I am a huge fan of Nashville hot chicken! We have a place in Houston called micos hot chicken and the lines are always wrapped round the building. Houston simply has the best food. We have more restaurants than any other city in the USA. So with all that being said I tend to judge restaurants and compare them to Houston greatness. Food: I don't think this was a great showing for crimson coward. The chicken was very thin. It was not a huge juicy piece of chicken breast that I am used to. This was thin and very hard. Maybe they cover cooked it? Not sure. It didn't seem to be hand breaded either. The chicken was very though. The flavor was good I was just expecting a bit more of a perfect meal since I paid nearly 19.00. The Mac n cheese was very basic and absolutely NOT worth 5.00! Customer service: was great that's why they are getting four stars instead of three. Management give your team props! They are doing a great job here. They are very friendly and care about what they are doing. They remind me a lot of Chik fil a when it comes to service. They were very fast and took good care of us. Tried this spot for the first time, walked in and placed our order at 1:20, there were a few people in there ahead of us but a lot of phone orders being picked up , apparently 15 minutes is a normal wait time as their sign states but they had a hand written one below that saying 30 minute wait . The place is clean and the employees were super nice but they were working so hard with no AC .. I was drenched in sweat standing there waiting in my mask and it felt like it was above 80° .. TL;DR Hot chicken tasted best on its own, I'd recommend the tenders with some ranch! (assuming it is the same chicken used for sandwiches) Tried The Crimson sandwich and thought the chicken was great! Crispy and flavorful on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. The buns were decent. Pickles were very thin and not crunchy at all so I would take those out next time. I believe the popularity of Howlin' Rays in LA is what this newer place in Downey is modeled after...very similar decor, menu, and vibe without the ridiculous line. It is located in a small shopping center next to the post office. I think it has been open less than a year and there is no official sign in front, but a banner. Plenty of available free parking. The place is small and cramped inside with about 6 spots at the counter and a few tables...might want to plan getting it to go. We ordered the Crimson sandwich and it is good, not great, and big but too expensive at $12 with no side or drink included. We got half a dozen wings which cost $12 and is borderline exorbitant at $2 per wing. There are 5 levels of spice and we picked the 2nd lowest for the wings and the middle level for the sandwich and it is probably a good idea to stay away from the two spiciest levels unless you are looking for a challenge. Will I be back? Probably, to try the loaded fries and maybe the tenders and some of the sides. But I won't be going out of my way to make sure that return visit happens anytime soon. read more

The service and wait time was very good here, they gave my husband and I drinks "on the house" the first time we came. We are regular customers now, driving over an hour just for lunch. I was really craving a Nashville hot chicken sandwich and drove a little out of my way to stop in at the Coward. I really liked the vibe in here and enjoyed the bar style seating option. I ordered the Crimson, which is their flagship sandwich, and was a little shocked that the $12 price tag did not include any sides or a drink. I ended up spending roughly $25 on my own meal which included the aforementioned sandwich, a side of potato salad and a side of mac n cheese. I'm not sure how they can justify these prices but hey, I was hungry and craving. I ordered the "Hot" option, because I was told that the "Burrrn baby burn" was practically inedible. The sandwich had a generous portion of chicken on it and stuck out of the bread considerably. Upon first bite I realized that the heat level was definitely there, although it was missing a bit of flavor. It was hot for hot's sake. Once I got to the actual sandwich (about 6 bites of only chicken later) the slaw and sauce helped compensate for the lack of flavor in the hot mix. Very tasty with the added flavors. The chicken breast is filet style and thin. I understand the reason for doing this and how much easier and quicker it is to cook this way, but I prefer a nice thick chicken breast on the buns as opposed to all that surface area sticking out of the bun. The mac n cheese was spot on. Delicious, creamy and not too saturated in cheese sauce. Potato salad was missing a little, could be a bit sharper in my opinion. Easy 5 stars. The 'hot chicken' craze is alive and well and Crimson Coward is for sure on one of the top spots south of LA in Downey, a city with numerous high ranked eateries. The formula is familiar- you get chicken that you can get a varying degrees of heat and CC has four levels from mild to some insane level- I got the 2nd hottest and my wife got mild. I will say that heat was REAL but very tasty! If you have a sensitive tummy, make sure to prepare accordingly lol. Awesome portion size and with fries we had more than enough to share. What I love about CC and why this is a solid 5 stars is I noticed the cook using a thermometer to ensure the chicken was close to perfect!!!! The place was much smaller than imagined and located in an older but pretty busy shopping plaza. Fortunately, there is an empty side lot in the back for parking which helps during rush hours. The store in simple and to the point. We want you to order, sit your butt down, eat and get out lol simplistic touch pad ordering from the guy at the counter. Soda fountain for drinks (had a yelp check in but forgot to use it), limited dining area and not the most welcome seating. My husband and I brought our girls so it was a little crampy. We were lucky to have nice neighbors who were understanding of our little ones. The kitchen area is small but has just the right amount of space to make the perfect meal for their customers. The wait for our food was reasonable and it was presented on a large meal tray. Made the transport to our table easy. I got the homestyle hot (wasn't that hot but good), husband got the crimson mild (he ordered everything on the side), side of Mac n cheese, side of fries, chicken tenders for the girls and 2 drinks. The fries were fried to a hallow crisp. Not that enjoyable. Couldn't even taste the potato. Loved how it was white meat in both sandwiches. The chicken fingers lacked taste despite of ranch dipping sauce. I'm not sure how I feel about this Nashville chicken. It's a confusing concept of taste. Is it supposed to be like buffalo? Chinese ma la? Spicy for brief moment and my lips forget what I had for dinner? It left me feeling confused. This experience really makes me want to try howlin rays to see how it compares. Maybe one day I'll learn to like this. Plus side is everyone was awesome. Workers were efficient. Nice. Helpful. I docked a star for high price, mediocre flavoring sandwich breast meat, lack of flavor for chicken tenders and additional charge for dipping sauces. read more

This is a warning it's not a joke about the Crimson Coward Nashville Hot Chickezn is really delicious Nashville Hot chicken extreme hot I mean the mild not extreme Hot level they have at the restaurant. My wife and I have travel to Nashville,Tennessee for the Original Nashville hot chicken and other delicious food that great city have. The hottest item right now is the Nashville Hot chicken popular by Prince Hot chicken is Nashville establishment for many years. Then comes Chick-fil-A the original chicken sandwich birth place in Atlanta,Georgia. Now Nashville hot chicken has hit L.A. like a storm everybody is getting their piece of Nashville hot chicken anyways they can get hands on it. Now Nashville hot chicken has hit the city of Downey called the Crimson Coward bring the their version of Nashville hot chicken to their hungry fans that they wanna try a good piece of their hot chicken and get burn by it. My wife and I including my father in law wanna try the Nashville Hot chicken for ourself. When we arrive at the restaurant it was pack with people enjoying the taste their version of Nashville hot chicken.. First we look at the menu board what to order they were someone to help how to order. He tell us the Heat levels and he warn us. My wife order the Crimson with no heat and I order a Crimsom with mild heat first I throught it's going to give a little kick but was surprise later on. We order chicken tenders with no heat for my father in law. They tell you when you order it takes 15 to 20 minutes to get your order thst good because you need some prayers and medical attention after destruction of the Crimsom do to you. They call our number my wife pick our meal when I was the meal wow the portions are big. The Crimson is so big that's a big piece of chicken including my wife no heat Crimson they give us fries for taking to long because it was a busy night for a Friday. We also order fried pickles. I took a bite of my mild heat Crimson first I throught this is going to be tough because the Crimson is bigger than my hand. It tasted really lots of flavors it have coleslaw and pickle add will to the sandwich. Couple seconds of the bite WOW the heat hit so hard I thought it was a kick but no it was spicy and hot for mild and sweating bullets. My wife tell me to stop I did, I have try many version of Nashville hot chicken but the Crimson Coward tops my list for your bucket list or your last meal. My wife enjoy her sandwich very much and father enjoy the chicken tender. The fried pickles were very good and fries were ok but little bit salty. We will come back again to the Crimson Coward to take my revenge on the Crimsom. I recommend to my family and friend and including my Yelp friends.
