Quiet and clean restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of space to park outside in the parking lot. Our server was super friendly and very attentive. Now onto the food! I thought in all of my fooding that I had found my "best" bahn mi sandwich. I was wrong. This was my favorite so far in life. The bread had a thin crispy golden outer layer and a warm fluffy interior. The veggies were crisp, flavorful, and pleasantly contrasting each other. I am unsure which part of this sandwich was my favorite as the parts all came together wonderfully. The pickled carrots were delicious. I ate many before even tasting the sandwich. Then there was the chicken! It tasted like it had been marinated then flame grilled by cherubs! We also got the short ribs (which I didn't try) and I was told they were even more delicious than the chicken. My wife's sister bit into one of the ribs and raised her head up saying, "yummmm." Finally tried Da Lát Quán and it did not disappoint. The owner was super nice, which made the whole experience even better. Since it was our first time, he went through the menu for us. The mì quảng was really good, and the bún Thái Lan stood out -- super coconutty with a strong lemongrass flavor (which I love). I liked this place a lot! It has a nice ambiance once you walk in, with the fish tank and how the sun gently hits inside at sunset. They served me a vegetarian pho dish that was ginormous; I'm glad it was only a dollar more to get the 32 ounce size of pho (as opposed to 24-ounces for the small). This place has a shared parking lot and was located in the corner of the plaza so you may miss it the first time around. The establishment was empty so we were quickly seated. I ordered the #12 which was the tumeric noodles. It was definitely something I've never tried before but that doesn't mean I didn't like it. In fact, I thought it was good! The cracker was on the stale side though. The shrimp and spare ribs were delicious. Da Lat Quan, aka Dalat Vietnamese Noodle on their receipt, is located in the same plaza as Hung Long grocery store in White Center. Parking is easy and plentiful, especially since some of the other businesses are closed by dinner time. We went on a hot day and opted to skip some of their more popular (and unusual) noodle soups. (Next time!) Anyway, the restaurant itself is showing its age, but not rundown or anything. Service was swift, and we had no issues. We visited in May, 3 months ago, and their prices had a jump according to their website. They seem to be higher than Little Saigon in International District now. Unfortunately The Food: Goi Cuon, Shrimp Spring Rolls, now $9 (was $8) - 4 Stars This is a shrimp or tofu option. We chose shrimp. It was standard fare and meets expectations. Bun Dac Biet, Vermicelli Combo, now $20 (was $17) - 3.5 Stars This is the combo version with grilled pork, short ribs, and egg roll. Both hubby and I ordered this. For me, it was a lot of meat. Other restaurants tend to include grilled shrimp and/or the shrimp meat around sugar cane for their combo version. But theirs have the short ribs, which is less common. It's still meat-meat-meat and not enough variety to be called a combo, in my opinion. In terms of cooking quality, it fit the bill. 4 Stars from hubby. 3 Stars from me. Thai Tea, now $6 (was $5) - 1 Star Their Thai tea tasted like it came from the can. It was perfectly pre-stirred and don't have the typical cream on the top and tea on the bottom look. A good friend highly recommended I go here whenever I stop by West Seattle and I came here with a friend on a hot Sarurday evening. This place shares parking with a suoermarket and several other restaurants amd businesses nearby but parking surprisingly doesn't get too full. Otherwise, tight street parking is advised. There's many tables that seat bigger parties the deeper you get inside, and there's bar seating too. There's also a small stage at the front. My friend and I happened to come here during this place's 6-year anniversary, so there was live music while we ate. I got the com suon bo (beef short ribs with rice) with Thai iced tea on the side, and my friend got grilled pork vermicelli. Extremely solid taste and food, and beef was flavored so well! I was actually disappointed when I finished my dish, there isn't a better way to desribe how satisfied I was after eating, and the live music definitely added to the somewhat fancy vibe the restaurant gives off! Very yummy food!! My hubby was running an errand in the area and offered to pick up dinner before heading home, so I hopped on Yelp to see what looked good in White Center area. I was intrigued by Da Lat Quan. I had the Mi Quang. It was quite interesting and like nothing I've had for Vietnamese food. It was salty, sour, spicy, umami, all of it! I was quite happy with my choice. Also tried the shrimp fresh rolls and they were fairly large with a good amount of dipping sauce. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his pho. The pho broth is legit, the grilled pork banh mi hits all the right notes, and the Mi Quang noodle soup is one of the best dishes in Seattle. I came here to try their specialty noodles because they looked so good in photos. We ordered the Mi Quang ($13) and the Spicy Beef Noodle ($12) and left hungry. The Mi Quang barely has any meat. I had 2 shrimp, plus 4-5 tiny pieces of bone in pork spareribs. I also barely had any broth either. The broth level fell below the noodles when I was eating and I had to drink it sparingly. The flavor was good but this was not worth it for the price. The Spicy Beef Noodle was equally disappointing. This one had a lot of broth but barely any noodle. The beef sparerib that it came with was tough. The flavor was okay. I could taste the lemongrass but the spiciness was pretty mild so I think it doesn't deserve the name "spicy" in its title. Overall, I would not be returning but I also would not tell people to stay away hence the 3 star rating. Came here on a Saturday afternoon with only one other table with customers. It felt like a very slow day. I ordered mi quang. I have only tried home made mi quang so I curious how it would taste. It was pretty good. The broth was more seafoody than I was expecting. There was a decent amount of spare ribs, one quail egg, and two large shrimp. The only negative thing about it was the sesame rice cracker. It tasted a bit stale like it was microwaved and left on the counter for a while. Husband tried the bun bo da lat. I was wondering if it tasted like the hue version.. it honestly taste similar but with no shrimp paste? Still pretty good. The server was nice. I liked the service as in I get up and ask for what I need rather than have the server continously checking up on me. The pricing is confusing. Having to move all the time is difficult especially when it comes to finding the perfect pho place to call your "regular spot". I've tried out a few spots within 5 minutes of my home and I have been disappointed a few times. But if you're reading this, you probably already know that I gave it 5 stars because it deserves, right? My first impressions were, "wow it's a hidden gem smack dab in the middle of a little Asian plaza", I also thought the inside was quite fancy, and looking at the prices, I thought, "hmm, is it going to be worth it?" You bet it was worth it! The first time I went with my roommate and at the time I couldn't eat meat so I had called ahead and asked if they had a vegan option and darn tootin' they did! I was amazed at how much veggies they had put in my pho and that had won my heart over already. Now fast forward to the present and I can slowly start to eat meat again and I decided to jump right into their Grilled Lemon Grass Chicken Vermicelli Bowl and wow, that will totally knock your socks off! I've had a lot of vermicelli bowls in my day and to say this is one of the top 3 best I ever had, is saying a lot! It got to the point where not only was I addicted but I had gotten my roommate and boyfriend addicted as well! We were dining there 2-3 times a week at one point! Now, I had been mad craving steak pho for more than 6 months and I knew I just had to try theirs once my skin was better and now they got me hooked on their beef pho on top of the vermicelli bowl and I'm visiting every week to eat their pho but it might get to the point where I'll have to save up my entire appetite all day just to dig into both dishes (for myself of course). Not to mention, the owner is always around when we dine in and he's very social! Don't be afraid to strike a conversation with him. His staff is also nice, they check in to see if we need water refills or extra napkins, and now they recognize us each time we come in and greet us with a friendly smile! There is way more to Vietnam other than than the usual Phở and Bún Bò Huế that are so abundant in and around Seattle. That's why I was so excited to learn that Da Lat Quan serves Mì Quảng, a soup from Quảng Nam province in Central Vietnam. I had never had Mì Quảng in Vietnam, so I have nothing to compare this dish to. Despite my lack of familiarity, I found Da Lat Quan's Mì Quảng to be a taste and texture adventure. The tumeric-tinged noodles and broth had earthy notes, that combined with the savory pork, quail eggs, and shrimp made for a very unique taste experience. The soup is also topped off with raw veggies, crispy shallots, and a large rice cracker to provide you with crunchy goodness to accompany the unique flavors and the soft noodles. A few other things to note: the soup doesn't come out steaming hot like phở. It was more on the lukewarm to warm side, which I guess is how this soup is commonly served. The restaurant is your typical strip mall establishment (usually my favorite restaurants are strip mall places), roomy with a lot of tables, a few neglected plants in the window and better-cared for plants on the walls, while two television monitors both loop the same Roku startup scene over a lonely bar area. Interestingly, Da Lat Quan also has a small stage area. Maybe they have karaoke here or rent out the space for special events? If so, I'd be so down to watch Vietnamese aunties and uncles sing the hits as I slurp down Mì Quảng with some whiskey! Lastly, if you have food allergies...don't bother asking for modifications. I asked for no peanuts and no quail eggs (more of an aversion than a food allergy), but there they were, peanuts and quail eggs in the soup! Overall, come for the Mì Quảng experience and stay for the other more typical Vietnamese fare at what I think has become another White Center culinary institution! read more
