Located in a small plaza that I think is very underrated with so much delicious foods. Curryfornia specializes in Japanese curry that is cooked for 22 hours! The curry has some beef tender pieces which makes it a hearty delicious meal. You order by submitting your order on an iPad and you actually pick it up on the side. An update is way overdue. Eversince my first review, I was able to come back here many many times. I had finally figured out their schedule!!! I can see how this can be so daunting for first time visitors and I was one of them. They're closed Mondays and Fridays now....whereas they used to be closed on Sundays and Mondays. You gotta pay attention, lol. Also they're opened for lunch between 11:30am - 2pm...this means you gotta come here right at 11:30am. If you come here by noon or 12:30pm, chances are they would've already sold out. The same goes for dinner time, which is between 6pm - 10pm. You gotta com here right at 6pm...don't even try after 7:30pm, it would be a waste of time. I've been let down many times for coming here an hour later after opening. Don't call them, its pointless. Although I did see a phone order being processed once and I have no idea how they managed to do that. Once you have figured all of that out, the food is excellent. This is probably one of the best homemade curries I have ever tasted with chunks of meat in it. You have the option to select from mild to extra spicy. I have only always selected "extra spicy" and IT IS spicy. I have been disappointed many times of restaurants saying "spicy" when it ain't, lol. I'm really loving the self-help order kiosk, simple and fast. Once you placed an order you can hear the register in the kitchen prompting Boss (the cook/server/waiter) to start on your order. He will once in a while come out and yell at you if you order toasted baguette, which they are always out. I don't understand why he doesn't just take it off the menu. I've never seen it available, ever. This place used to be a dine-in place pre-COVID. But now they have closed off the other half of the restaurant entirely and only using one small section. This place has been under my radar for quite some time now, and today, I finally got to try them out. This place is take out only. There is no dining area, except for a couple of tables and chairs outside the shop. Not a deal breaker, there's plenty of parking, but it can get busy and full, which is shared with other tenants. Now, the good stuff. Curry is really good and chunky. There were bits of pieces of meat in their curry sauce. I opted for the mild, and i thought it was more mild than most spots. Just FYI, it is self order. They have 2 tablets to place orders and instructions on how to. I do like ordering through the tablet to where I know exactly what I am adding and customizing to my liking. It does get pricy once you add any additional toppings. They offer 3 free toppings, which is good. So look to spend at least $20 for a meal. Overall, I enjoyed the food. Service was quick. I've been on the hunt for a go-to curry place ever since Curry House closed and after seeing all of the positive Yelp reviews, I decided to check it out. This place is pretty much a to-go only joint. There are two tables outside but it doesn't seem like anyone actually dines there. You order yourself at the iPad kiosk and they really pride themselves on customization. Even though you get 3 free toppings, their real moneymaker is the pork cutlet (tonkatsu) which is an additional cost ($4) so your meal can really add up. I was surprised at how expensive this place ended up being. I got a large brown rice bowl with medium spice level and got tonkatsu, fukujinzuke, potato salad and a boiled egg. I wish they had a salad option (which is what they had at Curry House) to break up the rich curry flavor and give a refreshing appetizer option. The different sizes are primarily to determine how much rice you want. It doesn't seem like there's a big variation in the amount of curry you get. In hindsight, I probably should've just gotten a small size since the amount of meat you get is the same. The curry is full of flavor and the medium spiciness has a big kick. I was impressed with the pork cutlet. There's a good meat to batter ratio and it was crisp to the bite. In all, this is a solid spot for Japanese curry and tonkatsu. However, my knock on this place is that it's pretty pricey. There's a shop a couple doors down that also sells curry with tonkatsu. I might have to check them out next time. read more

came right before dinner opening at 6pm and there were already a few people waiting for the doors to open. ordered 2 bowls and food was out within ~20 minutes. we ordered curry, one with chicken, and one with pork. each one was medium sized which was the perfect amount for one person. the curry was really good, probably one of the best curries i've tried before. i read on one of the other reviews that there are beef chunks in the curry, and i definitely noticed! there is very ample seating outdoors, right outside of the entrance. would recommend taking the food to go since it can get a bit busy and is also getting colder outside. read more

So very Japanese in a very good way. You place your order yourself via one of the two touch pads. I ordered small, not too much rice, corn, pink pickles, egg, & pork cutlet. The restaurant is take out only & the record player & motorscyle helps to place feel lived in. The owner is friendly & helpful: we were not sure if we ordered correctly. I made my way over to Curryfornia after work and got over to the area around 7:10pm. I made my way inside and ordered thru the ipad. They're currently not doing any dine in orders as of December 2021. Step 1: White rice, brown rice, toasted baugette Step 2: Size (small, medium, large, extra large) Step 3: Pick your toppings (3 come free) Step 4: Any additional toppings? Step 5: Choose your spice level. I got to go a medium white rice bowl with cheese, corn, and tuna with tonkatsu and omelette style rice as add ons. After ordering, I went back to my car and waited for the chef to finish the order and hand me the food appx 10-15 mins later (it was really nice for the chef to come over to the parking lot area outside to deliver it). The curry is separated from the rice so when you're ready, pour all over! The curry was a bit more watery style but was extremely flavorful and had that kick to it (I had medium spice and could definitely tell the kick was there). It meshed so well with the rice and the liquid coming from the scrambled eggs. The medium also filled me up so be wary of the size haha. But do beware, they close when they sell out. Went to this place for the second time today, and I must admit that the curry is so delicious. However, I give them 1 star for their service. The first time I went, the boss man was very unfriendly but I was like ok we all have bad days let's try again. Nope, the boss today was also very unfriendly. I walked in and he was laughing with another customer ordering at the time who also happened to be Asian so I said hi to him and he just looked at me and walked away. Then another customer ordered after me who happened to be an Asian man, and we both waited outside for our food at the small tables set up. The boss brought the man his food outside to where we were sitting. Then when my food was ready, I thought ok he will do the same. Again, nope. He called out my number and left it inside on the shelves. As delicious as the curry is, I wouldn't come back based on their horrible service. I only state the other customers being Asian because I'm not Asian, and I felt very uncomfortable with the things I witnessed as I waited for my food. It was our first time trying out the curry but it won't be the last. We went in and ordered through the tablet and waited no longer than 10 minutes for 3 plates. We took it home and ate family style. The shrimp was still nice and crispy,the broccoli was cooked perfectly,the omelette was amazing and all sides were just great! The curry was delicious with chunks of meat in there and has a nice spice to the medium and hot. We bought 3 plates which fed 4 people plus we have one whole plate leftover for later. Once you enter, there is a monitor where you can start your order. There are so many possibilities. You get to pick the size, toppings, spice level for your curry, and meat. The first pick was the rice options. I decided to go with brown rice. I love that there wasn't an upcharge for this. Or was there? I forgot. Anyways, their brown rice was good. I mixed the brown rice in my curry and no one in my household knew it was brown rice. Great way to trick some people and get them on to the brown rice side. The next pick was toppings. You are allowed up to three toppings for each order. I was to say there are about a dozen options. Excellent idea, I love that you can customize it to your liking. I went for a boiled egg, potato salad, and corn. However, I did add a fried egg for an extra charge! The fried egg was good and yolkalicous. Just get it! For the meat, I went for chicken katsu! The chicken was good. There were only about five pieces but it was enough. And last, the curry. I enjoy the curry. I'm glad they gave the option on the spice level. When you picture curry in California, your mind tends to gravitate towards Curry House or Coco Ichibanya. I'm here to boldly state that if you enjoy those establishments and have not tried Curryfornia, then Curryfornia will be an tastebud-opening experience. To me, those other curry restaurants are merely a step above using curry mix to make it at home. If I'm going to go out and spend money on curry, I want it to be hearty and full of depth. I want to taste something that's been slow-cooked for hours on end and so intense in flavor that I'm unable to eat it without rice. Here, the rice is your salvation from the flavor bomb that Curryfornia's concoction drops on you. There are chunks of beef generously bathed by the curry and in reality, you can order the curry without any additional addons and it'll still be one of the finest culinary experiences. That being said, here are some suggestions on addons: 1) Chicken Katsu. Healthy portion, well-cooked (crunchy on the outside, chicken is relatively juicy inside). It's not the best Katsu you'll have (you can go to Kagura nearby for that), but it's really delicious with curry and rice. 2) Fried onions. Adds some texture to what you're eating. Keep it away from the curry so that it doesn't get soggy. 3) Bacon. Texture and tastes delicious cause it's bacon LOL 4) Bruschetta (diced tomato, garlic, basil). Our family all got the medium spicy curry, it was plenty spicy without being overwhelming (we had plenty of leftover sauce for another meal, by the way). TL:DR - Still the best place to get Japanese curry in LA. COVID protocols good. Curryfornia is a small mom and pop restaurant out in Torrance. They have the best curry in all of LA. The flavors are deep and rich, and the texture is thick but not too thick. There is a hint of the curry powder flavor, but it doesn't dominate the meal, there's savoriness, sweetness, and a little bit of spice. I normally get the tonkatsu with my curry, and it's always cooked to perfection. It's always crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Pro-tip: They are only doing take out now, so if you want to enjoy the curry at it's best, you need to eat it immediately. Especially with fried foods, the condensation from the heat will cause the breaded katsu to get mushy. I would also suggest putting the curry and rice into a bowl. It normally comes in a box, but it doesn't taste quite as good in box form. Not sure why. Lastly, their COVID protocols are great. All orders are taken from a stationary ipad tablet, and there is typically no one in the front of the restaurant. The owner/chef is in the back making the food and will bring it out to you when it's complete. After ordering, there is ample room to stand outside of the restaurant while waiting for your food. amazing curry. like others have mentioned, curry house left a huge hole for the community - but finding Curryfornia has filled that hole and then some. their main item is curry; you can choose the size, the heat level, 3 complimentary toppings, and a selection of additional toppings (i always add the katsu!) the store is small, with some additional seating outside but it is perfect for takeout and they package everything very nicely for transport. they close after lunch and reopen for dinner service. It was the next stop in line to stop for Japanese Curry since the sudden demise of the ever so popular Curry House. But it's a whole different concept, though! It's almost like a Chipotle/Subway-esque style where you pick and choose what you want. There's a pad to order everything, which, I gotta say I LOVE, so that way, you get exactly what you put in. I went for the medium white rice, chicken cutlet with mild curry sauce and topped boiled egg, red pickles (fukujinzuke) and tuna. Three other orders included for Hubbers and parental units. The wait wasn't long since we were the only customer at the time. As the visit was during these challenging times, we had to take our order to go. (Dine-in was still not an option when we went.) VERDICT: Not the best I've had, but it's above par. The cutlet was cooked to order good. Great crunch on the outside, juicy in the inside.
