Since it was a beautiful day I went with friends to Acme's Fairhaven location. I was fun, but their ice cream is not a premium ice cream. I would describe the texture as gooey (some review called it stretchy) and it lacked the flavor of a premium ice cream. My family had made ice cream many times, and no air was injected into it. The sign outside states that the ice cream is made in Acme, Washington, population (I forget the number but less than 300). There are some traditional flavors and some unique ones like Banana Walnut and Blueberry Lemon (with big blueberry halves). The flavors we got were very tasty. Rocket Donuts (both locations) has become an institution in Bellingham. Even guests, from out of town, want to hit one of the locations whenever they visit us now. They have a great selection of traditional donuts as well as some very creative seasonal/specialty offerings. I'm told that even the giant donut, that's about as big as a car tire, is sold many times over every day. I'm not sure if I am happy or sad that the vegan selection is limited and sells out daily. I occasionally miss out when my kids get a late morning donut because there aren't any vegan donuts left. I think my body thanks those before me when I stick to a cup of their coffee. read more

We took a stroll around this old town district of Bellingham and ran into this donut joint. After checking out the Yelp reviews, it seemed worthy so we walked in and grabbed a couple donuts right before driving off to the airport. The donuts are definitely much tastier than your average donut joint and much better than some of these so-called gourmet donut joints you see all around nowadays. They are known for their maple bacon donut bar. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, if you've been to Voodoo Donuts (which I personally think is overrated) in PDX, then you're in for a treat. Their version here is a billion times better! We tried their donut of the month, which was the Samoa (just like the Girl Scout cookies). How I heard of this place: Every new culinary location in Bellingham is cause for excitement, celebration and a bittersweet memory of what it replaced. This Harris Street donut/coffee/ice cream shop was a very prominent place of transition a couple of years ago as the construction and window coverings were removed to reveal the new gustatory, sweet sojourn. Type of cuisine: Donuts. Freshly baked, daily at the downtown location, creative and unique flavors dispersed among the more typical and ultimate favorites. Also served: house-made ice creams and rocket blend coffee/espresso beverages. Ambiance: A brightly windowed corner spot allows for mucho natural lighting among the 50s-esque music, sci-fi movie posters and 60s-ish memorabilia surrounding the walls of this donut shop. "Since the golden era of Doughnuts was in the 1950's & 60's we also serve up a bit of nostalgia in our downtown bakery café. Music, Sci-fi movie trailers and original movie posters from those days transport you to a simpler time." Complete with a mini rocketship and intergalactic mural, this space age locale one that attracts everybody! What I ordered: At the recommendation of the young lady behind the counter, I went for the most famous, most-ordered Buttermilk Bar ($1.64), warmed, of course. My husband chose the Bacon Maple Bar ($2.29), and we would have expected nothing less once it was spotted. My cousins ordered all things blueberry! The Blueberry Fritter ($1.99), and a dozen lightly glazed Blueberry Donut Holes ($1.50). We were also highly tempted by Acme Ice Cream and I sampled three flavors: Espresso, Dark Chocolate, and Chocolate Raspberry. What I loved: I loved the blueberry options in our midst! The warm fritter a true winner among winners! However, the surprising buttery, flaky, biscuit-like buttermilk bar's hint of glazed sweetness made for the perfect combination with any espresso beverage or a tall glass of milk (even though we settled for ice water.) I'm not sure what the "real" cronut at Dominique Ansel's bakery in NYC tastes like. In the pictures, it looks fantastic. When my girlfriend and I were visiting Bellingham last weekend, I noticed a sign at Rocket Donuts advertising their "croinut". Given that it could be a year or two before I visit NYC again, I decided to give this version a try. The croinut was three layers with raspberry jelly between each layer, and a generous amount of powdered sugar on top. The center of the croinut was filled with even more raspberry jelly. Was this croinut the best of both worlds? Did it have the buttery, flakiness of a croissant with the soft, chewiness of a donut? To be honest, while it was still a tasty pastry, I would have rather had either a donut or a croissant. While it had a slightly buttery taste, texturally it just seemed like an overcooked croissant. Other than the shape, it didn't really resemble a donut at all. Also, the raspberry jelly was a little too sweet, even for jelly that goes in a donut. I'm not sure how the other donuts taste, but I wasn't super impressed by their attempt at a cronut. On the plus side, they had good service and the restaurant was clean. I'm here often, I would be here even more often but they have a habit of randomly closing early, sometimes way earlier (1-2 hrs) than their posted hours. That said, it's Acme ice cream, and I love their mint chip. They have some baked goods (pie, muffin, cookie, brownie, cinnamon roll, etc) which are ok. This place is so fun! The interior decor is retro sci-fi themed, super cute. I came here for some ice cream and coffee after walking around the waterfront area. The ice cream flavors were limited, but there was still enough selection to please everyone in my group. I was a little disappointed that there weren't any very adventurous or interesting flavors, I ended up getting amaretto. The flavor was great, but the almonds that were mixed in were sliced, not chopped. I wish the had been chopped and toasted, the texture would have been better. I had a black coffee to accompany my ice cream, which was good too. My S.O. ordered a brownie ice cream sandwich and latte, which he enjoyed. The service here was good. After we started to walk away staff came out and started to harass us about how gross that is, it's early in the morning and no one was even downtown. I've gone here a few times, and as recently as last Sunday. I didn't order any ice cream for myself this time, but I had a few bites off of my sons' cones. The good: 1) Ice cream is delicious. If you like hard ice cream with a nice variety, you won't be disappointed. 2) Location. This is pretty much prime real estate in terms of summer foot traffic. It's directly in the heart of Fairhaven, which is a fun place to people watch. They also have a small outside section that is covered in shade in the afternoon. Very nice location. The not-so-good: 1) The queuing system. There's something really odd about this. The majority of people coming here for ice cream are bringing with them small children, whom can often be indecisive. So essentially each transaction is held up because your ice cream is ordered directly from the counter where the ice cream is displayed. Kids (and adults) want to be able to see the actual ice cream before they order it, even if they're able to read the flavor on a large menu board. And they way the queuing system is currently setup, even if you're second in line, you can't see the actual ice cream if there's a family in front of you ordering and paying. Certainly not a deal breaker, just a bit annoying. read more

My family and I drove down from Vancouver for a quick afternoon in Fairhaven and DONUTS. I've had specialty donuts in the past and these were by far the most affordable. In terms of taste, they were a good classic donut. Nothing too fancy in comparison to some other donut places I've visited. I had the bacon maple which was alright. After having a few mediocre donuts from 2 years ago, I decided today was the day to give Rocket Donut another try. We had friends in town and took them to Fat Pie next door so it was pretty convenient location-wise. I had a glazed twist and chocolate bar (with whipped cream filling). The chocolate bar's filling was DELIOUS!! Light, fluffy and not too sweet. However, they fill it from both sides long-way and didn't get to the middle so no filling in 1/3 middle of the bar :( super sad because I thought this was the best part of the donut! The glazed twist was alright...the glaze isn't as sickly sweet as other donut shops but the dough is a little more dense. If we have friends in town and are eating lunch/dinner in fairhaven, I would be up for getting a chocolate bar again. Otherwise, off to Lafeen's I go!! read more

Stopped in here during a not-so-stellar morning hoping to self medicate with a cinnamon twist. I want to love these donuts, I really do, but to me they are just so-so. Not as light or fluffy or fresh as Krispy Kreme. Minimal cinnamon and dry, cracking glaze. It leaves me wondering if the donuts are made the night before?
