There are so few Indonesian/Malaysian spots in the Bay (especially since my favorite Indonesian restaurant from college, Jayakarta, closed in Berkeley) that it is a must stop anytime I find any on Yelp. And Curry Leaves did not disappoint at all. The store is pretty quaint, tucked away in a corner of a little shopping plaza and is a tight squeeze on the inside especially if you have a big party (although they have a bit of seating on the outside as well). You order at the register, take a number, and get seated wherever there might be space. The food comes quite quickly and is piping hot. My partner and I have come here numerous times (they do have a lunchtime break and close early-ish so we have missed out when we didn't double check) and everything we have tried we have loved. Char Kway Teow: the star dish here - incredibly smoky with that "wok hei" taste that is so synonymous with east and southeast asian cooking. The noodles and meat are incredibly filling and we always have to order a plate. Nasi Lemak: We have tried this with most of the different meat offerings (Mamak Chicken, Onion Chicken, and Beef Rendang) and I think that the cripsiness of the Mamak Fried Chicken is the best pairing for the rice, veggies, anchovies, peanuts, and sambal. While the stewed chicken adn beef rendang are great options as well, this dish really needs that crispy texture for balance and is a great lunch dish to get here. Curry Puff Pastry: great little appetizer that we only saw them offer one time. Similar to an empanada and was a nice side to our mains.

Vegan Mee Goreng (can choose spicy level)

This is a small restaurant with a self help/self order kiosk upfront. Drive all the way here with friend to try out their Chendol since this type of dessert is rare to find in Malaysian restaurants these days. Unfortunately they didn't have on menu today. According to the owner, he is short handed and didn't have enough "trained" staffs on hand to make a good bowl of chendol. Their vegan mee Goreng was very flavorful and tasty. I like that you can choose the level of spicyness for your dishes (including the char kuey teow my friend ordered). The Char kuey teow has good "sizzling wok" fragrance to it. Could use a little more salt or soy sauce though. The roti canai was crispy but a little on the oily side. The curry was rich and good texture and again could use a bit more salt (for me). Tea Tarik was good and has the right strength of (black) tea to it. I would come back again to try their other authentic " malay" dishes such as Nasi Kandar and Kerabu which you don't see often (rare) in Malaysian restaurants. Service pretty fast and very freindly owner who explained to my friend what the Malaysian slangs mean.

I thought of coming here for my fav Nasi Lemak with Chicken curry after trying it in Singapore and this eatery didn't disappoint! Flavorful curries and Sambal. The food leaves a lasting impression and leaves one craving for more! Friendly and quick service. Ordering is now done via a self ordering kiosk. Ambience is casual and family style. Will be definitely coming here for Nasi Lemak again!

First time trying Malaysian food. I've had Indonesian and Singaporean before so kinda similar, but this was new for me. My partner's friend is from Malaysia and said this place is legit, so we decided to check it out. I got the Nasi Kendar, which was $15.99. It comes with flavored rice, lentil gravy, stir fried cabbage, and papadam (thin spiced cracker). For the protein, I picked the mutton bone-in curry, which was $3 more. Totally worth it. The mutton was super tender and full of flavor. Had a nice spicy kick to it too. Just a heads up, the menu at the restaurant has more stuff than what you see online. You order at the counter, they give you a number, and they bring the food out to your table. Place gets packed during lunch. Like, no joke, it fills up fast. If you don't come early, you might not get a seat. So be ready to grab your food to go if it's busy. Overall, solid spot. I'd definitely go back.

Food is so flavorful and good value too, would come back to try other items Order at the register or tablet. Grab a number for dining in and food will be delivered to your table (need to specify number when ordering) The standout dish for me was the roti canai with chicken curry. The roti canai came out steaming hot and was so good dipped into the curry. I paid $10 for it and would eat it every week if I lived closer. The chicken sambal was pretty spicy but tasted good. Tender chicken and fresh ingredients. The chicken meat roll was so good with the red chili sauce. Malaysian tea and coffee were pretty good but skippable if you're not in the mood for a milk tea type drink.

One word for this place - flavor! They know how to nail it down! Their Mee Goreng is the dish to go for! I got the regular one with meat and seafood, medium spicy and it def got me sweating a bit Good for work lunches and casual friend lunches. Their spring roll is also pretty good. Wish the roti canai was slightly more flaky and less thin. But I still this place a 5/5! For anyone looking for good flavorful food with the right amount of spice, give this a try and you will be back!

Found out about this Malaysian restaurant from an episode of CheckPlease! and put it on my to-try list. On a recent Thursday, my friend and I were out in the area and I suggested we stopped by for lunch. It's located in a strip mall and we arrived at 12:20pm on a Thursday and had no problems with parking. We studied the menu posted at the counter and we both wanted the fried chicken. A worker came and asked if we needed help and we asked about the Kandar fried chicken and Lemak fried chicken dishes and she explained the difference. Ordering is by a touchscreen and she helped us with the process. You get a number and select a table to sit. There were about six table inside and three outside. Self-service water station available. I had the Lemak fried chicken dish, which did not have the traditional Malay spices as the Kandar. It came with coconut flavored rice, half a hard-boiled egg, cucumber and a sauce, which was spicy. The chicken was a leg quarter and it had crispy skin and the meat was moist. Friend had the Kandar fried chicken. Her dish had a basmati rice, with a curry-like sauce with a large chip/puff. I had a taste of the items and the flavors were bolder with the spices. My friend was going to mention this restaurant to her Malaysian friend and have her try. It was my first time trying Malaysian food and would like to try other items on the menu next time. Friendly service.

Besides the authentic Malaysian food, teh tarik and Kari puff, we came for the limited supply of Nyonya Kuih on the weekend of Malaysia National Day. Service was fast, servers include Chef Jai himself brought out food with smiles, and portions were good. Curry laksa was spicy for my taste but my husband liked it. Special dish Nasi Kerabu was interesting with a mix of blue color rice (unflavored), rendang chicken, salad, sambal chili, and keropok. Char kuey teow was missing a bit of 'wok hei' for me and chicken curry a bit light for my liking. We had a very satisfying meal. Thanks Chef Jai!

Stopped by after a while, and noticed a few updates. There's a new ordering kiosk and they've added more tables inside and out, which is nice. Got the nasi kandar and roti telur, pretty solid! The curry was flavorful and hit the spot. Always a good choice for Malaysian comfort food.

I have been curious about Malaysian food and more specifically this place. It has gotten high praise. So I found time on this Friday lunch hour for a visit. A helpful and friendly young lady behind the counter provided an overview or primer for newbie. She walked me through the order kiosk to place my order of char kway teow and roti with curry chicken and soy milk. The roti came first. It's soft , kind of flaky and stretchy that reminds of Chinese green onion pancake. Dipped in the curry sauce was nice and the curry although pleasant has a spicy curry and bitter kick to it. Together with bits of chicken or potato can be meal onto itself. I really enjoyed the roti. Next came the main entree, Char Kway Teow that had plenty scrimp and squid pieces it reminds me of Chinese chow fun and Thai pad Thai because the noodle. It satisfied my curiosity so I can try other dishes on my next visit.

It was very crowded on a Saturday lunch time. This was my second time eating here. The chicken was very soft and flavorful. It looked small portion but I was quite full after. I have to deduct a star because one order from our party came much later than others and we were worried that it was forgotten. I wished our waiter acknowledged that it was going to come later but anyway food was delicious

Friendly staff and other diners. Lots of first timers due to recent Check Please review on TV.

What a busy place with interesting food. Lots of activity 1p+ on Saturday afternoon. Order via the electronic kiosk or in person. We were lucky to find a seat. Ok service was a bit chaotic but they eventually got our order correct and it was worth the wait. Friendly helpful staff. Roti Telur warm and inviting with lentil gravy. Delicious flavor and texture. Mee Goreng nicely spiced and just like in other pictures. Plenty of food to fill you up. Nasi Kandar the best choice of our meal as it has a variety of flavors and textures. A really interesting and pleasing plate. We requested tofu version they were out but offered eggplant instead. Nice surprise as the eggplant was flavorful and carried plenty of heat. Better than expected. When you need to warm up with spicy filling comfort food this is a great choice. Be surrounded by friendly atmosphere and attentive staff. Make it a cultural experience.

They make every order fresh hot. The lady in front of me ordered the same item as me, and I can tell they cooked our food separately.
    Dee L.

Plus: Taste authentic, every order is made fresh and hot, the lady before me ordered the same item, but I can tell they cooked mine separately. Minus: Doesn't have good Malaysian chili sauce to go with the food.

A few minutes later they called back to ask if I wanted bone in or boneless. I told them bone in was fine, I just didn't want the skin. When I got home and ate it, the food was okay overall. The chicken was cold, not like it had been sitting out, but more like it had just come out of the refrigerator. The peanuts were actually a nice touch and added good flavor and texture. I also liked the ginger sauce they poured over the chicken, but there really wasn't enough of it. I wish they gave extra on the side in a separate container. The side veggies were okay too. It came with cucumbers, quail eggs, and fungus. I ate everything except the fungus. It had a very unique flavor that I just couldn't get into. Overall it wasn't bad, but I've definitely had better Hainan chicken elsewhere, so I'm not sure if I'd come back again.

It was…read moreour first time here, so we asked the staff for their recommendations and ordered the following: ~food~ - Roti Canai $7.50: I loved the one! The Roti was crisp, but still had a nice chew to it and was not too oily! Portion size was ok, I think just enough for 2 ppl to share as an appetizer! - Sarang Seafood $27.50: Interesting dish for sure! It was fried taro paste in a bowl form with a seafood stir fry inside! In my opinion, I think it was just ok! A little overpriced for the amount of actual seafood in the dish (there were about 4 pieces of shrimp, small pieces of scallops and squid). I think the dish could've used a bit more flavor and maybe better quality seafood? Overall ok! ~overall~ Service was great, very quick and the staff were very friendly! Lot of seating indoors, so would a good spot for larger groups too! Plenty of parking in the plaza as well! Overall, pretty good, I may come back to try some of their other dishes since their menu seems quite big!

We came here as a group of four on a Saturday afternoon before a movie screening and every dish was pretty good, the standout being the bird's nest (nest is edible), fried tofu, and noodles. Next time I want to check out some of the desserts as well, but unfortunately we were too full to even fathom another bite. A good problem to have! Service is friendly and parking is abundant. This is located in a very popular strip mall with a ton of options, but I would recommend coming here for a taste of authentic Malaysian cuisine.

A few other customers were arriving and waiting as well. We ordered two nasi lemak dishes and one seafood kwetiau goreng. The kwetiau came out first, and we assumed the nasi lemak would follow shortly, so we started eating. Even after we finished the kwetiau, we still had to wait a bit longer for the nasi lemak to arrive. That said, the food was delicious and full of flavor. The portions were on the smaller side, which felt pretty typical for an authentic Asian restaurant. The staff were attentive even though we were seated outside, which I appreciated. The restaurant itself has a very casual and family friendly atmosphere, and most of the customers seemed to be dining in groups with family. I especially enjoyed the kwetiau goreng and would definitely come back for that dish again.

The roti prata was definitely one of my favorites and perfect for dipping into the curry. The curry itself was rich, flavorful, and comforting without being overly heavy. The noodles were also satisfying with a nice balance of savory flavors and good texture. For dessert, I tried the pandan panna cotta. The presentation was nice, but personally it wasn't my favorite compared to the savory dishes. The pandan flavor was lighter than I expected, though it was still creamy and refreshing. Service was friendly and the food came out fairly quickly. The vibe is casual and lively, making it a great spot for sharing multiple dishes with friends or family. Overall, a really enjoyable meal with standout savory items I'd come back for the roti prata and curry again.

The flavor is balanced, not too salty, not too spicy, in which would be great for my bule friends, but a bit bland for my palate. Beautiful interior decor and design. Overall, I will try another Indo restaurant in my next NoCal work function. Parking sucks. On the street, visa mastercard and coins only. Of course I got a parking tix because I didnt have enough coins. When I arrived, exactly at 5, I was the only one there and the owner/ manager was there too, sitting at the bar. She was not too friendly/ welcoming. The server and bartender are friendly and helpful, and that made me stay and ordered some food.

I met up with my non-vegan best friend, and we both loved our meals. We shared two vegan appetizers and each got our own entree. I appreciate that they have a separate vegan menu with lots of options to choose from. Here's what we ordered: Mango Mojito, Vegan Thai Tea, Roti Curry, Vegan Crispy Eggplant Strips, Vegan Shrimp Laksa Noodle Soup, and Premium BBQ Combo. The presentation of our dishes was on point, and the portions were generous. Everything I tried was super flavorful and delicious. The curry sauce for the roti was incredible, and the breading on the crispy eggplant was really flavorful and tasty, though I was a bit surprised by the ketchup on top. Next time, I'd ask for the ketchup on the side. The laksa noodle soup broth had an amazing depth of flavor. I didn't try the mango mojito or BBQ combo, but my friend said she absolutely loved them! Highly recommend checking this place out; we're definitely going back to try more things!
