On my first visit, we sampled their lunch menu. I had a delicious fresh mango and Brie quesadilla w/jicama slaw and my companion had the infamous butter burger. We also shared a croissant bread pudding for dessert and bonded with the couple next to us who were also triple D fans, visiting SD from the east coast! We were in the area and had just seen the show a few nights before so we popped in this afternoon to check it out. We're a family of 6, so I'm not sure we actually just "pop in" anywhere, really. Always an adventure going out to eat! Came on a Sunday so we were able to find parking on the street pretty easily (for free). The place is cute & cheerful with all the animals and colors. Our three year old was hopscotching on the rainbow patterned tile walkway. Hopefully didn't bother the other diners too much, the place IS pretty compact. The staff were genuinely super nice, attentive and patient. We didn't have to wait for a table and food came out quickly. That's huge for us! The butter burger is magical. Get it! The hubs and I thought the mac and cheese was really good too - but sadly, we were only eating it because our picky children wouldn't touch it. It's not atomic orange, your typical kids' menu fare (it was SO good). Kids. Had high hopes for the creme brulee French toast and it was good! Not a scrap of it was left on the plate. Not as good as the French toast at Broken Yolk (my fave), but still very yummy. Sodas were a little pricey ($3) but they were awesomely generous with refills... glasses were never empty. I've been there several times. The food is edible but inconsistent. I did enjoy the Butttttter in the Butter Burger but many items on the menu lacked true flavor. All was OK except for the black-haired (with a black soul) manager/owner. She has berated the waitstaff numerous times and always makes us feel very uncomfortable. This has become our regular spot for brunch during covid, we order Uber eats from here all the time. The food is always delicious and fresh tasting! My boyfriend and I can never make up our mind since everything they have is so delicious so always end up splitting the Cabo Quesadilla, one of the French toad or pancake options (seriously, the creme brûlée French toast, raspberry ricotta French toast, or lemon ricotta buttermilk pancakes are each SO good) and then an omelette (the meat lovers and the Ortega are our favorites) and we always end up with door leftover for lunch! We picked crest from the diners drive ins and dives website. Place was pretty empty. Smelled like a air freshener kept spraying an awful bathroom spray smell. Love the food, love the staff...great place to get great grub! But please, please, please, please turn on your AC! There is a severe heat wave and when we visited your place on Friday late afternoon, the only reason it was bearable was that outside it had started to get slightly--just slightly--cooler and there was a little breeze. I know electricity is expensive but I for one am willing to pay for a cool, comfortable place to relax and enjoy my food. If you have to raise prices, so be it; nobody likes paying more, but these are the times we live in, with inflation and climate change. I usually do not seek out little places like the Crest Café, but I had read a few reviews recommending some of their chicken dishes, so I wanted to try it. I found a parking place two blocks away, but as I walked towards the restaurant on Monday at about 4:30 pm, I realized there were many other available places much closer, including right in front! One enters into a little bar area, and I liked the magazine rack positioned on the left--that was a homey touch. No one was around, but then suddenly a waiter appeared to take me to my table. The room wraps around in a "U" shape far back from the street, and I took the corner banquette at the rear. There was only one other table occupied at the time. The waiter nicely adjusted the casement windows and the blinds near my table. His name was Jason, and he was kind and efficient. The WIFI worked properly. I ordered a bottle of William Hill Chardonnay for only $20.00, which is a much better deal that the $8.00 charge by the glass. With a $20.00 wine, the glass of wine should be priced at $5.00. The wine cooler fit the wine bottle too snugly, and you had to wiggle it out each time you wanted to pour. Jason commented that bottles of Champagne were the most difficult to fit. [Note: Jason advised the restaurant actually does not stock French Champagne. They use the Italian sparking wine from the Veneto, Prosecco, for their Sunday Mimosas]. The good here left absolutely nothing to be desired. We heard about it on Food Network and while visiting San Diego, we decided to try it for brunch. They had a nice little outdoor patio with open seating, that's why we sat out there. I felt bad for our server as he handled all outside tables and a few inside. I got the Butter Burger that I had heard about and Wow! The burger was very tasty, a great size, cooked perfectly and was truly an incredible burger. The cloves of garlic may be a little much if you aren't a big garlic fan, but it was great! The only thing missing was that I got homemade potato chips instead of the hand cut fries I ordered, but even those were a very pleasant surprise. Hey, Crest Café! We were visiting the area after spending the day at the San Diego Zoo. It's always nice to have a local show you around to some of the better spots. Our Aunt's friend had originally wanted to take us out for amazing burgers but the spot he had in mind would have taken us straight into traffic. So he guided us to Crest Café for a big menu that we were all sure to enjoy. The menu is huge! It's a cute diner with colors that go along with it. It really reminded me of the small town diners we have in Hawaii so it was comforting. Our server was polite and took care of us very well. He kept our drinks filled and our food came out fresh. The onion stack was definitely a must order. I didn't know this restaurant was featured on Diners, Dives, and Drive-ins. I guess that's where the popularity comes from, but I learned a back story to the restaurant that really made me fall in love with the spot. Did you know the town which the diner sits in is a gay/lesbian/transgendered mecca and at one point the owner shut down the restaurant to fire all of the workers for fears/facts that they were gay. The town was so outraged that they stopped going and it drove the owner to rehire all of the workers. You'll find the symbolic rainbow in some of the décor inside. Hey, call me wrong if you know better, but I think that's a fantastic piece of history that'll drive me to visit again. read more

If the Celia's Chopped Salad was a man I would date it. My boss took me out here for lunch today. Just a short walk from the office. We walked in and it's cute and cozy inside more of a diner deco. Not a lot of people in the restaurant for being lunchtime on a weekday. My Boss said it's usually packed. Our cute waiter with the dimples was nice and attentive and gave great suggestions. There were 4 of us and all of us ordered a different salad. We were all very happy with our selections. My co-worker said they are known for their comfort food but I think their salads are very tasty and I would totally go back. I had the spinach salad with chopped turkey, jicama, mangos, apples, Gorgonzola cheese, cranberries and the basil vinaigrette. It was perfect. UPDATE 12/10/07 it is only my opinion, but i think all these new reviews of 4 and 5 stars for crest cafe only and no other reviews are that of the owner or close friends. but real reviewers do visit then give an honest review. can't wait ! ------------------------------------------------------------ crest used to have a couple of my favorite comfort foods after a night out. one was made with fresh pasta with chicken and was served spicy hot. it is no longer on the menu (at least the online menu) though it could still be offered. I can't remember the name that was given to the dish. i haven't been back since the dish was made so inconsistently too hot and not hot, dried out chicken and not dried out chicken. one time it was made so hot i couldn't eat it. i sent it back and saw the kitchen crew laughing. so i guess they were fucking around with me. the server told me maybe i shouldn't be ordering a hot dish if i couldn't handle a hot dish. i have ordered this dish from this same server maybe 20 times and never had a problem. he was just being dick as he always was. the other dish was the east texas fried chicken and i didn't have problems with that dish. what i really liked was when the pasta dish was prepared correctly. That pasta dish was what taught me that I love fresh pasta. Fresh really does make a difference. it didn't matter that the servers are the rudest servers i have ever came in contact with. I came for the pasta. so when the pasta dish went downhill it just wasn't worth the rude service any longer. the slam on the servers is reserved for the night time servers. day staff may be fine. maybe the owner teaches this behavior as she too doesn't have good business sense in my opinion. one thing I question is a picture she has on the wall with a bunch of framed pictures. one of them has the head cut out of a person of with what I assume is someone she or someone on the staff no longer cares for. seems childish to me. i hear she writes hate mail to the people that give her bad reviews. maybe she ought to listen to these reviews and make the business better. use some of the energy it takes to write hate letters and fix the business. read more

For reals, the Crest Cafe is best described as a palatable elevated greasy spoon. It ain't bad, (especially when you're starving or hung over) but it ain't fantastic either. If CC was just a breakfast place, I'd give it one more star. Having said that, you should know two things: . the lunch and dinner offerings basically take the air out of this joint's tires and . the owner's attitude that trickles down to the rest of her staff sucks ASS...and her posting below just reinforces that statement (along with the plethora of emails she and Maya C. have been sending me about what a bastard I am for 'defaming their name.' Defensive, party of one! Someone's feeling a little guilty...and with the laundry list of other reviewers above and below me who've had the same experience, I'd venture a guess this review is pretty on the mark.) I'll give props when they're due. The breakfast menu is plentiful, above par and reasonably priced. All the scrambles & omelets are great - and can even be subbed with egg whites or beaters for an extra charge. Me likey! The pancakes and waffles are yummy, yet they seem to skimp on syrup as I always end up asking for more (and I'll usually get it, along with a dose of attitude from an irritated server who apparently is put out by the request.) Dinner....blech. Best options are the salads, and even those have their bad elements (wilted greens being one of them.) I'd venture a recommendation of the turkey meatloaf sandwich but the last two times I've had it, it was terribly dry and just plain bland. And, the fries, one word - soggy. Lady, you need to relax, take a breath and realize that the people that patronize your restaurant (and pay money) are what keep you in business. My wife and I have been eating at The Crest for the 4 years I have been living in San Diego at least 2 times every week. It has been the number one place I have always taken my out of town guests for breakfast. We will not be returning! My wife and I took guests there last Saturday for breakfast. The wait is never a problem but when the owner stepped outside to call our names TOe seated, she called once. I did not answer because it was not the complete name we worte in their reservation list. When asked to repeat the name she was very sarcastic and spelled out Jim... J - I - M... JIM! She made me feel VERY stupid. As we were being seated, the server was still cleaning the table. She was VERY rude to her server demanding that he hurry in front of us. It was very embarassing. When my wife voiced her displeasure, it really pisssed the owner off. I should say that the way a business owner treats their employees is their own business UNTIL they do it in public. No more than 5 minutes after we were seated, the owner came back to the table and told my wife is she was displeased she could leave. Totally embarassed, I told her we wished to stay because my guests were hungry. When I handed her a coupon for the restaurant her remarks was "OH YEAH, THAT'S CLASSIC!", whatever that means. She never took the coupon from me. Later when she was cleaning the table next to us, she called my wife a bitch under her breath! I am heartbroken because their wait staff especially in the evenings has always been excellent. However... IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE FOOD, PEOPLE. This woman does not deserve your patronage. A friend came in from out of town, and we decided to get breakfast here. The place was near empty besides us, and started filling up shortly thereafter. As we were waiting for our drinks (which took a whopping 15 minutes to arrive) we scanned the menu and waited, patiently, to order. The drinks basically get slammed onto our table, and the server disappears yet again to tend to other tables- lest i remind you, we were the FIRST people there. By the way, if it matters, the timeline here is a few months after they repainted the place, just to give an idea. Once ordered, after what seemed like an eternity, we see the owner come in... and the truth is I didn't know she was the owner right away, until she started barking orders at a decibel disturbingly close to a scream at the staff. We were at a table near the front, so imagine our surprise when she demanded that a staff member get out some noxious and rather toxic smelling cleaning products to wipe down what seemed like every surface in our section. I almost threw up. I won't be back because, more than listed above, the fact that our server rolled his eyes when we asked to move. Well, I was wondering when we'd see a response from the owner and here we are a good 6 weeks later and one finally appeared....and it was exactly what I expected. So, in direct response to Cecelia's comment on my review: First off, thank you for commenting on my one day off this week. It gave me the chance to spend the 5 - 10 minutes I'll need to respond to your comment without distraction. To make it as easy as possible on you and any one reading, I'll address your points one by one: 1. I find it interesting that you just now find any of my comments "unacceptable". You've clearly had ample time to respond to other reviews in the 6 weeks since our visits to your cafe. No, I don't think you regret the nature of our experience there, what you regret is that I called you on it, publicly. 2. Yelp is exactly the appropriate forum to discuss one's experience with a business. It's taken the word-of-mouth nature of a business's reputation to a wider audience, but it's basically the same as neighbors sitting around the bar or cafe discussing how they got a great deal from the local car dealership or how the local pharmacist screwed up their script and will need to work to earn their trust again. It's exactly this kind of open and honest discussion that helps consumers decide where they choose to spend their hard-earned money and precious down time. Nothing I wrote was anything but true. If the truth sounded like a personal attack, it's because it must have hit home. And guess what, a business (no matter how big or small) is ultimately made up of people. So, of course it's going to have a "personal" feel to it. I took our mistreatment while in your cafe personally too. 3. I didn't attempt to "present" myself as a family man. That's what I am. If you happened to pick up on the fact that my family is at the top of my priorities, congrats, you nailed it. And this is precisely the example I give my girls - there's no point in making a huge fuss or scene when one is upset, but they should ALWAYS stand up to a bully. And that, Cecelia, is exactly what you are. In fact, here you are, finally commenting, and true to form, trying to bully me into editing my review. 4. My card was indeed charged exactly what I intended, so my concern there was unnecessary. But, fact remains that I honestly wondered about that until I saw my account statement. 5. My comments had zero racial undertones whatsoever. I simply pointed out that our waitress was an older, Asian, lady. Which is exactly what she was. I simply pointed out the distinguishing characteristics as to accurately identify our wait person. As for your appearance, it's been my experience that what's on the inside, usually shows on the outside. And as a business owner, I would imagine you understand that a customer's perception is reality to that customer. I'm clearly not the only one to have had an issue with your personality as exemplified by the other comments and reviews. I think you need to realize that you have a horrendous attitude and that comes through in mannerisms and appearance. What's probably most disappointing is that instead of taking any of the reviews you receive (not just mine) as a wake up call, you choose to muster up some false sense of having been offended. Talk about missing the forest for the trees. So, in short, NO. I won't edit my review. Unless I happen to find a misspelling or grammatical error, it will remain unchanged. The food was AWESOME! I completely enjoyed everything I ordered. Why then do I give it only 1 star? Plain and simple - the wait staff. Everyone was so incredibly rude and because of it I will NEVER go back, which is sad because I really do like the food. Our server was so horribly miserable and obviously hates his job. When I asked his opinion on a dish he let out a huge sigh as if he didn't have time to bother with such silly questions. It sucked that my dish was a touch spicy and when I asked for more water he took the glass away and didn't come back until he brought the check. I'm not a dumb patron either. I served at a restaurant for over 2 years and know what will and won't annoy a server. Aside from him there were rules posted on the wall that the customers were supposed to follow. Classic. No cell phones. Wait outside for your table (instead of standing inside). Etc. What kind of restaurant makes you follow RULES if you plan to eat there, let alone post them?! Oh, and don't even think about not following them, the servers yell at you to wait outside if you are still inside 12 seconds after you've put your name in. My experience at Crest was unpleasant to say the least. If you don't like to feel like a child getting reprimanded, don't go here. Or, do and laugh at how completely honest this review is. read more

I walked in to this place because it's in my hood and the sign in the window reads "Hearty, Healthy Comfort Food". The fist time I went there I ordered the "Not Your Grandma's Chicken Pot Pie". They're right, it didn't come close. I gave the place a couple more chances over the months. Went there for breakfast a couple times. You know when you get your breakfast, look down at it and realize the eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and coffee just aren't going to make you happy? Well, that's what happened. The last time I went there was with my wife and kids. It wasn't until we were already there that we noticed the sign "if you choose to bring your kids make sure they use their quiet voices". I'm absolutely serious. That was posted on the wall. Are you kidding?!?!?! Now let me tell you, my kids are pretty well behaved, but when we got dirty looks for my two year old laughing I firmly decided I'd never patronize this anti-kids establishment. If you are against children, need to be surrounded by others who share the same angst, enjoy eating deep fried butter and drinking burnt coffee then this place is for you! read more
