that it was not available. Oh no Mr. Roboto! The second time was weird. The two owners came barreling through the doors and marched around in an extremely snobbish way. They were glaring at the customers and it created a really weird vibe for the front of the house. I left shortly thereafter because of the unwelcoming vibe. The third time is a charm? Not really. I noticed that they had shrimp civeche on the menu and was pumped that this place might redeem itself. This is when it gets really bad. The plate came out and it was not civeche. There was not a hint of acid in the dish and it was obvious that it was not prepared properly or cooked in the traditional way with the process of acidity. Also, there was this weird glob of guacamole underneath it. Excuse me? Civeche can mean many things to many people as a street food, but I have never been served a stew of guacamole in the places that I have frequented in Chicago and the outlying area. It was pretty nasty. It's not over. Someone in the back of the house had poured what appeared to be dish soap or some other extremely bitter cleaning agent into the plate. It was not food. It was clearly another chemical agent. I immediately rejected it and left the place. I was pretty upset. The worst part is that the staff made me feel like it was somehow my fault for being upset about it. I was immediately alienated for not wanting to eat it. I gargled first and then went to the bathroom to spit out the soap in my mouth. I rinsed my mouth again and it still did not go away. Blech! I don't know what is going on at this place but it is nasty. Do you know what I did? I drove to Baileys Harbor and went to the Cornerstone Pub and had a real dinner. There are good people working there and it pains me to see talented individuals being taken advantage of in this way in the county that I love. Early Thomas is in the back of the house and he knows his stuff. He deserves better than this treatment. I applauded him for the work on the first night because it is obvious that he is fighting an uphill battle with two very disgraceful owners. I would hire him any day to work in one of my businesses. He is golden. Do you want real sushi made by people who understand the art form? Remember Baileys Harbor? Head down Hwy 57 and go to AC Tap. Tuesday night is sushi night and they crush it. If I can drive forty five minutes to Sturgeon Bay for a nightmare then you can make your way over to enjoy the work of Steve and Tera Mueller. They actually deserve the patronage. The best part is that you will be eating real food and not ingesting a comical atmosphere that disguises itself as urban and hip among a sea of poorly managed staff members, two arrogant owners and plates that make you wonder why you even try to give the strip down there another chance. Prove me wrong Sturgeon Bay. Prove me wrong. Finally, the atmosphere at AC Tap is on point. It isn't for snobs. It is for real people who want to eat real food and engage in real talk. If I want to pretend like I am in Chicago then I will go home and watch a Hawks game. Don't be anything other than what you really are in this life. Don't open a sushi place and disregard the importance of the word to our global culture. I hope something eventually replaces Crate that will respect the local population and give Sturgeon Bay something that it deserves more now than ever. This place is super cool with modern/industrial styled decor. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. They were also dressed very nice which is something you don't see too often any more! We thankfully booked a reservation because without one, we wouldn't have gotten in. We initially went to Crate to get a steak and maybe some seafood. We did a Yelp search for steak and we came across Crate! Unfortunately, they only offer a tenderloin (for 38 dollars) or their beef special of the week, which may or may not be steak. Their special at the time of our visit was meatloaf. So, we decided to get sushi as their sushi reviews online came highly recommended. Crate did not disappoint! Probably the best sushi we've ever had! And that's saying a lot because we are major sushi lovers. I enjoyed the Geisha Girl roll with a delicious glass of moscato. I'm only rating Crate with 4/5 stars due to a few things... While the restaurant was very well decorated, it was very cramped. The bar was very small and can only comfortably seat maybe 12 people. We wanted to come early and have a few drinks prior to dinner, but because there was no space, we needed to burn time at a nearby pub. Also, because it's a bit cramped, it's very loud in there. The seating is quite intimate which is helpful in talking with your table, but not good in that you're almost sitting at the same table as someone else. It also took a considerably long time for us to get our drinks. This place is seriously worth a stop, though. The sushi was amazing. Hi folks, the soft opening is over, it's time to get your stuff together. This was our goto place for date night for a while but now it's off the list. It is too noisy on Saturday nights. The sushi is fine for Wisconsin but not worth the price. I feel like it's a club for the same 5 people you always see at the bar, every night. I do suggest the crabby bees, it's actually a unique dish, stay away from the porkchops covered in a heart attack. We had takeout from this restaurant. I called for over 15 minutes, before the line wasn't busy. It was off season, and only three tables were seated when I went to pick up, so I'm not sure why the phone was busy for so long. Either way, we finally got through, and I asked the lady on the phone if she suggested one dish over another, to which she offered no help, and seemed quite bothered. Upon pick up, the lady was seated at the bar when I walked in, and again, seemed bothered to help, although that is her job. She didn't come across as professional or caring, in any way. As far as the food goes, we ordered two sushi rolls (the whole shabang, and the billy goat), and an order of jambalaya. The sushi was good, although slightly high in price. The jambalaya wasn't that great. It was a very small portion, with an underwhelming flavor. I don't think there are any other sushi joints in Sturgeon Bay, so for that reason, we would possibly order/eat here again; otherwise, we would not. read more

We traveled into Sturgeon Bay for a small family vacation before going back to school. We are all a huge fan of sushi so we were quickly pointed in the direction of Crate. Because of COVID, we decided to order pick up. Upon entering the restaurant to pick up the food, we immediately noticed that it was full of people, no 6 feet guidelines and no masks. Thankfully, the restaurant staff were wearing masks. Calling over the phone to place the order was fine, the staff on the call were kind and quick to the point. When receiving our food, we had received one of the wrong roll even when the order was repeated and was correct, and on the receipt the roll was correct. If you are a strict vegetarian/vegan, be aware, they do put the seafood and vegetarian rolls in the same container so be sure to mention separate containers if you want that. Other than the roll mishap, the food was adequate. Nothing too special, but nothing bad by any means. We got the Volcano, Avocado Kappa, California, and Edgy Veggie rolls. The restaurant was pricy for the quality of rolls, but if you're looking for a quick sushi fix and have a flexible budget in Sturgeon Bay, WI, this is a good option for you. read more

This was the single worst dining experience of my life. We were four. We arrived at 6:30pm, were 'greeted' by a woman who was kinda surly, but we were in a happy mood, so didn't get too worked up when she said it would be an hour and that 'No, no place to wait. Maybe you can go away and I'll text you when we have a table.' Not particularly friendly, but again, no big deal. We left, not thinking much of it. Went across the street to a fun bar called Starboard Brewing Company--they were great! At 7:45pm we still hadn't received a text from the surly blond woman. One of our party walked back to see if a table was ready. We joined a few minutes later and they seated us around 8pm. A young, inexperienced waitress took our drink order and sushi order. She knew nothing about sushi. At 9pm we had not gotten any food, nor had we been visited by our waitress a second time. I called out to her across the dining room to ask her to come over. I told her that when something's going wrong, you need to communicate with your customer about it. She was shell shocked and didn't offer any information or apology. She weakly asked if we wanted another round of drinks, then scurried away. The table of 6 next to us who was also having problems, clapped. A few minutes later we were spoken to by a waiter who said blamed the problem on 'the kitchen' He also said 'you were the last table seated so it's gonna take a little longer' again not really an apology. Just a statement. Table of 6 got up and left. A few minutes later surly blond woman came by and said something as she was walking by. I said 'whatever'. She came back and asked if that wasn't ok? I said What? She said 'I said I'd comp your food' sort of acting exasperated. I said 'that would be appropriate'. 15 minutes pass. No update, no food. We walked out. Listen, things go bad in every business. It's really how you try to fix it that matters. This place had a bad night. A very bad night. The real problem though is that they also had bad attitudes and zero sense of hospitality. They are an embarrassment to a town filled with warm wonderful people and a lot of other great restaurants and bars. Go somewhere else. read more

My husband and I were in Sturgeon Bay for my niece's wedding. Let me start by saying we are "foodies" from New York and it takes a lot to impress us. We were in Sturgeon Bay for 4 nights and we ate at Crate on 3 of those nights! The fourth night being the wedding. Our waiter Benjamin was a delight. The service was excellent and his recommendations for food and drinks were spot on. The Lobster Bisque was delicious and I didn't think that could be outdone, but the Baked Crab French Onion Bisque was even better! The seafood entree's were amazing. We had the Seafood Medley, Atlantic Salmon & Diver Sea Scallops. From the "Land" menu we had the Frenched Chicken & Lump Crab and the Bone In Pork Chop. Both great. The chicken was so moist and the light lemon cream sauce was amazing. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the sushi selections, especially the fig n berry roll and Sake Cocktails. For dessert we enjoyed the Key Lime cheesecake, crème brulee and salted caramel cheesecake along with Benjamin's suggestion of French pressed coffee which I thoroughly enjoyed. If you are in the area, you MUST give this restaurant a try. You won't be disappointed. For us it was part of many pleasant memories of our first trip to Wisconsin.
