End of an era! CLB has been our favorite spot these past 5 years! The authentic and delicious Malaysian dishes and flavors matched only by the warm and welcoming atmosphere and the people who served us. Every time we went there, we met old and new friends, it was like the perfect gathering place. So for one last time, we had our favorites char koay teow, roti canai, curry laksa, and generous helping of their final day buffet with my favorite vegetable dish of cabbage, an excellent fish curry, sambal petai and other special dishes from the buffet. It was bittersweet -- the wonderful homey lunch experience, but knowing it would be the last at this location. So now we wait for the reopening at another spot, hopefully nearby. My visit took place over the weekend for dinner and my experience was less than ideal. I used the kiosk to place my order for 2 dishes and 1 soda for dine-in and the receipt is time stamped at 6:09pm. I didn't receive any food until 6:49pm. Somewhere in between, I inquired an update about my order as I started seeing many people after me have come and left with their food or finished their meal. Upon my inquiry, a lady (who I think is the owner's wife) mentioned that each dish is cooked individually and that's why it's taking so long. Then, how do you explain all the people who've ordered after me receiving their food, some of who looked to have ordered the same entrees? What I think happened was that my order ticket was lost until I told you my receipt number again and it was retrieved. I would've been more understanding if the truth was shared. As for the food, I ate most of the Penang Char Koay Teow, which tasted fine. However 30 minutes later, I was VERY thirsty. Was a lot of MSG added? I had a few bites of the chicken dish, and that was ok. Also, there are few photos of each entree on the kiosk so I'd have to guess what I'm ordering. There are descriptions, but most are pretty generic. My suggestion is if you're able to take photos and upload to the ordering system, even using stock photos of the entree would help guests. I would've considered asking staff questions, but most didn't seem too friendly except for the gentleman who shared that it was his 1st day of work and that he's still learning. There are so few Indonesian/Malaysian spots in the Bay (especially since my favorite Indonesian restaurant from college, Jayakarta, closed in Berkeley) that it is a must stop anytime I find any on Yelp. And Curry Leaves did not disappoint at all. The store is pretty quaint, tucked away in a corner of a little shopping plaza and is a tight squeeze on the inside especially if you have a big party (although they have a bit of seating on the outside as well). You order at the register, take a number, and get seated wherever there might be space. The food comes quite quickly and is piping hot. My partner and I have come here numerous times (they do have a lunchtime break and close early-ish so we have missed out when we didn't double check) and everything we have tried we have loved. Char Kway Teow: the star dish here - incredibly smoky with that "wok hei" taste that is so synonymous with east and southeast asian cooking. The noodles and meat are incredibly filling and we always have to order a plate. Nasi Lemak: We have tried this with most of the different meat offerings (Mamak Chicken, Onion Chicken, and Beef Rendang) and I think that the cripsiness of the Mamak Fried Chicken is the best pairing for the rice, veggies, anchovies, peanuts, and sambal. While the stewed chicken adn beef rendang are great options as well, this dish really needs that crispy texture for balance and is a great lunch dish to get here. This is a small restaurant with a self help/self order kiosk upfront. Drive all the way here with friend to try out their Chendol since this type of dessert is rare to find in Malaysian restaurants these days. Unfortunately they didn't have on menu today. According to the owner, he is short handed and didn't have enough "trained" staffs on hand to make a good bowl of chendol. Their vegan mee Goreng was very flavorful and tasty. I like that you can choose the level of spicyness for your dishes (including the char kuey teow my friend ordered). The Char kuey teow has good "sizzling wok" fragrance to it. Could use a little more salt or soy sauce though. The roti canai was crispy but a little on the oily side. The curry was rich and good texture and again could use a bit more salt (for me). Tea Tarik was good and has the right strength of (black) tea to it. I would come back again to try their other authentic " malay" dishes such as Nasi Kandar and Kerabu which you don't see often (rare) in Malaysian restaurants. Found out about this Malaysian restaurant from an episode of CheckPlease! and put it on my to-try list. On a recent Thursday, my friend and I were out in the area and I suggested we stopped by for lunch. It's located in a strip mall and we arrived at 12:20pm on a Thursday and had no problems with parking. We studied the menu posted at the counter and we both wanted the fried chicken. A worker came and asked if we needed help and we asked about the Kandar fried chicken and Lemak fried chicken dishes and she explained the difference. Ordering is by a touchscreen and she helped us with the process. You get a number and select a table to sit. There were about six table inside and three outside. Self-service water station available. I had the Lemak fried chicken dish, which did not have the traditional Malay spices as the Kandar. It came with coconut flavored rice, half a hard-boiled egg, cucumber and a sauce, which was spicy. The chicken was a leg quarter and it had crispy skin and the meat was moist. Friend had the Kandar fried chicken. Her dish had a basmati rice, with a curry-like sauce with a large chip/puff. I had a taste of the items and the flavors were bolder with the spices. My friend was going to mention this restaurant to her Malaysian friend and have her try. Besides the authentic Malaysian food, teh tarik and Kari puff, we came for the limited supply of Nyonya Kuih on the weekend of Malaysia National Day. Service was fast, servers include Chef Jai himself brought out food with smiles, and portions were good. Curry laksa was spicy for my taste but my husband liked it. I have been curious about Malaysian food and more specifically this place. It has gotten high praise. So I found time on this Friday lunch hour for a visit. A helpful and friendly young lady behind the counter provided an overview or primer for newbie. She walked me through the order kiosk to place my order of char kway teow and roti with curry chicken and soy milk. The roti came first. It's soft , kind of flaky and stretchy that reminds of Chinese green onion pancake. Dipped in the curry sauce was nice and the curry although pleasant has a spicy curry and bitter kick to it. Together with bits of chicken or potato can be meal onto itself. I really enjoyed the roti. Next came the main entree, Char Kway Teow that had plenty scrimp and squid pieces it reminds me of Chinese chow fun and Thai pad Thai because the noodle. My husband is a huge fan of Nasi Lamak. He had this dish numerous times in Malaysia and Singapore at the most authentic hawkers, restaurants and street food places. We have been waiting for a long time to try out this restaurant and finally the day came. We went in with heavy expectations and hungry tummies. Nasi Lamak: the rendang chicken curry was bland. Sambal tasted nothing like what they serve in Malaysia. It's different and has a sweet taste to it. Fried boiled egg gravy was good. The rice did not have coconut nor pandan leaves flavour that the OG dish has. Roasted peanuts and fresh cucumber was on the side. Roti tellur: unfortunately we didn't like this at all. The paratha with beaten egg roti heavily lacked salt. Roti was also rubbery, chewy and not fresh. It was served with dal which was also less in salt, bland and tasteless. The authentic dish is served usually with dalcha and fish curry gravy. After we came out of the restaurant, our stomach felt a bit off. Not sure why. Disappointed. We drove from far place to try this restaurant out. Wished our experience was better. Maybe other dishes were good. The place was small and tables were cramped. I am so glad we have a Malaysian cuisine in the area! I've been here a few times already and I really enjoy their char kway teow and nasi lemak. The noodles are nicely flavored and you can taste the "wok hay" in the dish. It comes with shrimp, squid and some type of fish cake. Their sambal sauce is absolutely delicious too! It's spicy, but not too overpowering and it pairs perfectly with the chicken and rice. The restaurant is always busy so order ahead online. The best Char kway teow 炒粿條 in the Bay Area! The Nasi Lemak, Nasi Kandar and Mee Goreng are also wonderful. My husband is from Malaysia so when it comes to Nyonya food he can be very picky. We actually found this place and have eaten there for years but finally decided to do a review. The menu is limited but they really put in the effort to make everything delicious. The owner is from Panang and makes a mean plate of char kway teow, which I always order it extra spicy. They do not skimp on ingredients you will get your shrimps, fish cakes and my favorite squid!! You can really taste the wok fire in the noodles. I have not found another place offering better char kway teow in CA... Sometimes they will have special dishes for special occasions such as Malaysian or Singapore holidays, but I have not gotten a chance to try those. It is a family owned restaurant so the ambiance is casual and can be loud. When it first opened the kids were there to help, but the last time we went they had more helpers and kids were no longer there. I don't think they open daily as they also provide catering to some Singaporean associations or other organizations. Sometimes they will have Kuei available for purchase. I love Kuei but they can be pricey which is understandable as those little yummies can be labor intensive and time consuming to make. I do indulge myself from time to time when I see them. We ordered: - Malaysian tea (5/5): Really good. Really thick. This teh tarik gets a gold star in my book. - Hainan chicken (3.5/5): Tender chicken and sauce was good, but the rice, although flavorful, was dry - Nasi lemak (4/5): It doesn't really taste like the nasi lemak I've had in Malaysia, but the sauce was good and complemented the chicken well. - Penang Char Koay Teow (4.5/5): I loved the noodles. I ordered it with medium spice (which is interesting because I've never had the option to change the spice level before) and it was very good! This was probably my favorite dish out of everything we ordered. - Roti canai (1/5): SKIP. This was a miss for me. The roti was too thick (and borderline rubbery)! We didn't even finish it. I do not recommend it. Overall, with the cost and the quality of the dishes, I think this restaurant is okay. My (Malaysian) mom was also not very impressed, unfortunately. Something I'd order again. For the price, we were hoping for a slightly bigger portion. Note that bags and plastic containers are extra charge. They only give paper takeout boxes for free. Given this policy, I do not recommend ordering noodle soup here. Food came out within a reasonable amount of time after ordering. Besides the owner, everyone looked like they didn't want to be there. Tables were first come first serve. You need to claim your spot after ordering and put your dishes away afterwards. Good spot for Malaysian food in Pleasanton! My friend and I dropped by for an early dinner Thursday around 5:30 pm and we were the first ones there. It was a nice day out, so we decided to sit outside to enjoy the breeze. The way it works is you order inside at the counter first, and then they'll bring the food out to you. We shared the roti canai with lentil curry ($6.49) and each got our own entree. I got the Penang char koay teow ($16) and my friend got the mee goreng with chicken only ($16). You can choose your desired spice level when ordering as well. Surprisingly the roti canai came out last; we got our two noodle dishes first. From picking up the take out to my destination was less than 15 minutes drive so it has nothing to do with the weather. I still remembered the long line and super yummy food. I ordered Penang Assam Laksa(it was SO spicy)$18 , mee goreng $16 and hainanesw chicken rice$13.99. The taste for the hainan chicken was just alright. It doesn't have much flavor to it and the rice is not the oil rice which I expect it to be with hainan chicken. The mee gorang was pretty blend. Just alright. Penang Assam Laksa soup was COLD? I am not sure what to expect but a flavorful hot soup base with rice noodles and some fish or meat? However, it only came with some lettuce, rice noodles and a tub of cold soup with some shredded fish. It was not what I expected. I think this place might have changed owner. TL;DR: quite a drive from SF/south bay but worth it for the delicious, authentic flavors from Southeast Asia at a reasonable price. I wouldn't usually be in this area but I had gone fruit picking with friends in Brentwood and figured it wouldn't be too far out of the way to come here. I'd heard good things about this spot for its authentic Malaysian food and was excited to try some items in a group. Service was efficient and friendly at the counter where you order and pick up your food, and the restaurant itself is in this strip mall and had a pretty bare bones interior. All the tables were covered in plastic which was very Southeast Asia of them :) Food: Roti canai with chicken curry: curry was very flavorful! This was one of the favorites at the table because who doesn't like crispy bread with curry? I thought it could have been even crisper and fluffier but I have high standards. Hokkien prawn Mee: this was BOMB. The soup was super flavorful and I loved the mixture of yellow egg noodles with rice noodles! It also came with a generous amount of prawns, fish cake, bean sprouts and water spinach. Another favorite at the table, everyone was trying to get their hands on every last drop of soup. Assam laksa: a pretty good rendition in the bay area where you can barely find this dish anywhere. I liked that the rice noodles were slippery like they should be, with nice fish chunks in the soup and herbs and pineapple on top to keep things fresh! The drizzle of fermented prawn paste kept things authentic but while I liked this, it wasn't very popular at the table. Nasi lemak with ayam goreng: coconut rice, fried chicken, spicy sambal, what's not to like? I would have preferred a fried egg on top but hard boiled eggs are good too. Loh bak: these are like meat rolls stuffed in tofu skin and fried - everyone loved this at the table and they were really crispy, flavorful and nostalgic for me. Usually this is served with fried tofu as well in Penang so it would be nice to get some of that too next time. Teh tarik: literally means pulled tea, this was milk tea but definitely not pulled (which makes it airier and has a nice smooth texture). I enjoyed the nostalgic flavor of condensed milk. Everything was very reasonably priced and I walked away very full, satisfied and happy. Now to think of another reason to go to Pleasanton so I can get other items next time... read more

so excited to find malaysian restaurant in east bay since we enjoyed our Penang trip and its local delicacies. Penang Char kway teo; my first order was spot on, aromatic and flavorful. was happy to find place we could order char kyaw teo. subsequents orders of penang char kway teo: still aromatic but a bit of bland flavor, perhaps they forgot to put seasoning or salt? Penang Assam laksa: we mistakenly ordered think it would be more of singaporean laksa. not fond of this dish. Nasi Lenak: just okay, they do sell some kueh-kueh on the weekends. read more

They don't always open so it was quite hard to come enjoy food. The food at the restaurant seems genuinely local Malaysian, taste was great. You can choose either mild or spicy for your food. The interior is crowded but they have outdoor seating. There was a long line to order at the cashier, pay first and they bring your food. There was quite a bit of wait but understandable because of the long line. read more

I reaaaallllyyyy wanted to love this restaurant because it's my hometown food!! But I appreciate an honest review. Food was ok. The sambal was delicious (coming from someone who has a sister that makes a bomb a*% sambal) The nasi lemak rice needs to be soaked in a little more of the coconut milk (not lemaky enough) My annoyance comes from the very delayed arrival of my child's order. We watched as everyone in the restaurant, incl those who came after us who ordered the same thing had theirs came first. We politely asked them twice about it and no one came back with an answer. I totally understand if they were slammed but the fact was we saw other guests getting their food first and two or three tables who came after us had their same order came within 5 mins of them sitting down. Absolutely amazing. Been here many times and the food is incredible. You have to line up to order food at the counter and then seat yourself. Food - 6/5. Now this is a place that absolutely showcases their delicious sambal! The spice in the sambal is mild and should be enjoyable for most. I get the nasi lemak with mamak chicken (fried chicken). The chicken is cooked to literal perfection! It is really crispy without excess batter. I highly recommend mixing the sambal altogether with the rice and anchovies/peanuts. The outcome is a fragrant coconut dish with a delicious unmatched flavor. The chefs here really knows their stuff. The nasi lemak with chicken rendang is also really tasty and adds a complementary curry flavor to the mix. Service - 3/5. If there's any knock on this place, it's that they are understaffed and do not have time to clean up the tables, and you may end up having to bus other people's trays (yikes!). I don't think it's clearly stated, but you're expected to clean up after yourself -- it's more efficient that way anyhow. Also lately, the lines have been getting so long that food might be ready before there is even an available seat! Imagine that. So you need to come in early when they open for a shot at getting some seats. read more

Well, came on Sunday at 1:30pm for lunch. Drove 1/2 hour to get here. Hours are posted that they close at 3pm. The place was packed with people, so I'm assuming it must be good. Problem is the hours are not posted correctly. They should actually say they close at 1:30pm and not 3pm. Plus the woman that told us they weren't taking anymore orders, didn't even apologize for their mistake. Will give it another try, since the food looks good and the parking was easy. The overall experience of this restaurant had a nice cozy feeling and the service was helpful / attentive. The interior had a bit of a disorganized seating arrangement, but it was a fine place for dining. The food was good! I had some great dishes, some were okay (the roti), and the flavors were all there. I think that the food was delicious, but I think the portion sizes could have been a bit bigger for their price, but I think that this is a quality Malaysian cuisine location that is authentic. read more
