Haven't been back to DHP for a while now and the other day happened to walk by it around noon on a Sunday and decided to make an unplanned dim sum lunch stop. Good to see it's still popular, with quite a few people outside waiting for a table. the wait turned out to be only 15 minutes or so and we were seated. They don't seem to do pushcart service anymore but you can order from a dim sum menu complete with nice photos of all the dishes. We had our usual, shrimp dumplings, chives dumplings, turnip cake, green vegetables etc, altogether 6 dishes which was just right for two people (for about $42 before tip with no drinks). Food is delicious although the portions are not big as the dim sum items are all delicately small in size, which is not a bad thing although prices are a bit higher than similar dim sum restaurants in MD or VA. But they have the best location and this is the only dim sum place in central DC and easily accessible without a car. read more

After a long dry dim sum spell, we trekked to Da Hong Pao after reading its glowing reviews. It hit the spot! Although I prefer going with a larger size group, this time we had a party of 2 and yet were still able to try a tasty variety. The dim sum plus the normal food menu was available, though we stuck to our dim sum dreams. Each dim sum item has a picture on the menu so you know exactly what you are getting, very helpful. We arrived shortly after the restaurant opened on Sunday morning at 10am which was the right move because by 11am, all the seats were full. I've been to Da Hong Pao twice for weekend dim sum "brunch" and love it on both occasions. One time, I waited just a few minutes before my party of two was seated at a communal table; another, I waited maybe 20-25 minutes before we were given our own table. It's a busy place! We ordered by checking boxes on a menu that included photographs of the items, which was helpful for those of us familiar but not super familiar with all the types of dishes. My favorite items were the duck and salted egg yoke buns, though the soup dumplings, pork buns, sticky rice, and pork belly were all also delicious. This place is certainly substance over style, with very little to say about the ambiance or service, but truly delicious food. It's a very "in and out" feel, were it all fees somewhat rushed, with food coming out rapidly once your order and hardly any water refills. But you're not here for a long, luxurious meal, you're here for delicious dim sum! read more

We were visiting our son in DC Friday and decided to stop by Da Hong Pao for dim sum. We were there around 11:15 and was shown to a table. A waiter came by to take our order. Immediately we sensed something was not right, based on his body language and his way of greeting us. Either he had a bad night before or something else, he didn't seem to want to serve us at all. He really had a bad attitude the way he answered our questions. We order tea and was told there was only one choice: Oolong Tea. After he brought us tea and we were reading the menu and found there were 4-5 choices. We asked him over and why he told us there was only Oolong Tea available. He said in such a condescending way that we had had enough and left. BTW we are Chinese and so is the waiter. We just felt so offended read more

This was the absolute worst Chinese food we have ever eaten. Full of MSG, cold soup, unrefined fried rice and disgusting eggplant. The service was horrible with the waiter stating that the slimy stuff in our eggplant dish was not a mushroom because mushrooms are too expensive; however, it clearly was a wood ear mushroom and tried to say it was a lily flower so he lied. When I told him we didn't like the dish, he did not take it back. The ambiance was terrible as well. Restaurant too hot and the waiter almost tossed the dishes on our plate. At that point we stopped eating, asked for the bill and paid. We did not eat the food and given his terrible attitude we did not feel compelled to give him much of a tip. He proceeded to walk over to the table look at the tip he was given and demand that it be changed to at least 15%. Unbelievable - he was lucky to get a tip at all. FYI: it's American Chinese cuisine (nothing wrong with that - just a heads up). Came here for beef noodle soup and Szechuan green beans. Neither were anything close to what you might be used to. Beef noodle soup had egg noodles (?) which is quite odd - these are typically in pan fried dishes. Also, the menu had noted that this dish would come with hand pulled noodles. The Szechuan green beans were made with oyster sauce and not spicy at all. The bill came out to $50 for two very mediocre dishes (plus tax and tip). We came here for noodle soups you might find in Chinese Chinese restaurants in SF or NYC - seems like DC might not be the place for that. Looking for the real-deal? This is it. Mom and pop handling business at this place. Service, food, all legit. Local joint that is on point. I can't recommend a single dish bc my table was full of all sorts of things...soups, crispy duck, soy chicken, fried rice (don't judge me), etc. The dim sum was awesome and the menu photos assured my expectations. The traditional menu was huge and included everything you could possibly imagine and some things you can't, like jelly fish. If you want some local Chinatown deliciousness, get over there. read more

It tasted ONLY of oil! The photo shows how the oil and sauce they cooked it in split. One of the waiters asked if everything was okay and we explained the issue with it. What a delightful dim sum experience on a cold DC night. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple snacks to tide us over until a late dinner. We had walked all day and I was running out of steam. I wasn't sure what to expect, but we ordered some Shumai, king prawn dumplings and bean curd rolls. They brought out some peanuts and pickled vegetables to snack on at the bar. I don't know if I was just so hungry, but those peanuts blew my mind. Hot, salty and roasted to perfection. Yum! Then came more warm goodness. The pork and chive shumai was so porky, the king prawns were flavorful and the bean curd rolls were filled with pork and mushrooms in this tasty oyster sauce. I searched for authentic Chinese and found it here at Da Hong Pao. Not very busy on a Sunday evening, but they took great care of us and the food was delicious. We ordered way too much of course but it was all great. Chicken fried rice, steamed Chinese broccoli, a half Peking duck and spicy orange beef. The duck came with six bao and the appropriate sauces and cucumber slivers. It was just as good as the duck I had in Beijing two years back (I'd share the review but there's no Yelp in Mainland China). The beef was a little sweet but it was definitely tasty. A very authentic dim sum experience in Northwest DC! The service was lightning fast, and the restaurant, while unassuming from the outside, was quite tasty. We loved the turnip cakes and liked the flavor of the duck. Because this is authentic (e.g., the meat can be quite gristly), it's not what my (uninitiated) palette was quite prepared for, but that made the experience even cooler in some ways! Had a huge dim sum meal here, pretty good variety, and the check came out to a pretty reasonable number which is always nice. Most things were good, some were great, some were not as good. My favorites were the fried gyoza, soup dumplings, spring rolls, and for dessert you HAVE to try the pineapple buns. I thought they'd be too sweet, but they were fluffy and perfect. The staff was extremely polite and everything came out quickly. Most plates came out STEAMING, burn-your-mouth hot, which isn't always the case for dim sum. Disappointing all around experience - one of the worst Dim Sum experiences that I have ever had . It all started w a glass of coke that I ordered that tasted off right from the start , as if it watered down. To top it off I ordered the lo mein , which tasted like any other lo mein out there however found that I got a bit more extra flavoring that I would have liked - found a piece of hair in it . We ordered the Har Gow (Shrimp dumpling) the shrimp itself was rather mushy - perhaps over cooked. Next we had the Har Cheung(shrimp rice noodle) which tasted sour. We even ordered the Fried Shrimp ball and even the fried dough wrapped in the rice noodle - and found that those too were sour , as if it's spoiled. Never had I went to any dim sum place and struck out multiple times w multiple popular dim sum dishes. This dim sum experience topped the list of worst dim sum experiences ever , I been to worst w terrible service before , but at least I was able to enjoy some of the dishes that those places served. read more

This place looks like it's nothing special, compared to the many, many other restaurants nearby, but it's a great place to eat. While reservations aren't really necessary, you could take it as an extra step just to be sure if you're coming after dim sum hours. If you're coming for the DIM SUM, reservations important. parking situation is tricky, but you can find a spot nearby. The food and service here is great, and the interior is oriental, with a more Chinese decor to it. I would highly recommend their beef chow fun, which they don't make for dim sum anymore, only the dinner menu, and I would also recommend their steamed pork buns. This super unsuspecting dim sum spot is a bit so hidden gem right on 14th I was so excited to try! I believe they only do dumsum in the mornings, but we were able to order a la carte off the dim sum menu at 7:00pm so I was still happy! I loved everything I tried - taro dumplings, congee, shrimp dumplings, and my fav the tan tat is a MUST! It may not look as fancy as other nearby restaurants but the food here is done quite well. It comes out nice and hot with fairly good portion size and served fairly quickly, even with larger parties. It's a little chaotic inside as servers rush to serve the packed restaurant where it's loud and people are moving all the time. All the items I tried were at least average or better, in particular there were a few that stood out. The pineapple bun with cream which had a nice fluffy bun and a nice crumbly topping. The filling was warm and delicious. The baked roast pork bun which had nicely flavored BBQ pork inside and a delicious fun. The steamed chicken feet with black bean sauce, as the skin was marinated nicely and was very tender. The egg tart as each one came out with slightly molten custard and the pastry was not too thick. The steamed king prawn dumpling which was not too salty and I enjoyed the size of the shrimp. The crispy roast pork which was very reasonably priced and had a nice crisp skin to it, with meat that wasn't overly salty. The deep fried taro dumpling which had a good earthiness to it and a nice slightly crispy nest of fried taro. The beef chow fun was also done quite well, though a bit pricey. It had good wok hay with fairly tender beef and bouncy wide rice noodles. The big surprise of the entire meal was really the salt fish and diced chicken fried rice. It had a very good level of saltiness and the searing of the different elements really created a lot of wok hay in the dish. This stood out more than any of the dim sum items I tried, as this really showcased the skill of the chef. Overall, not a bad place to take a large party to enjoy some delicious dim sum with a nice selection of larger family style dishes as well. read more

Noodles were a great texture, the beef was tender! The chicken feet didn't taste very fresh, and under-seasoned. The egg tarts are smaller than usually served, and had a buttery taste. Everything else formed a classic dim sum palette. Service. Friendly and prompt. Cost. I guess it's okay for DC. Each dish was $5-$8 which is hefty for dim sum. I absolutely adore their dim sum. It's a quiet spot that I can go to and eat alone. I like the lunch dim sum more than the dinner dim sum. They both taste great but the lunch one typically taste more warm and freshly made. The dinner one can sometimes be a hit or miss with the food temperatures simply due to the amount of people that come in. My very picky Chinese dad didn't complain once when we had a meal here. That's pretty much his highest complement. My favorite staples - ha gao (steamed Shrimp dumplings), siu mai (steamed pork dumplings), cheong fun (wide rice noodles) were all solid. I didn't love the tofu skin rolls or the baked char siu bao. This is based on the dim sum we recently tried. Street parking is really tough to find in the area so we ended up parking a few blocks away at Hotel Washington. It was $17 for parking which was even more disappointing when the dim was a bust. The inside of the restaurant was clean. Service was good. The dim sum menu is pretty extensive. The menu has pictures. We ordered eight items and they all came out at once which normally is not good as the hot items would get cold quickly however in this case the dim sum was already room temperature when served. Not only was the dim sum not hot when served, all of it lacked flavor. Having been to D.C. many times in the last 20 years, I have yet to find good Chinese food in the area. It's hard to find a decent dim sum, but Da Hong Pao delivered. It is in downtown DC, so expect DC prices and, even worse, DC parking; but it is worth the visit. We came in near opening, 11-ish, and were able to he seated right away. As the Sunday lunch rush started pouring in, there was a line out the door by 12. The restaurant was pretty clean. The service was great with ordering and getting food, but drink refills were hit or miss. The food is the selling point though. This was only my second dim sum experience in my whole life and it really blew me away. Granted my bar is still pretty low but I can't imagine food tasting much better than this. I came here to meet a friend for lunch and we got a number of different things in each was more delicious than the last. I recommend coming with 3 to 4 people so you can get a good selection of the menu and not leave food behind. --- What we ordered --- TURNIP CAKE - so good. One of my new favorite foods. I love how it's pan fried so it has lots of little crispy bits but is still creamy inside. PINEAPPLE BUN - this is more of a desserty item but it's not so sweet that I couldn't enjoy it with the rest of the meal. I actually liked taking a few bits of this to refresh my mouth from the salty savoryness of the other foods we got. PORK AND SHRIMP SHUMAI I'm usually iffy on shumai (and shrimp-based dumplings in general) bc the texture can sometimes be a bit too rubbery, but the addition of pork here totally fixed that issue. I practically inhaled these. BAKED PORK BUN a fun alternative to the steamed pork bun. I especially liked how toasting the bun made it so it didn't stick to my mouth the way bao often does BEAN CURD SKIN ROLL wasn't sure what to expect with this but it was a delicious umami explosion in your mouth STEAMED DUMPLING you can never go wrong with dumplings! SHRIMP STUFFED EGGPLANT ok I'm sometimes iffy on eggplant and shrimp (see my feelings in the shumai description) but this was my absolute favorite thing we ordered. 10/10 would order again read more
