FOOD: Good, for hotel food. And they have a night owl snack/food section in lobby in case you missed dinner time. I'm so mad that I forgot to take a picture of my PERFECTLY cooked hamburger. It was heavenly. My husband had the fish tacos (which he demolished!) and there was not a French left by the end of lunch. I was staying at the Renaissance hotel for a work meeting and it was nice to have a restaurant right in the lobby for breakfast, dinner and a nice cocktail. For breakfast, you do have the option of doing the breakfast buffet but I thought the avocado toast looked good so I went ahead and ordered that. I loved the pickled onions and the bread and the egg was perfectly poached! For dinner, I had the honey friend chicken platter and I have to say that this friend chicken was lovely! Loved the crisp of the chicken and the sides of mashed potatoes and asparagus were *chef's kiss* as I was starving...I ate it all :D I loved the presentation of the smoked old fashioned. It was a nice way to end the evening. The service was great as well - very friendly and very attentive. If I'm ever in the area, I'd love to try some of their other menu offerings. read more

MIND BLOWN-- this is not your typical hotel pub/restaurant where food is generally forgetful before fleeing to your next destination. The vibe was welcoming, homely even. The flatbread is layered with flavors: red wine pears and roasted mushrooms drizzled with a white truffle cheddar sauce. The ahi tuna is coriander seared, arranged beautifully balanced with herbed feta cheese, Campari tomatoes, and crisp greens. The surprise? I mean can you practically see the freezer burn on my halibut?! I didn't really dwell on it, but it certainly wasn't high or even medium quality by any means. The service was very attentive though, and I enjoyed my me time with the puppers. I'm madly in love with the fact that they were so dog friendly. And I always appreciate a coastal inspired decor, even if it's subpar. If you're staying at the Renaissance Newport Beach, it's going to be your only sit down restaurant option (how I ended up here). TLDR; food was meh, ambiance was a bit cold, and there was a hair in my dessert but they comped it. Service was excellent. FYI: I was there on Thanksgiving. This restaurant is really convenient in that it is inside the Marriott Renaissance. The restaurant itself has nice decor, but the open-concept of it (i.e. many walls are actually ropes and you can see the hallways of the hotel) makes the ambiance a bit cold. The halibut was unfortunately overcooked, the ribeye was thin and a bit over-charred, and the prime rib had a fairly thick brown band. We had the pumpkin tart that came with ginger snap ice cream/cookie, but we found a hair on the tart after taking a spoonful (my hair isn't that long). They had it comped and got us a new one which is nice. The service was excellent; there was only one person (Zachery I believe) and he was able to manage all tables himself quite well. He's the only reason why I gave this place 3 stars instead of 2. Thank you! Note that I dined here during Thanksgiving, so there may be external factors affecting the quality. read more

I ordered the Short Rib Birria Tacos and the Street Corn, which I aptly put a small smattering of inside each of the three tacos and BAM!! They were amazing with the consommė dip served on the side. I never got to eat the salad, but about an hour or two later I was vomiting. I believe it must've been food borne illness. My bill was $100 but included a $49 bottle of wine which I only managed to drink half a glass before the vomiting started. I guess my question is why wasn't it freshly made? I ordered it at 8 pm or so and the menu said room service was until 10 pm. Why did I get a sandwich from the lobby that was probably less than half the price? This is a very cool little bar at the Renaissance Hotel which used to be the Fairmont. I had a really delicious gluten-free cheese free pizza with mushrooms and shrimp. The ambiance is nice and there was live music when I was here. The menu had a lot of appealing options and the bar was well stocked. I had the scallops, which were fine. There was a type of 'Kentucky Mule' on the drink menu with Bulleit bourbon in it, so I asked if she could switch it to Buffalo Trace. First, it wasn't a great drink (more sprite than ginger beer), I think the girl was new and maybe sitting in for another bartender, because there were two guys later that seemed to know more about what they were doing. Secondly, the drink was $12 and I got charged $17 for the Buffalo Trace swap. I say SWAP because these bourbons are very comparable in price, so I was surprised by the $5 up charge. I then asked for an iced tea to go. I got a plastic cup that wouldn't even hold 12 ounces on a good day, for $5. Entree, cocktail and tea for $70... not again.... read more

This is the restaurant inside Renaissance Newport Beach Hotel. I had looked at their menu online prior to ordering and already knew exactly what I wanted- the macaroni and cheese skillet. They had plenty of more 'adult' options that I'm sure would have been amazing, but I'm a sucker for mac and cheese and couldn't say no when I saw they use manchego cheese, which is one of my top three favorite cheeses. The meal was delicious; nice and creamy and rich, but with the right amount of crunch from the herb crumbs. It's considered a side dish but it was definitely big enough to be an entire meal for me. Super impressed. A little context: a conference away from home and Current Coastal Cuisine is the restaurant of our hotel. A special night as my boy is turning 15 so where to go but the ground floor restaurant after a day walking up and down the beautiful coastline. The food was lush, I thought it might be good but not only was I not disappointed, i was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of each product on our plates, the fine tasting delicate food and the just right level of salt and pepper. We started with the lobster beignets as we were reading the menu. They laid on buttery light (I know right?!) sauce and dust of Parmesan. We also had a flat bread to share and the truffle oil was just right. My son had the fillet of beef medium rare and I had the scallops. I am always nervous when I order my favorite sea food as it is a challenge to cook right ie caramelised sides and tender core. So I was not aware of this place until I saw the menu on Newport Beach Restaurant week so totally worth a try. We went for lunch since I liked that menu better. 3 courses for $25, well worth it!! Made me a little nervous but it was great. Service was great and we weren't rushed, lol. For appetizers we got 1 of each, the hawaiian poke was fresh and great presentation. It also tasted great. I liked the sauce and wished there was a little more. I also got sirachi to add a little kick. It had big eye tuna, roasted nori, maui onion, scallions, avocado, edamame, seaweed salad all on top of a crispy rice. Nom! Caramelized Brussel Sprouts were also fresh and cooked a la dante. The kumquat added a unique taste. We both got the spiny lobster grilled cheese which we weren't what to expect but it had a decent amount of lobster in there! Very well done!! The sandwich itself could be found at Slapfish, lol. Absolutely delicious! For dessert, we each got 1 of each. I really enjoyed my kumquat cheesecake. It was not overly sweet. It was light and the fruits added a nice combination. The balsamic reduction was very nice. My friend's nutella crisp was huge! It was a meal in itself. Also very good and generous. The steak was amazing, seasoning was great, cooked perfectly. They were able to sub broccolini (instead of brussel sprouts); the seasoning on that was delicious! The cheddar bacon bread pudding was a first for me. Smash burger was delicious. Our server Zack was great! Very attentive and interactive with my son which every parent appreciates. Located inside renaissance hotel, this place is clean and has lots of seating. My husband and I ordered drinks and the burrata salad with salmon. The dinner was delicious! Not too heavy. As for drinks we started with the cucumber Collins which was perfect for me as I'm picky with drinks. Husband gives it 7/10, I say 8.5/10. Next was current old fashioned which was SUPER strong. He gives it a 6/10 because "I'm a bitch when it comes to liquor" lol. Drink this if you want to feel like a man. After was Berry Bliss - very girly drink and sparking. Pretty much like champagne? He gives it a 8/10 and states "it is what it is". Lastly is the espresso martini which is a 9/10 he says and is very smooth with good flavors. (Granted he's pretty drunk by now helping me write this review). We ended up getting short rib tater tots too and they were great, but I wish there was more meat on them. I loved the hotel, but had a really bad experience at the restaurant. 5 if us came for happy hour/dinner one night about 6:30. We found a table right away, but it took quite awhile to be acknowledged by a server. We finally got someone's attention and got menus. We ordered drinks (the only good part, so gave a star for that) and told them I wanted to make sure they came back to get our food orders by 7 so we could get happy hour pricing. They took our order right at 7. We finally got our hummus around 8:00, but none of the rest of our food. We eventually gave up and left without dinner at 8:15. There was nothing taken off our bill for the wait. If the kitchen was backed up like they finally told us, they should've said that right away and we would've gone somewhere else. read more
